Fired Secret Service agent bragged on Facebook about ogling Palin

posted at 8:41 am on April 20, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Three members of the Secret Service have been terminated for their involvement in a prostitution scandal in Cartagena, Colombia last week, a rather indiscreet affair for the advance team to President Obama’s visit for the Summit of the Americas.  It turns out that indiscretion isn’t exactly new, either.  One of the agents, David Randall Chaney, posted photos of himself on the job and made leering comments about one of his assignments:

One of the Secret Service supervisors ousted from the agency this week for their involvement in the Colombia prostitution scandal made light of his official protective work on his Facebook page, joking about a picture of himself standing watch behind Sarah Palin.

David Randall Chaney, 48, posted several shots of himself on duty in a dark suit and sunglasses, including one that shows him behind the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee during that campaign.

“I was really checking her out, if you know what i mean?” Chaney wrote in the comments section after friends had marveled at the photo. He is married and has an adult son.

TPM has two of the pictures from Chaney’s page. The pictures don’t depict anything unprofessional — just Chaney in the same frame as Palin — but the postings raise a couple of questions.  First, these very public postings should have alerted Secret Service supervisors of an unprofessional attitude.  Oh, wait, Chaney was a supervisor:

Chaney, who had been a supervisor in the Secret Service’s international programs division, retired under pressure Wednesday, according to people familiar with an internal agency investigation into the allegations that 11 agents and uniformed officers participated in a night of carousing April 11 ahead of President Obama’s visit to the Summit of the Americas.

If that is the way supervisors publicly talk about their protection subjects, well, I’d bet we’ll eventually find a lot more problems in the Secret Service.  Which brings me to my next question — this is the Secret Service, right?  How does a Secret Service agent — no, supervisor — have a Facebook page identifying himself, his job, and his protection assignments, past or present?  No one at the agency thought that would be a problem?

Chaney was allowed to take an early retirement; the other two agents got fired.  If this is indicative of the culture at the Secret Service, don’t be surprised if more than a few follow them out the door.

Update: Sarah Palin responded to this last night on Fox, via a few commenters:

“Well, this agent who was kind of ridiculous there in posting pictures and comments about checking someone out,” Palin told Greta van Susteren on her FOX News program. “Well check this out, bodyguard — you’re fired. And I hope his wife sends him to the doghouse. As long as he’s not eating the dog, along with his former boss. Greta, you know, a lot of people will just, I guess say that this is boys being boys. And boys will be boys, but they shouldn’t be in positions of authority.”

Zing!

Hookers were involved but is this really a “prostitution scandal?” Seriously, the (alleged) whores and drugs are not the reason why this is a scandal. It was the total lack of professionalism and lax procedures that make this scandalous.

They aren’t CIA, but you’d expect more restraint and professional decorum from a SS agent and supervisor (!). This seems like a case of becoming too familiar with the job and slacking standards.

And everyone knows that if an R were President, the media would be holding him/her personally responsible for the incident.

I’m fine with the fact that she threw in that cheap dig about Obama’s dog-eating ways, but, dang… does it ever make me glad she’s not the nominee. This woman would have given the Obama campaign so much material to work with to distract from Obama’s failed economic record.

I like her right where she is… in a tv studio and far from the campaign trail. She’s both attacking Obama (hopefully with some success) and providing a nice contrast to Romney, who looks so presidential and of even greater stature by comparison.

Great reply by Palin, and yes this clearly shows some massive problems both with this guy’s attitude and with inadequate supervision.

Still, I find this whole thing incredibly painful. I’ve had the good fortune to serve public officials who have had secret service protection, and I’ve admired their esprit de corps and have been grateful for the efficient protection they give to those who serve the public. They do a tough job and one of the few compensations has always been the high esteem in which they were held, which in turn attracts good people to that hard work.

I hope they can clean house there quickly, because the last thing this nation needs is a secret service that is a laughing stock.

One thing about social media, it exposes the idiots for what they are. Chaney is an unprofessional idiot.

Personally, I post nothing about my job, positive or negative, especially on sites like Facebook and Twitter. It’s safer that way.

A Secret Service agent who would post about how he was “checking out” Sarah Palin’s ass is too stupid to have his job. As far as I’m concerned, he shouldn’t have gotten early retirement. He should have been flat out fired.

it’s one thing to find yourself looking at and appreciating attractive people-it’s quite another to be a boorish slob with no respect for themselves and absolutely no respect for women. they’re supposedly highly qualified professional adults performing a quite necessary, personal, and serious job- and they’re yucking it up in the locker room about sucking tequila shots out of some co-ed’s belly button while on spring break.

real men may look but it’s only boys and cads that go about guffawing in public about a lady and her attributes. they need to hire adults and gentlemen and women not immature and rather pathetic children. i wouldn’t feel my loved one was safe with bozos like this leering after them instead of watching the crowd for threats.

