Boehner endorses Romney as donors consolidate

posted at 11:36 am on April 17, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Is the Republican nomination race over?  Newt Gingrich says no, but practically everyone else says yes.  That now includes the man currently holding Gingrich’s old job as House Speaker, who formally endorsed Mitt Romney for the nomination today:

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Tuesday endorsed Mitt Romney as the Republican presidential nominee, becoming one of the last party leaders to officially recognize the former Massachusetts governor as the GOP standard-bearer. …

“It’s clear now that Mitt Romney is going to be our nominee,” the Speaker told reporters after a House GOP conference meeting. “I think Mitt Romney has a set of economic policies that can put Americans back to work and contrast sharply with the failed economic policies of President Obama. And I will be proud to support Mitt Romney and do everything I can to help him win.”

A little too establishment-y for your taste?  WMAL and the Daily Caller both talked with Tea Party favorite and conservative activist Herman Cain, who endorsed Gingrich after withdrawing from the race in December.  Cain told the WMAL crew that it was time for Gingrich to acknowledge reality:

But on Monday Cain walked back his endorsement of Gingrich saying, “With all due respect, let’s get on with this, OK?”

“I even endorsed Newt Gingrich at one point because I thought that he had a shot. Well, not now. He doesn’t have a shot,” Cain said to Washington radio station WMAL.

A former Cain staffer told ABC News that Cain’s call for Gingrich to bow out isn’t surprising.

“He likes to go with his gut. Mr. Cain walked up to line of joining the establishment without crossing it,” the former Cain staffer said.

Cain softened a little by the time he spoke with the Daily Caller, but the message was about the same:

Former presidential candidate Herman Cain told The Daily Caller that he doesn’t know why former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is still in the Republican presidential race and doesn’t “know what’s going on in his head.”

“Everybody knows that Speaker Gingrich is not going to get the nomination, probably,” Cain explained. “It would have to take an absolute long-shot mix-up of everything that would happen at the convention. I don’t know what’s going on in his head, so I can’t comment.”

“I know that when I had to make the decision to drop out of the race, it was more difficult than making the decision to get in the race,” he continued.

Cain wants to get on with the election, but the big-ticket donors are already ahead of him.  Politico reports on the consolidation among some of the people who funded super-PACs for the GOP candidates while the fight was still on:

The super PAC mega-donors who dragged out the GOP primary are getting behind the establishment, rather than continuing to back rogue candidates and causes — as some in the Republican Party feared.

Donors like Sheldon Adelson and Foster Friess, who gave millions to anti-establishment presidential primary campaigns, are starting to fall in line — promising to support Mitt Romney and cutting checks to groups fighting for congressional Republicans.

Casino mogul Adelson and his wife, Miriam, who donated more than $15 million to a super PAC supporting Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign, gave $5 million to a super PAC linked to House Speaker John Boehner in February — according to newly released filings. And Adelson is hosting a fundraiser next Friday at one of his Las Vegas hotels for a Boehner umbrella group that works closely with the Republican National Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee, POLITICO has learned.

Last week, Friess, a Wyoming investor who donated $1.7 million to super PACs backing Rick Santorum’s since-aborted presidential campaign, told POLITICO he intended to support third-party groups backing Romney.

And even supporters of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, like homebuilder Bob Perry and investors Harold Simmons and Harlan Crow, are giving six- and seven-figure donations to super PACs backing Romney and establishment Republican candidates.

I think the “fear” in this case was that Romney wouldn’t be able to unite the party after winning the nomination, not that he would.  Adelson made no bones about his willingness to get behind Romney as far back as January, if Gingrich’s campaign didn’t work out.  The issue now isn’t whether Romney makes the best candidate to challenge Obama; that fight is over, and Romney won it.  The issue now is beating Barack Obama, taking the Senate, and keeping control of the House.  The issues of “establishment” versus “grassroots” still might apply in primaries for Senate and House races, but no longer in the presidential race.

Will Gingrich accept reality and shift his focus to issues and conservative Congressional candidates, as Rick Santorum seems ready to do?  The longer he waits to do so, the more his credibility and impact will diminish.  He doesn’t need to endorse Romney for that to happen; he just needs to acknowledge that he has lost his bid, and that it’s time to put his considerable talent to use more productively.  As Herman Cain says, Gingrich should “get on with this.”

If no team signs him, all we’ll hear is, “The NBA is homophobic!” until an openly-homosexual player is signed or retain under a new contract.

Don’t professional sports contracts generally have a ‘morals clause’?

Don’t accuse Tellem of pushing Collins to go public to help him sign with a team. “Initially I wanted to wait until after he signed.”

Bullcrap. Collins has been on six teams in eleven years, and is a mediocre bench player at the end of his career. If he hadn’t come out, Collins would be retiring and no one would notice.

