Quotes of the day

posted at 10:34 pm on April 16, 2012 by Allahpundit

“Mitt Romney went well beyond his standard stump speech at a closed-door fundraiser on Sunday evening, and offered some of the most specific details to date about the policies he would pursue if elected…

“‘I’m going to take a lot of departments in Washington, and agencies, and combine them. Some eliminate, but I’m probably not going to lay out just exactly which ones are going to go,’ Romney said. ‘Things like Housing and Urban Development, which my dad was head of, that might not be around later. But I’m not going to actually go through these one by one. What I can tell you is, we’ve got far too many bureaucrats. I will send a lot of what happens in Washington back to the states.’…

“Romney said the GOP must offer its own policies to woo Hispanics, including a ‘Republican DREAM Act,’ referring to the legislative proposal favored by Democrats that would offer illegal immigrants a limited path to citizenship, to give Hispanic voters a real choice between parties…

“He said his campaign had been well-covered by Fox News, but that Fox was watched by ‘the true believers,’ and that he knew he would have to reach out to a broader audience in order to win over independents and women voters that will decide the election in November. He painted a picture of a media landscape in which liberal voices won out on television, but conservatives were strongest online.”

***

“[N]ow that the former Massachusetts governor is the likely GOP nominee, many Republicans think that the standoffish candidate actually needs to embrace his Mormonism publicly to open a window into his life…

“Nance maintains that if voters could see Romney worshiping, and observe him as a leader of his church, it could go a long way in helping people connect with him. ‘His religion isn’t the issue- he’s the issue,’ says Nance. ‘At some point you need to be honest about who you are. He has an authenticity problem. People don’t get him. They don’t feel that they know the guy.’…

“Bruce Merrill, a senior research fellow at the Morrison Institute at Arizona State University who was raised a Mormon, believes that the key to Romney’s success in the general election may lie in his being as specific and as open as possible about his faith. ‘It’s who Romney is and he can’t really be himself without showing who he is,’ says Merrill. ‘It’s more than a religion- it’s a subculture, a way of life. Mormons socialize together, they do business together, and they raise families together. [Avoiding it publicly] just perpetuates the view that he’s distant.’”

***

“As Congress was set to reconvene on Monday, House Republicans said Mr. Romney could go his own way on smaller issues that may help define him as separate from his Congressional Republican counterparts. But, they said, he must understand that they are driving the policy agenda for the party now.

“‘We’re not a cheerleading squad,’ said Representative Jeff Landry, an outspoken freshman from Louisiana. ‘We’re the conductor. We’re supposed to drive the train.’

“Still, party leaders insist that House Republicans and Mr. Romney are united on issues that matter most. ‘On the big issues — spending, taxes, what we do with the deficit — I just don’t see much difference,’ said Representative Tom Cole of Oklahoma, a member of the Republican leadership, ‘and more importantly, I don’t see an escape.’”

***

“But where Romney is different is that he is not honest about himself. He could, as he did just recently, stand before the National Rifle Association as if he were, in spirit as well as membership, one of them. In body language, in the blinking of the eyes, in the nonexistent pounding pulse, there was not the tiniest suggestion that here was a man who just as confidently once embodied the anti-gun ethic of Massachusetts, the distant land he once governed. Instead, he tore into Obama for the (nonexistent) threat the president posed to Second Amendment rights — a false accusation from a false champion.

“A marathon of debates and an eon of campaigning have toughened and honed Romney. He commands the heights of great assurance, and he knows, as some of us learn too late in life, that the truth is not always a moral obligation but sometimes merely what works. He often cites his business background as commending him for the presidency. That’s his forgivable absurdity. Instead, what his career has given him is the businessman’s concept of self — that what he does is not who he is. This is what enables the slumlord to be a charitable man. This is what enables the corporate raider to endow his university. Business is business. It’s what you do. It is not who you are. Lying isn’t a sin. It’s a business plan.”

***

“Seamus, Mitt Romney’s Irish setter who traveled with his young family strapped to the roof of their station wagon, ‘loved’ those trips, despite once getting ill, Ann Romney told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview…

“‘The dog loved it,’ Ann Romney said. ‘He would see that crate and, you know, he would, like, go crazy because he was going with us on vacation. It was to me a kinder thing to bring him along than to leave him in the kennel for two weeks.’

