Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on April 12, 2012 by Allahpundit

“A moment of silence, please, for a talking point that was taken too soon. The ‘war on women’ began its life in a February 2011 House speech about abortion. After a short life as a Democratic hobby horse, it died during the second week of April 2012. The cause of death: Rosengate, the latest and least explicable battle in the Umbrage Wars…

“As Romney and the RNC fought back, Democrats started to choke. In her fateful CNN appearance, right before she evaluated Ann Romney’s economics cred, Hilary Rosen begged the media to ‘just get rid of this word, ‘war on women.” After all, ‘the Obama campaign does not use it, President Obama does not use it — this is something that the Republicans are accusing people of using.’

“On Thursday, as the Rosen saga unfolded, DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse echoed her plea for peace. ‘I’m not a fan of the term,’ he said in an interview. ‘I mean, I’m sure I’ve probably used it. We all fall into these easy vernaculars … but we in the DNC have not been running a campaign based on the term ‘war on Women.’ That’s a myth cooked up by Republicans.’”

***

“Let’s be clear: Raising children full time is work. Being the spouse who runs the household full time is work. And it’s work that society often doesn’t value or treat with respect. In addition to running their homes and supporting their husband’s endeavors, stay-at-home moms are often the people who keep the school board running, do the volunteering for community activities, and even support the women in their neighborhood who work outside the home. When I was a child, and my archaeologist mother had to work late, guess who watched me? Yep, the stay-at-home mom next door.

“The idea that ‘women’s work’ is indeed valuable to society has long been a contention of feminists, so it’s strange to see a prominent Democrat lash out a stay-at-home mother and wife in this fashion. Feminists have agitated for as long as I can remember for society to value and respect the ‘unpaid work’ that women do in the home and society. The fact that Ann Romney doesn’t struggle financially doesn’t make what she does any less valuable. I suspect there is a lot about how she has contributed to her community that we don’t know.”

***

“Growing up in Michigan, Mrs. Romney pitched in at her father’s company, Jered Industries in Troy, as she has recalled on the campaign trail in February. The firm manufactured heavy machinery for the maritime industry.

“As an adult, Mrs. Romney turned her talents as a chef into something of a small business in Massachusetts. She and a friend held cooking classes for local foodies, according to her son Josh, who described the sessions in a 2007 interview with The New York Times.

“Beyond that, Mrs. Romney has held a number of posts with Boston-area charities and advocacy groups. She was, for example, a director at Best Friends, an organization focused on inner-city girls, and a volunteer instructor at the Mother Caroline Academy, a multicultural middle school in Boston.”

***

“The data, though, don’t support the impression that staying at home is a luxury. A detailed 2010 study by two Census Bureau sociologist, in fact, found the opposite: While stay-at-home motherhood has become less common over time, the women who stay at home are increasingly those whose low education means they can’t earn enough money to making working outside the home worthwhile.

“‘The main effect showed that compared with 1969, women with less than a high school degres were more likely o be a state-at-home mother than women with a high school degree,’ the study’s authors, Rose Kreider and Diana Elliott, wrote, a trend that ‘accentuated in later decades.’…

“‘People think stay-at-home moms are the rich folks,’ Romney supporter Penny Nancy said on a conference call with reporters today. The Romney campaign is betting that perception is wrong, and the statistics back them up.”

***

“‘I think the war on women is real,’ Biden said in an interview he sat for with MSNBC’s Ed Schultz as part of a campaign trip to New Hampshire to talk up the Buffett rule. ‘And, look, I tell you where it’s going to intensify: the next president of the United States is going to get to name one and possibly two or more members of the Supreme Court.’”

Cindy Munford on April 13, 2012 at 12:59 AM

Not sure if I can but.. ok, you asked..

I was talking to the lady next door, our kids went to the same bus stop, and she would watch ours for an hour here or there, and we’d watch her’s in return when necessary.

The day before the kids during the night decided to come knocking on our bedroom door.. not good at the time.. Yelled for them to get back to bed, but they were younger and stubborn, thinking Mom and Dad might have a snack they could have.. after some annoyed back and forths through the locked door.. I got dressed and went over to open it.. and caught my son laying on the floor trying to peek under.. I knew he couldn’t have seen us, the angle was wrong.. plus he couldn’t see anything but the floor much..

