What happens when a news anchor holds Obama accountable for his performance?

posted at 2:41 pm on April 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Well, maybe this explains why it doesn’t happen very often.  On Sunday evening, CNN’s Don Lemon told viewers that “people like Sarah Palin have a point” when they say that Barack Obama needs to stop blaming everyone else for the shortcomings in his own performance, including the economy.  Noel Sheppard called this “heresy,” and that’s not as exaggerated as one might think — if you read the responses coming to Lemon from Twitter:

LEMON: The agency that protects him under fire. The agency representing the country on the battlefield under fire. The agency that oversees government agencies under fire.

The Secret Service, the GSA, the armed forces. While the president doesn’t directly run these organizations, he is the president and as much as Democrats don’t want to hear it, people like Sarah Palin have a point.

SARAH PALIN (R), FORMER VICE PRESIDENT CANDIDATE: His department — the buck stops with the president, and he’s really got to start cracking down and seeing some heads roll. You know, he’s got to get rid of these people at the head of these agencies.

LEMON: At the head of these agencies. He’s also the head of the economy. He’s in charge of it, yet almost four years later his entire administration is running, still blaming a bad economy on George W. Bush.

BARACK OBAMA, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: Take a look at what happened in Ohio between 2000 and 2008. Instead of faster job growth, we had the slowest job growth in half a century.

TIMOTHY GEITHNER, TREASURY SECRETARY: The president inherited, again, as you know, the worst financial crisis since the great depression. The worst crisis since the great depression when he came in office. You know, this was a financial crisis caused by a shock larger than what caused the great depression.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Too many people have been stripped of their dignity as a consequence of this god-awful recession we’ve inherited.

LEMON: It is true that they inherited the worst economy since the great depression. The research shows it. It does. It shows it. But it’s the same talking points he ran on last time. … So, everyone understands it’s an election year and you need something to hang your hat on. It’s something to hang your hat on. But no one likes a broken record. And at some point you’re going to have to take responsibility for the things that happened on your watch, regardless of what went down or up before you took office. And stop pointing fingers backwards. That’s tonight’s “No Talking Points.”

I don’t agree with everything Lemon says here, specifically with the notion that the President is “the head of the economy.”  Lemon might be using shorthand to mean “the head of government economic policy,” but if he means it literally, he’s wrong.  Only in command economies is the head of state also the “head of the economy.”  Most of the economic problems created or exacerbated by the Obama administration come from their assumption that Obama is the head of the economy — and the “greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression” can also be traced to Congress thinking the same thing about itself and its interventions in lending markets.

But I wholeheartedly agree that the President is ultimately responsible for his administration’s performance, even when responsibility for failures don’t specifically fall on his doorstep, such as the Secret Service scandal.  However, as the Boss Emeritus’ new site Twitchy documents, Lemon’s common-sense statement makes him a traitor to the Left:

@donlemoncnn If you think the Right will make you their Pet Gay, they won’t. Obama is standing up 4 U & don’t forget who you are.—
Kees Valderol (@keesvalderol) April 24, 2012

@theosmelek @Lezlie61 @DonLemonCNN He’s a black gay man and a RW tool for a buck. His boyfriend is a CNN higher up too.—

@donlemoncnn Little Gay kids are committing suicide because of the Right Wing. You could make an impact. You’re a wimp.—
Fritz Alverez (@FritzAlverez) April 24, 2012

@donlemoncnn I don’t care how good your new nose jobs is, you should dance with the ones who brought you.—
Kees Valderol (@keesvalderol) April 24, 2012

Well, anyone who makes a political statement will get this kind of reaction on Twitter, but it’s interesting to see how quickly Lemon’s sexual orientation got made an issue in the criticism.  I suppose this is yet another example of the oh-so-tolerant Left.  Perhaps Lemon will have his eyes opened by this response.

The most amusing part of the response is the horror expressed that a Democrat should be held accountable for his performance.  The fact that such a statement could be in the least controversial, or the admission that Sarah Palin might be right about something would provoke such hatred, is in itself illuminating.

We’re with you cane_loader, where was it? name of agents? let’s dog pile.

DanMan on April 24, 2012 at 3:28 PM

I just e-mailed Hannity and O’Reilly.

It happened at New Orleans airport, about 1:45p Central, today.

My dad was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, helped protect the country, has/had Top-Secret security clearance, and retired a 2-star general.

