Quotes of the day
posted at 11:01 pm on April 20, 2012 by Allahpundit
“Jeb Bush, whose endorsement of Mitt Romney helped secure the candidate as the all-but-certain GOP nominee, said an interview Romney should avoid the urge to wage a negative campaign. The popular former Florida governor also offered up his pick for Romney’s running mate, and said he’d consider a spot on the GOP ticket if asked.
“‘I think Mitt needs to stay above the fray a bit, and to offer a hopeful message that can lift people’s spirits up,’ Bush said in an interview this week with the conservative website Newsmax…
“‘I don’t think we need to demonize the president,’ Bush said. ‘I know a lot of people when my brother was president spent a lot of energy trying to demonize a good honorable man.’”
“A candidate falls into the Twitter Trap when he allocates substantial time, energy, and resources to chasing the news cycle and scoring points with reporters and pundits. This sort of strategy may keep staff busy and amused, but it is not the way to victory. Romney must avoid playing at Obama’s level. He must project an image appropriate to the office of the presidency while attacking endlessly the incumbent’s record on the economy, the debt, and health care. He must strike a drastic contrast with the president, who is going to run this campaign small and petty because he has no other options…
“When David Axelrod mentions the dog, remind the country that this is the worst recovery in history. When David Plouffe mentions the rich, let Americans know that everyone’s taxes should be low, that everyone’s taxes are scheduled to spike on Jan. 1, that Obamacare includes numerous taxes on every American, and that the middle class has fared the worst in the Obama economy. When Debbie Wasserman Schultz sneers that Republicans are coming after women, stress the importance of a culture of life and Obamacare’s threat to religious liberty. Ask every audience Reagan’s question: ‘Are you better off than you were four years ago?’ Unless the audience is filled with TARP recipients and government workers, the answer will be no.
“The deeper into the year we get, the more desperate Obama is likely to become. There will be incendiary rhetoric. The smears will be over the top. The hits will be exaggerated; some may draw blood. The Twitter Trap will beckon. But Romney can’t succumb. He can’t flinch.”
“There is a reflexive desire among a certain species of moderate Republicans to be perceived as ‘civil’ by liberal opponents who believe that the mere existence of free-market, limited-government conservatism is an indecent affront to humankind. All aboard the U.S.S. Lost Cause…
“Romney’s smarter-than-thou strategists explain that he can’t scare off independents and Democrats with straight talk about Obama’s thuggery. But he’s turning off the conservative base, on whom his hold is tenuous. More importantly, Romney’s McCain-lite impersonation is also writing off independents and Democrats who’ve come to realize what the myriad targets of White House bullying have learned the hard way over the past four years: Barack Obama is not a ‘nice guy.’…
“There is nothing hateful about exposing Team Obama’s hardball tactics and government witch-hunts against taxpayers, businesses and political opponents.
“There is nothing unbecoming or un-presidential about questioning the Obama administration’s Chicago gangster treatment of dissidents, whistleblowers and watchdogs.”
“Welcome to the Obama campaign, version 2.0. If, as Mario Cuomo once said, you campaign in poetry and govern in prose, then running for reelection may be something akin to grunting at regular intervals. In 2008, Obamaland prided itself on rejecting such brass-knuckle politicking, much of it perfected by Bill Clinton. ‘We don’t do war rooms,’ was a Team Obama mantra, as one veteran of the campaign and the administration recalls. These days, by contrast, there are dozens of operatives raring to pounce on the slightest Republican misstep…
“Far from a badge of dishonor, though, the new ruthlessness is actually a sign of maturity. ‘It’s not like Bill Clinton created a war room because he had the personality for a war room,’ says the Obama administration veteran. ‘He did it because that’s what you have to do today to respond to the crazy shit that comes your way.’ What Obama and his team have accepted is that, while there’s a lot to be said for changing politics and elevating the discourse, your most important job as president is to defend your priorities. And the way to do that is to win…
“Some of the anxiety centers around Cutter, who oversees the daily combat operation in Chicago and is legendary in Democratic circles for her Dresden-esque tactics. Whereas the communications apparatus for the Romney campaign, like Obama’s in 2008, must simultaneously sell policies, craft speeches, and win each news cycle, Cutter has the advantage of commanding a deep bench of operatives whose only focus is the latter. ‘The point is, that’s all they’re doing,’ says the strategist close to the White House, noting that the West Wing shoulders the rest of the workload.”
“After months of depicting Mr. Romney as the ultimate squishy, double-talking, no-core soul, Team Obama is shifting gears. Senior administration officials, along with Democratic and campaign officials, all say their strategy now will be to tell the world that Mr. Romney has a core after all — and it’s deep red…
“David Plouffe, a senior White House adviser, said in a telephone interview, ‘Whether it’s tax policy, whether it’s his approach to abortion, gay rights, immigration, he’s the most conservative nominee that they’ve had going back to Goldwater.’ He added that ‘one of the key issues in the campaign is to make sure people know that.’”
“‘As soon as he put the dog on the roof of the car, I bailed,’ she said. ‘I don’t understand what that man was thinking. I can’t get my head around it!’”
“Virtually everyone interviewed gave Obama a pass on the dog meat, calling it a cultural difference. That included Ron Friedman, a Romney supporter from Gurnee, Ill., proud owner of a Pomeranian shih tzu.
“‘He was a young kid,’ said Friedman, who works in the health care industry. ‘It was the practice in that country. I won’t make this an issue when it’s not.’…
“Friedman added that he thinks the whole Seamus affair is a ‘cynical ploy’ — as is the dog-meat issue. He wants to see more substance. ‘Is this the worst they have on Romney? At least attack him on the issues!‘”

I don’t know about that, but I don’t think other countries have quite the same standards as the U.S. does when it comes to Mad Cow disease. So that could be the cause of his problems.
Now that I think about what you just said there, you may be correct.

