Martin Bashir to Romney: The Book of Mormon forbids lying, you know

posted at 8:35 pm on April 19, 2012 by Allahpundit

I’m … pretty sure the Bible does too, yet rarely do you see chapter and verse cited on cable news when a Democrat or Republican lies. Go figure. But then, I guess we’ve reached this point in the campaign against Romney now.

Meanwhile, at the Daily Beast, here’s what Montana’s Democratic governor, Brian Schweitzer, is thinking about today:

While discussing swing states, Schweitzer said Romney would have a “tall order to position Hispanics to vote for him,” and I replied that was mildly ironic since Mitt’s father was born in Mexico, giving the clan a nominal claim to being Hispanic. Schweitzer replied that it is “kinda ironic given that his family came from a polygamy commune in Mexico, but then he’d have to talk about his family coming from a polygamy commune in Mexico, given the gender discrepancy.” Women, he said, are “not great fans of polygamy, 86 percent were not great fans of polygamy. I am not alleging by any stretch that Romney is a polygamist and approves of [the] polygamy lifestyle, but his father was born into [a] polygamy commune in Mexico.”

Read Noah Rothman’s post at Mediaite fact-checking Bashir on his shpiel. If you’d never seen the now-famous graph cooked up by Obama’s team before the stimulus passed projecting how much unemployment would drop after it did, you’d never know that the two unnamed “analysts” with “limited access to data” whom Bashir mentions were Christina Romer and Jared Bernstein, core members of Obama’s economic brain trust. But see, it’s Romney who’s the liar. Exit question: Second look at the relative subtlety and understated good taste of Keith Olbermann?

I think it is rather interesting that they are trotting out the anti-Mormonism already. I am starting to think this is all they have left to hit him with. If this is true, we are in good shape. It seems to me that campaigns trot out these memes and run with them for as long as they will go, and then they become old news and nobody cares about it any more. If they are going with this this early in the game, then they really have nothing on him. Boring Mitt for the win!

Independent centrist voters love when the candidates’ parents and religions are attacked, so I encourage all Democrats to follow suit and press these issues strongly.

I’m surprised by the lack of discipline democrats talking-heads and officials are showing early in this cycle. Reminiscent of Republicans a few years ago. Too much complacence and arrogance.

Did Romney’s father practice bigamy and wife-beating, like Obama’s father did?

Despite titling it Dreams From My Father, the absent parent was little more than a shadow. ‘After a week of my father in the flesh, I had decided that I preferred his more distant image,’ reflected Barack Obama on the short time they spent together in his boyhood.
‘If my father hadn’t exactly disappointed me, he remained something unknown, something volatile and vaguely threatening.’
Well, he is unknown no longer. He has been bought to life in a compelling biography by American journalist Sally H. Jacobs. And what a vile man he turns out to have been: a drunken, wife-beating, bribe-taking bigamist of extreme arrogance, who spent much of his life propping up bars while bemoaning his fate and running down rivals.

Here is the thing about him going after his Mormonism- Romney is well prepared for it. I was born in Utah, born into the church, in the early 70s, when the LDS church was still in relative obscurity. As a Mormon, having lived all over the country, you get used to the questions and sometimes hostility toward your religion. It really ramped up as the church got bigger and built more temples, most Mormons already have ready answers to most questions. Romney will do a good job.

It’s amusing that the Democrats are at all willing to bring up polygamy.

After all, wasn’t Mr. Obama’s father in two marriages simultaneously at the point Mr. Obama himself was conceived?

As I seem to recall (someone correct me if I’m wrong), bigamy is a subset of polygamy.

And, if you want to get even more into this, Mr. Obama’s father married yet a third person after leaving Mr. Obama’s mother — and did so before Mr. Obama’s mother divorced him….

In the United States, such Muslims may have already reached numerical parity with their fundamentalist-Mormon counterparts; as many as 100,000 Muslims reside in multi-wife families, and the phenomenon has gained particular traction among black Muslims.”
