Democrats declare war on women? Update: Frequent White House visitor?

posted at 8:41 am on April 12, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

By the time Allahpundit included this clip in his QOTD post, DNC adviser and Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen’s attack on Ann Romney had already raised eyebrows.  By the time the clocks clicked past midnight, her remarks had become so infamous that Barack Obama’s campaign leaders had to go on Twitter to toss Rosen under the proverbial bus.  Rosen scoffed at the notion that a stay-at-home mom of five, who also happens to be battling MS and has survived cancer, has any insight into economic concerns of women in America:

Rosen later wrote a “clarification” at the Huffington Post expressing her admiration for Ann Romney’s “grit” in dealing with her illnesses, but the damage had already been done. Incredibly, Rosen later complained that Ann Romney “didn’t answer my follow up tweet to her! Which I thought was respectful and sincere.”  What was Rosen’s idea of “respectful and sincere”?  How about this: “I am raising children too. But u do know that most young american women have to earn a living AND raise their kids don’t u?”

Yeah, it’s Ann Romney’s fault for not replying to such a “respectful” riposte, huh?  Rosen’s the real victim here.

The Romney campaign blasted Rosen as an “Obama adviser” (she’s tied to the DNC, not the Obama campaign) and called this “their new ‘kill Ann’ strategy and in the process insul[t] hard-working moms.”  And that had Team Obama worried enough for a couple of heavy hitters to take to Twitter late last night to do damage control.  David Axelrod, Obama’s closest adviser, tweeted: “Also Disappointed in Hilary Rosen’s comments about Ann Romney. They were inappropriate and offensive.”  Jim Messina, who runs the Obama 2012 campaign, demanded an apology from Rosen: “I could not disagree with Hilary Rosen any more strongly. Her comments were wrong and family should be off limits. She should apologize.”

It’s too late for that; the mask has already slipped.  Rosen has delivered the Left’s honest opinion about women who choose to stay home to raise their children, and unless the DNC distances themselves from her, we can assume that’s the official Democratic Party position.  If Democrats wanted to see Republicans unite behind Mitt Romney, they picked the best possible strategy to make it happen by declaring war on Ann Romney and stay-at-home moms.

Update: Democrats were quick to insist that Rosen has no role at the White House, but Jim Geraghty reports that the rebuttal seems to be more of an issue of semantics:

White House visitor logs indicate that “Hilary Rosen” visited the White House thirty-five times.

Gen. David Petraeus, head of our efforts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the current CIA director, nine times.

Meanwhile, see if you can guess who said this in 2008?

“You know essentially, you’ve taken on sort of the most sympathetic person in the candidate’s realm, the wife, who is taking care of the children, supporting the husband, doing everything she can because she loves him … [it's a] stupid strategy.”

You get three guesses, and the first two don’t count.

Instapundit had a good observation about Romney this morning. He pointed out that Democratic VP John Edwards had been lionized by the MSM a few years ago for pretending to stand by his wife when she was diagnosed with cancer. (Of course, as we all found out later, Edwards was carrying on an affair behind his sick wife’s back the whole time). But Mitt Romney has actually stood by his wife (for many years) through both cancer and multiple sclerosis, with barely a mention of it in the press.

AZCoyote on April 12, 2012 at 9:18 AM

I want to second this point. As a single man, it is amazing to me that Mitt Romney has stood by his wife for FORTY THREE YEARS. Not a hint of scandal. So we have every other scumbag politician cheating on their spouses, Bobby Petrino even this week..

yet Mitt: a very attractive man, rich, powerful..

never strayed or “traded up” to be with a younger and prettier girl as he got older.

He stayed by her as she battled age, cancer and multiple sclerosis. And he never brags about it. To me that says a lot about the character of the man.

Compare and contrast with one Newton Gingrich!!

H. Rosen is a PR expert????? I hope her clients see what a good job she did on this topic.
Qzsusy on April 12, 2012 at 12:13 PM

No kidding! Jennifer Rubin makes that point here.

First, Obama, as a conservative pundit put it, just went a long way toward solidifying Romney’s base, especially among social conservatives who loathe elites who look down on stay-at-home moms.

Second, it feeds into the cliche that liberals love humanity but hate people. In this case they love womanhood but treat their own employees and conservative women like dirt.

Third, the “war on women” just became Romney’s vehicle for narrowing the gender gap, especially among women with children.

Fourth, this points to the absurdity of Obama’s approach to the campaign — nonstop negativity and gimmicks. When one goes awry, what’s he got to say?

Fifth, there will be a new term in politics: A Rosen. That is a gaffe of epic proportions that is magnified by the gaffer’s own stubbornness and insistence on digging deeper.

Sixth, Hilary Rosen, who makes her living in PR (irony alert), better find other work. She’s really terrible at her job, if this is any indication.

et cetera….

