Romney: The media “vast left-wing conspiracy” will attack me at every turn

posted at 1:21 pm on April 18, 2012 by Tina Korbe

In an interview with Breitbart.com’s Larry O’Connor, presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney adopted a proven strategy to appeal to a conservative audience: He attacked the mainstream media.

It didn’t sound like a gimmick, though. It sounded as though a single week with the media in general election mode has sobered Mitt Romney into the recognition that the MSM really will do what it can to forward Barack Obama’s reelection effort and thwart Romney’s effort to unseat him.

It wasn’t so long ago that Mitt Romney was implying it is somehow intellectually lazy to attack the MSM — but this is what he had to say in the interview with O’Connor:

“There will be an effort by the quote vast left-wing conspiracy to work together to put out their message and to attack me,” Romney said in an interview with Breitbart.com. “They’re going to do everything they can to divert from the issue people care about, which is a growing economy that creates more jobs and rising incomes. That’s what people care about.” …

“If people are bending or breaking the law then we’re going to have to focus on that and do something about that,” Romney responded. “I don’t know how much is related to that, or how much is just that many in the media are inclined to do the president’s bidding, and I know that’s an uphill battle we fight generally.”

If the recent uproar over whether Romney or Obama treats dogs better is any indication, Romney is absolutely right. No issue will be dismissed as too small to serve as a worthy distraction — and, while I stand by what I wrote yesterday, which is that even the distractions teach us something about the candidates and ourselves, I also think Romney is right to remain focused on the economy. It’s largely why Republicans ultimately nominated him and also the issue most likely to sway independents.

Totally understand, but in a way, he is just preaching to the choir.

Romney just needs to keep hitting him hard on his track record and the economy. Little things like the dog story and the other social issues that they’ll bring up are fun, but only the side show.

Notice that in the actual interview he said “vast left wing conspiracy” with a chuckle as if playing off of Hillary Clinton’s “vast right wing conspiracy” comment of years gone by. He was actually being facetious with the “conspiracy” comment.

If you listen to the clip, Romney didn’t lash out like Newt does. He simply stated his expectation in a sober tone as TK points out. He knows the Democrat/media complex will do anything and everything it can to reelect Obama. Everyone knows this. If he tried to claim otherwise or even pass it off as no big deal, we’d all be trashing him over it. I’ll repeat what I said in the QOTD thread yesterday. Romney gets it. He may not be the ideal conservative candidate, but he ain’t a chump like McCain or Dole.

How has he focused on the economy? Romney is wise in firing pre-emptive strikes against the media. McCain refused to fire back or let Palin do so in 2008.

Evan Thomas of Newsweek admitted that media bias was responsible for up to 15% of the Kerry-Edwards vote total in 2004.

McCain’s experience shows that being nice does not pay.

Still, at this point, I’ll give him a “good solid B+” for effort. In the future, he needs to come up with some harder attacks on the media for their cheerleading of Obama. I think he needs to drive home how the media is protecting Obama and not telling the public how much Obama is messing up.

I guess you haven’t gotten to ‘sample sizes’ yet. A survey of 300 members of a small segment of the population is indeed statistically relevant.

Also, I guess you chose not to comment on this little tidbit included in the study. Self-identified employees of Fox News didn’t contribute a single dollar to Republicans while contributing over $1,280 to Democrats.

To the larger point – if you believe that self-identified journalists donating to Democrats over Republicans at a rate of 100:1 is invalid because they only polled 300 journalists, do you actually believe the media is anywhere near evenly split, or is the disparity more like 50:1?

Bless.

I’m glad there are folks sufficiently fluent in RINO-speake to understand why co-opting (and thus legitimating) Clinton-speake is politically astute.

Terp Mole on April 18, 2012 at 1:55 PM

Listen to the interview. He did the exact opposite of what you think he did. He used the Clintonian expression in a bantering tone.

Has Romney said Palin “needs to quit whining” or anything?

No, but deranged Mittwits like you have, daily.

..pretty sick stuff. Last couple of weeks it seems like this jerk has become a certifiable looney tunes and beyond tedious. I will be at bowl-side with the brush to make sure any — ahem — left over fragments get flushed as well.

President Puppy Chow no likey the turn of events?

First this war on women………..Hey if Obama doesn’t defend the women against the widely reported predatory nature of the advance team does that mean he takes the side of the oppressor males against working class women?

and now this Dog story blowing up on him? Would someone in the press PLEASE ask him what else he has eaten? I know what America has been forced to eat the last three and a half years.

Someone wondered earlier if this was really what happened in Columbia. I find it very hard to imagine that trained professionals would be doing this kind of thing with whores of all people in a foreign nation. I guess that’s just the Possum Holler mindset I has. I don’t believe the press reports of this kind of behavior from these guys.

How many days until V-A Day, November 6th?

ugh.

angryed … you’ve really almost became unhinged. I dislike Rombo a great deal and generally have saw your point of view, but the comments about the media is ridiculous.

They only swoon about the Dow #’s because it can help/hurt Obama’s reelection prospects. If you’ve resorted to trying to argue that the media is even just slightly impartial, you’re off the rails.

Unreal.

Yes in 2004 this report from CNN intended to help Obama.

A strong quarterly earnings report from Swedish telecom equipment maker LM Ericsson boosted the telecom sector Friday, helping to push technology shares to a stronger close.

According to preliminary reports, the Nasdaq composite gained 44.45 to 2,064.01. The Amex technology index edged 14.20 higher to 731.96, while the Philadelphia semiconductor index rose 23.68 to 519.41.

Mitt is so weak.

Mitt agrees with the MSM on most things in reality.

Never forget that his son Matt said “Obama is doing a great job in Hawaii as Mitts spokesman. He continued as spokesman and never walked this back.

Mitt and Obama are both Communist Progressives.

Obama will win there is no real reason to vote for Mitt.

Actually what Thomas said, he said before the election had taken place. He predicted that the media bias would give Thurston and Silk Pony an additional 10-15% of the votes.

He was right.

The US govt takes 18 year old dimwits, gives them a gun and says go kill brown people. Can’t really blame them for having a F**K YEAH! moment afterwards.

angryed on April 18, 2012 at 10:57 AM

angryed really has lost it.

Bad enough that he/she could not remember to stick with the “I am a conservative who hates Romney for being too liberal” act.

angryed also forgot that his/her Dear Leader is now POTUS, and for progressives like angryed the war in Afghanistan is now a Just Cause, US soldiers heroes, and 0bama’s Greatest Accomplishment the killing of bin Laden.

Bin Laden, whom progressives like angryed consider a “brown person”.

Killed by Navy SEALS, who enlisted as “18 year old dimwits”.

angryed got confused again, thought it was still 2007, and essentially labelled his hero 0bama a white supremacist killer. You know, because 0bama’s greatest feat, according to his supporters, was killing bin Laden with US Navy SEALs.

You have to keep your story straight, angryed.

MidniteRambler on April 18, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Romney is wise in firing pre-emptive strikes against the media. McCain refused to fire back or let Palin do so in 2008.

McCain believed that he would be elected because he bought the nonsense that the people are tired of “politics as usual” and want a candidate who stays “positive” and “above the fray.”

That comes from two sources: People telling pollsters what they think makes them sound better, and media sources shilling for the Democrats.

People vote for candidates who go on the attack and campaigning against your opponent, or so called “negative campaigning”, works. Anyone who doubts that will never get elected.
