Quotes of the day

posted at 10:45 pm on April 24, 2012 by Allahpundit

“Mitt Romney effectively assumed the helm of the Republican Party on Tuesday after five primary victories across the Northeast solidified his stature as the presidential nominee-in-waiting who is trying to unite conservatives and persuade independent voters that President Obama does not deserve a second term…

“The Romney campaign is aggressively looking into all aspects of the Obama administration, with a plan to present the president as a nice and likable but unsuited to solving the country’s economic challenges. Aides said they intended to keep the conversation focused on Mr. Obama’s record in the White House and not his personal biography.

“‘There is a pretty broad view that President Obama is a good family man and decent guy, but may be in over his head,’ said Mr. Gillespie, a former counselor to George W. Bush, who was brought into the Romney campaign this month. He said the argument against re-election would be built around the suggestion that Mr. Obama ‘has not displayed strong leadership, but failed leadership and weak leadership.’”

***

“The bad news for Obama four years later is that the first weeks of the general-election campaign have demonstrated that Mitt Romney and his top staff are not going to play by the same rules as the McCain campaign

“Many conservative bloggers and reporters believe that mainstream publications and networks ignore stories that make the president or his allies look bad. One of the few surefire ways to force the media to cover a story they would prefer to ignore is to have the Republican presidential candidate talk about it. In 2008, McCain’s refusal to do so was particularly hobbling, but the Romney campaign is, so far at least, proving more willing to highlight those controversial topics or ones best handled with a bit of laughter — and utilizing the later hours of the campaign news cycle to do it…

“The Romney campaign is approaching the coming weeks with a strategy of ‘bracketing’ — doing events before and after key Obama campaign stops, making Obama’s message for that event implausible, refuted, and silly by the time he delivers his remarks. Before an Obama stop, Romney will do interviews with local radio stations. Last week Romney went to Charlotte, N.C., to give a ‘pre-buttal’ to Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in September. Romney was supposed to speak on a rooftop with a view of the convention site, the Bank of America football stadium; bad weather forced his team indoors, and Romney spoke with a the city skyline behind him.”

***

“On Romney’s speech Tuesday night, Santorum said he struck the right tone. ‘I think he painted a strong picture. It’s one that’s a clear contrast to what this president’s brought this country,’ he said. Despite having once been his opponent, Santorum said the goal is to defeat President Obama, and he would support that. ‘This is about making sure we have the right person in the presidency, in the House and the Senate,’ Santorum said. ‘I believe he’s the better — obviously I believed I was the better choice. But I’m not in the race anymore.’

“Morgan observed, ‘Unless I’m mishearing things, you just endorsed Mitt Romney’ — a charge Santorum jumped around, saying he’ll be meeting with Romney soon, and then we’ll see.”

***

“If Romney wins the election, it’s almost a sure bet that Republicans win control of both the House and the Senate. And that matters. Right now, the GOP’s agenda is the Ryan budget, and that’s entirely fiscal: It’s a premium support plan for Medicare, and tax cuts, and deep cuts to Medicaid, food stamps and other domestic programs. All that can be passed through budget reconciliation — which is to say, all that can be made immune to the filibuster.

“So if Romney wins and the Republicans take control, they could accomplish quite a lot on party-line votes, even if their majorities are slim, and Democrats are opposed. Indeed, Romney could end up being a fairly transformational president for conservatives so long as he’s paired with a Republican Congress.”

***

***

“Four years ago Barack Obama dazzled us in front of Greek columns with sweeping promises of hope and change. But after we came down to earth, after the celebration and parades, what do we have to show for three and a half years of President Obama?

“Is it easier to make ends meet? Is it easier to sell your home or buy a new one? Have you saved what you needed for retirement? Are you making more in your job? Do you have a better chance to get a better job? Do you pay less at the pump?

“If the answer were ‘yes’ to those questions, then President Obama would be running for re-election based on his achievements…and rightly so. But because he has failed, he will run a campaign of diversions, distractions, and distortions. That kind of campaign may have worked at another place and in a different time. But not here and not now. It’s still about the economy …and we’re not stupid.

“People are hurting in America. And we know that something is wrong, terribly wrong with the direction of the country.”

There is a fairly high attrition rate aided greatly by open registrations. I learned long ago to use HA primarly for entertainment. Way too many posters thinking the political discussion here has any real impact and way too many who are obvious campaign shills. We’ve lost some good people over the years but the best ones had a sense of humor.

After drinking a potion of Saul Alinsky, Jeremiah Wright, Karl Marx, Bill Ayers, Benito Mussolini, King George III, King Louis XVI and his own creation, Barack Obama is transformed into the cruel, remorseless, pathological, narcissistic, misanthropic, pyromaniac (clinical reference note #1) Herr Hussein, representing the hidden side of Obama’s dual nature brought to the fore. As Barry he has many friends and a pleasing personality, but as Herr Hussein he has become more and more fanatical, more and more dictatorial, more and more scape goating, makes ever longer enemies lists, encourages demonization and dehumanizing of political opponents and becomes ever more isolated and fascist like as time goes by as Herr Hussein grows in dominance. After taking this potion repetitively, he no longer needs to rely upon it to unleash his inner fascist demons.

