Romney: The media “vast left-wing conspiracy” will attack me at every turn

posted at 1:21 pm on April 18, 2012 by Tina Korbe

In an interview with Breitbart.com’s Larry O’Connor, presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney adopted a proven strategy to appeal to a conservative audience: He attacked the mainstream media.

It didn’t sound like a gimmick, though. It sounded as though a single week with the media in general election mode has sobered Mitt Romney into the recognition that the MSM really will do what it can to forward Barack Obama’s reelection effort and thwart Romney’s effort to unseat him.

It wasn’t so long ago that Mitt Romney was implying it is somehow intellectually lazy to attack the MSM — but this is what he had to say in the interview with O’Connor:

“There will be an effort by the quote vast left-wing conspiracy to work together to put out their message and to attack me,” Romney said in an interview with Breitbart.com. “They’re going to do everything they can to divert from the issue people care about, which is a growing economy that creates more jobs and rising incomes. That’s what people care about.” …

“If people are bending or breaking the law then we’re going to have to focus on that and do something about that,” Romney responded. “I don’t know how much is related to that, or how much is just that many in the media are inclined to do the president’s bidding, and I know that’s an uphill battle we fight generally.”

If the recent uproar over whether Romney or Obama treats dogs better is any indication, Romney is absolutely right. No issue will be dismissed as too small to serve as a worthy distraction — and, while I stand by what I wrote yesterday, which is that even the distractions teach us something about the candidates and ourselves, I also think Romney is right to remain focused on the economy. It’s largely why Republicans ultimately nominated him and also the issue most likely to sway independents.

So, after several months in the primary season of posing as a Rick Santorum & Newt Gingrich loving “true conservative,” a series of bad polls for Barack Obama now has “angryed”

1.) Shrieking about his hatred for the military
2.) Declaring that the mainstream media isn’t liberal at all, and referring to those who think so as conservative tools
3.) Dismissing the midwest as “flyover country” (classic liberal derision.)

So: IS THERE A SINGLE PERSON WHO STILL THINKS HE IS A CONSERVATIVE?

I guess what galls me the most is how he was allowed by the moderators to stir up such dissent and anger through constant post-bombing throughout the primary campaign. I have no doubt that he hardened the attitudes of at least a few ABR people in here. And yet many of us could see he was a Moby all along.

I consider this to be a failure of Ed and Allah’s in terms of policing the comments as much as it is angryed’s fault. Trolls are a fact of life. Their goal IS to penetrate online communities of interest and sow dissension. But it is also the responsibility of the moderators to weed them out.

Obama Romney 2012: 4 More Years of The Same!

CoolCzech on April 18, 2012 at 2:42 PM

Sorry but I do not want the same. I want a return to the values the Republican Party used to have before Communist Progressives like McCain and Romney took over the party.

IMHO a vote for Mitt or Obama is basically the same. Romney will most likely institute Socialized Medicine just like Obama after the SCTOUS rules Obama Care unconstitutional or he will mandate Romney Care in each State. This is the most important issue and they are the same.

Romney feels the Government is the answer to every question just like Obama.

Romney and Obama prefer to lie rather than tell the truth in their campaigning so do not believe a word either state. Do believe in their actions and they are nearly identical.

It was brilliant of Mitt to use their own words against them more truthfully than Hillary could ever be. I think this is a signal of his coming into stride. People don’t get labeled “turnaround artists” for nothing.

As far as the vast left wing conspiracy. I think they are more vapid than vast. But they are persistent. They are trying to use Birthers against Mitt AND Rubio. Could you imagine if Republicans targeted Obama and Biden for, hmmm let’s say CORRUPTION?

We need to meet them and beat them at their own game. People say it will be a close election. I say not close at all if we do our part.

If the GOP and their media outlets are going to ban anybody who doesn’t drink the Romney Koolaid as trolls before the primary is even over then that would be most unfortunate. Isn’t it all of you “moderates”, (who are really on the far right), that used to say Republicans needed a big tent? Now you guys want to ban your opposition and you haven’t even won anything yet?

