What happens when a news anchor holds Obama accountable for his performance?

posted at 2:41 pm on April 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Well, maybe this explains why it doesn’t happen very often.  On Sunday evening, CNN’s Don Lemon told viewers that “people like Sarah Palin have a point” when they say that Barack Obama needs to stop blaming everyone else for the shortcomings in his own performance, including the economy.  Noel Sheppard called this “heresy,” and that’s not as exaggerated as one might think — if you read the responses coming to Lemon from Twitter:

LEMON: The agency that protects him under fire. The agency representing the country on the battlefield under fire. The agency that oversees government agencies under fire.

The Secret Service, the GSA, the armed forces. While the president doesn’t directly run these organizations, he is the president and as much as Democrats don’t want to hear it, people like Sarah Palin have a point.

SARAH PALIN (R), FORMER VICE PRESIDENT CANDIDATE: His department — the buck stops with the president, and he’s really got to start cracking down and seeing some heads roll. You know, he’s got to get rid of these people at the head of these agencies.

LEMON: At the head of these agencies. He’s also the head of the economy. He’s in charge of it, yet almost four years later his entire administration is running, still blaming a bad economy on George W. Bush.

BARACK OBAMA, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: Take a look at what happened in Ohio between 2000 and 2008. Instead of faster job growth, we had the slowest job growth in half a century.

TIMOTHY GEITHNER, TREASURY SECRETARY: The president inherited, again, as you know, the worst financial crisis since the great depression. The worst crisis since the great depression when he came in office. You know, this was a financial crisis caused by a shock larger than what caused the great depression.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Too many people have been stripped of their dignity as a consequence of this god-awful recession we’ve inherited.

LEMON: It is true that they inherited the worst economy since the great depression. The research shows it. It does. It shows it. But it’s the same talking points he ran on last time. … So, everyone understands it’s an election year and you need something to hang your hat on. It’s something to hang your hat on. But no one likes a broken record. And at some point you’re going to have to take responsibility for the things that happened on your watch, regardless of what went down or up before you took office. And stop pointing fingers backwards. That’s tonight’s “No Talking Points.”

I don’t agree with everything Lemon says here, specifically with the notion that the President is “the head of the economy.”  Lemon might be using shorthand to mean “the head of government economic policy,” but if he means it literally, he’s wrong.  Only in command economies is the head of state also the “head of the economy.”  Most of the economic problems created or exacerbated by the Obama administration come from their assumption that Obama is the head of the economy — and the “greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression” can also be traced to Congress thinking the same thing about itself and its interventions in lending markets.

But I wholeheartedly agree that the President is ultimately responsible for his administration’s performance, even when responsibility for failures don’t specifically fall on his doorstep, such as the Secret Service scandal.  However, as the Boss Emeritus’ new site Twitchy documents, Lemon’s common-sense statement makes him a traitor to the Left:

@donlemoncnn If you think the Right will make you their Pet Gay, they won’t. Obama is standing up 4 U & don’t forget who you are.—
Kees Valderol (@keesvalderol) April 24, 2012

@theosmelek @Lezlie61 @DonLemonCNN He’s a black gay man and a RW tool for a buck. His boyfriend is a CNN higher up too.—
Annie Lawton (@CurlynDoris) April 23, 2012

@donlemoncnn Little Gay kids are committing suicide because of the Right Wing. You could make an impact. You’re a wimp.—
Fritz Alverez (@FritzAlverez) April 24, 2012

@donlemoncnn I don’t care how good your new nose jobs is, you should dance with the ones who brought you.—
Kees Valderol (@keesvalderol) April 24, 2012

Well, anyone who makes a political statement will get this kind of reaction on Twitter, but it’s interesting to see how quickly Lemon’s sexual orientation got made an issue in the criticism.  I suppose this is yet another example of the oh-so-tolerant Left.  Perhaps Lemon will have his eyes opened by this response.

The most amusing part of the response is the horror expressed that a Democrat should be held accountable for his performance.  The fact that such a statement could be in the least controversial, or the admission that Sarah Palin might be right about something would provoke such hatred, is in itself illuminating.

