Fired Secret Service agent bragged on Facebook about ogling Palin

posted at 8:41 am on April 20, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Three members of the Secret Service have been terminated for their involvement in a prostitution scandal in Cartagena, Colombia last week, a rather indiscreet affair for the advance team to President Obama’s visit for the Summit of the Americas.  It turns out that indiscretion isn’t exactly new, either.  One of the agents, David Randall Chaney, posted photos of himself on the job and made leering comments about one of his assignments:

One of the Secret Service supervisors ousted from the agency this week for their involvement in the Colombia prostitution scandal made light of his official protective work on his Facebook page, joking about a picture of himself standing watch behind Sarah Palin.

David Randall Chaney, 48, posted several shots of himself on duty in a dark suit and sunglasses, including one that shows him behind the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee during that campaign.

“I was really checking her out, if you know what i mean?” Chaney wrote in the comments section after friends had marveled at the photo. He is married and has an adult son.

TPM has two of the pictures from Chaney’s page. The pictures don’t depict anything unprofessional — just Chaney in the same frame as Palin — but the postings raise a couple of questions.  First, these very public postings should have alerted Secret Service supervisors of an unprofessional attitude.  Oh, wait, Chaney was a supervisor:

Chaney, who had been a supervisor in the Secret Service’s international programs division, retired under pressure Wednesday, according to people familiar with an internal agency investigation into the allegations that 11 agents and uniformed officers participated in a night of carousing April 11 ahead of President Obama’s visit to the Summit of the Americas.

If that is the way supervisors publicly talk about their protection subjects, well, I’d bet we’ll eventually find a lot more problems in the Secret Service.  Which brings me to my next question — this is the Secret Service, right?  How does a Secret Service agent — no, supervisor — have a Facebook page identifying himself, his job, and his protection assignments, past or present?  No one at the agency thought that would be a problem?

Chaney was allowed to take an early retirement; the other two agents got fired.  If this is indicative of the culture at the Secret Service, don’t be surprised if more than a few follow them out the door.

Update: Sarah Palin responded to this last night on Fox, via a few commenters:

“Well, this agent who was kind of ridiculous there in posting pictures and comments about checking someone out,” Palin told Greta van Susteren on her FOX News program. “Well check this out, bodyguard — you’re fired. And I hope his wife sends him to the doghouse. As long as he’s not eating the dog, along with his former boss. Greta, you know, a lot of people will just, I guess say that this is boys being boys. And boys will be boys, but they shouldn’t be in positions of authority.”

Zing!

Palin is sharp as a tack as always. She is by far my favorite commentator on Fox. I’m sure she’s not thrilled to be asked about how she feels about a Secret Service supervisor ogling her. There really are more important issues to discuss. But she does the best she can to paint the larger picture in this interview, which is that under the bad management of Obama, a whole raft of similar kinds of incidents and scandals are becoming increasingly common.

And isn’t that the truth! I’m hearing about new corruption, cronyism, waste and lack of professionalism in our government every day. What about this GSA party that was thrown for $800,000 in Las Vegas? What about Leon Panetta’s weekly home visits across the U.S. on the taxpayer’s dime costing close to a million dollars? What about Obama’s two kids partying in Mexico with an entourage of twenty-five secret agents right after an advisory was put out not to vacation in that country?

On and on, it never stops. Even mainstream reporters are beginning to ask pointed questions (provoking Obama’s recent snippy comment that the real reason he went down to Colombia was to scout out new vacation spots for Michelle).

I notice Palin kept directing attention in her interview (the long version which is on C4P) back to Obama as the “CEO” who needs to be blamed for the culture of corruption, moral laxness and extravagance and the one who needs to be held responsible for these recent embarrassments. As usual, she’s ahead of the curve and her instincts are perfect. Thank you, Sarah, for being there for us. If we had to depend for news analysis on Rove, Morris and O’Reilly, we’d be in serious trouble.

Palin is a perpetual victim. If the media just stopped reporting on the minutia of her emptiness, she would just disappear into the ether from which she came. Ergo, she lives for this stuff. It’s the only thing that keeps her in the news, albeit, in a national inquirer kind of way.

she was correct in pointing the attack to 0. I’m surprised how many people take just the tabloid side of the SS scandal (understandable to a certain degree) but tend to give 0 a pass on it, saying that it’s not his fault…sure, it’s not his fault per se, but obviously this wasn’t the first time incompetence of this magnitude happened in this agency, first it was the Salahis, no head rolled apart for that poor dolt Desiree who was just the party organizer really, then the hookers scadal, then the SP picture on FB (and honestly I believe it’s just the beginning of other revelations)…a scandal like the hookers leaves no doubt that there have been precedents and clearly that sort of things happened in the past, or else how the heck 12 agents went on a hooker spree, all at the same time, all knowing what the others were doing, etc…at this point it is correct to say that 0 was/is presiding over a corrupt or incompetent agency (or some people in it anyways) and that he knew about some aspects at least of said incompetence…and if he didn’t, he’s a bad/incompetent ‘boss’ himself…he shouldn’t be given a pass on this…Palin was right (never thought I’d say this :-)…

Thank you so much for finding that comment! It was a response to Bmore’s bff, cozmo, who had made a disgusting comment (not unlike Comrade Tom’s).