It’s just another example of the authoritarianism of the Romney people.

FloatingRock on April 18, 2012 at 3:49 PM

That was just about pitch-perfect.

A knowing, tongue-in-cheek nod to the silliness of Hillary’s old “vast-right-wing conspiracy” quote.

A calm acceptance of the fact of media bias against anything and anyone who espouses conservative thinking.

Romney is no McCain.

He has paid attention to how things work and obviously knows how to run a campaign. it is showing more and more that he is ready to take on Obama’s machine.

Won’t be easy, but he and his campaign are up for it.

Democrats don’t cheerlead for the military like you do.
It’s hypocritical for you to give saint status to anyone who “served their country” yet you nominate a man who didn’t and had 5 sons who didn’t.

You really can’t see that?

angryed on April 18, 2012 at 2:26 PM

Hypocrisy doesn’t mean what you think it means. Praising the military on the one hand & nominating a man who hasn’t served in the military are two separate issues.

However, what hypocrisy actually is is for the Dems. (like you) who — by your own admission — don’t “cheerlead” the military so, according to your argument, it’s OK for them to nominate candidates who haven’t served, to try to make an issue of a GOP nominee not having served in the military.

MYOB & get go back to the borg for a better argument.

I have reservations about some of his past stances too, his pledge to repeal Obamacare is vital to me.. but we have to face certain realities.

Mitt is right, there is a left wing media conspiracy to bring him down, we all know it. God knows we’ve seen it used agaionst everyone else already.. and letting Obama get away with using it again, just out of spite against Mitt.. well, we’re more grown up than that.

They will mock him for saying this… when at the time, Hillary made her laughable assertion.. they all wrung their hands and whined about how terrible that vast right wing was… Hell… we all know that we run the MSM right?… oh wait.. we don’t?..

yeah, she was high comedy..

I don’t know, now that Republicans are openly defending crony capitalism and have totally abandoned tea party principles I’m having second thoughts about the OWS myself, I have to admit. While they obviously had a Marxist perspective that I’ll never agree with, they were right at least that crony capitalism is a disease that has done tremendous harm to our economy. America would be much better off if the corrupt banks that crawled in bed with our corrupt government had gone bankrupt, if not to prison, instead of being bailed out and thus their corrupting influence on our government continues.

I also think Romney is right to remain focused on the economy

I don’t.

Is that REALLY his number one priority? Because – it SHOULD NOT be.

His number one priority should be to cut government and reform entitlements – that should be minute one, day one.

Why? Because we can’t go on for four more years unless we get a balanced budget and start paying down some of this debt. Priority 1 – cut, cap, balance.

Priority 2 – once you’ve done the above … THEN you can focus on the economy.

And – WE ALL KNOW – what Establishment Republicans mean when they say “fix the economy”. They mean tax cuts. They mean deregulation for big businesses … both are things I fully support and, inasfar as they can be accomplished alongside entitlement reform – I’m all for it.

But if Willard McDole was a SERIOUS person – he’d tell people this. “Hey, this nation is about to hit the rocks – so before I address other issues – I HAVE TO turn this rudder to prevent this ship from running aground!”

He may as well do it right away – entitlement reform and government cuts WILL BE THE MOST UNPOPULAR THING HE’LL EVER DO AS POTUS – so he may as well take the hit right up front and he’s got four years before his reelection campaign to recover from it.

But … WILLARD MCDOLE WON’T DO THIS – he hasn’t the balls. He’ll work the “fringes” but he won’t do a damn thing that will cost him a point in favorability.

People KNOW this – which is why he has a snowball’s chance in hell of getting elected.

Thankfully, we now get to see who is reasonable.

The people here who didn’t like Mitt Romney had good, substanstial, and honest reasons.

But now, the primary race is all but over and Mitt is going to be our nominee.

The reasonable ABR’s still have reservations (some serious ones), but they are wise enough to see that the ultimate goal of this election is to send Obama packing.

I think Romney will govern Conservatively.
Some think that he won’t govern conservatively enough for their tastes.