Clinical reference note #1: Such individuals who lack ulterior motive have traditionally been referred to in layman’s terms simply as a variation of a pyromaniac. Most such maniacs lack conscious motivation although they are fully aware of the acts they are failing to stop or they themselves are committing. Typically they will feel intense pleasure, gratification, or relief when causing destruction or when witnessing or participating in the aftermath. Motivation is also classified as pathological and non-pathological. Some research suggests that feeling such joy at horrific situation is pathological. Other research suggests that some motivation for this comes from rational thought. Taking joy in horrific situations for envisioned gains in political power and/or the concealment of the imposition of devious plans are examples of supposed rational decision making.

I must say in conclusion that history has repeatedly and harshly proven that elevating such a profoundly disturbed man to the highest office in any country is never a good idea.

And the trolls don’t even contribute anything useful to the conversation, they just chit-chat and insult anybody who interferes with their little world.

One November day that now seems so long ago
When I was not so smart you know
A smooth talking man came before me
And spoke of all the things he would do for the country
He would chase away all the blue
It seemed like he knew just what to do
He would heal all the wounds
And give us all silver spoons
It seemed like such a dream
I never even suspected it was all just a scheme
“Come vote for me!” he said with such a smile
“Just get high on my hope and change for a while”
But now I understand
Now, now, now I understand
He’s nothing put a lying destructo man

Why Romney could be a transformational president
Posted by Ezra Klein

Romney hurts our chances in the House and Senate most likely.

His actions are still all liberal like being for the College Enrichment scheme to tax S Corporations. I mean how does it make sense to steal from Corporations and give the money to College Corporations? Winners and Losers and Mitt is all on board.

So his speech tonight rings very hollow compared to his actions. He did not criticize Obama on College Enrichment tonight. Colleges that raised tuition 25% during Obama so far. They sure are winners.

Underestimated fact of the day: about one third of those voting on Democratic primaries on Greene County + Fayette County + Allegheni County primaries skipped the presidential ballot.

Loyal democrats who bother to go vote on the congressional and state-wide primaries – yet they actively not voted for Obama even when he was running unopposed in the primary. This is your typical Midwest blue-collar socially conservative democrat.

Well, having read for a long time and only becoming a recent poster, sometimes fresh eyes are what are needed. The GOP candidate will be who he’ll (most likely Romney) and from there agree or disagree you have to work on the change from closer to home. It still really is the lesser of 2 evils, as no candidate will cover every persons perspective, but you have to start some where, and we have had enough of Obie and the destructive policies, with that I will let you be.

If the choice is between Obama or Romney the lesser evil is who, precisely? As Kissinger is said to have said of the Iran-Iraq war back in the 80s, It’s a shame they can’t both lose.

casuist on April 25, 2012 at 12:08 AM

Very true, but a president has only so much power (granted Obie seems to be trying to take that to new heights) but with a strong congress, who do you think will actually be the most reasonable to its influence? I always laugh at politicians that say they are doing the work of their constituents, cause they never acknowledge the other half who didn’t vote for them.

uncommon sense on April 25, 2012 at 12:13 AM

I sincerely hope this writer has it about half wrong. What does that mean, “present” the president as “nice and likable”?

de rigueur on April 24, 2012 at 10:56 PM

Unfortunately the mainstream media publicity machine–where most Americans get their news and impressions–has spent billions over the last four years creating an image of Obama and his family that is a flat-out lie. At this point, the impression most Americans have of Obama is that he is a decent, likable guy. Calling him a sociopath or radical Marxist would simply confuse and turn off all those Americans. It didn’t work in 2008 when Hannity did it, and it will work even less now that the mainstream image is fixed in so many minds.

It’s easier and I’m guessing more strategically smart not to fight this image that the mainstream media has crafted so carefully and instead to simply present him as in over his head. It’s annoying to those of us who are regular readers of Hot Air and listeners of talk radio, but that’s the practical reality we conservatives have to deal with. You don’t need to conclude that Mitt is a dimwit because he’s using a little judo and running with the narrative and just twisting it a bit.

Burke on April 25, 2012 at 12:13 AM

Mr. Obama’s campaign strategy will accelerate the drop. In Michigan Wednesday (4/18), he said: “Unlike some people, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.”
This strikes Americans as more petulant than presidential.
The more the president talks about Mr. Romney, and the less he talks about the issues which concern Americans, the more he seems out of touch, in over his head.
But Democrats are so accustomed to turning every issue into a personal attack they can’t stop, even when its counterproductive. To mix sports metaphors, Democrats are like a football team that runs the same play over and over, without regard to down and distance.
Early indications are a strategy of distract and smear won’t work against Mitt Romney.
He counterpunches fast and hard, and then returns swiftly to the issues Americans care about.
Because he knows Americans don’t have to like him to vote for him, or dislike President Obama to vote against him, Mr. Romney focuses like a laser on competence. He uses effectively the contrast between Mr. Obama’s words in 2008 and his subsequent deeds to make his points. He doesn’t call the president names. He acts like the grownup in the race.
Even in polls which oversample Democrats, Mr. Romney already runs even with the president. The whopping 10 point advantage the GOP enjoyed last Monday (4/16) in Rasmussen’s generic Congressional poll indicates Republicans are more popular (or Democrats less popular) now than on the eve of the Republican landslide in 2010.
In every election but one (2004) since 1964, undecideds have broken heavily toward the challenger. It’s early yet, but the signs indicate Mr. Romney will win, and win big.