Apparently you missed your elementary school lessons on the use of quotation marks. If you’d had the lesson and weren’t of limited intellectual capacity, it would have been a clue that I was quoting cozmo and hitting him/her/it back with his/her/it’s own words. To be clear, the words he/she/it used were: “amoral” and “cuffed in the head”.

Sometimes I’m busy. No kidding! I have a minute before I go out again:

As I have said many times, I am not a fan of censorship (please don’t make me link to “Buy Danish” again). For example, unlike some here, I have never advocated that lib commenters some like to complain are “trolls” be banned, and as long as they don’t cross the line, and actually think their presence here serves a useful purpose. I have sent one ban-related email alert in all the years I’ve been here, and it was a comment which struck me as being violent in nature. Jokes about attending people’s funerals, abortions, sluts and the like strike me as being over the top. But it is up to management to monitor their own boards. I highlighted Comrade Tom’s tasteless comment because sunlight is the best disinfectant.

It’s rather pathetic that so many here decided to choose a team and they chose Team Tom. Rah Rah!

You know as well as any I do not mind walking someone to the door when it is appropriate, i.e. threats against other commenters. I have done it several times since signing on here. Folks can say things in the heat of an exchange that are not necessarily bannable offenses. I am just trying to know where the line is. It keeps getting moved around. You are correct it is ultimately up to our site moderators. I have no control over the glorious hammer. Though I wish I did. This incident is no surprise to me. When more scandals related to the secret service arise, they will also come as no surprise to me.

The GSA scandal is no surprise to me.

The Fast and Furious failure and subsequent coverups are no surprise to me.

The Solyndra scandal is no surprise to me.

All the many other “green” industry scandals that have occurred or will soon come to be known are no surprise to me.

Congressional insider trading is no surprise to me.

Wasteful Pentagon spending and war profiteering are no surprise to me.

The government paying $600 for freaking toilet seats comes as no surprise to me.

The next scandal that pops up will be no surprise to me.

Neither will the one after that.

Or the one after that.

Or the one after that.

Or the one after that.

This is what happens when a bureaucracy gets too big and too powerful – it becomes immoral and unethical, horrendously wasteful, and rife with graft and corruption. The people in said bureaucracy become so used to being flushed with an endlessly flowing supply of “free” money that it just rots their abilities to act in careful, conservative, conscientious ways of spending. Historically this has happened to every government of a declining nation, and it is happening here. No surprise to me.

“You know, the president, for one, he better be wary there of—when Secret Service is accompanying his family on vacation. They may be checking out the first lady instead of guarding her. And I say that not just tongue-in-cheek, but I say that seriously, that the president, the CEO of this operation called our federal government has got to start cracking down on these agencies! He is the head of the administrative branch and all these different departments in the administration that now people are seeing things that are so amiss within these departments.”

“The buck stops with the president. And he’s really got to start cracking down and seeing some heads roll. You know, he’s got to get rid of these people at the head of these agencies where so many things, obviously, are amiss,” she said. “Our president has poor management skills.”

that was Sarah’s response. Guess she forgot that the guy “checking her out” was still under the Bush administration. Funny she is unable to see that.

So the Secret Service ogles the people it is supposed to protect. Congress is investigating whether any of the Columbian prostitutes were underage. There were 25 Secret Service agents sent with the first daughter and her underage classmates to Mexico-presumably at Obama’s direction. This is getting creepier by the day.

“So Mr. Chaney, a thank you to you for opening our president up to blackmail at the hands of a Colombian prostitute, and for putting a stain on the reputation of the secret service, and, for at least a day, making Sarah Palin relevant.”

Ha! First of all, I’m not crying so I don’t need any Kleenex. Secondly, did I call her a “slut” (or even so much as imply anything even close to that)? If others did, did I cheer them on or encourage them in any way? If this concept is too difficult for you to understand perhaps you could enlist some help.

Idiot Sparky: Um, I was defending Sarah Palin. You really are a complete and utter dunce. If I were in charge of the ban hammer you’d be one of the first people on my list because abject stupidity is a pet peeve of mine. Portlandon made the list too today with her idiotic attempt at a “gotcha”. Now she’s indignant because she fell flat on her face and ended up looking like a fool…

Is sugar a cure for stupidity and jackasserie? If so, perhaps I should give you a 5 lb bag of it, which you could dole out as needed to those desperately in need of a cure:)

Bradky on April 20, 2012 at 5:07 PM

She was asked about something and she responded, with what was a witty reply. There was no outrage, faux, or otherwise. Methinks you are engaging in some serious projection, and you’re twisting yourself into some serious knots trying to criticize Palin over this. This says a whole lot more about you than it does Palin.

Do you have someone in your life who analyzes every word you say, trying to find a way to criticize you for them? I wouldn’t be surprised if that isn’t the reason you hate Palin and waste so much time attacking her on the Internet. You seriously need to get a life.
