Quotes of the day

posted at 10:45 pm on April 24, 2012 by Allahpundit

“Mitt Romney effectively assumed the helm of the Republican Party on Tuesday after five primary victories across the Northeast solidified his stature as the presidential nominee-in-waiting who is trying to unite conservatives and persuade independent voters that President Obama does not deserve a second term…

“The Romney campaign is aggressively looking into all aspects of the Obama administration, with a plan to present the president as a nice and likable but unsuited to solving the country’s economic challenges. Aides said they intended to keep the conversation focused on Mr. Obama’s record in the White House and not his personal biography.

“‘There is a pretty broad view that President Obama is a good family man and decent guy, but may be in over his head,’ said Mr. Gillespie, a former counselor to George W. Bush, who was brought into the Romney campaign this month. He said the argument against re-election would be built around the suggestion that Mr. Obama ‘has not displayed strong leadership, but failed leadership and weak leadership.’”

***

“The bad news for Obama four years later is that the first weeks of the general-election campaign have demonstrated that Mitt Romney and his top staff are not going to play by the same rules as the McCain campaign

“Many conservative bloggers and reporters believe that mainstream publications and networks ignore stories that make the president or his allies look bad. One of the few surefire ways to force the media to cover a story they would prefer to ignore is to have the Republican presidential candidate talk about it. In 2008, McCain’s refusal to do so was particularly hobbling, but the Romney campaign is, so far at least, proving more willing to highlight those controversial topics or ones best handled with a bit of laughter — and utilizing the later hours of the campaign news cycle to do it…

“The Romney campaign is approaching the coming weeks with a strategy of ‘bracketing’ — doing events before and after key Obama campaign stops, making Obama’s message for that event implausible, refuted, and silly by the time he delivers his remarks. Before an Obama stop, Romney will do interviews with local radio stations. Last week Romney went to Charlotte, N.C., to give a ‘pre-buttal’ to Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in September. Romney was supposed to speak on a rooftop with a view of the convention site, the Bank of America football stadium; bad weather forced his team indoors, and Romney spoke with a the city skyline behind him.”

***

“On Romney’s speech Tuesday night, Santorum said he struck the right tone. ‘I think he painted a strong picture. It’s one that’s a clear contrast to what this president’s brought this country,’ he said. Despite having once been his opponent, Santorum said the goal is to defeat President Obama, and he would support that. ‘This is about making sure we have the right person in the presidency, in the House and the Senate,’ Santorum said. ‘I believe he’s the better — obviously I believed I was the better choice. But I’m not in the race anymore.’

“Morgan observed, ‘Unless I’m mishearing things, you just endorsed Mitt Romney’ — a charge Santorum jumped around, saying he’ll be meeting with Romney soon, and then we’ll see.”

***

“If Romney wins the election, it’s almost a sure bet that Republicans win control of both the House and the Senate. And that matters. Right now, the GOP’s agenda is the Ryan budget, and that’s entirely fiscal: It’s a premium support plan for Medicare, and tax cuts, and deep cuts to Medicaid, food stamps and other domestic programs. All that can be passed through budget reconciliation — which is to say, all that can be made immune to the filibuster.

“So if Romney wins and the Republicans take control, they could accomplish quite a lot on party-line votes, even if their majorities are slim, and Democrats are opposed. Indeed, Romney could end up being a fairly transformational president for conservatives so long as he’s paired with a Republican Congress.”

***

***

“Four years ago Barack Obama dazzled us in front of Greek columns with sweeping promises of hope and change. But after we came down to earth, after the celebration and parades, what do we have to show for three and a half years of President Obama?

“Is it easier to make ends meet? Is it easier to sell your home or buy a new one? Have you saved what you needed for retirement? Are you making more in your job? Do you have a better chance to get a better job? Do you pay less at the pump?

“If the answer were ‘yes’ to those questions, then President Obama would be running for re-election based on his achievements…and rightly so. But because he has failed, he will run a campaign of diversions, distractions, and distortions. That kind of campaign may have worked at another place and in a different time. But not here and not now. It’s still about the economy …and we’re not stupid.

“People are hurting in America. And we know that something is wrong, terribly wrong with the direction of the country.”

