Romney: This election is about jobs, not about Obama eating dogs

posted at 4:16 pm on April 18, 2012 by Allahpundit

C’mon. It’s a little bit about Obama eating dogs. The data doesn’t lie, my friends.

The sad truth: A few more months of weak job growth and The One might actually prefer an election about dog-eating.

Mitt Romney today asserted that the general election will be about “jobs not dogs,” when asked by a radio host today about the media’s focus on his former dog Seamus and the president’s admission that he once ate dog meat.

“This campaign is ultimately going to become about jobs not dogs,” said Romney in an interview with Bill Cunningham on WLW radio in Ohio. “You recognize of course that some members of the media, and certainly the DNC and the White house itself are going to do everything in their power to divert the attention of the voter from the failure of the president to try to turn around the economy.”…

Romney appeared uninterested in furthering the story line about his own dog or the president’s childhood meals, instead bringing the focus of the interview back to the way President Obama has handled the economy.

As president and would-be president, O and Mitt have to rise above the mouth-breathing stupidity of dog-themed talking points. Fortunately for bloggers like me who are hungry for cheap traffic, there are plenty of surrogates out there who don’t. Tell ‘em what’s up, “Dogs Against Romney” guy:

The founder of the grassroots organization Dogs Against Romney called the Romney campaign “desperate” for dredging up the revelations that President Obama ate dog meat as a child in Indonesia.

“It seems desperate for the Romney campaign to bring up something that happened to Obama when he was 10 years old, not preparing his own meals, in a country where eating dog meat probably isn’t all that unusual as if it compares in any way to Romney, as a 36-year old adult, in America, making the conscious decision to strap his family pet to the roof of a car for a 12-hour drive, and leaving it up there even after it got sick.”…

“If President Obama had made the conscious decision to eat dog meat as a 36-year old adult, in America, claimed the dog liked being eaten, and still claimed he didn’t think there was anything wrong with it, the Romney campaign would have a point and my pack would be on the president like a pack of wild, well….dogs,” Crider wrote. “But that isn’t what happened.”

I love the fact that even for a meme as dumb as this, which is being pushed as a goof on how moronic the Democrats’ “dog” attacks on Romney are, you’ve still got Obama shills very earnestly engaging with the subject to try to draw a contrast. But then, they have to, right? Like I said last night, the story about Mitt and Seamus really is part of Hopenchange’s campaign strategy. They’re not going to win on the issues but maybe, if they spend enough, they can create enough of a “likability gap” to nose out Romney at the wire. See streiff at Red State for more on that. Quote: “If he can convince you that Romney is a cross between Scrooge McDuck and Moe Howard who adheres to a very strange set of religious beliefs then he wins.”

Here’s Scarborough and company treating the “dog” wars with precisely the degree of seriousness that they deserve.

Mitt Romney is a businessman. He understands the concept of marketing and PR better than any politician does and he also knows how to build a team of people who are the best at what they do. Romney’s first choice will not be to go for the best “connected” to provide a service, but for the most competent.

As president and would-be president, O and Mitt have to rise above the mouth-breathing stupidity of dog-themed talking points.

You’re missing the entire point here, AP. This isn’t about animal cruelty, it’s about the judo. As with the “moms” attack, Obama lunged with the dog attack and got flipped on his can. It’s important not because of the topics, but because of the huge backfires.

whatcat on April 18, 2012 at 4:54 PM

But it’s all well and good for Romney to say “this is an election about jobs”, but Obama can retort “This from a guy who made a personal fortune by taking away people’s jobs”, and then trot out the steel mill story and the line “I like to fire people.”

What’s Mitt going to say? If the conservasphere tries to respond with “that’s how capitalism works”, that’s just going to encourage middling voters to say they dislike capitalism.

Obama doesn’t want the discussion to be about jobs. That’s the point. He’s not going to engage on that score…it’s likely they’ll double down on ‘look at what we inherited’ and so forth, but they won’t get into a tit for tat on a subject that Obama cannot win on.

PattyJ on April 18, 2012 at 5:05 PM

Great approach. Here is what Mitt needs to say:

This is not about Obama’s dog eating, wife beating, or child molesting, my fellow citizens. This is about getting America back to work. If our president wants to do those things, or has done them in the past, we forgive him, and we put it behind us. We don’t care what third world country he may, or may not, have been born in. He’s our president, whether he was born in Kenya, or Malaysia.

We are not his moral superiors, so we can not condemn him for the corruption that is rife in Washington and the scandals that have arisen from his actions. No, my fellow Americans, we are bigger than that. He has done his best these past 4 years with what God has given him. Only a soulless person would mock the physically handicapped, the mentally challenged, or the president. And while many may justly criticize that fact that we are much worse off today than four years ago, who among us can say he has never tried hard, so very hard, only to fail miserably? We all can.

None of us are perfect. We all have bad days. Some of us have bad years. The president has had four of them. That doesn’t make him a monster, an alcoholic, or an anti-Semite. I have been assured he doesn’t hate white people. There is no evidence he killed those kittens. He’s simply a misunderstood man, trying hard to cope with the world. Sometimes we get in over our heads. That is not a sin. The sin is in not helping those in trouble understand their situation.

I urge all Americans to come together and support those who love Barack, so that he can get the help he needs. Love is what the president needs at this time, the love of his family, and the best wishes of the American people. And I promise, as president, I will ask congress to establish a fund to help all First Families cope with the trauma of physical and mental abuse that alcohol and drug addiction bring.

Thank you Mr President for four years of service to your country. We will not forget you.