He’s in a wheelchair now and 80-y.o. and very weak, and he is enraged.

He had that knife for 30 years and took in on duty to the PENTAGON, and the New-Orleans TSA threw it in the TRASH, to AUCTION IT!!!!

I am going to help him wirte a letter on his General’s stationery to the Secretary of Defense, the head of the TSA, to the head of Homeland Security, and to the G-DAMN PRESIDENT.

Enough is enough.

Yesterday, it was a 4-year-old with a GUN.

F___ the TSA.

cane_loader on April 24, 2012 at 3:58 PM

Well it’s pretty bad when you have a teenager that when confronted for a wrong doing and your tell him that he needs to take responsibility for his actions….. comes back at you and says, why do I have to? President Obama doesn’t take responsibility for messing up our country …. Hard to argue the point.

ActinUpinTexas on April 24, 2012 at 4:00 PM

My mother didn’t get any agents’ names. She was trying to calm my father down, who has already had a stroke. right knock, i would like to slug someone.

It should be MANDATORY that, for all the money the TSA wastes, that for traveler CONVENIENCE, that envelopes are available at the CHECKPOINT.

Man, my blood is BOILING. He just left my house, from a nice visit, and he is so ill I may never see him again, and now he’s beside himself at the airport.

I THOUGHT THEY SAID THE DAMN WAR ON TERROR WAS OVER

Ed, can you give us a TSA thread, especially after the 4-year-old with a gun story? I am so spitting mad, but I don’t want to OT your thread.

If my 80-y.o. military dad is treated like a terrorist, then the TSA MUST GO.

That seals it for me.

The curse that George W. Bush laid upon this nation was the Department of Homeland Security.

It must go, without further delay. Nothing good has, or will, come of it – only tyranny.

If Romney wants to save some money, and – if indeed the “War On Terror” is over, then the DHS must go. Go now.

Failing that, at least abolish the TSA, to instantly garner the goodwill of every American who flies.

If he promised that now, he would win election in a cakewalk.

I’m going to go away and stop fouling the thread. Maybe sawing some branches will work. But that little knife…. my dad always guarded it, and kept it in his pocket – it was PART of him.

Even last week, I asked him to use it to cut open some seed packets while some young relatives were planting my spring garden. It ended up in my back pocket, and my mom called later to tell me how he was hoping I still had it.

And just YESTERDAY, you should have seen the smile on his face when I gave him back his little toy knife. He was so happy.

Today, the TSA in New Orleans took it away and threw it in a TRASH CAN, right in front of his FACE!

And NEVER explained to him that they actually were going to auction it for profit.

And when the wheelchair assistant asked for it back so that he could send it to my dad, the TSA agent refused to allow anyone to pull it out of the trash can. So, in my dad’s mind, because he’s on the plane right now and I can’t tell him that actually he just encountered the modern form of highway robbery (definition: robbery on a public road, with threat of violence), he thinks that they just sent his little toy knife that he took everywhere with him for 30 years, to a LANDFILL :-(

Again, my dad is a very ill, decorated, high-ranking veteran. Treated like this, without the human decency to allow for his honest oversight by sending his little 1-1/2 inch knife home in a nice, stamped, TSA envelope.

This nation is doomed unless totalitarian injustice like this is ripped out, root and branch, SOON.

I make the daily rounds to all the political websites and yesterday on “The Daily Beast”, Peter Beinhert wrote a piece about a Pew poll showng that more Democrats claim they would never vote for a Mormon versus Republicans. He was warning his fellow lefties that this was not the way to be seen but just like clockwork, the lefty comments began to get posted ridiculing the Mormon faith with everything from “magic underwear” to polygamy. These people are so predictable. It was so funny because these lefty comment writers couldn’t even perceive that their comments were bigoted. It was truly amazing. We are supposed to be a representative democratic republic.

We have the right to throw off/reform our government. Third President Thomas Jeffereson said so.

I am calling on Mitt Romney to announce an outright ABOLITION of the TSA, now that the “War On Terror” has been declared over.

I am fighting mad. The 4-year-old is suspected of carrying a gun because she hugged grandma. The decorated, wheelchair-bound GENERAL, of all things – my own father! – having his keepsakes thrown away in front of his eyes, keepsakes that traveled safely with him to the Pentagon and Checkpoint Charlie and Cheyenne Mountain!