Chris Broussard of ESPN offered low-key boilerplate religious disapproval of homosexuality on the air yesterday and the network’s already apologized in the name of “diversity.” Exit quotation: “They’re committed to ‘diversity’ but not to airing a diversity of opinion?”

Funny that, isn’t it? “Diversity” now means acceptance and enthusiastic support for whatever sick lifestyle someone chooses to live. “Diversity of thought”? That’s all well and good as long as your thoughts embrace and accept their definition of diversity, if not: HATER!

What a twisted world we have become.

It would be great if the fans in whatever city signed him revolted. Given the failure of SSM and other gay agenda voter initiatives in many states, that may actually happen. The NBA may actually believe its own HR propaganda, but the fans don’t have to take sensitivity courses or risk being fired if they express their opinion by not buying tickets.

Not sure the guys career is getting ripped to shreds. And, not sure neocons are pissed either. What is interesting about this whole episode is that being gay gets you preferential status in the “basketball” world. Michael Jordan, a well known black athlete, just married a model and was he lauded as a “hero” – nope. Jason Collins declares he is gay and, viola, he is a hero.

If the objective here is “equality” why isn’t Michael Jordan a hero for marrying a model? It is the hypocrisy of the equality argument that gets scrutiny here.

Chris Broussard of ESPN offered low-key boilerplate religious disapproval of homosexuality on the air yesterday and the network’s already apologized in the name of “diversity.”

I wouldn’t have classified is as “low-key boilerplate religious disapproval.” I’m not sure what you were expecting, but I didn’t consider it boilerplate.

I think this piece omitted some of what Broussard said in the video, but he straightforwardly spoke the truth.

ESPN pro basketball analyst Chris Broussard generated his own controversy with comments on live television Monday that equated homosexuality to sin.

Broussard was speaking on a special edition of ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” centered on NBA center Jason Collins becoming the first active player from one of the four major U.S. team sports to reveal himself as gay.

“If you’re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality, (but) adultery, fornication, premarital sex between heterosexuals … I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ,” Broussard said. “I would not characterize that person as a Christian, because I don’t think the Bible would characterize them as a Christian.”

Considering the way Tim Tebow keeps finding ways to be photographed in little more than a jock strap, you would think that if a gay market was going to get him a contract it would’ve happened already. But either way, we thank him.

libfreeordie on April 30, 2013 at 6:08 PM

If he ends up unsigned then technically he’ll have come out after playing his last game, which complicates the “first gay active player in a major sport” narrative. The league won’t want to forfeit that claim to fame, and it really won’t want people thinking that Collins wasn’t signed because he’s gay. There’s advertising money waiting here too, plus potential interest from casual fans intrigued to see Collins play. One of his former coaches said he can help on the court as a defensive role player and off the court as a marketing hook

Any NBA owner who agrees to sign Collins better really want the publicity(which will be over by the time training camp is done, BTW). The NBA league minimum for a 10+ year vet like Collins ain’t cheap. I’m not sure what it amounts to under the new CBA signed a couple years ago, but under the old one it was close to a million five. No scrub center is worth that kind of money just for a little extra attention at the beginning of the season. And his presence on that team won’t mean squat in terms of ticket sales. Seriously, who the hell pays good money for even a nosebleed seat just because there’s an openly gay player on the squad?

The best solution for all parties IMO is for someone to give him a 10-day contract, play him a game or two in garbage time, and then cut him. That way the NBA gets the honor of having the first openly gay male athlete(unless the NFL beats them to the punch in September), Collins gets a little more publicity, and there are no accusations of homophobia.

He is a 7 foot defender who is also an enforcer. Because he’s not injured or going to Europe as many aging big men are, he will/would have landed a job as a 12th man somewhere making about 2M a year. If you look at Silver’s 61% projection or 11/18 being in the NBA the next year, 1 went to Olympiacos for a pay raise, 1 was injured. 11/16 is pretty decent odds

Bubba Watson shows support for ESPN analyst that condemned Jason Collins. (Notice the title of the article.)

Kudos to Bubba Watson!

As for Jason Collins, at age 36, his best days are behind him. At best, he’ll be a bench player that will only play if a player gets in foul trouble, hurt, or in garbage time. He’d probably be inclined to retire but since he “came out”, somebody will put him on a roster at the behest of Commissioner Stern.

RedRobin145 on April 30, 2013 at 6:48 PM

OK…

Via Mediaite and the Daily Rushbo, it’s funny ’cause it’s kinda sorta true.

What’s “kinda sorta true”?