Anyhow, as I was talking to her, my son pipes up..

“daddy,?”

yes son.. what?

Last night when I knocked on your door it was locked, why?”

Another time son.. I’m talking to Suzy here.. an.,

“Daddy, why was your and Mommy’s bed moving?”

I was struck speechless…. a first for me.. and as he started to repeat the question I said son… shut up.. and seeing he wasn’t gonna.. I just reached out and gave him a bear hug.. squeezing his face into my chest to stop the question…

The neighbor after turning red too, ended up busting up laughing… her daughter was younger, and she did say..”try a towel on the floor, they like to try and peek”…

good advice when you have a small house and kids..

terribly curious kids..

They didn’t agree on the wars, I am pretty sure that MB4 was a Vietnam vet worried that that fiasco would be played out again. hawkdriver probably sparred with him but wouldn’t have a problem with their differing opinions.

I hope MB4 is still around. I happened to agree with him about the wars, but they each made good points.

bazil9 on April 13, 2012 at 1:28 AM

Cyndy, I’m trying to help uncommon sense post short linkys, what have I written in these instructions that’s wrong.

1. Be on your comment page you wish to comment on.
2 In a separate window or tab open up the page you wish to link.
3 Stroke copy the url link in the address header of the page you want to copy.
4 Go back to your comment page having already typed in your comment or if not type in your comment. High light the word or words you want the link to be.
5 Just above your comment box is a little button with a blue word that says link. Click that
6 A link box will pop up, it will have a http: already in it. just delete it.
7 Paste in the url you had copied into that link box hit okay.

Bmore on April 13, 2012 at 1:29 AM

Ok, Bmore that didn’t work

uncommon sense on April 13, 2012 at 1:24 AM

Go to the page you want to link and highlight the url address just like normal. Right click and select copy. Then go back to the page where you want to embed the link, presumably the comment box here at HA. Highlight the text you want to become your link. Clink the blue link box above. A prompt box should appear. If it does, right click your mouse and hit paste and then OK. Try that.

Yeah me too. Chrome is a bit different.
Bmore on April 13, 2012 at 1:43 AM

Chrome is too snoopy for my taste, a better privacy-friendly Chromium based browser is Iron.

I’ll give it a try. I just use Chrome for the reading FF for the commenting. I like Chrome because its the quickest on my Intel mac.

Have you always been so smart and funny?

cynccook on April 13, 2012 at 1:47 AM

Aw, shucks, Ma’am.

I been here since either late ’06 or early ’07. Off and on.

jaime on April 13, 2012 at 1:53 AM

Don’t you have to deal with it on every new site you visit, to adjust settings?

whatcat on April 13, 2012 at 1:45 AM

Nope.

Basenjis aren’t for everyone and maybe it helps that ours are mixed. We use to have Dalmatians and people would tell us how crazy the breed is. Not ours and not these guys but we are very calm people. That said we have water squirt bottles strategically placed all over the house but find we are using them less and less. If we can just get out of the duck/goose poop being considered fine dining, we will be golden.

Why no short linky? Love ELP.

Thanks for the link.

At the moment, Chrome and Safari do not come with any feature to disable the HTML Meta auto-refresh tag. We will update this as soon as it become available.

Well, that sucks. I thought I just wasn’t looking for the correct option in the preferences settings.

Unfortunately, Chrome runs way better than Firefox under Linux. Firefox has become very ill-mannered of late, spawning a couple of zombie processes and sucking up tremendous amounts of memory to the point that it is slow, bloated, and really screws with computer performance. Have encountered the same thing on Mrs. Federalist’s iMac as well. So, she is using Safari and I’m using Chrome.

Bmore on April 13, 2012 at 1:54 AM

No but I’ve lived in the south (FL & TX) off and on for a number of years. Pittsburgh, originally.

What’s the last FF version you tried? I haven’t tested to see the exact difference in milliseconds, but latest alpha version, which is 14.0, comes up immediately on my screen like Chrome does – there is definitely a noticeable speed increase from prior versions.

Obviously, it shouldn’t be acting the way you describe. Have you looked at any of the FF help sites for a possible explanation?