Had he been carrying his Distinguished Service Medal, awarded to him under the signature of President Reagan, they would have thrown that out, too.

The TSA has overstepped its bounds and MUST be abolished. THE TSA HAS BECOME A FORM OF TYRANNY ON OUR PEOPLE…. AN OPPRESSOR.

I am so angry that I don’t know what to do except go out and get a few things done outside (need to recharge my A/C).

Later, I will be writing some letters that will cut. I’ll help my old dad send some on his official general’s stationery.

I will move future comments over to the Howard Portnoy thread I just saw went up.

If the goons at the TSA order you to throw something away at an airport, break it first. If it’s a liquid, loosen the cap and put it in upside down.

The government makes money selling all the ‘stolen’ goods on ebay, and no doubt the goons pick through it themselves first and keep whatever they want. It’s ‘garbage’ after all.

It never existed. It’s a vague, nebulous, abstract that allows for redefinement whenever it suits government’s desires. The war is our tyrannical government versus its citizens. All government is doing is fostering compliance. There will be little outbursts of anger here and there, but there will always be the Jazz Shaws who say it’s necessary and that they would gladly pay $100.

cane_loader on April 24, 2012 at 5:45 PM

Well this makes sense… his fellow gays are simply telling him that any deviation from the norm, any “difference” they might see is intolerable and will result in them attacking him.

Because that is how society should work in their minds; you see someone who acts or thinks different, and you attack them for the difference… only by being exactly the same can you avoid the attacks.

And these gay men are clarifying to this man that this is how it should be. You SHOULD be attacked for being different…

I’m guessing the reality of what they’re doing won’t ever settle into their tiny brains. Which is more sad than funny.

gekkobear on April 24, 2012 at 5:54 PM

On topic,

Regarding Ed’s post, I do hate to see the sort of personal backbiting comments that often seem to surround situations involving gays.

Homophobia versus militant gays is a combustible mix that seems to overtake any rational discussion, once the gay card gets played. So I usually shy away from any discussion of topics involving gay infighting.

Sober discussion of gay issues, I can do, but it always seems to be such a “soap opera” when I poke my head in and see a full-blown gay-issue fight in progress.

Hey Frank_D, I just walked in the house. At this moment I am sealing up an A/C system and so need to get to a good stopping point because the refrigerant is expensive if I get distracted!

If you want more info, check the Hot Air TSA thread, where I reposted some of my first comments after getting that phone call from the airport from my mom with my dad pretty upset and bummed.

Here’s the detail that makes this thing so ready for FoxNews it’s just stupid. And I’m not making this up, and it’s verifiable:

I had been transferring family videotapes to DVD.

My dad came a long way to visit.

This morning, just before he left for New Orleans airport to get his personal 1-1/2-inch pocketknife taken away, which he has carried for so many years, and OUR FAMILY would have liked to INHERIT,

Guess which videotape I restored last week and showed him thins morning, that he hadn’t seen since Reagan was in office?

HIS RETIREMENT CEREMONY DURING WHICH THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL WAS PINNED ON HIS CHEST!

He had not seen the videotape in 25 years.

He got in the car, left my house, went to New Orleans airport, and there they confiscated the knife that used to go to the Pentagon with him.

While he was in a wheelchair and 80 years old and a retired general.

Repeat – this morning, we watched him stand in front of the flag and have one of the nation’s highest honors pinned upon him

This afternoon, at about 1:45p CDT, while checking in for Southwest Airlines, not only did the TSA seize his toy-sized pocketknife he has carried for years, but they threw it in the trash right in front of him.

And then, when the skycap pushing his wheelchair volunteered to send the knife forward to the address where he and his bags were already going, the TSA agent refused to let him pull it out of the trashcan that all the witnesses had seen him just throw Dad’s pocketknife into.

Then the TSA is going to auction Dad’s pocketknife, that he used for so many years.

By the way, I see that that link was bad on the other thread. I will fix.

I only posted this here instead of the Green Room because you’re on this thread and I have to go.

But that’s what I can tell you right now, and sorry Ed for the OT again, and anyone who would like to maybe help by spreading the story of what happened to my dad today, an 80-y.o. retired general in a wheelchair at New Orleans International Airport, please feel free to go to the Green-Room thread.

I don’t do Facebook or even gmail, so I am kinda crippled, but if anyone wants to share, please do help spread the word.