“Adding to the left’s narrative that Romney had little compassion for the animal is a detail from the 1983 trip that Ann Romney confirmed to Sawyer. The dog became sick, defecating all over itself and the windshield of the car, leading Romney to hose them both off before they continued on the drive to Canada.”

It seems to come down to this: We have a responsibility to vote for Romney because he’s not Obama. Nothing more. He doesn’t have to earn our vote. He doesn’t have to convince us of anything. We are required to forget the evidence of history. He just is and that should be enough for us. Oh, and I love this one: We hate our country and want it to fail if we don’t vote for Romney. You Romneybots are greatly irritated that we can’t be bought, coerced or shamed into voting for our slow descent into hell because it’s just so much better than our quick descent into hell. Keep trying. We’ll be here, same as you.

Other pearls of wisdom from the lips of OROMa:

“Fox is watched by the true believers,” Romney told donors, according to the Wall Street Journal. “We need to get the independents and the women.”

Good to know many others also think he’s striving to lose this one:

Czar of Defenestration on April 17, 2012 at 6:54 AM

Romney is mistaken if he believes that “merging” federal agencies will work to cut the red tape and streamline it with these “cuts”. Per experience, this type of merging is quite confusing (at least in the beginning) with the people, and employees are mostly reassigned, not cut. A main federal agency can accommodate two or more agencies “underneath” which would make the main agency an “umbrella” agency.

Now per the 10th Amendment-bring the umbrellas to the states-I wonder if the Govs can have a say or modify these changes at the federal level. If they don’t need one or two parts that the main federal umbrella agency provides, can they do away with those? Not to mention that depends on the size and scope of each state, the amount of these morphed agencies can be in each state. That does generate jobs, but the problem of multiple agencies with the red tape still exists.

I wish I could ask him about that, because in PR we had main government agencies, and the gov (not this one) merged up to four into one main government agency. Time to spend more money changing all that letterhead!

ProudPalinFan on April 17, 2012 at 7:20 AM

He often cites his business background as commending him for the presidency. That’s his forgivable absurdity.

If only he were a Marxist Community Organizer steeped in Alinsky. Romney can make amends by dedicating his books to Lucifer. Maybe even invoking Lucifer on the campaign trail…

I just HOPE that if Obama is just FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER…….

…….subjected to a real scorched earth so called NEGATIVE AD campaign his numbers will collapse. If McCain had done that in 2008 we wouldn’t have had the last 3 1/2 years of this crap.

Build up a positive image for Romney, then go negative on Obama like the US did in bombing the Germans in WW2. Oh, and pic a black, hispanic or female as the Veep nominee. He needs to give voters a “historic” choice to replace the first historic choice they made in 2008. That’s just the identity politics we have today.

NOBAMA 2012………..and fight the gop in 2013 if we have too.

Nothing substantial is gonna change. We’re still a long way from even slowing down the Progressive juggernaut strangling the country. Don’t mean to be a wet blanket but let’s keep it in focus. The mere fact that someone like Palin has been effectively neutralized should send shivers down the spines of those hoping to reverse the situation.

Cleombrotus on April 17, 2012 at 12:09 AM

*Drama queen alert* Palin has been pushing Newt on us. That sends shivers down my spine. I can understand supporting him out of the gate because there were things about him which held a lot of appeal. But as the campaign progressed and we witnessed him in action she didn’t pull back and kept betting on a lame horse.

Do NOT roll agencies together and expect government to get smaller. DHS comes to mind on that, as well as the dysfunctional DNI system, as well as HHS.

You do NOT get smaller bureaucracies from rolling agencies together. I’ve seen that on the small scale where three sub-agencies got rolled together and their cumulative ‘need’ for GS-13 to GS-15 administrative staff DOUBLED. Same number of people doing the work, but more administrators.

If Romney wants to be effective he can do a very few and quite simple things to start:

1) Tell Congress that any budget that lumps agencies together into spending pools will be vetoed. One budget per agency.

2) Tell Congress that for each function, for each line item of spending in those agency budgets there must be a direct citation back to the US Constitution as to where they get the power to spend this money for those functions. That will also be a veto use if it is not done.

3) When duplicative or largely similar programs are identified Congress is to name ONE agency for that program and eliminate all other similar programs from other agencies.