That’s probably our biggest obstacle to getting one of our women elected. Conservative women tend to be attractive. The most attractive liberal women in politics look like Sandra Fluke or Hillary Clinton.

Women have an instinctive dislike for other women they perceive as being more attractive than them. It’s as hardwired into their brains as the instinct to evaluate the attractiveness of women we see is into the male brain.

Maybe “jackass” is too kind:

But what about Romney tending the baptismal for the dead?
tom daschle concerned on April 20, 2012 at 8:56 AM

Will being a god of his own planet be a step up or a step down from being POTUS, assuming he gets the nom and wins the general?

At her age, I guess Sarah will take it when she gets it.
inthemiddle on April 20, 2012 at 9:04 AM

It just goes to show there is no shortage of juveniles of all political persuasions posting comments at blogs, many of whom are both sophomoric and duncelike.

Chaney was allowed to take an early retirement

RETIRED. At age 48. And let me guess : he’s going to sit on his ass and collect a guaranteed pension courtesy you and me.

Marcus on April 20, 2012 at 9:32 AM

That is pretty bad. Considering the job he has you would think it is verboten to publish anything about their jobs on any social networking media. I wonder if there are any rules concerning this and if he was in violation of them.

NotCoach on April 20, 2012 at 8:51 AM

I bet they don’t have any such rules. It takes getting burned several times for bureaucracies to change. They might now promulgate some ineffective guidance, soon forgotten among myriad others. It takes external forces to make it happen quickly.

Fenris on April 20, 2012 at 9:35 AM

If the agent was ogling Palin, his mind wasn’t on his job. This is how people get shot. These agents should be focused solely on the job at hand and that would be to protect their subject. If I was the president, I would be worried that the one who was supposed to ‘take the bullet’ so to speak, wasn’t paying attention. The SS isn’t CIA so they don’t hide their employment, but they don’t advertise it on Facebook, either.

Kissmygrits on April 20, 2012 at 9:37 AM

Wonder how many men Secret Service agents brag about checking out Hitlary or Mochelle?

idesign on April 20, 2012 at 9:28 AM

O.K., that made me ill……

ToddPA on April 20, 2012 at 9:38 AM

Actually I may have overestimated the intellectual capacity of the doltish inthemiddle on April 20, 2012 at 9:04 AM so I’ll provide a more direct comment which does the math for him/her/it:

Michelle Obama is 48 years old, just like Sarah Palin.

Buy Danish on April 20, 2012 at 9:39 AM

Is Sarah Palin OK? She looks a little odd in that video at Real Clear Politics. Her face looks like she’s lost weight. I hope she’s not ill.

Lickmuffin on April 20, 2012 at 9:39 AM

ummm.. they’re gonna have to fire us all. :)

faraway on April 20, 2012 at 9:40 AM

I ogle all the time!
I’m married…that’s all I can do, for 28 years.
I love my wife…but I’m not dead.
She ogle’s too! It’s a menu thing…we eat at home!

There something wrong with that?

KOOLAID2 on April 20, 2012 at 8:49 AM

Yes.

fossten on April 20, 2012 at 9:43 AM

Anyway, sometimes I wonder if bluegill’s attacks on Palin are meant to fire up Obama supporters.

Fallon on April 20, 2012 at 9:47 AM

Forgive me Father, for I have ogled.

Heh.
We now have the official response of lefties with Palin-puckered sphincters.

Dr. Carlo Lombardi on April 20, 2012 at 9:48 AM

Just wait for the ex-Secret Service book deals exposing what a vicious and classless piece of work both Obama and Mochelle are.

Maybe I can add articles on this to my Facebook page. I certainly would not want to post there about work, or where I am going.

WhatNot on April 20, 2012 at 9:48 AM

Michelle Obama is 48 years old, just like Sarah Palin.

Yeah, but which one did the Porn Industry make a movie about??

ToddPA on April 20, 2012 at 9:49 AM

In fairness, it is pretty hard to blame the guy for checking out Sarah Palin.

We needed a break from the war on dogs.

the_nile on April 20, 2012 at 8:51 AM

I’ve been enjoying the hell out of it…

Every person involved should be fired, in my opinion. We still have not heard which White House staffers were in that hotel and why they did not report this week long orgy. Same question regarding the members of the press staying there.

Are we supposed to believe they didn’t hear or see anything?
