Video: Beckel did a bad, bad thing

posted at 8:41 am on April 17, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

I missed this when it happened, but it didn’t take long to catch up to it on Twitter afterward.  Bob Beckel got into an argument with former Tea Party activist Jennifer Stefano over the effectiveness of Head Start spending during a break on Sean Hannity’s Great American Panel and didn’t pay attention to the stage manager when the show went back on the air.  That’s one reason — but only one reason — why Beckel offered a great American epithet as viewers returned (NSFW, obviously):

Beckel at first refused to apologize — in fact, he refused to acknowledge that the show had gone back on the air for about a full minute.  After realization slowly dawned on Beckel, he finally offered a grudging apology, but then proceeded to blame Sean Hannity for not warning him that the show was coming back on the air.  Hannity, incredulous, says that he figured that Beckel would have had a clue when the director began counting backwards from five.

After all, that’s the typical “head start” that most television performers understand.

I’ve been in broadcasting for over eight years, and Beckel has at least that much experience.  Professionals don’t use that kind of language in the studio, and not just because one never really knows when the microphones are hot.  Controlling one’s speech is a discipline, a habit, and so is the use of F-bombs and other profanity.  Any bad habits one has will eventually come out on the air, and this is a prime example.  Hannity graciously insisted he would defend Beckel if Fox tried to fire him, but anyone this unprofessional — and ungracious — really should be reconsidered for their future on-air assignments.

Jennifer Stefano rips Beckel toward the end of the clip for making the argument personal, so be sure to watch it all the way through, but that’s not the end of Beckel’s embarrassment.  As Andrew Coulson reported over two years ago, even Barack Obama’s HHS agrees with Stefano that Head Start doesn’t work (via Derek Hunter):

What’s so damning is that this study used the best possible method to review the program: It looked at a nationally representative sample of 5,000 children who were randomly assigned to either the Head Start (“treatment”) group or to the non-Head Start (“control”) group.

Random assignment is the “gold standard” of medical and social-science research: It gives investigators confidence that the treatment and control groups are essentially identical in every respect except their access to Head Start. So if eventual test performances differ, we can be pretty sure that the difference was caused by the program. No previous study of Head Start used this approach on a nationally representative sample of children.

When the researchers gave both groups of students 44 different academic tests at the end of the first grade, only two seemed to show even marginally significant advantages for the Head Start group. And even those apparent advantages vanished after standard statistical controls were applied.

In fact, not a single one of the 114 tests administered to first graders — of academics, socio-emotional development, health care/health status and parenting practice — showed a reliable, statistically significant effect from participating in Head Start.

Some advocates of the program have acknowledged these dramatic results, but suggest that it’s not necessarily Head Start’s fault if its effects vanish during kindergarten and the first grade — perhaps our K-12 schools are to blame.

But that’s beside the point. Even if it’s true, it means that Head Start will be of no lasting value to children until we fix our elementary and secondary schools. Until then, money spent on Head Start will continue to be wasted.

Why did Beckel get personal, instead of sticking to facts and figures as Stefano advised?  Because he would lose on facts and figures.  All Beckel has is bluster and profanity.

As someone who gets tortured by the idiot liberals in my family at EVERY SINGLE HOLIDAY, I’ve had lots of experience with how they react when they cannot refute an argument.

They drop F-bombs and insult you.

Socialist views cannot be argued factually or logically the way conservatism can, it’s strictly emotional. Which is why they react this way.

Actually it’s evidence he SHOULD be fired. Even if he didn’t think he was on the air that kind of abuse aimed at other people, especially a woman is extremely uncouth. He must do this all the time, this happened to be the one time we got to see it.

He shouldn’t be fired for being a bed wetting libtard, but for being rude, obnoxious, and behaving unacceptably towards others.

wildcat72 on April 17, 2012 at 8:47 AM

Well said, Ed. It used to be that teachers taught our children to have a bias for facts and figures and that unless presented with facts and figures, they should listen to arguments with skepticism.

Now it’s just emotion and intentions. Thanks, Mr. Beckel, for the nice reveal.

He shouldn’t be fired for this. Suspended, maybe. Certainly pulled aside by management and told to never use that kind of language again on set, whether the cameras are rolling or not. But unless I’m mistaken, he hasn’t done this before, so slap him on the wrist(very very hard) and tell him never to do it again.