4) If he is serious about getting the States to start picking up their part, he could ask the State legislatures if they really want the US federal government to hold all the land that it holds in their States. Let them know that they are the owners of the land, and that the federal government requires ongoing agreement to use that land. This should be an easy sell to his federalist credentials and start getting the US government out of holding so much in the way of mineral rights.

The regulatory behemoths at EPA, Ag, Labor, and DHS must be addressed, particularly EPA. DHS needs to be broken back down to parts, TSA abolished over a two year spiral removal to give airlines the responsibility to oversee flight safety. The others have no real good attached to them and the States should be able to figure these things out for themselves. Eliminate and block grant half the budgets of each to the States for those purposes and then spiral them out over 5 years. The Fed. Reserve must be de-fanged, audited, brought to task and, finally, its players identified. Let the people KNOW who runs the fed internally and WHY they are granted such sweeping power. There is a butt-load of debt that the Reserves hold and that is the key to our continued future and liberty as individuals, and a Nation.

It’s nice that Romney is starting to let a few glimmers of light out… sad to see that it is in purely process oriented terms and directed at the fringes of the problem. You can be a federalist or not, and to date Romney has been unwilling to expand the idea of the States doing things without the federal government to all venues outside of the few granted TO the federal government FROM the States. If he means what he says about federalism, then it is a whole kit’n’kaboodle affair, not a chinese menu, you do not get to pick and choose over the topics as they are set by common agreement already.

Yes, if Romney gets the nomination and becomes President I will be a harsh critic of him to do better for the American people by having the government do less. A lot less. I criticized Bush, I’ve criticized Obama and I’ll do that to Romney as well on the same grounds and basis, pointing to the Constitution as our standard to repair to.

Once the hormones go, my favorite thing is to go visit a restaurant from Diners, Drive-ins & Dives with my favorite and greatest hubby or go to a car show like Barret Jackson.
He’s a Texas boy. They TKB.

Cindy, thanks for the words of support.
I won’t worry about it.

arnoild, if you’re still there on this thread…

What were the colors of these cars?
Engine size?

Who the hell knew these would becomne classics that we would treasure now? Love those Camaros.

Typicalwhitewoman on April 17, 2012 at 11:55 AM

Nova red—straight six. Camaro lt.metallic blue, 327 engine.
Wish I still had the Camaro but an elderly man who shouldn’t have been driving totaled it and tried to total arnold in 1974.

According to damian on the Buffett thread someone could track him down so that is why he wouldn’t say what state he was ruining.

Only an idiot would use their real name, what is damian’s excuse?

Cindy Munford on April 17, 2012 at 1:15 PM

I was wondering why damian wouldn’t state where he lives.
He must recognize he’s a schmuck.

I wouldn’t care who showed up at my house.
We know how to protect our property in Texas, including me.

Going to the shooting range once a month keeps me sane!

He has none. He was flat out lying on so many fronts. If he was trying to light many people up he did. The problem is most of us want an honest debate but I KEEP forgetting libs can’t or won’t follow normal rules for discourse.

Look at all the threats towards people in the news and conservative figures. Contrast that with ones directed at lefties.

The left couldn’t even substantiate threats and epithets during the Obamacare fiasco.

You know this means you are easy, don’t you? Most people have to be given free stuff to forget that the Dems are lying to them.

Cindy Munford on April 17, 2012 at 1:52 PM

Cleombrotus stated next summer Sparky. What’s your point again?

idesign on April 17, 2012 at 9:00 AM

You’re right. I misread – was running out the door. Romney is a severely frugal person and was a frugal CEO. He is just as capable (if not more so) as Palin of repairing our debt/economic growth situation. The idea that we’re doomed without Palin at the helm is a fantasy and unduly pessimistic (and she made the choice not to run so these would/coulda/shoulda arguments are beyond tiresome).

No, I was coming home from college classes and an old fart turned right in front of me. Neither of us was drinking. If he would have taken evasive action like I did we probably would have just kissed.

Just hearing about your beloved Camaro makes me ill.
That’s as bad as Obama’s bad luck.

I bought an old and really crappy ’68 Camaro, from my boss, for my daughter when she started driving.

Her girlfriend came to visit and she totally wrecked it in Laguna Beach, CA when I lived on the West Coast.

Then my Mom totaled her 1970 XKE Jaguar, which I would have inherited. Black with red interior – her hubby ordered it in England at the factory.

Sheesh! Bad things happen to good people.
