The obligatory “Hillary has a beer in Colombia” post

posted at 9:58 pm on April 16, 2012 by Allahpundit

The photos are here in case you missed them elsewhere, and here’s the obligatory pun-tastic New York Post cover. Two camps on this one: Team Gardiner, which thinks she’s an embarrassment for cutting loose publicly in a way no other SoS would, and Team Fleischer, which thinks everyone should mellow out about an adult having a drink with staffers after work. I’m on Team Fleischer. The problem with the “beneath the dignity of the office” argument, I think, is that, like it or not, she’s not just any Secretary of State. She’s Hillary!, the rare SoS whose political stature exceeds that of the office. The public will cut her slack on this that it wouldn’t cut, say, Warren Christopher because they know Christopher only through his official role whereas they’ve known Hillary as First Lady, Senator, presidential candidate, feminist icon, and now chief diplomat for 20 years. She’s familiar in a way few apparatchiks are so it’s easier to relate to the human side of her. Frankly, I don’t even think of her as taking official trips when she’s jetting off to see some foreign leader in Europe or the Middle East or South America or wherever. She and Bill have known all of those people for years and could get a meeting with them even without the State Department’s imprimatur. Go figure that she thinks she’ll get a little slack for a half hour of light partying in Colombia.

If you want to feel embarrassed about a diplomatic gaffe — assuming the pathetic Secret Service scandal hasn’t already given you your fill — here’s O trying to talk about the Falklands. Emphasis on “trying”:

President Obama erred during a speech at the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, when attempting to call the disputed archipelago by its Spanish name.

Instead of saying Malvinas, however, Mr Obama referred to the islands as the Maldives, a group of 26 atolls off that lie off the South coast of India…

Cristina Kirchner, the Argentine president, has renewed her country’s sovereignty claim to the Falklands in the build-up to the 30th anniversary of the Argentine invasion of the islands, which triggered the Falklands War, on April 2…

“This is something in which we would not typically intervene,” he said, adding that there should be dialogue between the UK and Argentina even though the Coalition refuses to negotiate sovereignty of the Falklands with Mrs Kirchner’s government.

Never mind the silly error in confusing the names. Why is O encouraging Argentina’s irredentism by using the Argentinian name for the islands and specifying that the U.S. won’t take sides? Isn’t the “special relationship” special once again? What about the basketball game?

The real scandal is she’s drinking Aguila. It’s okay, but she’s in Cartagena…on the coast. Where’s the Costena?

Blaise on April 17, 2012 at 1:58 AM

She reminds me of the Dos Equis guy.

It’s not beneath the dignity of the office. You should read about what some of the 19th century Secretary of States did. Hell, Abel Upshur got blown up partying on a boat.

Sherman1864 on April 17, 2012 at 5:51 AM

I don’t think that it places her in a good light as SOS on official bizness, but since she says she’s hanging up her cleats after this year, I guess it’s a little like Nelson Rockefeller, as Ford’s VP, giving the finger to a heckler from the podium. He knew his career was over and he’d never be president, so what the hell . . .

Haha. Take that Bill.

Bottoms up, Hillary…!….er, well, I mean, have a great time. If any woman could use a little time away from the office, its certainly her.

I don’t give a flip if Hilary has a few beers. I don’t even care all that much that he made a gaffe and got the name wrong. It’s his feckless, disastrous foreign policy positions that infuriate and worry me. And zero has a lot of fracking gall to compare himself to Ronald Reagan, who obviously did take sides.

And speaking of Argentina, they’ve just seized control of Spanish owned oil company. Maxine Waters sends a high five.

I agree. She publicly represents the United States and consequently has a responsibility to act with decorum. This behavior is undignified. For what it’s worth, I’d say that no matter who it was.

Behavior such as this reflects poorly upon our country.

dogsoldier on April 17, 2012 at 7:18 AM

Speaking of decorum…

I’ll bet Hillary can’t belch louder than Moochelle.

viking01 on April 17, 2012 at 7:41 AM

Hillary’s staff must have forgotten her obligatory two bottles of Makers Mark.

Hillary is probably an alcoholic – has been for years. The press just refuses to dish on her drinking.

