Geithner: Hey, how about that “remarkably successful” Obamanomics that might not produce growth this spring?

posted at 12:01 pm on April 15, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner made the Sunday talk-show rounds this morning, but seemed to have a little difficulty in getting his talking points straight. On Meet the Press, David Gregory had to ask Geithner twice whether he’d call the economic policies of the Obama administration a success.  Geithner finally said that they have proven “remarkably successful,” even though nominal unemployment has been above the 8% mark that Barack Obama promised his policies would prevent for 38 straight months, and real unemployment rests somewhere between 11-12%:

Geithner wants us to compare the effectiveness of Obama’s policies against those of other recoveries.  Fortunately, the Minneapolis Federal Reserve has an app for that.  Let’s just look at the comparison from the points of recovery for each of the post-WWII recessions in employment:

It’s the third-worst recovery performance when one includes the 1980-81 double dip as two separate data tracks.  The 2001 recovery took longer, too, but that’s in part because it didn’t have as much ground to make up.

How about in economic output?  The Obama recovery is the worst post-WWII recovery in terms of growth:

I didn’t bring up growth by accident, either.  In his other appearance today on ABC’s This Week, Geithner couldn’t state with any certainty whether the “remarkably successful” Obamanomics policies would produce a third straight spring of stagnation:

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said he believed the economy is “gradually getting stronger,” but said “we can’t tell yet” whether growth has stalled as it has in previous spring months during the Obama administration.

“We can’t tell yet,” Geithner said on “This Week” when asked if the same pattern from previous years was repeating, with strong growth in early months of the year, followed by a slow-down, as happened the last two years.

“But if you look back at what happened in 2010 and 2011, you’re right that you saw some early strength in the beginning of the year,” Geithner said. “But then what happened was, the crisis in Europe in 2010 and 2011 and then the crisis in Japan and then the oil shock caused growth to slow. And then in ’11, it was made worse by the – by all the political drama around the debt limit, which was very damaging to confidence.”

Geithner had to admit the obvious:

He acknowledged that not all Americans have felt that improvement, with a new ABC News/Washington poll last week showing that 76 percent of Americans still believe the country is in a recession.

“Well, it’s obviously still a very tough economy out there,” Geithner said.

Obviously.  And it’s equally obvious that even when using Geithner’s own comparisons, it’s the worst-handled recession in over 60 years.  No wonder Geithner declines to commit to a prediction of significant growth in the coming months.

There is one more CRITICAL statistic that should have been pointed out.

We have had 8%+ unemployment for the LONGEST period of time in the history of the US! Longer than at any point during the great depression.

In another part of that interview with Geithner, he clearly stated that Obama has both a new tax plan to broaden the base, as well as a new spending plan. Somehow, Gregory never once asked him where those super secret plans are.

The unemployment graph is apples and oranges. Today “unemployment” is measured in terms of how many people are currently receiving unemployment payments — that didn’t even exist back then. When people fall off the insurance payroll, that doesn’t necessarily mean more people are employed.

Even with extended benefits, the number of people eligible HAD to drop sooner or later, even if no single new job is created. Yet getting that “down” to 8% is this administration’s biggest accomplishment. But with enough insane and idiotic propaganda behind it, that just might be enough.

I think the slogan, “Yes We Can” was derived from the 1987 poem by Johnny Duncan called, ‘I Can”. The interesting thing about this poem is that it was the origin of the term, “African American”.
Most people think the term “African American” has been around for 100′s of years; it hasn’t. It’s only been around for 25 years.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Where_did_the_term_African-American_originate

So this brings about another question. If the term, “African American” originated in 1987 why does BHO’s 1961 birth certificate say “African American” instead of N e g r o (the term used in 1961)?

Bambi on April 15, 2012 at 2:34 PM

The unemployment graph is apples and oranges. Today “unemployment” is measured in terms of how many people are currently receiving unemployment payments — that didn’t even exist back then. When people fall off the insurance payroll, that doesn’t necessarily mean more people are employed.

Those recessions are also apples and oranges. None of those other recessions witnessed the near collapse of modern capitalism in the USA or had a trajectory leading toward a depression.