1. Develop birth control
2. Enact Great Society
3. Allow abortion
4. Earned Income Tax Credit
5. STD vaccines/cures (AIDS $$$$)
6. Daycare complete with subsidies

Results:
1. Sex with no “punishing” babies
2. $$ for moms who had those pesky babies anyway
3. Easy out for those moms who don’t want pesky babies
4. Extra $$ for those moms who did want their pesky babies
5. Help for those whose “punishments” were diseases
6. Respite for working moms who chose to have other working women tend to those babies.

And last, little need for men to hang around. Uncle Sam will be there.

Headline: After insult Romney hits back with lighting speed
By: Byron York

The Romney campaign jumped on Rosen’s remarks with a speed that no Republican campaign has shown in the past. First, campaign staffers sent out tweets hitting Rosen. “Obama adviser Hilary Rosen goes on CNN to debut their new ‘kill Ann’ strategy, and in the process insults hard-working moms,” said top Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom. The campaign then sent out word that Rosen, who has worked for the Democratic National Committee and other Democratic organizations, is now part of the same firm, SKDKnickerbocker, as Anita Dunn, a prominent member of the Obama circle. And then came word that Rosen had visited the White House at least 35 times, according to publicly-available White House visitors logs. And then that Rosen attended last month’s state dinner at the White House.

I am raising children too. But u do know that most young american women have to earn a living AND raise their kids don’t u?

Here’s the dirty little secret… it’s EASIER for a woman to raise kids and work a job than it is for her to be a stay-at-home mom. I am the husband of a stay-at-home mom and I can tell you that it’s the hardest job you could possibly have. My wife works much harder than I do and is under far more stress. It would be far easier for her to drop the kids off at daycare and got a job.

Shump on April 12, 2012 at 8:58 AM

Hear! Hear! I had a career. One that required many 16-hour days, lots of travel and oooodles of responsibility. I had a child at 35 and quit. I had another 2 1/2 years later. After they both started school, I went back to work full time with a job that had regular hours. Of the three? Staying home was the most difficult by far.

I used to get a kick out of the feminists who argued that they spent “quality” time with their kids. I’d argue back that sometimes quality time involved a crisis where the child needed you for love or discipline. Those things are planned, like trips to the zoo.

Let’s see if Romney’s hit men can get out a video/commercial with this little gift of Democrat honesty on it—and the video should include the trips to the WH info and the fact that staying at home is sometimes the better choice economically. Child care for non-school age children is very expensive.

Dressage is a fairlyexpensive sport Ill give you that but im an amatuer dressage rider who is not rich and from my perspective the level she has achieved with MS is nothing short of inspirational and demonstrates her inner strength and determination to me. She is by all accounts an extremely gracious and very well liked person in the horse conmunity. No pretension, snobbiness, or elite attitude. The media may be able to use it against her and snark about her involement with horses but I think she can handle it. Im hoping she supports therapuetic riding because she gives lots of credit to horses for helping her deal with MS. I see it with the special olympic athletes we work with as well as para equestrians.

I have no doubt it’s a fine sport. And I have no doubt Ann Romney is a fine person. But she is – I’m sure at her own admission – a person of enormous wealth and privilege. I think it’s a stretch for her to align herself with stay at home moms. Kinda silly. But of course the Romney campaign will milk this for every last drop. What else do they have on this issue?
Everyone knows how money – if nothing else – makes things easier.
Much easier.
As much as she might be able, through her own experience, to imagine what hard work it might be to be a stay at home mom raising kids, she has not actually experienced that. Her tweet was opportunistic. As was Michelle Obama’s that followed.

I worry about this big time because Romney, himself, said that Obama was a nice guy who was just in over his head. All evidence points to the fact that Obama is a card-carrying socialist who started life wanting the violent overthrow of capitalism, but then converted to the “take over from the inside” school of revolution.

Also, in debates about political systems, Romney has yet to demonstrate anything but boilerplate knowledge. It also worries me A LOT that his favorite book is that awful thing by Scientology founder, Hubbard.

Finally, you people have won, yet you are still out beating back anyone who might, with reason or even a little respect, be pulled back. Circle the wagons and shoot your people in the back was Romney’s game plan and will remain in place going forward. The old etch-a-sketch reset works for moderates, but not for ABR’s? Figures. I’ve been involved in politics for almost 50 years and I’ve never seen the like.

Oh, and telling us all to shut up and leave? Romney’s against free speech too? Like Obama? No questioning The One or it’s outter darkness for sure.

She worked 60-80 hours a week for a few years, made a lot of money, paid off debt, and then decided it was not for her. That is the story of most big law associates. Very few stay more than a few years (whether by choice, or they get the hint that they wont make partner), and even less make partner.

So, I dont think there is anything sinister about her not working at Sidley Austin for more than a few years.

milcus on April 12, 2012 at 12:57 PM

I want to second this point. As a single man, it is amazing to me that Mitt Romney has stood by his wife for FORTY THREE YEARS. Not a hint of scandal.