Not sure what your talking or complaining about.

A sound bite worth using later against Obama.

Steveangell on April 25, 2012 at 12:14 AM

It’s a joke-and Koolaide knows it.

annoyinglittletwerp on April 24, 2012 at 11:59 PM

It was a stupid, classless joke and HotAir was better before people like you took over the QOTD. I agree with Minnisoter back on page one on that aspect, at least. And I am unhappy with HotAir because they seem to be in lock-step with the GOP establishment media narrative. When I signed up it was in the middle of Shamnesty and we were all opposed to the establishment. Now things have changed and I have adapted, but when other people complain I might as well speak up and give them a +1.

I think HotAir should ban AnnoyingLittleTwerp for uncivilized behavior towards other members, generally speaking. S/he treated KatyTheMeanOldLady pretty viciously on a thread earlier. Frankly I don’t know how the rest of you can be friendly with AnnoyingLittleTwerp, and some of the rest of you really aren’t very friendly, SWalker made a false, malicious allegation against me last night and didn’t provide a quote to back it up.

But SWalker can be a jerk once in a while, I don’t get the impression that s/he is a jerk most of the time, but AnnoyingLittleTwerp really lives up to the name and is just a troll, IMO.

I don’t recall ever reading any substantive comment here from Twerp, ever. Do any of you ever recall reading something, on topic, that made you really thing and then you looked at the byline and it was AnnoyingLittleTwerp? Well of course her/his friends will say ‘yes’, but I say no, and I think a lot of the old members that aren’t here anymore would probably agree, if they were here like they used to be. Instead we get page after page after page of mostly pure crap.

And then I would unban MB4 if it were my choice, although I’m not sure why he was banned the second time, maybe he deserved it.

FloatingRock on April 25, 2012 at 12:14 AM

For all the criticism of Romney he’s the first Republican presidential candidate in decades to not be distracted by asinine social issues or allowing the Democrats to bait him into chasing those social distractions.

He focusing on the economy alone. Pitch perfect so far.

It’s been genuinely amusing to see Axelrod desperately trying to make the campaign about something else.

Looks like we got some the $7 per hour crew working HotAir.

Much of the bitching is too over the top to buy.

You’re off-topic. Why are you coming here with your chit-chat?

Seriously, though, I’ve read a bunch (if not all) of your comments on this thread, and you’re not on topic, either.

Everything I’ve read from you (at any time) are either complaints about other members (33%), or your Ron Paul tripe (66%). Is that the website of your dreams? Why don’t you start one? Or, do you just want to force everyone to play along and read the same comment over and over?

Also, I’m not sure I’ve ever “met” a more humorless human being in my life. Did you manage to crack a smile today? Didn’t you get your RDS out of your system (for the day, at least) on the other threads?

Finally, I addressed your little “dare” YT vid that you posted, yesterday on QOTD. Then, a page later, I reminded you that it was there, and did you care to respond. Later, I said my “good nights” to all the evil chit-chatters and went to bed. And who responds to some other comment I made ten minutes later?? And you lament how the QOTD has changed?

Evidently, your idea of a good QOTD thread is you, sitting in an empty room all by yourself, constantly babbling, “Ron Paul! Ron Paul!” and, “Mitt-bot! You Mitt-bots!”

No thanks.

FloatingRock…what’s gotten into you? I’ve read you over the last couple of years (when all I could do was vote on Sunday’s)…and you are right about the dialogue…but it is here periodically when the trolls aren’t doing their JOB…and then I lurk and learn… believe it or not. You do contribute to the dialogue…but you’ve been uptight lately…maybe you can help get rid of a few trolls and help get it back to your expectations. I’d like that…these folks are adapting and going with the flow…if you see the quality of the trolls…you should be doing well with them…give them a hand.

rickyricardo on April 25, 2012 at 12:18 AM

As someone who actually had been here a little while, but posted under a different name before, (I took a new handle during open registration because of changes in my circumstances, and I was a little bored with the old one), I am quite amused that some here keep knocking “newbies” as if they have territorial rights and it is up to them to decide who should be allowed to join in the conversation. It is particularly ironic to be whining about that on HotAir 6th birthday. HotAir always had been a place where where there was a lot of back and forth of exchanges.

Come on. What do you really expect people to think? You’ve repeatedly implied (if not outright stated) that you will not vote for the Republican candidate if it’s not Ron Paull even if that means in essence a vote for Barack Obama. I try to respect your views but you really are in a tiny minority here. Why do you keep pounding your head against the wall? Most people simply do not agree with you and some (although not me) even view you as a Ron Paul troll. Still I don’t see anyone calling for you to be banned.
