Boehner: The president checked out last Labor Day

posted at 4:51 pm on April 18, 2012 by Tina Korbe

In a pre-recorded interview for CBS’ “This Morning,” House Speaker John Boehner called out the president for his incessant campaigning and confirmed that the chief occupant of the White House has lately made no effort whatsoever to work with Congress on any of the key issues that face the country.

Boehner particularly noted the peculiarity of the president’s pivot from an all-consuming focus last summer on arriving at a “Grand Bargain” on the debt and deficit to his present focus on a tax measure that would barely affect the deficit at all.

“I sat for months with the president. He wanted revenue,” said Boehner. “I said, ‘Mr. President, I’ll put revenue on the table that we can achieve out of fixing our tax code. But the only way I’ll do it is if you’re willing to have real, fundamental reform of our entitlement programs.’ And the fact is we have an agreement,” the Speaker said.

“And then two days later, the president decided he wanted $400 billion of more revenue, which was, in effect, a $400 billion tax increase.

“He lost his courage,” Boehner said.

He added that he was “not optimistic” about reaching a new agreement with the president. “The president checked out last Labor Day. All he’s done is campaign full time for the last six months. He’s not been engaged in the legislative process at all. There have been no efforts at trying to work with Democrats and Republicans to address this issue at all. And it’s — it’s shameful.”

In essence, Boehner is saying that the president is not doing his job. It’s not that he’s doing it poorly — it’s that he’s not doing it at all. Even liberals have noted that the president has backed away from hard fights. In her column this week, Ruth Marcus points out that the president — by focusing so much on his reelection and separating the Buffett Rule from broader tax reform proposals — is making Democrats’ job more difficult down the road, when they will want to call for comprehensive tax increases.

It’s worth noting that the lack of ideas from Democrats on major issues doesn’t just suggest that their electoral strategy is to demonize whatever Republicans present. It’s also to obscure whatever their true tax and entitlement reform plans would be — presumably because their ideas wouldn’t be particularly palatable to the American public.

I just wish Boehner would talk like this all the time. Why does he allow the Democrat/media complex to perpetuate this BS narrative that Obama is some pragmatic centrist who really wants to work with the other side when even left-wing partisan hacks know it’s not true?

This is such a silly argument from Boner. Every president campaigns while in office. What’s Obama supposed to do, not travel, not give speeches, just lock himself inside the WH until after labor day?

Every politician is on the campaign trail 24/7/365. Someone should inform Mr. Boner of this recent (that is about 40 years old) phenomenon.

No. He simply lied to Boehner the first time around. Which shouldn’t surprise anybody, by now.

There was no “Grand Bargain”, in the President’s mind. Simply another of his phony “accommodations” designed to mislead the Congress and the public, while he continued down the road he’s been on from day one. Namely, massive government spending for “societal transformation”, paid for (only in part) by massive tax increases on everyone not part of his base on the far left.

The fact that Boehner thought he had a deal proves nothing. Except most probably that Boehner is as gullible as everyone else who thought they “had a deal”, with a President who has the mentality, and ethics, of a pyramid-racket grifter. Or maybe a three-card monte dealer.

I don’t think Mr. Boehner is stupid. But I do believe he is far too trusting of the man who will like go down in history as being not just stupider than Jimmy Carter, but also even less honest than Richard Nixon.

Compared to Obama, Bill Clinton looks like Calvin Coolidge. Who said at the end of his term that he considered his greatest accomplishment as President was getting the Federal Government to mind its own business, and not everybody else’s, while he was in the Oval Office.

Which is something Obama will never stand for, as long as he occupies that same room.

Let’s face it, the Democrats won, in 2006, with their “Culture of Corruption” theme. They got on message and the press latched on and voila huge election for them. In 2008, once again, the press was all for Obama and they helped him as much as they could. They did all of this with no effective message at all about what they would do if elected.

Finally, in 2010, they got their reward for it. The problem for them is they don’t realize why they lost in 2010 and feel they can do the same thing as 2006 (except put fear into the voters about what the Republicans will do if they get re-elected) and re-elect Obama. If it works, we’re not only in trouble, we’re stupid.

HA threads seem to be overly dominated now by angry, rude posters who don’t seem very interested in having a civil conversation about how to advance conservative causes and principles.

This is a legitimate gripe, but the problem is, we don’t have an internal agreement anymore on what those principles are. The two “sides” of the Republican Party agree with each other about as much as Democrats and Republicans do. The ONLY thing keeping the party from flying apart right now is fear of the Democrats.

Too many of the conversations on HA have devolved into a cesspool of sniping by name-callers and back-biters who are either liberal/progressive trolls masquerading as conservatives or conservatives who have decided to become like the enemies of conservatism.
NuclearPhysicist on April 18, 2012 at 5:17 PM

And then you go and blow up your premise. There has been an unfortunate trend by certain people to label any criticism or disagreement with the positions of certain presidential candidates as treason against the party. It’s unfortunate that angryed has gone over the edge and has just started trolling, but I suspect that at least part of the reason he did so was that it became impossible for him to post at all here without being attacked as a “secret liberal” or “DKos poster” by self-appointed loyalty officers when he’s been here for years.

What you see as damage (health care access for the poor, access to birth control for women, gay rights, protecting the environment, etc) is seen as a benefit to someone else. Just like when you saw Bush invading Iraq as a benefit and others saw it as damage.

The NY Times said they are biased to Republicans. That my friend is an oxymoron coming from the newspaper that has been totally controlled by the Democratic party since about the 1960′s.

Sometimes, when you have to put yourself through college and can’t get foreigner student loans and don’t have AA to help you get into Harvard, it taks longer to get through college.

You’re really quite elitist for someone who “claims” to be a conservative…

I ain’t bitin’.

Tell me you’re being sarcastic. It’s politics, not Sunday tea with the ladies. It’s an all out war every day. The guy who blinks first loses.

It’s also to obscure whatever their true tax and entitlement reform plans would be — presumably because their ideas wouldn’t be particularly palatable to the American public.

That’s the scariest part. That’s why we can’t have anyone staying home because Romney got the nomination. I don’t think we want to find out what Obama’s plan is.

I hear ya, maybe it’s because he’s a congressman, I don’t know. I’m still pretty much an ABR voter at this point, but Rombo is showing a little zest and I may come around if he keeps it up. I may even throw a little ching his way, anything to keep PBHO the Destroyer from warming that seat any longer.

Quite the contrary. Voter ID should be the law of the land in all 57 states. But thanks for ASSuming what I think.

Yeah, I realize it’s an uphill battle, but I think this campaign is much better positioned than the last one was. The reality is that Obama should not even be in the running. The media is as much of an opponent as Obama, perhaps more.

Is it too much to expect that he actually lead rather than focus on his own narrow political interests? If he’s actually interested in being a leader, he would confront these issues and doing so means sitting down with the party that controls the House. Are you trying to argue that the two sides have never negotiated on something important and reached an agreement?
