Martin Bashir to Romney: The Book of Mormon forbids lying, you know

posted at 8:35 pm on April 19, 2012 by Allahpundit

I’m … pretty sure the Bible does too, yet rarely do you see chapter and verse cited on cable news when a Democrat or Republican lies. Go figure. But then, I guess we’ve reached this point in the campaign against Romney now.

Meanwhile, at the Daily Beast, here’s what Montana’s Democratic governor, Brian Schweitzer, is thinking about today:

While discussing swing states, Schweitzer said Romney would have a “tall order to position Hispanics to vote for him,” and I replied that was mildly ironic since Mitt’s father was born in Mexico, giving the clan a nominal claim to being Hispanic. Schweitzer replied that it is “kinda ironic given that his family came from a polygamy commune in Mexico, but then he’d have to talk about his family coming from a polygamy commune in Mexico, given the gender discrepancy.” Women, he said, are “not great fans of polygamy, 86 percent were not great fans of polygamy. I am not alleging by any stretch that Romney is a polygamist and approves of [the] polygamy lifestyle, but his father was born into [a] polygamy commune in Mexico.”

Read Noah Rothman’s post at Mediaite fact-checking Bashir on his shpiel. If you’d never seen the now-famous graph cooked up by Obama’s team before the stimulus passed projecting how much unemployment would drop after it did, you’d never know that the two unnamed “analysts” with “limited access to data” whom Bashir mentions were Christina Romer and Jared Bernstein, core members of Obama’s economic brain trust. But see, it’s Romney who’s the liar. Exit question: Second look at the relative subtlety and understated good taste of Keith Olbermann?

Not only was Bashir’s rant disgusting, it was also false (how ironic….). The first scripture that he quoted is from the LDS church’s Doctrine and Covenants, which is NOT in the Book of Mormon, yet the graphic on the screen noted that it was from the Book of Mormon. Oh, and he made a complete hash of pronouncing 2 Nephi (its ‘Knee-fie’), the book in the Book of Mormon from which the second quote was taken…

If you are going to be bigoted and hate-filled, and claim that Romney is going to hell for lying, and if you are going to quote LDS scripture to do it, the least you can do is not lie about the source…… /s

The LDS faith and its members value education very highly. They practice prudence and thrift. They are consistently among the most highly educated, most moral, most conservative voting, most constitution loving, and yes, wealthiest demographics. The idea that this makes the LDS church dangerous is crazy. It is a stance that simply cannot be supported with a shread of fact. On the contrary, the typical LDS member strives to live a live which is 100% consistent with the key planks of Conservatism.

It is a matter of common belief in the LDS church that the Constitution of the United States is a divinely inspired document, and that it must be upheld. There is not a single piece of evidence beyond wild conspiracy that suggests that the church itself is involved in attempting to wield political power. They do teach however that it is incumbent upon all good citizens to be involved in the political process, and to work to elect leaders of integrity, honesty and those who would uphold the liberties guaranteed by the constitution. None of this is the stance of an organization that is trying to secretly take over the US Government.

Hey, it is not my idea but one that you hold dear to, Brigham Young stated that the US Constitution would be at the point of collapse and “the elders of Israel” or LDS officials would save the government.

You want to deny one of your founders, you go ahead.

Words of Joseph Smith:

The History of the Church account is an amalgamation of the reports in the Joseph Smith Diary and the Nauvoo Neighbor. The report by Levi Richards is here published for the first time. A reminiscent account of this discourse by James Burgess contains the essential details found in the other three accounts published here, and adds that the “Constitution and Government would hang by a brittle thread.”

In the month of May 1843. Several miles east of Nauvoo. The Nauvoo Legion was on parade and review. At the close of which Joseph Smith made some remarks upon our condition as a people and upon our future prospects contrasting our present condition with our past trials and persecutions by the hands of our enemies. Also upon the constitution and government of the United States stating that the time would come when the Constitution and Government would hang by a brittle thread and would be ready to fall into other hands but this people the Latter day Saints will step forth and save it.

By the way, it may be nice to know how well mannered and great behavior Mormons have. However, being in agreement with Arianism, Pelagianism and Open theism would make the Mormon religion outside of Christianity.

PuritanD71 on April 20, 2012 at 1:38 AM

Here is some more

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 2, p. 182, Brigham Young, February 18, 1855

Brethren and sisters, our friends wish to know our feelings towards the Government. I answer, they are first-rate, and we will prove it too, as you will see if you only live long enough, for that we shall live to prove it is certain; and when the Constitution of the United States hangs, as it were, upon a single thread, they will have to call for the “Mormon” Elders to save it from utter destruction; and they will step forth and do it.

We love the Constitution of our country; it is all we could ask; though in some few instances there might be some amendments made which would better it.

And then to make the case for constant contradictions found in Mormonism

Writing in 1979, LDS Apostle Bruce R. McConkie dismissed the prophesy as a forgery:

From time to time, accounts of various supposed visions, revelations, and prophecies are spread forth by and among the Latter-day Saints, who should know better than to believe or spread such false information. One of these false and deceptive documents that has cropped up again and again for over a century is the so-called White Horse Prophecy. This supposed prophecy purports to be a long and detailed account by the Prophet Joseph Smith concerning the wars, turmoils, and difficulties which should exist in the last days.

