Video: Marion Barry explains racism culturism to you all

posted at 3:30 pm on April 22, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Reason TV’s Kennedy catches up with Marion Barry to discuss his rather provocative statement about Asian restaurants in Washington DC and the need to replace them with businesses owned by African-Americans.  Barry scolds Kennedy for not comprehending the difference between racism and culturism, and reluctantly attempts to elaborate … and just manages to bury himself even further:

Marion Barry was D.C.’s mayor for sixteen years (1979-91 and 1995-99), and currently he’s a city council member representing Ward 8, a section of D.C. that’s overwhelmingly African-American.

Barry, who popularized the phrase “Bitch set me up!” during an FBI sting operation that sent him to prison, is back in the news for declaring that Asian business owners in his district should be driven out.

“We got to do something about these Asians coming in and opening up businesses and dirty shops,” he said at an April 3rd campaign event. “They ought to go. I’m going to say that right now.”

Racism, culturism … it’s all pretty much the same thing: bigotry.  And it’s ugly no matter what Barry wants to call it.  I’d like to believe that Barry is “finished with that,” or finished in politics, but if a drug bust on tape hasn’t convinced DC voters to send Barry into electoral oblivion, then I doubt that a little anti-Asian prejudice will change minds.

Update: And just think — if the statehood-for-DC activists had their way, this could be Senator Marion Barry.

What does Barry have against the Far East? I thought he was part of the democratic process and unity covers all! ////

I have yet to figure out why people hate the largest organ of the human body.

Isn’t he a Democrat? Why does the Democratic Party tolerate such bigotry and racism? When David Duke ran as a Republican, the GOP endorsed the Democrat. Seems to me the Democratic Party should kick him out, or else acknowledge they are the racist party.

Barry had already served a prison term when he was re-elected to an additional, if non-consecutive term as Mayor of Washington. Anyone who can pull that off will go through life rather easily on the assumption that they can do and/or say no wrong. Here in the DC area, there is relatively little outrage over his remarks outside of the Asian community. He is being exactly what his friends, and his enemies, expect him to be.

My little brother the liberal used to tell me that all New Yorkers, including his black friends, were embarrassed by Al Sharpton. Riiiggghhht.

Maybe you have a crack problem of your own:

The arrest and subsequent trial precluded Barry seeking re-election, and Barry served six months in a federal prison. After his release, however, he was elected to the D.C. city council in 1992 and ultimately returned to the mayoralty in 1994, serving from 1995 to 1999. — Wiki

This is beyond stupid. While there is surely a huge problem with a visible minority of African Americans, the fact that most of them are middle class or higher and have options undreamed of in 1955 is testament to the success of the progressive movement.

If conservatives had had their way, we’d still have Jim Crow, lynching and a sharecropper economy.

urban elitist on April 22, 2012 at 4:26 PM

She set him up. Putting that microphone in front of his face and asking a question was a low down dirty trick.

But anyway, now that a prominent DC Democrat has come out of the closet as a racist, I expect the Press Corpse will demand that Obama denounce him and apologize for him, right?

I see the major networks followed up after Reason TV…and they are rushing to interview Sharpton and Jackson…who are already disavowing everything the crack brain has said! The MSM are also scrambling to quote Maxine Waters as we speak…and are trying to put a cowboy hat on another race stalker, just so folks will think this is an ethnic problem!

KOOLAID2 on April 22, 2012 at 4:27 PM

More proof that during the past 40 years, while White people were told that they had to be tolerant of ALL minorities, Black people were told that they were allowed to hate everybody who isn’t Black.

This is why Asian immigrants from China, Korea, and India who come to this country, work hard, make sure their kids do well in school, and quietly move up the economic ladder are derisively referred to as “Whites”, not only by Blacks, but also by White ponytailed Left wing college professors.

Racism, culturism … it’s all pretty much the same thing: bigotry.

Races and cultures are different.

I don’t suggest we hate people for those reasons, and I suggest we can love people that are different, and I suggest that there is so much human variability within races and cultures that it’s entirely possible to find people of different races and cultures that we have more in common with than we do with most people of one’s own race or culture (or mixture thereof).

But they’re still different, in real and significant ways.

Update: And just think — if the statehood-for-DC activists had their way, this could be Senator Marion Barry.

This will be funny if this reaches Britain. People will think he is talking about Muslims and their dirty little shops stinkin up the joint.

BL@KBIRD on April 22, 2012 at 4:59 PM

But he’s right. Anyone been in the back of an “asian” restaurant? Just because something is racist, doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

Sure…an entire city which is enslaved by fealty to electing kook-fringe liberals and racist blacks somehow is embarrassed by Marion Barry.

Jaibones on April 22, 2012 at 4:25 PM

Twenty years ago, my friend. I might just point out that the entire south is still voting along the pro-klan lines that defined the Nixon and Reagan victories.

urban elitist on April 22, 2012 at 4:27 PM

lol, I love how you Leftists excuse bad things from your Party’s past by saying things like “that was 20 years ago”, and yet anything that a Rethuglican did 20 years ago is Today’s News. Simply pathetic.

Algore lost his home state in 2000. Was that his fault, or was that Bush’s Fault too?

Del Dolemonte on April 22, 2012 at 5:02 PM

BL@KBIRD on April 22, 2012 at 5:04 PM

I am more that familiar with anti-white racism.

urban elitist on April 22, 2012 at 4:22 PM

Really? Some examples would be nice. Where have you lived and witnessed it?

Have you ever lived in the Blue State O’bama claims to have been born in, for example? I have.

A hint: it’s as Racist as any other state in the country.

Del Dolemonte on April 22, 2012 at 5:05 PM

This explains Jim DeMint, as well.

urban elitist on April 22, 2012 at 4:31 PM

Just to name a few:
Maxine Waters (D)

But he’s right. Anyone been in the back of an “asian” restaurant? Just because something is racist, doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

I’ve seen both … clean and unclean Asian shops.

BUT … I will say the one Chinese restaurant in this tiny town here is just absolutely disgusting.

But then, it’s uniquely bad!

statement about Asian restaurants in Washington DC and the need to replace them with businesses owned by African-Americans.

I finally figured out what this reminded me of- Robert Mugabe he took farms from white Africans in Zimbawea and gave them to black Africans. The outcome was…..well

Mugabe began seizing white-owned farms in 2000, claiming such shock treatment was necessary to right colonial wrongs and empower landless black people. But critics say the only winners were Mugabe’s cronies, many of whom neglected their land and left it fallow and unproductive.

As a result, the agricultural economy collapsed, driving the country towards record hyperinflation and financial ruin. Far from benefiting, millions of black people starved.

Is that Marion Berry’s vision for our nation’s capital “Little Zimbabwe” Wow just wow, Marion Berry is preaching straight out of the Robert Mugabe’s playbook.

I don’t know who is living in Berry’s district, but those people need a check up from the neck up.