I don’t like many libs but I kinda like Bechel. On one of The Five programs I almost fainted in a segment on great Presidents he said “W” because of all the humanitarian AIDS work he did in Africa. He said W never gets credit for that and he should. There have been a couple of stunners.

rhombus on April 17, 2012 at 8:48 AM

Slightly OT, but why is Beckel the only down-the-line liberal on that show? Guilfoyle I think leans left on certain issues, but not all. The rest of the lineup is almost always Gutfeld, Bolling, Perino, and/or Tantaros, all ranging from center-right to hardcore conservative(at least fiscally).

Doughboy on April 17, 2012 at 8:51 AM

but then proceeded to blame Sean Hannity for not warning him that the show was coming back on the air. Hannity, incredulous, says that he figured that Beckel would have had a clue when the director began counting backwards from five.

I kind of like Beckel because he’s such a typical idiot liberal:

1. Wrong about everything
2. Cuss
3. Blame a conservative for the mess

Having formidable opposition around keeps everyone on their toes.

I can’t help but think with a GSA official taking the fifth and even refusing to say under oath whether he WORKS for the GSA – that a liberal saying “f” on TV is a nice diversion tactic.

Yep, probably reading too much into that, but where’s the GSA video?

Marcus on April 17, 2012 at 8:53 AM

Beckel is a bully and tries to use his size to intimidate women. I have lost respect for the women on The Five for tolerating Beckel’s bullying tactics.

huckleberryfriend on April 17, 2012 at 8:54 AM

Beckel represents the one thing I love about liberals. If you just let them talk, eventually they will tell you what they REALLY think. When liberals tell us what they REALLY think, they lose.

mitchellvii on April 17, 2012 at 8:55 AM

Wasn’t Beckel involved in some scandal where he bounced a check to a hooker?

That raises a couple of questions:

1. Are there really people dumb enough to write a check to a hooker?

2. Are there really hookers dumb enough to take a check from a john?

Listening to Beckel is pretty much a waste of time — it’s all heat and no light.

mr.blacksheep on April 17, 2012 at 8:55 AM

I hope Bob isn’t fired. His interaction with Gutfeld and Perino makes The Five a fun show to watch. Sure he’s stupid and bombastic at times, but he’s the crazy uncle you just like to have around and laugh at. He also knows a lot about presidential campaigns and he’s a resource, when he doesn’t lose his temper.

Wait, I will say a little more. Beckel is a classic case of a Lefty who thinks he (or she) can bully people they don’t like and/or have the temerity to disagree with them. For the so-called “intellectual” party (that’s a joke!) it’s remarkable how quickly they lose their mighty vocabulary and start talking like they live under a bridge.

Didn’t Beckel run the Mondale Campaign? How did that turn out?

“Beckel was the campaign manager for Walter Mondale’s 1984 presidential campaign. That campaign as managed by Beckel resulted in Mondale’s defeat which was the worst for any candidate in U.S. history in the Electoral College…”

So how does this guy get to be a political expert again?

mitchellvii on April 17, 2012 at 8:59 AM

Just about everything that comes out of Beckel’s mouth makes me crazy but outrage over something like this is just silly.

I don’t know where all of you people hang out, but I hear that word a hundred times a day. He apologized (eventually) and is still remorseful this morning. (If you can decipher his horribly written tweets.)

If a conservative pundit made the same mistake nobody would be calling for their head.

taternuggets on April 17, 2012 at 8:59 AM

I don’t agree with any of Beckel’s political views. Being on “The Five” and Hannity are his choices, so it’s not easy to feel sorry for him, but in his mind he’s in the belly of The Beast on both of these shows. He definitely needs to manage his mouth, but I wouldn’t fire him for this. Fox knows what they’re doing by putting a ‘token’ liberal on these panels – they shouldn’t act like they don’t know this could happen.

Give the guy a break.

MikeinPRCA on April 17, 2012 at 9:00 AM

The problem is that it goes beyond liberals and political/ideological discussions. Quite a lot of people think foul language adds to a discussion as “colorful metaphors”.