But, even if he is not their first choice, the reasonable folks here will vote for Romney (some might even grow to truly support him as we move along into the general… stranger things have happened). ;-)

When people like angryed spout liberal/progressive dogma and talking points, they are not having an honest conversation with fellow conservatives. They are liberal trolls through and through. That said, maybe it’s time for the genuinely conservative ABR crowd to give it a rest and face the fact that the GOP nomination process is effectively over. It’s time to stop the Romney bashing and to either unite behind the nominee or quietly stand on the sidelines. Many of you don’t like Romney. I get that. BUT, going on and on Ad nauseum about what you think is wrong with Romney isn’t helpful to anyone. If you don’t want to support Romney and believe that he is no different than Obama, then you shouldn’t be adverse to quietly allowing those of us who disagree to do our very best to replace Obama with Romney. If the ABR crowd is right and Romney really turns out to be no different than Obama, there is no down side to electing him and letting him show us who he really is as President. If Romney is more of the same, he will continue to steer the country further down the path to bigger and more intrusive government much as Obama is doing right now. However, he may actually surprise the ABR crowd and govern as a reasonable conservative. That would certainly be a pleasant outcome for all of us. If not, Americans may then be ready for a President and a Congress who are actually willing to deliver smaller, less intrusive government and more individual freedom.

Perhaps you have the auto bailouts a bit confused with the bank bailouts. Banks were given an ultimatum by Hank Paulson… they were forced to take TARP or he would see to it they would be destroyed. In case you’ve forgotten your Lehman/Merrill history, I’ll give you a refresher.

Paulson was not going to go in front of the American public two Mondays in a row and talk about both of these guys failing. That’s where the arranged marriage between Merrill and BofA was made… as well as $45bb of TARP money. Are you aware that BofA paid the Treasury back just about $50bb? Ironically, TARP is going to be money the Treasury will actually not lose money on. And who got shafted here? BofA did. John Thain was dancing with Unicorns and Skittles while Merrill was losing $15bb a month and hiding it from plain sight of the due diligence people. When BofA tried to protest the arranged marriage by invoking the Material Adverse Change clause, Paulson threatened to dismantle BofA, starting with the Board. Before you start crucifying banks, maybe best to look at the deals given to the auto industry first.

It’s time to stop the Romney bashing and to either unite behind the nominee or quietly stand on the sidelines.

Not at all. Primary ain’t over yet. Not even close.

alwaysfiredup on April 18, 2012 at 4:35 PM

Um, does the word “delegates” mean anything to you? The only echo I hear is you losers whining and gnashing your teeth…

lovingmyUSA on April 18, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Romney hasn’t bought the nomination yet, he’s only about halfway there the last I heard. Just because Rupert Murdoch says it’s over doesn’t mean it’s over.

FloatingRock on April 18, 2012 at 4:35 PM

Well, Mr. Romney, it doesn’t bother me so much for them to attack you. In fact, I think you deserve it. Are you trying to get sympathetic votes from conservatives for having to endure the same tactics you so enthusiastically pulled on your fellow Repub’s? Oh, but that wasn’t you, was it? That was your totally independent super-PAC!

gepaza on April 18, 2012 at 1:34 PM

Really? You are going to go with that meme? If the other candidates couldnt make it out of the fire of a primary fight, how the hell do you think they would be able to stand up to Obowma?

lovingmyUSA on April 18, 2012 at 1:36 PM

You are guilty of the crime of writing while ignorant (the ignorance is obviously due to the fact that you either cannot read or cannot comprehend what you do read) The meme, since you want to use that oft-misused word, has nothing to do with other candidates and everything to do with your precious Mittens being more than willing to use scorched earth tactics on his fellow Repubs, but whining like a baby when he knows the tables will be turned on him. Your Precious will fold up worse than McCain did in 2008.

gepaza on April 18, 2012 at 4:36 PM

HondaV65 on April 18, 2012 at 4:32 PM

They don’t get it. They look at it as us vs them, my team vs your team. Talk radio has brainwashed them into thinking Republigan good, Democrat bad. The notion that a Republican can be just as bad as a Democrat is alien to them.