The internals at CNN and the circulation rolls at the NYT must be horrendous. We are actually seeing reporters and anchors voicing the opinion that perhaps, just perhaps BHO isn’t the Messiah after all. Either the Mayans are right and 2012 is the end of the world or perhaps, just perhaps there are SOME on the left who are seeing that this emperor is nekkid! I won’t hold my breath but it’s nice to see this .001% truth reportage by the most rabid of left-leaning organizations. May more scales start falling from their eyes.

Yep. It still makes me angry knowing how they treated him. I mean, it would’ve been different if he’d roamed the country and paid tons of money buying airtime for months before November telling everyone he had the solutions to the problem. Or if he’d actively campaigned for the job and spent almost a billion dollars to get it. But no, those SOBs just forced him into the private jets and the golf vacations in Hawaii. It was downright despicable what they did.

Of course he meant it literally. The average Leftist doesn’t understand A. that we live in a constitution republic (separation of powers and all that) and B. basic economics. This ill-advised approach to politics permeates almost everything they do and advocate.

visions on April 24, 2012 at 2:56 PM

Lemon’s statements are an indication that lefty group-think is starting it’s slow painful turn on zero.

It starts with a couple trial balloons like this and like Lovitz on last night’s thread. As a few more celebs and talking heads start to come out and hint to the collective that it’s ok to be critical of barky, the collective will start to get the message to turn on him and tide will swell. Before long, the flood gates will open and they’ll eat their own.

The true believers will thrash and gnash their teeth like you see in the tweets at Lemon, but in the end, the hive will overwhelm them.

Popcorn please.

Have you ever read the comments on a CNN thread? I have commented maybe twice on them. It’s repulsive CNN won’t moderate that vile crap. They just let whoever wants spew. So if CNN wonders why they are in 30th place after MSNBC in 27th this is reason 999 – moderate your post threads.

I am guessing this isn’t new to Don Lemon, and he knew what speaking his mind would get him. Still he’s got more guts than the cowards calling him names, and berating him on twitter. I wouldn’t describe myself as a Don Lemon fan, but he doesn’t deserve the response he’s getting.

Sarah was kind to Don in Iowa. He didn’t forget that. It’s sad that the left is so nasty to him for being truthful about the president.

The resulting interview turned out well, and both Palin (who has been out of the spotlight as of late) and Lemon (whose star is on the rise) came across as engaging, charismatic and respectful (kudos to Palin for maintaining eye contact with Lemon and giving him thoughtful responses even as her handlers tried to whisk her away and throngs of fans asked for autographs).

You are incorrect. By any measure – Regan inherited a greater mess from carter at the time. By this time in his presidency, he had turned things around. Obama simply has no idea how wealth is created, or how a free market economy works. Even at a high school level – he would not have made some of his boneheaded decisions. That excuse that he inherited something unprecedented is an attempt to doge himself of any responsibility – don’t fall into that trap – it is pure fantasy. At the time Reagan came to office, interest rates were stratospheric, gasoline was essentially reationed and inflation was crazy. obama has not had either of these hurdles to overcome.

If they want to Blame Bush then he also must be given credit for a record number of months of job growth in a row; record high levels of EMployment during several years FOLLOWING the 9/11 attack; record high stock market; record high levels of disposable income; record high productivity. The economy under Bush only began to tank when it became obvious to business that the next pres was going to be a far left tax and spend, anti-business liberal. And tell me again why the economy “crashed…..?”

ProudPalinFan on April 24, 2012 at 3:23 PM

OT alert:

I’m sorry Ed, for the OT intrusion, but I have to write this because I’m so angry.

I just got a call from my mother, who is at the airport, traveling with my father, a retired general in the military, being pushed through security in a wheelchair.

He has served his country for many years and now is quite old, and is getting on the plane VERY upset.

They just confiscated and threw in the trash can, right in front of him, his miniature Swiss-Army knife, which has a ONE-AND-ONE-HALF-INCH BLADE AND TOOTHPICK, because he didn’t think to take it out of his pocket.