It adds that zing to let you know they’re serious and this is a big bleepin’ deal. /

I know some highly intelligent people who can have some pretty deep discussions who are also virulent potty mouths, specifically one who’s liberal and one who’s libertarian/conservative… worse, the conservative is a professing Christian and the liberal is a favored in-law of my children – cynical to her core, tact is not part of her vocabulary… it’s a wonder our children haven’t picked up her potty mouth. But then, foul language isn’t part of this family’s regular vocabulary.

With as large as the English language is, there are plenty of words available to use which can be more expressive and definitive then foul language. Laziness, crassness and presumed humor. No. Childishness.

My tolerance of Beckel goes back to one moment on Hannity last year where he said without even being prodded by Sean during a discussion on entitlements that Social Security needs to be reformed because it’s being used by Americans as a retirement fund which was never its original intent.

Now most of us on here possess that elusive thing called common sense, so a statement like that seems perfectly reasonable. But when’s the last time any pundit(even a conservative one) was so candid and blunt about it like that? It made me realize that even though Beckel’s a partisan hack and occasionally nasty(as this incident illustrates), somewhere deep in that cranium of his is a modicum of intellectual honesty.

Doughboy on April 17, 2012 at 9:01 AM

Bait – Offer a program for at risk children being given a head start in life. Who can oppose that?

Beckel’s F-bomb and subsequent childlike shame/befuddled geezer/grouchy adolescent reaction wasn’t nearly as fun as Joe Scarborough’s hilarious 2008 obliviousness to blurting “f— you”, with Mike Barnicle’s and Jay Carney’s shocked faces as Joe rambled on.

Ladysmith CulchaVulcha on April 17, 2012 at 9:02 AM

I’d like to note that there are plenty of instances of live television hosts doing bad, bad things, apologizing, and moving on, even in recent history.

Scarborough dropped an f-bomb on his show, Shepard Smith dropped one on a Fox streaming broadcast, Chuck Todd popped the finger on camera, Matthews got half an f-bomb off on an Imus broadcast, and so on. Beckel shouldn’t be canned over this.

Besides, it’s cable television anyway. FCC doesn’t regulate language there and can’t impose fines on them.

I think you’re the first person to bring up FCC fines, King. As far as I’m concerned, that’s not what’s at stake here. Outlets like FNC, and yes, even CNN and MSNBCLSDPCP, try to maintain a certain level of decorum so as to not piss off the viewers. Even the FCC responds almost exclusively to viewer complaints in levying fines against offending broadcast stations.

Why did Beckel get personal, instead of sticking to facts and figures as Stefano advised? Because he would lose on facts and figures.

As a frequent registered commenter on the Washington Post, I can attest to the fact that most liberals resort (quite quickly) to the personal insults, for the simple reason—they can’t argue with facts.

If you folks think arguing with our resident liberals is “interesting”, you should try out the Post. It’s really fun to watch them implode.

Vince on April 17, 2012 at 9:13 AM

Beckel is the sideshow.

The important thing is Head Start. Is it effective or not? That’s probably still open for debate, one study is not conclusive.

But why have Head Start to begin with? O.k., not every situation is ideal, but wouldn’t it be better if a parent stayed home with a young child and taught that child one on one? Of course, that sounds too much like work.

Liberals:
Woman who goes to another place and teaches in a Head Start government program:
Good.
Woman who stays home and teaches her own children, without a government program:
Bad.

Hening on April 17, 2012 at 9:19 AM

Besides the f-bomb bru-ha-ha, I disagree with Ed that Head Start isn’t worth the money. If the Head Start advantage dissolves 2 years later, then that is a message for kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms.

Don’t throw out a successful program because of the failure of future grades.

guera on April 17, 2012 at 9:19 AM

If you define “success” as a statistical blip, that ought to put to lie the idea of *your* intelligence as well.

FLconservative on April 17, 2012 at 9:19 AM

That isn’t quite the same thing.

I mean, they talk about Cheney all the time.

KingGold on April 17, 2012 at 9:21 AM

Beckel’s on a segment with Martha McCallum right now, so I doubt he’s getting much of a reprimand.