Romney has already flip flopped on immigration and has said he is open to amnesty. Not a peep from the Mittbots. Yet when Perry and Gingrich said essentially the same thing the bots went apeshit over it.

angryed on April 18, 2012 at 4:38 PM

I just lost a lot of respect for Romney. Crying about some imaginary left wing conspiracy. He sounds just as bad as Hilary Clinton claiming a vast right wing conspiracy was out to get her and Bill. MSM carried a lot of water for the Bush administration as well as the Obama. It’s the nature of the bully pulpit.

He has a glass jaw and will whine endlessly when Obama manages to land a punch. that’s what he did throughout the primary. He won because he could outspend his opponents 5- to 10-times as much, and he will not have that advantage in the general election. These are facts.

alwaysfiredup on April 18, 2012 at 4:41 PM

Get real, it’s no lie, the mandate is the mandate no matter what level of government it is applied to. Would you support Obama if he were the Republican nominee? I think a lot of R-team people would, but not me. I oppose Obama on principle for the same reasons I oppose Romney. They are both big-gov, authoritarian statists. They are both a threat to our freedom and liberty and embrace policies that are detrimental to young people and the future of the nation.

FloatingRock on April 18, 2012 at 4:18 PM

Here I thought libertarian-sorts fashioned themselves among the most realistic of us. The upcoming presidential election will be won by either Mitt Romney or Barack Obama. Romney would be a better president than Obama so I’ve reconciled myself to supporting Romney. Party label doesn’t factor in at all. Wishing in the face of reality (i.e.: it’s Romney or Obama) is childish and I haven’t been a child for a while now.

You are a troll. I have tried to engage you politely and asked you to state your position. You ignore the question and continue with shaking your fist at the sky. You also repeatedly misrepresent words to build strawmen, which I caught you on yesterday and you neglected to answer to.

I will repeat my post for you to actually answer:

Alright. What’s your plan? If Romney is the nominee, who should we vote for? If Obama wins what should we do – what’s the plan to deal with Obama?

I’m serious. If you want any shred of credibility and become no more than L4L and eventually get banned for trolling, speak up.

With every post you seem to be losing more and more of your mind. Convince us that your way is the better way. Outline the plan of how not voting for the R (Romney) is going to get us ahead in the short and long term.

I’m taking the premise that you’d vote for anyone NOT Romney, whoever that may be. I’d also like to know who is left (or viable) that you think should be the nominee.

kim roy on April 18, 2012 at 3:03 PM

If you don’t want to be considered a troll who has absolutely nothing to offer, then you might want to consider answering a few of these questions or at least stating your position. Giving a rote answer of Romney = Obama is useless and is the equivalent of shaking your fist at the sky.

Rusty Allen on April 18, 2012 at 4:50 PM

VietVet_Dave on April 18, 2012 at 4:35 PM

No, I’m not confused. What happened was that our crony government got in bed with crony banks and were having an orgy with Freddi and Fanni, and then when their ponzy scheme came crashing down, instead of the bad guys going broke and/or to prison, they bailed themselves out with money confiscated from the American people.

So where once all of those corrupt banks would have gone bankrupt and ceased their corrupting influence on our government, thanks to the crony capitalist arrangement, the corrupt banks are still around, at the top, pulling far too many strings.

The bad banks took the taxpayer money and bought a lot of good banks. Thanks to the crony-capitalists running the D and R parties, the bad guys one and the good guys lost. If any banks should be influencing our government today, it should be the good banks that weren’t involved in the corruption.

America would be so much better off if the same old crooks weren’t still running the show!

OK, let’s play that out and give all Santorum’s delegates to Newt. How many more delegates is Newt going to get? What’s the state of his campaign organization? How much cash does he have on-hand? How much debt is he carrying? PPP polled the three-way contest and Mitt leads Newt 54-24 and is cruising to a giant delegate haul in NY, PA, RI, DE and CT next Tuesday which isn’t going to do a thing to slow him down.

All things being equal then, yes, if you combined their delegate totals then it might still be a race but things are not equal.