It’s true.

jake-the-goose on April 17, 2012 at 7:47 AM

I’m no fan of Hillary but sheesh – some of you are coming across as sanctimoneous prudes. Are we to believe that you never had a drink after work with your co-workers? Is there some info proving she was drunk vice having a drink? I imagine this was a private gathering. Having a drink and doing some version of the post menopausal woman dance does not equate donning pasties and working a pole.

katiejane on April 17, 2012 at 7:50 AM

And you just know that when she danced Hillary danced about as well as Elaine Benes. Ugh. The full-body dry heave. Oh the humanity.

curved space on April 17, 2012 at 7:55 AM

Sorry Allah, she is NOT and icon, of any mention.
As a life-long Hillary-hater, I think she should be ashamed of herself.
Of course, she thinks she is above the law, any law.
Since the O-dreamweaver took office, all protocol/all traditions are out the window.
I see a picture, with Hillary drinking something dark, definitely not water, surrounded by women, no men in sight, at Club Havana.
How. Appropriate.

askwhatif on April 17, 2012 at 8:22 AM

Having to put up with Bill all these years then work for The One and carry out his feckless foreign policy entitles her to a few stiff drinks in my opinion.
And how about the smartest man in the world? He gets himself a threefer! Encourage a war, piss off two allies and trip on his shoelaces, all in one sentence!

Curmudgeon on April 17, 2012 at 8:35 AM

At the very least, the optics are bad. Because with the current news cycle, she looks like she’s at this week’s GSA conference, and they’re all waiting for the Secret Service to show up to the party.

I do not feel sorry for Hillary for one second. She choose to stay with Bill and work for Obama. She is not a victim. She can all she wants to drink, but if her life is pathetic (which it is), her fault.

I don’t expect dignity of office from anyone in this admin. I do expect that they would do their job when on the job. She was on foreign soil and on the job just like the SS agents and wasn’t doing her job at a Cuban night club in Colombia.

Kissmygrits on April 17, 2012 at 9:10 AM

You know, this is how the Korean War started: SoS left Korea out of a list of places we would go to war to protect from the Communists, and they figured “Hey! That means it’s fair game!” This has just encouraged the Argentinians to try again. Well, that and Britain’s enervated military.

GWB on April 17, 2012 at 9:12 AM

Hilary’s relaxation was entirely appropriate. It’s ridiculous to criticize her for this.

David Blue on April 17, 2012 at 9:26 AM

Dude, allow me to explain. First, as far as this being a private soiree, it looks like a local saloon to me. According to one report I read it was indeed a saloon.

In private yeah, I don’t have a problem with anyone knocking back a few and toss in some wings and veggies for good measure.

Did you guys also see the picture of her on the pane full of reporters looking three sheets to the wind?

dogsoldier on April 17, 2012 at 9:43 AM

ugh. pane above should read plane.

With all of her other stupidity, is this really news worthy? If half of you knew what your elected officials do in D.C. every night you’d be horrified. This looks like a church picnic compared to the nightly parties thrown by lobbyists.

Dude – are you saing that no public official should EVA have a drink in public? Would you rather they sit in their hotel room and suck up booze from the cash bar and bill that to the taxpayer?

Get over the idea that public officials are not entitled to have some private life as long as it is within legal and moral bounds. And if you’re saying that Hillary having a beer is immoral there probably is no hope for sensible discourse about this.

If they are representing the United States, I expect them to behave themselves. When I travel for my employers, I am expected to live within my per diem and behave professionally AT ALL TIMES.

And if you’re saying that Hillary having a beer is immoral there probably is no hope for sensible discourse about this.

Please go back and read my post at 9:43. What did I say? Here I will help,

In private yeah, I don’t have a problem with anyone knocking back a few and toss in some wings and veggies for good measure.

As a taxpaying citizen I don’t even mind picking up the tab for a couple of pops and some wings. (Lets keep it under $100 ok)

Instead of saying Malvinas, however, Mr Obama referred to the islands as the Maldives, a group of 26 atolls off that lie off the South coast of India…

Tomorrow we shall receive communiques from the foreign ministers of India and Pockyston expressing disappointment over not being invited to a meeting where Argentina negotiates a claim to the Maldives…

But if El Presidente is trying to impress los Mehicanos with his Spanish, he should talk about the claim of ArHentina to las Islas MalBinas.

Or Maldives, or Malta, or Malia, or Sasha, or something like that.
