Tragic turn to NC Democratic Party turmoil

posted at 10:01 am on April 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

We’ve had some fun with the scandal in the North Carolina Democratic Party leadership so far, but the latest update from the Daily Caller takes a turn for the tragic.  The man at the center of the scandal, former executive director Jay Parmley, had been accused of sexual harassment against a former male employee, which the party settled with a sealed agreement.  However, Parmley has also been accused by his former girlfriend of infecting her with HIV, and offering health insurance through the party afterward:

Rebecca Burgin, a long-time former girlfriend of former North Carolina Democratic Party executive director Jay Parmley, told The Daily Caller that she believes Parmley infected her with HIV.

Parmley resigned on April 15 amid sexual harassment allegations from a former young male staffer.

Burgin, a 29-year-old Oklahoman, has shared her story with TheDC, including the revelation that Parmley’s lawyer offered her health coverage, paid for by the Democratic National Committee, to manage her illness. She ultimately declined that offer, fearing it would constitute insurance fraud. Parmley, she said, abandoned her a few months later.

On April 13, TheDC first exposed allegations, leveled in December by former North Carolina Democratic Party communications staffer Adriadn Ortega, that Parmley showed him a picture of a penis, gave him unwanted shoulder rubs and made apparent sexual advances toward him. Ortega also alleged that Parmley discussed with him in detail his past sexual activity, including “solicit[ing] sex from gay websites.”

Parmley’s ex-girlfriend Rebecca Burgin told TheDC that Parmley forever changed her life by making her HIV-positive. She’s worried, she said, that Parmley may have done to someone else what he did to her.

Be sure to read it all.  When she approached Parmley about her HIV-positive status, he told her he wanted out of the relationship.  Later, she hired an attorney who got the NC Democratic Party to offer her what was essentially family coverage on Parmley’s employment status.  However, Burgin eventually wondered whether that would be legal at all, since the relationship was over and the two no longer shared a household, and instead opted to pay for COBRA coverage herself.

This makes the scandal much more grim, and it couldn’t come at a worse time for North Carolina Democrats — and Barack Obama.  He’s due to speak in Chapel Hill today, but don’t expect him to discuss gay rights issues, even though Democrats are pushing against Amendment One:

Two weeks from now, North Carolina will hold a public referendum on what could become one of the toughest anti-gay measures in the country: a far-reaching proposal to amend the state constitution to ban civil unions and domestic partnerships. But President Obama is not expected to touch the subject when he appears in Chapel Hill on Tuesday — even though it is roiling the electorate there.

Instead, Obama will talk about college loans, his aides said, kicking off a two-day, three-state tour designed to energize the youth vote. His delicate sidestep of Amendment One, a ballot initiative to be decided May 8 that would recognize marriage between a man and a woman as the only legal domestic partnership in North Carolina, is seen by some as another sign that he is not fully committed to gay rights — an interpretation that could dampen the enthusiasm of the young voters he is trying to court.

“It’s a little bit of a missed opportunity,” said Josh Orol, 20, a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a leader of a campus movement to defeat Amendment One. “I didn’t expect him to talk at length about it. I know he has come out publicly against it. But I sort of hoped he would at least name-drop a little bit. It’s disappointing.”

I guess Obama is still evolving on same-sex marriage.  The tragic turn in the Parmley scandal won’t make it any easier. In the meantime, keep Rebecca Burgin in your prayers.

Everyone knows that having high risk unprotected sex with someone who is high risk to be HIV infected, is high risk. Shouldn’t there have been a duty to tell his girlfriend that he may have contracted HIV before he had unprotected sex with her?

Blake on April 24, 2012 at 10:12 AM

I didn’t expect him to talk at length about it. I know he has come out publicly against it.

It must be awesome to be a Democrat politician. You’re free to pander to your base’s low-information voters all you want, because your base’s high-information voters just assume you’re lying and secretly agree with them. And instead of despising you for flip-flopping and deceit, they love you for your political savvy.

First Parmley infects Burgin with HIV and then Parmley dumps her. Afterward, her attorney (who should know better) and the NC Dem Party attempt to get Burgin to break the law by offering her health insurance under Parmley’s coverage.

This really isn’t all that much different than what John Edwards tried to do to keep his mistress quiet about their out-of-wedlock child. In other words, using money subject to scrutiny for purposes other than what is allowed. Makes you wonder just what rank-and-file Democrats in the state feel about all this. I’ve got to think more than a few are aghast but the question remains what they intend to do about it. Keep in mind the #2 Democrat can’t take a role in restoring the party because she bounces checks.

Vote for Amendment One. If you have any Catholic Charities in NC, the homosexual activists will sue them, and any children that their adoption services might have placed will instead remain on the streets.