Took me a sec but it’s coming back to me now.
I saw poverty overseas. Obama, the pathetic goof thinks he is worldly. Do you think he has EVER read a history book and got the big picture incl the fact that the world and all its foibles existed long before his malignant self showed up?

Could you change that to six months? That’s a more even time frame. (I’m a little OCD-LOL) It sounds like fun and no one would know where you are at any given time.

I drove through Arkansas once. I don’t have an urge to do it again. It smelled funny. Well, not funny, more like raw sewage.
You’re kind of forward, but what the heck! I’ll have to MapQuest Petticoat Junction (hope it’s not in Arkansas). I can cook too, but what I would need help with is backing up. I can’t do it very well in my car, and I’m thinking motor homes are more difficult.

Yep, I think he is aware of that just like all liberals are. The problem is that they try to use government and its power to “liberate” the poor, the downtrodden and the unsuccessful using government funds, regulations, legislation and policies to solve these inherent problems. The course of action they choose never, ever works, in any society anywhere yet they insist that the only problem is the method of implementation.
.
We know that smaller government, less regulation, meaningful oversight, equality of opportunity and effective but flexible legislation allows the best chance for all citizens to succeed, to achieve whatever they can in life and to be individually accountable, each for their own actions.
.
In addition, the opportunity for a person like Øbama or Pelosi or Reid to become craven and authoritarian in their use of government to achieve ends other than Constitutionally prescribed objectives is too great.

Yeah, I agree with that but how long have liberals exhibited faux concern in order to get control funds and processes to buy votes? The best evidence of their failure is to look at low income housing projects and the administration of welfare in general. It gives them a way to look concerned while spending other peoples’ money to develop a voter base.
.
Personal power, authoritarian control, hero worship, dependency, all those things are what liberals try to develop as part of their policies and plans.
ExpressoBold on April 21, 2012 at 2:06 AM
I’m not too worried about it. For decades, the left controlled all of the microphones, so they could say pretty much anything they liked with impunity.
Now, when they say something untoward (mostly lies and personal attacks), the right has a little capability to push back.

One time I was getting fuel on I-5 en route to our second house in OR. I’ve always liked motor homes but they are kind of costly. I’m putting gas in my truck and admiring this big honking motor home next to me. This lady gets out and she is probably 5’5″ if that. I was in awe. They intimidate me. Ron Portman would be ideal as Romney’s VP.
Portman is solid, never slips up. Doesn’t try to make everything about him, which is refreshing (are you listening, Sarah Palin, Newt and Rick Santorum?), very experienced, deep understanding of the issues, has reassuring demeanor, comes across as very honest.
Ron Portman is the anti-Sarah Palin in the sense that he is a serious pick and the furthest thing from gimmicky. You can count on Portman to stay focused on the real issues.
Oh, and he would help Romney win Ohio, a crucial swing state.
ROMNEY/PORTMAN 2012 is a winner
President Mitt Romney and Vice President Ron Portman… I like the sound of that. When they are elected, Americans will be able to breathe a sigh of relief knowing the executive branch is in capable hands.
bluegill on April 21, 2012 at 7:01 AM
How true that is.
Let Obama wallow in the small, petty, dishonest insults, while Romney continues to appear presidential and adult. Romney needs to relentlessly remind voters of Obama’s disastrous economic record. That’s the key to winning!
bluegill on April 21, 2012 at 7:07 AM
McCain also stayed “above the fray” . . . and got his butt kicked. Romney had better be prepared to go to bare knuckle drill if he wants to win.

The Romney campaign can and must have a social media interface group. With that said it needs to be one of civility and just a few pointed barbs here and there, while keeping up the pressure on Obama’s job performance and lack thereof. For the online civility assault he needs a proven leader that can keep track of relatively sophomoric responses and ensure that no counter-response descends to that level. He needs someone who is mature and trusted, able to be adaptable to an ever changing panoply of news and yet also level-headed enough to keep the eyes on the prize.
He needs… Ann Romney.
Do not put a geeky faced person in as the head of that group, do not put a techno-savvy yet somewhat out of touch specialist in. Put in someone who knows how to handle unruly children and keep a level of decorum that will frustrate the most childish of responders, which is the huge benefit of acting like an adult as it demolishes childish attitudes and starts to reshape them at the same time.
You don’t need a political hack for this.
You need a mom. One who can smilingly upbraid and condescendingly say ‘oh, really?’. That will terrify the Obama camp like nothing ever seen as attacking her automatically puts them on the losing side of women, moms and civility. It will kill future ‘war on women’ memes and, at the same time, raise the bar for politeness while still pointing out the problems with childish behavior in search of leftist politics.
Romney is supposed to be skilled at finding and putting good people into positions of responsibility. We are past the age of the wallflower wife and mom. Mitt needs someone to be a better side of him, and that better half is his wife. Plus she can remove the starch from his shorts by doing it and humanizing the campaign machine. The era of new media presents opportunities, as Breitbart pointed out so clearly, it is time for Mitt Romney to start thinking about that and go beyond a ‘truth squad’ or ‘war room’ and put some adults in charge who are good at lifting the tone and tenor of a campaign, and still show a good face and have a good time doing it.
I’m expecting more apparatchik types as Mitt picks for his campaign.
That is a sure loser in the 21st century.
The time to change is now, for the past is a loser and the future is full of light. Change the parameters of the campaign to one where Obama and his sycophants can’t get traction by showing them to be the children they are.
