Hey, how about administration officials pay their fair share of taxes?

posted at 2:31 pm on April 18, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Over at our sister site, Townhall.com, Carol Platt Liebau and Kevin Glass issue a timely reminder. At the same time that the president shrilly demands passage of a rule to force millionaires to “pay their fair share” of taxes (passage the Senate didn’t deliver), administration officials and federal workers owe an astonishing amount in back taxes.

Some 36 members of Obama’s executive staff owe more than $800,000 in back taxes, while federal workers owe more than $3.4 billion in unpaid taxes, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Granted, we can’t wait for perfect compliance to reform the tax code, just as we can’t wait for the elimination of every instance of waste, fraud and abuse before we reform entitlement programs. The noncompliance of so many members of the Obama administration and the federal government, though, might reveal yet another reason why they target “the rich” for tax increases. Because they don’t pay their own taxes, they don’t trust others to pay their fair share without special enforcement, either. “The rich” — as such a small portion of the population — are easy to monitor and easy to milk. Few millionaires would take the risk of fudging their tax returns — especially since the IRS is, in fact, auditing more millionaires these days.

Meanwhile, the Buffett Rule isn’t even the most disastrous tax the Obama administration has proposed of late. John Ransom calls attention to the many pitfalls of a global minimum tax, which Joe Biden recently touted:

A global minimum tax is a tax on all profits made by nominally US companies that operate overseas. They operate overseas for various reasons, but one big reason is because corporate taxes are higher in the US than overseas. And to fix high corporate taxes in the US, the Obama administration proposes even HIGHER TAXES on corporations. …

Not content to tax the rich here in the United States, Democrats are so hungry for welfare revenues that they now want to tax all revenue, everywhere, ignoring international borders, international waters and universal common sense.

And guess who is gonna pay the tax? When they toll the bell “rich” during this campaign, understand that that bell tolls for thee.

Because, while the “rich” may be someone across town in the US, the “rich” in Obama’s global sense, isyou. This is a tax that will fall most heavily on the poor and middle income earners.

The truth is, most of the tax increases the president has proposed will eventually hit the middle class, thanks to the phenomenon of trickle-down taxation. Grover Norquist thinks the American people won’t fall for tax-the-rich rhetoric again because they know eventually, in the eyes of the government, everybody will be considered “rich.” I hope he’s right — but the president’s opportunistic emphasis on the Buffett Rule during an election year suggests the president thinks his rhetoric will work.

The tax battle is not about “paying a fair share.” If it were, Obama would direct the injunction to pay up directly at the tax evaders in his administration. It is and always has been about wealth redistribution and centralization of power.

Not to mention Charlie Rangle and others. On a related note Massachusetts allows residents to pay a higher tax rate. Recently Granny Warren was asked if she opted to pay the higher rate, considering her incredible salary. She refused to answer the question.

In fact, it’s reported that, oh heck here it is:

According to the DOR, as of yesterday 2.78 million Massachusetts residents had filed 2011 tax returns, and exactly 773 opted to pay at the higher rate

I think the “fair share” tax rate for all federal office holders and their political appointees while we are BOTH running a deficit AND operating without A BUDGET is 100%.

As in none of them should be getting paychecks.

wildcat72 on April 18, 2012 at 2:53 PM

You have to admit that Obama’s got a strong argument for needing the money/raising taxes….via Drudge/CNS News:

At the close of business on Jan. 20, 2009, the day Obama was inaugurated, the federal government’s debt was $10,626,877,048,913.08, according to the U.S. Treasury. By the close of business on April 16, 2012—as many Americans were working to finalize their 2011 tax returns to meet an April 17 filing deadline—the debt had reached $15,654,638,525,397.64.

The $5,027,761,476,484.56 in additional debt that the U.S. government has taken on during the 39 months that Obama has been president is more debt than the federal government accumulated in the first 219 years of the Republic.

Now this is what I’d call “speculating”!!!

Looks like the Reverend Al is resisting as much as he can:

http://freebeacon.com/more-money-more-problems/

Sharpton, who has endorsed President Barack Obama’s calls for taxing the rich, has his own tax issues. He owed the IRS $2.6 million in income taxes in December 2011, as well as almost $900,000 in New York state taxes.

Sharpton financed his presidential run, in part, by borrowing large sums of money from his struggling nonprofit.

Sharpton borrowed more than $181,000 from NAN—money that is now supposed to be refunded. Sharpton also loaned $145,000 to the campaign to finance a fundraising push.

His largest creditor is the federal government; the campaign owes the Federal Elections Commission and the U.S. Treasury Department more than $225,000.

The democrats never worry about their open raging hypocrisy..

They know the MSM will not inform the general public,.. will completely ignore it.. and their own base could care less.. the only rule breaking which offends lefty’s is when one of ours does it. Obama could bring out the orginal Constitution on the White House lawn and light it.. and his base would yawn, maybe even applaud.. they hate that document for holding up their rush to the Happyland Unicorn Express. I’d love to see the liberal rewrite of the Constitution, it’d be great for laughs, till you get to the 1st Amendment as written by them,..

The right to free speech shall not be infringed, for progressive thought, all others need apply to the newly created Ministry of Proper Thinking for prior written permission to speak in public..

the 2nd?…..

what second?….

it’ll go down hill from there.

How is this anything new or unique somehow to the Obambi regime?

This has been one of many royal screwings of the American Citizen by both parties and the bureaucracy both support for well over 100 years now.

If Romney gets elected, and if the Republicans can take Congress, you really think these things are going to be set right?

Please.

No, we’ll turn a blind eye as long as the Communists are driven back underground for a term or two, and especially if the economic situation gets better. Most Conservatives paid no attention over the decades as the bureaucracy was getting increasingly more powerful. As long as we were making money, we didn’t care what the hell they were doing in DC or our various state capitols.

We need to do a better job of policing our own, because we support these guys and they forget about us when they’re up there partying away and drinking cocktails and golfing with lobbyists.

Dr. ZhivBlago on April 18, 2012 at 11:18 PM

It’s interesting that the Buffet rule will bring in just a bit more than what our public employees owe in unpaid taxes. Add in what Buffet has not paid and you’re right about at parity. Maybe it is time to use more serious persuasion to get these people to pay up. For the government employees simply don’t pay them at all until they’ve reached parity.