How does Collins coming out as gay have anything whatsoever to do with Tebow and his unapologetic Christianity? They don’t. Rush’s statement is patently ridiculous. Tebow wasn’t a bench warmer for the Jets because of his faith…as a lifelong Jets fan, that whole mess is simply par for the course. And Collins won’t get signed because he came out as gay either…there’s a reason gays in pro sports don’t “come out”, and it’s not because that’s a career enhancer.

Your not that obtuse, are you? The fact is that the guy had very little chance of being signed with another U.S. team, and his coming out is awfully coincidental with the end of a mediocre career. Honestly, I may have done the same thing in his position, and the notoriety could give him a shot on a European team for a few years.

So stop with mindless and hackneyed attacks, and employ a little common sense. This thing is getting far more attention than it deserves, and Collins is not the courageous hero the media is making him out to be.

WHOA!!!

An audience member at the event asked Ryan why he doesn’t support same-sex marriage. Ryan said that while he continues to believe marriage should only be between a man and a woman, he now regrets voting in 1999 to ban same-sex couples in the District of Columbia from adopting children.

“Adoption, I’d vote differently these days. That was I think a vote I took in my first term, 1999 or 2000,” Ryan said. “I do believe that if there are children who are orphans who do not have a loving person or couple, I think if a person wants to love and raise a child they ought to be able to do that. Period. I would vote that way.”

The people of God have been (and always will be) persecuted in this world to some degree or another. That is because we are in the world, but not of the world, even as Jesus Christ was “in the world”, but not “of the world”. This state of affairs will continue until the Lord returns to preside over his flock, and judging from the signs of the time, that may be fairly soon.

Chris Broussard of ESPN offered low-key boilerplate religious disapproval of homosexuality on the air yesterday and the network’s already apologized in the name of “diversity.” Exit quotation: “They’re committed to ‘diversity’ but not to airing a diversity of opinion?”

That man spoke the truth and of course stupid ESPN apologizes for it..I’ll never bow down the alter that is homosexuality..I’ll never stop saying what it is..a sin and people who continue to live in sin like that can not be a christian and will face hell if they don’t repent and accept jesus and change

Tebow was blacklisted for his Christianity. If you can’t entertain that thought, look at it in the context of the most important news of the week so far. I am a gay basketball/football player. The President endorses my lifestyle. Criticize my lifestyle at your peril, as in == end of career.

Tebow has the one quality that can’t be practiced, faked or coached. It works even when you have average skills. It compensates for weaknesses. It wins. Leadership. The NFL can’t have moral leadership. It goes against the wishes of the progressive cabal. Tebow had to be shut down.

I just wish there was a courageous owner out there.

Chris Broussard is a light in a dark place as well.

May the true living God (not Barack Obama’s Molech) bless him beyond all measure.

He can play D, which explains his long career

He’s good at covering guys.

Seriously, I would never play a serious game of basketball if there’s a woman on the court.
No gentleman would. And no lady would participate, either.
There’s this thing called sexual tension.

Not to mention the locker room!
Why not have high school cheerleaders share showers with male sports teams?

When it comes to homosexuality, the Left loses all ability to reason.
If they ever had any.

Tebow took the Broncos over when they were 2 and 5 and got them to the second round of the playoffs. Manning could do no better. Elway is an a$$. Tebow will play in the NFL again and he will go down as one of the best. As you stated, Tebow has leadership qualities that cannot be taught. When given the chance, he is a winner.

I like Tim Tebow, and I hope he can make it in the NFL. But can someone talk some sense into him? Somebody puhleeze tell him about Michael Robinson…..used to be a star quarterback for Penn State. Now a starting full-back for the Seattle Seahawks after a good run in San Francisco. I can easily see Tim Tebow making it as a fullback or a tight end. Sheesh, maybe it should be Michael Robinson giving Tebow a shout…(“Hey Bro…you can make it as a tight end”)

Antwaan Randle-El: former star college quarterback with Indiana, fantastic pro career as a receiver.

Denard Robinson: star quarterback at Michigan…will likely do well in the pro’s at running back.

Brian Mitchell: former college quarterback….awesome return specialist with the Redskins and Eagles.

Of the three of them, Collins is the most likely to be hassled (or worse) by opponents and the public more broadly for who he is, but as objects of media scrutiny in particular, it’s debatable.

You really don’t pay attention to sports do you? Tebow has been openly mocked by opponents, teammates, sports writers, sports announcers and the general public? Collins? If I grant you Broussard as one example, do you have another? Beuller? Beuller?

I doubt ESPN goes a week without one snark on Tebow. And currently it is probably every day. When Collins is made the butt of sports media’s oh-so-clever puns then we’ll call it “debatable” and “most likely”. Until then, not so much. MSM hero is most likely.

The way that ABC is fawning, I expect them to have Collins make the rounds as the “new gay partner” on one or more of their primetime comedy shows.
