WSJ poll: Romney leads Obama by six when voters are asked who has good ideas to improve the economy

posted at 9:23 pm on April 19, 2012 by Allahpundit

The bad news from the big new WSJ/NBC poll? O leads overall by six and leads Romney head to head on most intangibles, including big leads on likability, compassion, women’s issues, and looking out for the middle class. The good news? Part of that lead is no doubt driven by the fact that many voters haven’t paid enough attention to the race yet to be able to pick Romney out of a line-up. As they get to know him, the gap will presumably (hopefully?) close. The better news? On the one issue that matters above all others, Romney’s already competitive. Here’s the PDF of the crosstabs; pay special attention to page 15 and then pages 17-18, which is where they delve into opinion on the economy. On the question of who has good ideas to improve it, Romney already leads by six points, which is two points more than his lead was back in November.

And yet. For the second time today — dude, I’m nervous:

That’s an awfully nice trend for O, especially after the disappointing jobs report last month. But wait, you say — isn’t he still in a lot of trouble given that nearly two-thirds say that his policies have either hurt the economy or had no effect? Answer: In theory, yes, but behold.

The margin of error is especially large for each of those data points because the questions are being asked of only half the sample, but if Romney’s really just slightly ahead of O on a gut-check question of who’d do more to get the economy on track, that’s … worrisome. I would think this is where he’d start out with a big lead, with Obama needing distinct improvement in unemployment over the next six months to catch up. Instead they’re about on par. Hmmmm.

Oh, and as for Obama’s lead among Latinos: 47 points right now, 69/22. Exit question: Time to refocus the campaign on dog-eating?

Total number of jobs are down under Obama and nothing is looking to perk those numbers up. It isn’t just ‘unemployment’ but the unemployed who are no longer counted in the stats.

Now we get slightly higher unemployment numbers, another shake-out in the housing sector, kids moving back in with their parents because they can no longer afford college debt… and can’t find a job… and not a single one of these things can turn around fast enough to have enough effect to actually make the economy look pale, not perky just pale and wan, slowly wasting away.

Obama’s war on fossil fuels is driving up the price of everything.

And ‘liking’ the guy is supposed to be enough to reward his actual job performance?

I’m starting to guess that likeability is just a bit overblown at this point. I can like a man and still say he isn’t fit to do a job. And the desperation from the Obama camp and their parasites is beyond belief and its not even close to NOV. They do not look like ‘winners’ full of ‘tiger blood’. More a whiny bunch of lefties who don’t like that people are figuring out that they are being taken for a ride.

GOPRanknFile on April 19, 2012 at 9:41 PM

Please, none of these polls mean a damn thing at this point, whether they favor Obama or Romney. The time to start looking at polls is in early October. Whatever they say at that point, take away 2 points from the incumbent and add 2 to the challenger. Works every time it’s tried.

Now, current polls until then do affect major contributor’s to a degree, but this time around, when that crowd knows they’re f*cked if Obama gets re-elected, you might throw out that rule of thumb.

What we need to worry about, more than anything, is desperation seeping into Team Obama’s mindset, and their willingness to do anything, and I mean anything, to secure his re-election and the concomitant destruction of capitalism and the USA, except for those who will benefit from same.

I put nothing past them in this regard, from developing an understanding with Iran that we might have to play-bomb them, say, in October, to orchestrating a few grade school bombings/hostage situations in various cities with the help of their useful idiots in the Muslim Brotherhood, New Black Panthers, etc.

Gallup Polls in April: What Can The Past Tell Us About The Future?

It was very surprising. Keep your eye on the Gallup average for April. Every Gallup poll head-to-head in April has predicted the winner since 1956 except for 1980 and 1992. In 1980 and 1982, Carter and Bush had 7 and 19 point leads, respectively, before going on to lose. None of the incumbents or nominees, who were behind in April, went on to win in April. Obama has been trailing Romney in the Gallup polls.

cicerone on April 19, 2012 at 9:54 PM

The tracking polls like Gallup and Rasmussen show the election as very close. Since the undecideds tend to go to challengers (see Sean TRend, Dick Morris and Jay Cost recent articles) and in early polling incumbents that are well known tend to have higher poll margins than at the end of the campaign when their challanger is better known, I am not yet worried. In polls where the undecided rated Obama’s job performance it was quite negative. I would think some would be more likely to not bother to vote rather than vote for Obama while many others would say OK what the heck, lets see what Romney is like.

I would be more worried if Obama started polling above 50% in the battleground states; but that is not happening yet.

One of the Secret Service supervisors who were ousted from the agency this week for their involvement in the Colombia prostitution scandal made light of his official protective work on his Facebook page, joking about a picture of himself standing watch behind Sarah Palin.

David Randall Chaney, 48, posted several shots of himself on duty in a dark suit and sunglasses, including one that shows him behind the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee during that campaign.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said news of the three agents leaving the Secret Service was a positive development but says more people may have to go.

The Secret Service is moving quickly to quell a prostitution scandal, forcing three agents out of government less than a week after the embarrassing incident came to light.

“I was really checking her out, if you know what i mean?” Chaney wrote in the comments section after friends had marveled at the photo. He is married and has an adult son.