He is ill, and didn’t think of it. He has carried that toy knife for THIRTY YEARS, even while on ACTIVE DUTY, to open envelopes and packages, and, yes, for personal hygiene after meals.

The airport assistant pushing his wheelchair offered to take it and send it to him, but the F**KING TSA AGENT WOULD NOT LET ANYONE TAKE IT OUT OF THE TRASH CAN, SITTING RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM, JUST AFTER EVERYONE INVOLVED WATCHED THE SOB AGENT THROW IT IN THE CAN OVER MY FATHER’S PROTESTS!!!

Now, one can make arguments over how someone might have inside knowledge that my father, who can barely walk, might be carrying that miniature knife, overpower him, steal his knife from the depths of his pocket, overpower all the other passengers, take a stewardess hostage, force the opening of the cockpit door, and crash the plane into the f**king White House.

But is that really going to happen, with a man who carried Top-Secret clearance for years and defended his country, and was respected enough to make his way to the near TOP of the military?

The TSA should be FORCED to have envelopes right there at the checkpoint, for passengers to mail conficated belongings they have INADVERTENTLY overlooked while preparing for their virtual strip-search.

Oh, I forgot, the TSA has NO INTEREST in serving the public by doing this because they hold AUCTIONS TO SELL THE STUFF THEY STOLE AND THREW IN THE TRASH CANS!

Damn it to hell.

My dad is very upset, and he is so fragile that any upset may be his last.

We better get ahold of the TSA right away and force them to serve the public, or flat out ABOLISH that bureaucratic monster, or they will have their boots on our necks.

This is BULL$HIT.

Never heard of Don Lemon and that’s not my fault. The first thing I learned about him is his friends are rather rude though. Reckon he knows?

DanMan on April 24, 2012 at 3:24 PM

He’s known by most conservatives for his infamous “Chicago’s out? Chicago’s out?!” remark when the city lost its bid for the 2016 Olympics. But he’s been on a roll this past week. I don’t know what’s gotten into him, but I hope it’s not just a stunt for more attention on the blogosphere.

Doughboy on April 24, 2012 at 3:27 PM

I didn’t even know dude was gay. You know why? Cuz it doesn’t matter! Why the hell are libs so fixated on skin color and sexual orientation? You know, people are defined by more than just that.

Anyway, I give Lemon props for this segment along with his civil discussion last week with Noel Sheppard and Dana Loesch regarding his recent use of the N-word on CNN. I wish CNN were like this more often. They’d see a surge in ratings if that happened.

Doughboy on April 24, 2012 at 3:20 PM

You mean people are really individuals with their own personal character? The hell you say.//

Bitter Clinger on April 24, 2012 at 3:27 PM

Just wait until the voters hold Barky accountable.

“Chicago’s out? Chicago’s out?!”

Ah, good times, didn’t know who that was. Just about the only time I see CNN is when I’m at an airport.

Lemon had a great segment about Palin some months back in Iowa. He might be left leaning, but I like his honesty.

Sour Lemon was stalking Sarah Palin in IA , maybe her charm
overpowered his stupidity :

It’s always amusing to see the “defenders of gays” use gay to disparage people.
They insult people by calling them gay, don’t they have any idea how bizarre that is? The answer is no, they have no idea.

To them a gay person is a pet, like a dog, and when they want to insult people they call them a “dog” or in this case, gay.

right2bright on April 24, 2012 at 3:32 PM

Ed, you said and quoted Lemon as follows: “I don’t agree with everything Lemon says here, specifically with the notion that the President is “the head of the economy.” Lemon might be using shorthand to mean “the head of government economic policy,” but if he means it literally, he’s wrong. Only in command economies is the head of state also the “head of the economy.”

We aren’t a “command” economy, YET! One more Obama term will complete the move he has implemented thus far!

tomshup on April 24, 2012 at 3:32 PM

Oh, so it’s “shorthand” again? Where did I hear that last?

I wish I took shorthand in high school.

I haven’t flown anywhere in the last 7 years. And it’ll be at least that long before I set foot on another commercial airliner with this stupidity on display.