Let me just put it this way: if I had to go to a party that I couldn’t get out of and I had to pick between being stuck going with Obama supporters and Ron Paul supporters…well you get the picture. :-D

FloatingRock on April 25, 2012 at 1:47 AM

Then HAVE it! You’ve gone on for page after page of crap whining about the way it used to be and not posting anything substantive. It’s not like there’s two dozen stories a day on this site and twice as many headlines, you have to go after the one thread that gets a little loose and lively.

Do you just want an exclusive place where what gets said is only what you like?

No, if I don’t want everybody to agree with me, that would be freaking boring as heck. What gave you that idea?

You’re a tough one to figure out, Float. Not much of a libertarian, if you ask me. (Which you didn’t……Suppose I should be banned, eh?)

RedCrow on April 25, 2012 at 1:45 AM

How does having a separate thread for chit-chat contravene libertarian views? What’s wrong with having a choice? Having a superior real-time chat capability would actually facilitate the kind of communications you guys engage in and I would think should be considered a feature.

FloatingRock on April 25, 2012 at 1:53 AM

It seems to me (and I could be wrong) that you’ve been whinging that folks here are not behaving the way you’d like.

It seems to me that that’s a sort of control issue. You’re not happy because you want the site to work more like you’d like it.

I’m certain there are plenty of sites that do everything (and more!) that you’re suggesting. (You could always take my suggestion and start a website of your own. They’re cheap, and you could enforce any rules your little heart desired.)

I read tons of stuff on here that I don’t agree with. Before the nomination was “all-but-sewn-up” for Romney, I used to play a little game:

I look at the title of the thread (e.g. “NASA flies last mission”) and try to guess how many comments it would take for someone to call someone else a whatever-bot. Made me sick, I stayed away for a while. But I never moaned on and on about it.

For people like me who write longer comments that take time, like a lot of people used to do, they get lost among all of the quick little comments that all of you guys write. While you guys might write 50 comments I might only write one. There’s no way I can keep up with all of the chit-chat and serious comments. By the time I post a reply to somebody the original message might already be a page or two back, so to pick up where I left off would be so time consuming that it’s not very practical.

Trying to hold two different kinds of conversations in the same thread simply isn’t practical.

I’m certain there are plenty of sites that do everything (and more!) that you’re suggesting.

It might surprise you to find out that HotAir used to be one of them before the QOTD turned into a chat room. There is nothing wrong with you guys chatting, it’s just that there are a lot of other people, possibly more, that preferred the QOTD the old way. Apparently Minnesoter is one of them and there have been many others with the same complaint in the past—what is wrong if HotAir accommodates both groups?

Yes she does, she is world class but focuses on video game songs. Her Mario bros is pretty sweet. She does piano and violin concerts.

Bring up a TOPIC that you are interested in and we will discuss it. Pretty simple.

PLUS we can add musical interludes and emphasize the humanity of thought and feeling with appropriate music… nowhere else can anyone get all that.

I love this, it’s Show Me night on HA!

alwaysfiredup on April 25, 2012 at 2:23 AM

Every time I see your screen name I laugh at the time you thought I was a big lib. The week before “dmann” did too and even said the F word. Hurt my little feelings. :)

arnold ziffel on April 25, 2012 at 2:38 AM

Did you go into the School of the Arts as a voice major?

ExpressoBold on April 25, 2012 at 2:33 AM

Yes.

Don was head of the music department my freshman year.

I don’t understand their attitude. All day long—on and off depending on work most of us check in to HA. Serious comments on issues with a little humor of course. I don’t forget how to be serious at night. Just because I joke and tell stories, doesn’t mean that I’m not pretty po’d about current events. I just like to be happy once in awhile.

You might not do opera but I bet you would do this one… I have fantasies about it… bit music school, lots of talent in voice and a full palette of instrumentation…. Call me Maestro…

OK, buzzkill, can you at least throw out a song or give us something to work with? I bet you wouldn’t be much of a fun date.

I get it, man, I really do… I have a lot fun learning and commenting here… helps me unkink the old brain cells. I just dislike the nasty stuff and it took me a while to let it go if I was personally involved.

Too bad Bmore already went to bed he likes that opera stuff. That was a good link. I’m going to watch some of that Wagner stuff tomorrow. “Ride of the Valkyries” reminds me of all the good times spreading American goodwill through SE Asia.