This abuse of the public has got to end.

Let’s put it his way, would any of you want this done to your dad or grandpa?

For cryin’ out loud, he was 80 years old and forgot to take it out of his pocket :’-(

…I am going to help him wirte a letter on his General’s stationery to the Secretary of Defense, the head of the TSA, to the head of Homeland Security, and to the G-DAMN PRESIDENT.

Enough is enough.

Yesterday, it was a 4-year-old with a GUN.

F___ the TSA.

News Flash People;

No one, NO ONE, that’s right NO ONE is ever going to comandeer an aircraft again with a Boxcutter or a Knife. It’s not going to happen, ever again. Not because of any Govt. Policy, but because of the Cowboy Attitude of the Flying public. You can give all the Terrorizers out there Carte` Blanche` with knives and they aren’t gonna take over nuthin!

And yet they pull this nonsense at the Airports and what do we get when they are called on it?

A TSA spokesman did not apologise and insisted that correct procedures had been followed.

Wonderful!

In a related story, the comandant at Auschwitz also did not apologise and insisted that correct procedures had been followed!

cane_loader,

Who is your Congressman? Who are your Senators?

Don’t waste a moment – the special letterhead is nice, but you need the knife back. Call your Congressman.. I know people who work on the Hill who would get this done – tell us who to call.

Does your Dad belong to a Veteran’s group? My FIL is 82 and was in the 82nd Airborne and also worked at the Pentagon.

Keep us posted, please.

I have to look who his Congressman is… just walked inside – doing air-conditioning work outside.

You know, I can buy him another knife. The same knife. But not the same… you know what I mean.

It’s just the utter insult.

That’s a brick in my dad’s face after a lifetime of service to his country, and as a good, upstanding citizen.

I’m gonna look now to see if I can figure out his Congressman.

This is my dad’s Congressman:

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher

But the problem is that the TSA incident today happened in the New Orleans airport, in Kenner, Louisiana.

That’s probably still a de facto fiefdom of “Cold Cash” Jefferson.

There is something about Liberals that is very brittle. If someone deviates from the party ideology even once, they can easily be destroyed. It’s their weaknesss, and it’s connected to their famous lack of humor except when it comes to degrading and perverted jokes. Like children, they do not deal well with disagreement. If you’re a Liberal, you cannot ever say anything positive about Sarah Palin. Nor are you expected to. As long as you stay in the world of NPR and stay within your ideological limits, there will never be an opportunity to think about Sarah Palin.

Herald of Woe on April 25, 2012 at 9:36 AM

Don,

It didn’t take long for your tolerant friends to call you out on your personal bio facts. And all this time you thought they were tolerant and accepting of you.

Heh, looks like you strayed a little too far off your nice plantation. Either get back and toe the line, or rethink where a smart observant independent minded man like yourself really belongs…..

mojowt on April 25, 2012 at 10:05 AM

They can’t convince me of that codswallop about “inheriting” the worst economy since the Depression. Do they forget that Democrats were in total control of Congress for the last two years of Bush’s presidency? No, they didn’t forget, they just don’t want you to remember.

That first tweet is a real jewel: “Don’t forget who you are”. Yeah, don’t forget who you are, BOY, and keep marching in lockstep, or else!

What a bunch of jerkwads.

Lemmon is a reliable media hack for the left and Obama in particular. Fortunately not many people watch him.

roux on April 25, 2012 at 11:48 AM

Obama still points at the very slow job growth in Ohio 2000-20008. Under Obama’s leadership it is no longer slow. Negative isn’t slow, is it?

dahni on April 25, 2012 at 11:50 AM

You made a blog post about 4 tweets? The slowest of all possible news days.

libfreeordie on April 24, 2012 at 3:15 PM

Well then, how many tweets would you say it takes to reveal the true, vile, bigoted nature of the left?
Four certainly seems sufficient unto the day.

Solaratov on April 25, 2012 at 12:22 PM

I can go to youtube right now and find plenty of comments from people who claim to be Republican and who say they hate Obama because he is an African American. Would it be fair to do a article saying “its obvious that all republicans are racist, why look at these comments!!”

I think not.

Politricks on April 24, 2012 at 3:35 PM

And yet, that is exactly what leftists/liberals/democrats do…constantly.

Your argument is a FAILURE.