I’m sure Tiny Tim was a dweeb

Isn’t it funny how the smartest kids, the dweebs in high school, generally are the ones who become surgeons, scientists, and go on to do great things, while Joe the Plumber played on the football team yet never amounted to anything? Obama: We have to have an all of the above strategy to our energy needs…followed by digging moratoriums, closing coal plants, blocking the keystone pipeline, and coming soon abolishing fracking. You can’t run an economy $2.264 trillion the size of the United States, on Obama’s green bundler’s fantasies of carpeting deserts with solar panels. Of course as long as he’s president it’s pretty obvious they can keep bilking the American Tax Payer with their Green Energy boondoggles…..like I don’t know the Chevy Volt for example.

Budget:

revenues: $2.264 trillion

expenditures: $3.604 trillion

Seems like they always complain about the last decade. Well, if you take out when Obama has been President I’m not seeing very much wrong with the last decade. Pretty low unemployment, that’s for sure.

Wagthatdog on April 15, 2012 at 3:05 PM

I think the more pragmatic center “Clinton Democrats” are starting to have second thoughts about Obama, particularly the ones who understand economics.

Bill Clinton (and Newt Gingrich) worked toward CUTTING capital gains and dividend taxes and the result was an explosion of tax revenue that then resulted in budget surpluses. I believe they view Obama’s efforts to increase capital gains and dividend taxes by allowing tax cuts to expire with alarm. They understand that allowing these tax cuts to expire will reduce revenues and increase deficits.

I also believe that this is exactly what Obama WANTS to happen, too. The reason is that the things Obama doesn’t like such as defense spending are considered “discretionary spending” that can be cut or scaled back. The things Obama DOES like such as entitlement programs are considered mandatory spending. So he can’t campaign directly for cutting defense budgets but he CAN campaign for things he knows will increase deficits and RESULT in cutting defense budgets.

The way around this is to treat entitlement spending like any other kind of spending and cut it right along with the rest.

But the more important point is, I believe the center Clinton Democrats are just “going through the motions” providing only obligatory support for Obama. It is obvious their hearts aren’t in it this time around. I think you are going to see a lot of “damning with faint praise” going on.

Look, Obama’s only campaign strategy so far as been to heckle Romney. That’s it. He has nothing. No record, no plan, and he will have no Congress if re-elected.

Take not care, Mister Ed. Next January production will shoot through the roof, thanks to President Romney and a GOP House and Senate.

Just you wait, Henry Higgins, just you wait.

I would suggest everyone listen to Larry Kudlow’s radio show from yesterday 4/14:

Absolutely some critical material in there on this very topic.

Want to help defeat Obama? Don’t purchase ANYTHING you don’t need until the end of October – economic data too late to help him. Delay purchases of clothes, durable goods, automobiles – everything.

The obligatory opening question from a journalist would’ve been, “So, since today is April 15th… have you filed your taxes yet?”

Midas on April 15, 2012 at 3:46 PM

He’s clueless on his personal taxes (even when someone else does them for him), he was clueless about the shennanigans going on at Wall Street when he was the head of the NY Fed. And he’s clueless as the Sec of the Treasury. All this douchebag is good for is regurgitating the Admoinistration’s talking points. It will be good to see him sent home in January.

So this brings about another question. If the term, “African American” originated in 1987 why does BHO’s 1961 birth certificate say “African American” instead of N e g r o (the term used in 1961)?

Bambi on April 15, 2012 at 2:34 PM

Because Obama’s putative father was African.

I get that, but why didn’t they use Kenyan American? Africa is a continent not a race, and certainly not the country of origin for Barack Obama Sr.

I believe Obama was born in Hawaii, but the term, African American as any kind of description wasn’t used culturally till much later, and then it was a PC term. As I stated before Africa is a continent not a race, there are Caucasian Africans.

Sapience on April 15, 2012 at 10:08 PM

why does BHO’s 1961 birth certificate say “African American” instead of N e g r o (the term used in 1961)?

Because the birth certificate that has been shown is NOT the ORIGINAL birth certificate. It is the one you get when you lose the original and must get a new copy. So the original details are in a database. Maybe the database has “N” or “Negro” for race but the software that prints those out these days probably changes it to “African American”.

But I *am* curious who this Harrison J Bounel person might be.

crosspatch on April 15, 2012 at 11:49 PM

The birth certificate that has been shown isn’t the original. It is the sort you get if you lost the original and ask for a replacement. The database might have the original race but that might be translated by the software when it is printed out these days.

I’m interested in who Harrison J Bounel is.
