Jay Carney: It’s absurd for the GOP to politicize these scandals that my side would surely politicize under a Republican president

posted at 7:21 pm on April 20, 2012 by Allahpundit

Skip to 4:39 below for a little Friday evening fake outrage, White House style. The gist:

Asked by CBS News’ Bill Plante whether, considering also the General Services Administration investigation, there’s been a “breakdown” in the White House’s oversight of federal agencies — as Palin, Sen. Jeff Sessions, and others have suggested — Carney replied, “Any assertion by those politicians that you mentioned should be valued by the cost that you paid for it. It is preposterous to politicize the Secret Service, to politicize the behavior of the terrible conduct of some soldiers in Afghanistan, in a war that has been going on for ten years.”…

“I think on the face of it is a ridiculous assertion that trivializes both the very serious nature of the endeavor that our military is engaged in in Afghanistan and the very serious nature both of the work the Secret Service does, the apolitical nature of the institution, and the seriousness of the investigation underway with regard to the Secret Service and the military and the incident in Colombia,” Carney said.

What do you think? Do you think the left and its media allies might weave a narrative or two if, under President Romney, in the span of a few weeks (a) a Secret Service advance team embarrassed the country by hiring hookers (three more agents resigned today), (b) the head of GSA had to resign due to obscenely lavish spending on a conference, and (c) photos of U.S. troops posing with jihadis corpses in Afghanistan surfaced? The “administration in chaos” headlines would fly, er, fast and furious instead of sporadic items like this that acknowledge Obama’s political problems from the scandals while spinning on his behalf. You don’t even need to bother with GSA and the Secret Service for this thought experiment, in fact. Imagine if Romney had doubled down on Afghanistan by sending tens of thousands of extra troops and then, after a few years of drift and Karzai corruption, suddenly we were hit by trophy photos, Koran-burnings, riots, fraggings, and finally an honest to goodness rampage by an American soldier. There’d be a lot of angry rhetoric out there about chickenhawks and empire and the length of deployments and the culture of wingnut warmongering that makes horrors like this possible. You don’t hear much of that now — and we all know why — but we will again just as soon as being anti-war becomes politically advantageous again for Democrats. So, with that in mind, enjoy Carney’s outrageous outrage, which wasn’t even the dumbest thing he said at today’s presser.

Would the left POLITICIZE misconduct if it happened during a Republican administration…………….

Well let’s look back at Abu Ghraib:

http://www.salon.com/2006/03/14/introduction_2/

“The Bush administration, which recently announced plans to shut the notorious prison and transfer detainees to other sites in Iraq, would like the world to believe that it has dealt with the abuse, and that it’s time to move on. But questions about what took place there, and who was responsible, won’t end with Abu Ghraib’s closure.”

The point is this: Obama’s political philosophy is one in which the greater the Federal Government’s role, the fairer and better life is for all American’s. That all the injustice in a society has its root in areas where the government cannot exert its ability to regulate, legislate, and adjudicate. What this SS scandal, the GSA scandal, the fast and furious scandal, the Solyndra scandal, and the Light Squared scandal all prove is that the Federal Government is just as faulty a vehicle for justice as any other human institution. If the Federal Government produces such a climate of corruption that SS members can whore it up in South America, then why on God’s green earth should I allow that government to get between me and my doctor? If our Justice Department is going to give guns to known drug lords, why should I trust them with more of my hard earned dollars. These scandals chop Obama’s philosophy at the knees. It proves that everyone’s worst fears about government run amok are in fact true.

peski on April 20, 2012 at 7:44 PM

What do you think? Do you think the left and its media allies might weave a narrative or two if, under President Romney…

You mean like claim that the price of gasoline is the fault of the President??

“…I’m a little peeved when I hear the President say there’s not much we can do about this, folks. According to the President, the American people have got to understand that what happens elsewhere in the world affects the price of gasoline that you pay here, but where is his responsibility in all this? Five and a half years and we’re dealing with these gas prices? It’s ridiculous.”

- Meredith Vieira

Or laugh at a President Romney after a small-ball press conference where he announced that he wanted to go after speculators in a way that would likely have adverse results after saying this:

“But the truth is, there is no easy answer to our energy crisis — and we need a president who’s going to be straight with us about that; a president who’s going to tell the American people not just what they want to hear, but what they need to know.”

Or remind him how he said this in 2008:

“If you don’t have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare the voters. If you don’t have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from. You make a big election about small things.”

interesting…wonder if he’s going to start saying ‘you betcha’, and dropping the hard ‘g’ sound when speaking words that end in -ing? :-)….

Bush ordered the dumb Iraq invasion.

Salahuddin on April 20, 2012 at 7:46 PM

Congress could have stopped him, but instead authorized the invasion. That’s how checks and balances work.

Except for Obama. See: Libya, kinetic action in.

…you don’t know anything about a corporate culture, do you?

KOOLAID2 on April 20, 2012 at 8:33 PM

Breitbart lives.

Philly on April 20, 2012 at 8:23 PM

o/t

LA coroner ruled that Breitbart’s death was caused by heart failure. No drugs — legal or illegal — were found in his system.

You know who this hurts? MMfA, DK, DU, CAP, etc., who were all betting that he was coked out of his mind and started defaming him immediately.

Bush ordered the dumb Iraq invasion.

Salahuddin on April 20, 2012 at 7:46 PM

Hillary did nothing to stop him. The left has selective memory.

Where was the small government crowd when Bush growing the federal government (DHS) and deficit (Medicare Part D) and starting unnecessary and unpaid for wars.

Salahuddin on April 20, 2012 at 8:06 PM

So Obama Hussein Odinga is growing the federal government and deficits because Bush did it too ?
And BTW, has Sheikh Baraka Dunham Sotero obtained the
US Congressional approval for deploying troops/dropping bombs in Libya and Uganda yet ? How is he gonna pay for those wars ?

Wait! Palin had a speechwriter?/

I hope this is the same person who wrote her GOP convention speech and CPAC speech (minus the digs at…Romney). I sincerely hope it’s not the same person wrote her Iowa speech.

Should be posted every day….

Barred on April 20, 2012 at 8:05 PM

Yes this should be posted everyday just to remind those that refuse to vote for Romney what 4 more years of President Zero will look like. Since he won’t be running for re-election he’ll be able to pull this cr*p daily.

redridinghood on April 20, 2012 at 8:48 PM

It is sad that he chose to become the ringleader of the Barack Obama Show, shown daily at around 2pm.

Newsweek’s Evan Thomas decreed O was “Sort of God” and Carney believed him. What could be a greater honor than to be Sort of God’s press secretary?

So, the barker (Carney) has taken to drinking during the WH press conference, I’m sure that was only coffee in his cup. I really think that Carney isn’t long for the press sec. job. Most press secs can only last 2 years. At some some point I think it, even for libs, takes it toll on their psyche. Jay must be reaching the “I can’t take this BS” range anymore.

No, Matthew Scully helped her with that speech, six months later he wrote a very defensive speech for Romney at CPAC, where he joked about the book advance that he wasn’t getting, and even threw a little jibe at Bristol.

This week has been such a disaster for Team OBlame-a that the usual Friday night news dump has been disrupted. Carney appeared to be under the influence – prolly still drunk from the Wednesday night WH BBQ. Can’t wait for his tell-all book & resulting HBO movie!