This poll is a joke. You need to look at polls conducted over several months. That’s why Rasmussen has been the most accurate over last 2 presidential election cycles. He polls every day so his polls are more consistent. In addition, his polls aren’t skewed as he has R’s and D’s pretty evenly split. The fact that he and Gallup have Obama at 45% or under means that Obama is in deep trouble and will not get above 47% of the popular vote.

Latino vote is going to crush the GOP this year.

libfreeordie on April 19, 2012 at 9:29 PM

Maybe, but this poll doesn’t show that.

This is the same kind of gap polls of registed voters were showing between Obama and McCain, for example. Obama then won by 36%.

Latino’s turnout rates are still fairly lower than average and affect Democrats disproportionally (because some of their constituencies like poor Puerto Ricans, single moms and 18-24 year old have very low turnover rates). Generally once you apply a likely voter screen there’s a 10 points swing in the hispanic vote favoring the Republicans.

Huh? The economy? Deficits? Debt?

Obviously that’s all Bush’s fault!

farsighted on April 19, 2012 at 10:06 PM

I must have forgotten the part where Bush paid for his 2 wars, Homeland Security Dept., massive tax cuts and Medicare part D before he left office. oh by the way the economy was booming when he left office, right?

We need more and more government “investments”

What does that mean… the government invests heavily in R&D at both the university and private level, especially through military budgets. It has led to important innovation and kept the US among the most innovative countries in the world.

A recent example and extraordinary success is the US investment in SpaceX, a company driving rocket science innovation that is turning the US into the leader in launching satellites and delivery cargo to space. Even the Chinese have admitted that SpaceX is so disruptive that not even Chinese companies can compete SpaceX on price.

Barry’s fragile psyche won’t make it until November. Polling should be Romney vs Biden.

Why?

Could either one of the guys be elected dogcatcher?

you contradict yourself there…you said AP is smart and funny…your side, on the other hand, is known to be retarded, uninformed and awfully un-funny, so why on earth would P ever cross to your side??? that would be the equivalent of dumbing down…

An entirely predictable outcome. Now you understand i’ts not true that “deficits don’t matter”. When the economy is artificially fueled by deficit spending and tax cuts, things never end well in the aftermath of a deep recession and asset bubble collapse.

Most economists, including the CBO, estimate that Obama inherited a $800 bil structural deficit. As Greece has demonstrated, deep spending cuts aren’t much of a prescription either.

bayam on April 19, 2012 at 10:54 PM

Terrible poll result for Romney. If he isn’t closer with the high gas prices, unemployment struggles, etc, then he has no chance once the attack ads start. So this guy was the electable one, huh?

gumbyandpokey on April 19, 2012 at 10:55 PM

McCain vs Barry as a analogy to 2012 is incorrect, Giuliani vs Dunkins back in 1993 is a much better comparison.

galtani on April 19, 2012 at 10:58 PM

Oh, and as for Obama’s lead among Latinos: 47 points right now, 69/22.

From Bush’s 44% to Romney’s 20%. My God, complete takeover by the left is inevitable if numbers don’t start reversing.

El_Terrible on April 19, 2012 at 11:10 PM

Hey Allahpundit, regarding the following comments:

And yet. For the second time today — dude, I’m nervous:

and

The margin of error is especially large for each of those data points because the questions are being asked of only half the sample, but if Romney’s really just slightly ahead of O on a gut-check question of who’d do more to get the economy on track, that’s … worrisome. I would think this is where he’d start out with a big lead, with Obama needing distinct improvement in unemployment over the next six months to catch up. Instead they’re about on par. Hmmmm.

I’m not a huge fan of Romney, but even on his worst day he’d be better in the job as President than the neophyte who is running around with is diapers around his ankles right now.

Why don’t you try the following suggestion, present the data. Let those HotAir followers who have anxiety issues out there worry, but don’t add to it.

I’m not saying, “Be a mindless drone for the GOP.” like Hannity, I’m just suggesting be critical of the data, and don’t ad lib your anxiety about their significance.

Jeez, if there is one thing that liberal morons can smell, its weakness. This is a huge reason why the GOP never does well. Poor messaging, and a lack of courage in the face of political bullying. I can’t stand that. I am not republican, but certainly NOT a democrat. Being fiscally conservative, otherwise libertarian, this is a reason why some independents out there will vote for Obama, or Johnson rather than Romney (presuming he has the nomination).

People follow leaders, not those who start to panic in the face of poll numbers…

So Allahpundit, start following the advice of Patches O’Houlihan when he said,

If you want to have a dodgeball victory, you have to grab it by its haunches and you gotta hump it into submission!

and

Tomorrow, we’re gonna pecker-slap those Globo-Gym bastards!

Danny on April 20, 2012 at 9:37 AM

I can’t keep readin Allahpundit’s comments if he keeps saying he is nervous. Do we already know the partisan breakdown? Is it kosher?

I would say that for the past two months I have heard mostly the economy is coming back but now that seems to be changing. And many people don’t know Romney. And we haven’t had a single debate between them. So I think I will wait before I freak out.