It is a sad commentary on the spiritual insight of professing saints that they will generate intense interest in these supposed prophetic utterances and yet know little of and pay less attention to the volumes of true and sound prophetic writings which delineate authoritatively the course of latter-day world events. It is known by all informed gospel students that whenever revealed truth, new or old, is to be sent forth for the enlightenment of the saints and of the world, it will be announced officially and publicly by the First Presidency.

At least until 1966, this prophecy was believed to be true and upheld and taught. Then this one denies it and all the while it still hangs out there to be true.

Barack Obamas father was a polygamist.

Barack Obama senior was a serial womaniser and polygamist who government and university officials were trying to force out of the country.
Obama senior married Stanley Ann Dunham, a white student from Kansas, not only when he was said to have already been married to a woman in Kenya, but at a time when interracial marriages were still illegal in many parts of the U.S.

I didn’t hear Schweitzer open his ignorant yap about that.

Obama’s father, who apparently converted to Catholicism while attending a Roman Catholic school, was also polygamous in keeping with local custom, taking an informal Kenyan wife who preceded Obama’s mother but remained a consort, according to accounts by local people and the senator himself.

So why hasn’t Schweitzer called Barry illegitimate? The hypocrisy of these idiots makes me sick.

The more I learn about Mormons the more I am convinced they are good, decent and caring people who belong to a benign cult. At this point in history I would never fear a committed Mormon and would expect kindness and compassion from them. But they are not Christians. You cannot serve two masters. You cannot revere the Bible and the Book of Mormon. If one is real, the other must be a fantasy. My only concern about LDS is that I’m not sure it will always be a benign cult. I don’t think it will ever be a cult of death like Islam, but I think they are pretty secretive about their ultimate goal. Again, this isn’t my problem with Mittens. He has so much to answer for that outweighs this. I may yet vote for him, but I will keep him in my crosshairs (politically speaking of course) and I will never trust him.

I’d say the real problem with the average Mormon isn’t their Theology, however extra-biblical it may be, but the same problem that the average Evangelical has, and that is they have a fundamental this-world view of reality and live their faith from that perspective.

In other words, the concerns of this life trump the concerns of the next which is supposed to be the real emphasis of one’s faith if it’s grounded in the Bible, and so, like everyone else, they are susceptible to the siren song of materialism and are enslaved by it.

Their faith is merely a cover sheet.

Did Romney’s father practice bigamy and wife-beating, like Obama’s father did?

Despite titling it Dreams From My Father, the absent parent was little more than a shadow. ‘After a week of my father in the flesh, I had decided that I preferred his more distant image,’ reflected Barack Obama on the short time they spent together in his boyhood.
‘If my father hadn’t exactly disappointed me, he remained something unknown, something volatile and vaguely threatening.’
Well, he is unknown no longer. He has been bought to life in a compelling biography by American journalist Sally H. Jacobs. And what a vile man he turns out to have been: a drunken, wife-beating, bribe-taking bigamist of extreme arrogance, who spent much of his life propping up bars while bemoaning his fate and running down rivals.

I’m … pretty sure the Bible does too, yet rarely do you see chapter and verse cited on cable news when a Democrat or Republican lies.

Depends. An unfortunate number of Christians cite Romans 3:4 as giving them license to lie if they think they are doing a service to the Lord (which is not at all what I understand the verse to mean, when read in context). I don’t think they are a majority by any means, but they do exist.

It is a lie, but let’s remember that we’re not going to be getting anywhere with vinegar either. Puritan, before you try to read a whole bunch into a “rumorism” that wasn’t even published until 50+ years after it happened, try reading up on what it was & wasn’t: Truth on White Horse Prophecy.

There’s a whole lot of slur that’s going to be cast – it’s a given. Some people here casting that have gotten 0w3nd, and rightfully so. Just remember, it’s a lot of projection and little on fact.

The idea that the LDS Church wants to secretly take over the U.S. Government is complete lie. It is bullshit.

Why do we even discuss this loser:

February / 2012
His show averaged 410,000 viewers, 95,000 of them 25-54 year olds.
CNN averaged 478,000, with 85,000 of them 25-54, and,
Fox News Channel averaged 885,000 viewers, with 153,000 aged 25 to 54.

410,000 viewers at 3pm in any given afternoon and I’ll bet he’s preach’n to the choir. His thoughts and subsequent verbal assaults over the airwaves are meaningless.

Since when do we need leftist wackos (who are probably atheists) to teach us religion?

Aren’t these the same people who go insane at every public display of religion, and who constantly push a statist/atheist agenda???

When this sort of foolishness occurs, these people should be forcibly reminded of their “you’re not qualified to comment on X unless you have experienced X” meme!!

How dare this libtard question someones faith?

David Limbaugh: Is Obama a Christian?
Washington Examiner ^ | 8/27/2010 | David Limbaugh

Rick Santorum Questioned Obama’s Faith In 2008, Said There’s No Such Thing As A Liberal Christian
When asked if he believed Obama is a “sincere liberal Christian,” the former Pennsylvania senator said he didn’t believe that sort of ideology exists, and that Obama’s church, United Church of Christ in Chicago, had “abandoned Christendom” and used a non-literal interpretation of the Bible.