God bless America,

- Mitt Romney

Every time the Obamaniacs roll out an attack, they are shot down by reality.

They are like terrorist “work accidents”. Every time they try to set a little communications IED for Romney, it ends up blowing up in their face.

The reason is very simple. In the past, someone like Rosen could trot out her “she never worked a day in her life” moment and there would have been zero blowback. There was no twitter, there was no facebook, etc. If there was any backtalk over that, the only exposure the people would get to it would be the exposure that the media allowed them to get. In the meantime they would be massaging, spinning, refining the message to take the edge off.

They can’t do that anymore. They are still fighting the last war, the last campaign, they are still stuck in 2008. Things are different now. They can’t control the message. They have absolutely relied on that in the past.

Let freedom ring!

HA threads seem to be overly dominated now by angry, rude posters who don’t seem very interested in having a civil conversation about how to advance conservative causes and principles. Too many of the conversations on HA have devolved into a cesspool of sniping by name-callers and back-biters who are either liberal/progressive trolls masquerading as conservatives or conservatives who have decided to become like the enemies of conservatism. When I first began reading and posting on HA a few years ago, I actually enjoyed being here. I don’t anymore. Maybe the moderators need to reconsider what they think a “conservative blog” should actually be and limit participants to those who a capable of carrying on a dialog that is worthy of the conservative brand. That means that the only chance Obama has is to convince enough people that Mitt is not worthy to be POTUS. I say that will never happen and that is why Mitt will win easily.

MJBrutus on April 18, 2012 at 5:29 PM

No, it’s Mitt’s job to convince voters to vote for him. Who has more leeway to play with right off the top, Romney or Obama? Obama’s probably going to start with 47% right off the bat when the election rolls around. Romney won’t. “Win easily”? LOL

The election may not be about dogs but this news cycle is and I haven’t laughed so hard in eons. Here’s ACE’s poetry competition, most of it about dogs. My personal fave is the homage to Robert Frost’s fire and ice (#163)…

Hit Mitt on Women? Well, Mrs. Romney and his Lt. Gov. dispelled that
Hit Mitt on Wall St? Goldman ran obies admin
Hit Mitt on Corp taxes ? GE basically had an office in Obie’s WH
Hit Mitt on HC for poor ? Mitt in Mass. HC plan shows compassion
Hit Mitt on transparency ? oh never mind about that anymore
Hit Mitt on Tax rates ? Not anymore 20% obie- and lets look at Charitable giving while were at it.

FlaMurph on April 18, 2012 at 5:26 PM

Those defenses may work for you. But they don’t work on non-Republicans. They still believe there’s a war on women because of those stupid transvag ultrasounds. They don’t believe Goldman ran the Obama administration, they see Romney as more of Wall Street than Obama. Same with Corp taxes. Mitt’s mandate will absolve Obama of his HC mandate, because SCOTUS is going to throw the whole thing out. And yes, they’ll still argue for the Buffett rule tax and point at Mitt’s Millions and 15% tax rate as justification. Just because you don’t believe it doesn’t mean other people won’t.

Given what I’ve read from you, I don’t credit you with the character to make good on your loss. I stand by what I say and you want, you can make a note of it and give me a big “I told you so” if I’m wrong. That won’t happen though.

MJBrutus on April 18, 2012 at 5:32 PM

I guess that’s all I’m going to get. But the “no character” crack is beneath you.

I said it and you can write it down. All Mitt needs to do is to continue keep the election about Obama and continue to offer an alternative vision that is acceptable. PBHO had done the hard part, which is to make people want someone else in office.

I don’t think that’s likely either. The last few elections have been extremely tight and I don’t see that changing.

alwaysfiredup on April 18, 2012 at 5:36 PM

I would love to think that the American people are smart enough to make every election about real issues, but they’re not.

Romney is going to have to jump down into the mud with Obama and Axelrod, and so far, I’m encouraged. McCain would have died his campaign brought up Obama’s penchant for Dog Jerky.

Last guys finish last and it SEEMS like Romney understands what he’s up against.

jimver on April 18, 2012 at 5:38 PM

The left is trying to whip it up, but it’s going nowhere. Nobody wants to talk about anyone’s religion.

Queen0fCups on April 18, 2012 at 5:20 PM

I agree with you to a point. The Left hates Mormons. It doesn’t matter that Harry Reid is a Mormon. They will savage Romney for his Mormonism all day long and Reid will not say a word. It is OK when the Left calls Sarah Palin a c*nt, but call Ms Fluke a “slut” and the world comes to an end. Same principle at work here.

I’m an atheist so I don’t have a dog (no pun intended) in the religion wars, but make no mistake: The Left is itching to go after Mormons. It’s payback time for Prop 8. Obviously, they can’t go after blacks and Hispanics, who also overwhelmingly voted against SSM in California.

I agree that most people do not care and believe that the Left runs the risk of a massive backlash, but they will not be able to help themselves.

..well, I was thinking that Newter musta had something to do with this. I’m loving the fact that, if Romney’s nascent success continues, everyone will want to join in and beat Obama like a rented pinata. Why, it’ll be like one of those dean Martin roasts except without the conviviality.

By the way matt8787 is right: McCain wanted to get nominated; Romney wants to win. Don’t ya just love the image of Romney camping out in one of those flea bag Motel 6s? “I’ll leave the light on for ya.”

MJBrutus on April 18, 2012 at 5:36 PM

People don’t want someone else in office. We want someone else in office. We are’t the general voting public. The general voting public like Obama and don’t like Romney. Obama has much better favorabilities than Bush did and you can’t count on the anti-vote to swing this election. It’s just not there.