Bitter Clinger on April 24, 2012 at 3:33 PM

Once again the left show how tolerant they are. They really are vile people.

steve123 on April 24, 2012 at 3:35 PM

…but it’s interesting to see how quickly Lemon’s sexual orientation got made an issue in the criticism. I suppose this is yet another example of the oh-so-tolerant Left.

No surprise here. That’s how the left rolls. They’ll jump down your throat if you say something about one of their icons who happens to be gay. A protected group dontcha-know. But God forbid someone like Don Lemon stray off the plantation…the homophobic slurs will come spitting out their mouth like water out of a fire hose.

Don Lemon Attacked For Saying Obama Admin Must ‘Take Responsibility’ For What ‘Happened On Your Watch’

I bet that, if they could, the lunatic-left d-cRAT socialist extremists would “whitewash” him over this. Then they would claim that his remarks are nothing but “racism”.

TeaPartyNation on April 24, 2012 at 3:35 PM

This site is really bad at reporting news. I know you all arent reporters, your bloggers but still. Any one can go anywhere and find some random people on the internet who say something. But for a journalist to take that and make it a blanket statement about all those of a group is petty.

I can go to youtube right now and find plenty of comments from people who claim to be Republican and who say they hate Obama because he is an African American. Would it be fair to do a article saying “its obvious that all republicans are racist, why look at these comments!!”

I think not.

You made a blog post about 4 tweets? The slowest of all possible news days.

Even funnier, you responded with criticism over a blog post about 4 tweets and, we assume, aren’t being paid per refresh.

You are so awesome.

Yep but Sarah Palin isn’t hated by all Ghey people, Gay Patriot are Sarah Palin supporters. Not all Ghey people are leftys.

Dr Evil on April 24, 2012 at 3:02 PM

And, don’t forget Tammy Bruce and the TAMs. I still keep in touch with a couple of the TAMS that I met in Iowa. Great people.

Fallon on April 24, 2012 at 3:39 PM

Jay Carney knows at least three Don Lemons.

Valerie Jarrett knows only one Don Lemon, and she’s already called him to straighten him out.

BuckeyeSam on April 24, 2012 at 3:43 PM

He not only mentioned Palin, but agreed with her….

That was more than a dog whistle, it was a full fledged air raid siren..:)

Gimme a break. The MSM painted the Tea Party as a bunch of KKK gun nuts on the basis of a holstered firearm worn to a rally by…wait for it…a black guy.

BuckeyeSam on April 24, 2012 at 3:48 PM

Wait just a dag blasted minute! There is a segment on CNN named “No Talking Points”? And Sarah Palin was quoted in a “No Talking Points” segment on CNN? I’m sitting here in stunned disbelief.

President Obama:

“If I had a Son, he wouldn’t look like Don Lemon”.

I hope Lemon doesn’t commit suicide because of those bullying Twitter comments.

Right there with ya, cane_loader. TSA is totally out of control. There is no excuse for their behavior toward your father and any of the thousands of others who have been manhandled and robbed without cause.

totherightofthem on April 24, 2012 at 3:52 PM

By any measure – Regan inherited a greater mess from carter at the time. By this time in his presidency, he had turned things around. Obama simply has no idea how wealth is created, or how a free market economy works. Even at a high school level – he would not have made some of his boneheaded decisions. That excuse that he inherited something unprecedented is an attempt to doge himself of any responsibility – don’t fall into that trap – it is pure fantasy. At the time Reagan came to office, interest rates were stratospheric, gasoline was essentially reationed and inflation was crazy. obama has not had either of these hurdles to overcome.

mouell on April 24, 2012 at 3:01 PM

Make it go viral.

I WANT YOUR MONEY

A political documentary that contrasts the two paths the United States can take using the words and actions of Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan. The film uses interviews from well-known public figures, experts, movie clips, dramatic portrayals, music, graphics and even comedic animation to tell the story in the plainest terms of the choice between the Obama and the Reagan views of the role of the federal government in our society. It also examines how these big government programs have been tried in the past at great moral and financial cost to the nation. California is offered as a case-in-point in understanding what economic challenges might face the nation, if we choose the larger government path.