Rovin on April 17, 2012 at 9:18 AM

Of course not! He’s liberal! Now watch what happens if a conservative does the same thing…

gryphon202 on April 17, 2012 at 9:21 AM

if obama had a son, i think he’d look like bob…..

t8stlikchkn on April 17, 2012 at 9:23 AM

I can’t stay angry at Bob.

But I do have to wonder why “Hannity” doesn’t employ the seven second delay. This would have given the producers and/or censors plenty of time to bleep it out (as I’m sure it was for the replay).

eaglescout_1998 on April 17, 2012 at 9:23 AM

Head start: Federally funded day care so all the mommies could have a break from their punishment.

BobMbx on April 17, 2012 at 9:24 AM

Bob beckel would never make it in the green room here at hot air.

Ask madcon :)

“Facts to a liberal are like Kryptonite to Superman.” — Larry Elder

A truism most relevant to the above exchange in the video.

Buh-bye Bob! There’s no way he survives this.

I’m not as angry at Bob Beckel as I am at his defenders who find him “lovable,” “intelligent,” and/or “interesting.” I just don’t wanna hear that kind of language on TV. Period. Who’s going to stand up for me?

gryphon202 on April 17, 2012 at 9:26 AM

Some advocates of the program have acknowledged these dramatic results, but suggest that it’s not necessarily Head Start’s fault if its effects vanish during kindergarten and the first grade — perhaps our K-12 schools are to blame.

But that’s beside the point. Even if it’s true, it means that Head Start will be of no lasting value to children until we fix our elementary and secondary schools. Until then, money spent on Head Start will continue to be wasted.

This is rich stuff.
How about considering this: children of this age, no matter how stupid are going to more than likely make significant gains during this age of development, no matter how many morons are teaching them.
Head Start is just another arm of the Dept of Ed. Make no mistake.
This program & Kindergarten, IMO, should not be around.
You want daycare? Pay for it. Or pay for the kid to go to Montessori.
In fact to be honest, it isn’t the Federal Govt’s job anyway to be educating people.
LEt the states do that stuff & the local communities.
Whatever.
A kid is never going to show true progress if it’s got $hitty parents/guardians/relatives.
End of story.
I work my a$$ of in HS to help these kids & it’s always the same old story.
The ones with the character &/or good parents succeed.
They either are being held accountable, or the rare child in a million does well despite the $hit at home bcs they want something better for themselves.
This will never change & indeed will only get worse the more the govt intrudes into the lives of its citizens.
We should not be feeding kids, parenting them, etc.
And I should not be pressured as a teacher to make my tests ‘easier’ bcs the kid can’t get their $hit together.
I’ve persevered through that pressure, but it isn’t easy.

I would imagine a good rule of thumb is that if you are wearing a microphone you act as if it is on no matter what you think the status is.

That being said, in typical liberal fashion, Beckel’s profanity immediately becomes other people’s fault!

My uncle once cursed in front of me.

My grandmother said, “you going to kiss your baby with that mouth?”

He was properly chastised and I never forgot it.

itsspideyman on April 17, 2012 at 9:28 AM

Beckel just wanted to talk about having more flexibility.

There is a program in our region (it may be elsewhere too) called “Parents as Teachers”.

Soon after we had our firstborn we got information in the mail about it – between the hospital and the government… they know

My wife, being from here was familiar with it and thought it’d be worthwhile because it’s free and couldn’t hurt… what’s wrong with extra help and information that’d help parents be better parents was her thought process.

I was hesitant from the beginning. I took the eldest to one session at the school district’s head quarters and we had someone from the program come over to our house initially to explain the program.

Thereafter I stuck my feet in the mud and rejected the program. The idea of having someone from the local government (a “teacher”) come in to my house to teach me how to be a parent and “teach” my child? Get out, get out, get out. The whole program gave me the heebeejeebies as well as felt marketed to lower socio-economic families and those who’re in “at risk” situations. Neither describes our family.

That’s why we changed pediatricians too. One made us feel like we were idiots. No thanks.

Beckel is a fat, ugly, snarky pig. When he is on I find something else to do besides watch the tube. Disgusting puke.

UnEasyRider on April 17, 2012 at 9:30 AM

So who’s going to be watching “The Four” this evening?

claudius on April 17, 2012 at 9:30 AM

I watch the Five a lot and Beckel is the best part. I don’t agree with most of his opinions but he is funny.