Officialized sodomy and religious liberty are incompatible. Not because churches doctrinally oppose homosexuality, but because homosexual activists hate churches, and any fig leaf the law provides them they will use, no matter who the end result harms. It has happened internationally, it has happened in MA, it has happened in IL.

Opposing officialized sodomy is nothing more than prevent defense. Approval of it is just the foot in the door for its supporters to get on with their real agenda: forcing religious institutions to change their doctine or be crushed under the foot of government, consequences be damned.

Amendment 1 Is Bad For Childern.” My guess is that they are trying to confuse voters into thinking that voting down the amendment is voting down gay marriage.

ReaganWasRight on April 24, 2012 at 10:29 AM

The pro-gay crowd pulled the same stunt in Michigan when I was living up there. The deliberately put out confusing advertising in the hope that enough of the public would be confused that they’d be able to sneak it past the voters. It wasn’t nearly as wide-ranging as Amendment 1 but would have saddled the taxpayers with paying the same benefits for “domestic partners” of state employees.

This “confusion factor” is also the basis of the pro-gay lawsuits filed in California over Proposition 8. Apparently the voters were just too confused that they didn’t know they were limiting marriage to the traditional definition even though it passed by a significant plurality. If you can’t get the voters to approve same-sex marriage in California, then it is clear society is not ready for acceptance of the concept.

Whether Amendment 1 passes or not, the fact of the matter is that not one state that recognizes same-sex marriage set up that recognition by the will of the people. The eight states where it has been legalized have done so through the legislature or court system. In Maryland (where it is entirely possible the concept will be overturned by referendum in Nov), the pro-homosexual forces waited until a key vote against had to go to the hospital and pushed the issue through in the middle of the night by one vote. This is not democracy it is the left acting like the disreputable dogs that they are- skulking in the dark to get accomplished which is so clearly against the will of the public.

Happy Nomad on April 24, 2012 at 10:55 AM

I suspect President Sparkly Pony is against homosexual unions because it would put Planned Parenthood out of business.

I do feel for her.

However the old adage is true: Why buy the cow when you are getting the milk for free?

“No huggy no kissey ’til I get a wedding ring.
My honey my baby don’t put my love upon the shelf!
She said don’t hand me no lies and keep your hands to yourself.”

Everyone knows that having high risk unprotected sex with someone who is high risk to be HIV infected, is high risk.

Blake on April 24, 2012 at 10:12 AM

Having sex with anyone that engages in a risky behavior is high risk regardless of it being protected or unprotected.

Of course. the moment we admit that simple reality lots of interesting things become just numbers that need to be assigned simple multipliers . That, in turn, leads to blind, non-agenda driven analysis as algebra does not care about feelings… The results of that analysis would be utterly devastating.

Wake up your sarcasm alarm.

Sorry but that was way too close to liberal thinking to trigger and sort of sarcasm alarm.

Happy Nomad on April 24, 2012 at 10:57 AM

Isn’t this manslaughter at least?

SouthernGent on April 24, 2012 at 10:59 AM

You know what would have stopped this? Free birth control pills.

Democrats love women, generally speaking. It’s individual women they hate, one at a time.

Reminds me of an old ‘Peanuts’ strip where Linus says “I love humanity. It’s people I can’t stand.”

There is a key difference:

Polio is not the result of a lifestyle choice whereas HIV/AIDS, except in cases of infection via blood transfusion, is contracted due to a choice of lifestyle as it is a sexually transmitted disease.

So this guy is sticking it into whom he chooses.
Sounds like a choice to me.

Bubba Redneck on April 24, 2012 at 11:06 AM

HIV is a 100% preventable disease. If only we could say that about more diseases.

2 or 3 gay members of Obama’s TUCC (one was the choir director) were all murdered around the same time, i.e. around the time Obama announced his candidacy. That was apparently buried by everyone. The admitted bisexual Frank “Child Molester” Marshall was/is another close linked story to Obama that remains buried. Obama has a lot of buried gay linked stories of his own, so he’ll avoid gay and gay rights issues.

Not if he is going to be hitting on a male staffer at work.

Happy Nomad on April 24, 2012 at 11:15 AM

If the guy knew he had AIDS and did not inform the woman, he should be prosecuted under the current laws of the State of North Carolina. With all the STDs out there these days that are resistant to treatment casual sex is coming to an end.

Or maybe he should have told her he was gay, and she could have moved on to someone a little more appropriate and a little less dangerous.

Jay Parmley is a fitting metaphor for the Left. Diseased and viciously misogynistic and harmful to fellow human beings.

I hope she sues him.

At a minimum the DNC should dedicate the Convention to women like Rebecca Burgin. The DNC loves victimized women. The delegates can wear colored ribbons or something.

Now how could he not drop a name like Orol?