He stayed by her as she battled age, cancer and multiple sclerosis. And he never brags about it. To me that says a lot about the character of the man.

AirForceCane on April 12, 2012 at 12:21 PM

Roger that.

My wife is a full time mom – I despise the “stay at home” moniker – and a lovely wife. I might make the money, but she makes the home and anyone who tries to weigh the two is a fool.

We give little credit to men who stand by their wives and families and far too much license to those who do not. In the end, the faithful men get the last laugh, because from the start we have the joy that eludes the unfaithful to their dying days.

Cricket624 on April 12, 2012 at 12:57 PM

I saw a tweet that sums it up the best:

Dems: Ann Romney, mother of 5, “has never worked a day in her life.” Sarah Palin, mother of 5, should “be at home with her children.”

And don’t fool yourselves — this was a coordinated, planned attack by the Obama camp (working for the DNC is working for Obama — he’s in charge of all the money). It has always been Obama’s M.O. to pretend to take the high ground (hence, Axlerod & Messina’s comments) while sending out his minions to do the dirty work. He did this continuously in 2008 — does no one remember his saying “family should be off limits” then sitting back & reaping the benefits of all the attacks on Palin’s children?

Furthermore, Obama himself started this meme last Friday when he reminded everyone, apropos of nothing, that when he & Michelle first had their children they didn’t have the “luxury” of Michelle staying home. Rosen’s statement is the logical workflow of this attack on Ann — to dismiss her as not being worthy of having an opinion on anything in this campaign because she is a rich, spoiled, out-of-touch b!tch who sits around eating bon bons. That’s their plan to take her down — while I’m glad to see it looks like it is backfiring so far, don’t take it lightly. I fully expect more attacks to come.

Dark Star on April 12, 2012 at 12:57 PM

Granted, she’s probably not an expert in Obamanomics, as the Romney household is not spending 40 percent more than it takes in, and accusing other people of being greedy for refusing to help pay their bills.

Makes sense. They realized they need money. Maybe some of these women will earn above the 49% rate of not paying taxes, and they can provide income for Obama to give to deadbeat single mother’s. Granted, if they work for Obama, they wont make as much as their male counter-parts for similar work, but they still might earn enough to pay their “fair share.” And then maybe these women might want insurance, and will demand free contraceptives and access to Planned Parenthood.

That logic is almost too painful to think through, but in Obama’s mind, it probably makes sense.

Yes they struggled as a young married couple and everything she says about what is important resonates with me. I hope they keep attacking her its backfiring. And by the way Ann Romney made good choices. She didnt have a baby out of wedlock, she graduated from highschool and college, she didnt choose to use drugs she choose a good man as a partner. She raised her children to be good citizens that have also made good choices. Im sick of hearing that successful people are somehow lucky as if making good choices in life doing the right thing and working hard have nothing to do with it.

If this is what theyve got lets discuss it. Its jobs its grocery bills its gas prices its rising insurance costs its the piling of debt on our children its attacking the place we choose to worship. I could care less if some partying college students get free birth control. As a matter of fact I worked my way through college and got a useful degree pay for your own dang birth control. For some reason the attitudes coming from the left have really gotten under my skin today. Im more fired up about getting this group of spinning lying overspending condescending destructive people out of power than ever

ldbgcoleman on April 12, 2012 at 1:21 PM

Rosen has delivered the Left’s honest opinion about women who choose to stay home to raise their children,

This is absolutely the opinion that the left has of SAHMs. I left a successful career as a research scientist at a pretty big biotech company to stay at home with my babies. Many of my liberal colleagues were horrible to me — especially the women. These were women who I thought were my close friends, but they transformed over night after I announced that I wouldn’t be coming off maternity leave. The remarks they made were so condescending and painful that I had to quit talking to these people. They used terms like “breeders” to describe couples with kids and compared staying at home with prostitution and collecting welfare.

I am pretty outgoing so I have made plenty of friends since then, but I know from first hand experience that this is what left wingers think of stay at home moms.

My understanding is that not only is she “unmanned,” she and her “partner” have subjected adopted children to their relationship. Hopefully the kids weren’t too far instilled with leftist anti-man, anti-family values and will not find themselves unable to interact with the opposite gender.

I suppose it’s better than an orphanage, but you don’t rate societal success on the option one tick above the lowest common denominator.

This is indisputable: He is taking on Obama hard. This has been the case for months. All one had to do was listen to his speeches in locales as far and wide as N.H., Nevada, Michigan. It’s possible you and others who make these claims didn’t hear them. Hot Air didn’t bother to cover them for the most part so it would have required broadening sources for information.

Last week he nailed O to the wall with his speech to the press (Karl in the Green Room covered this and tagged it “marvelous”). Yet despite all this evidence not a day goes by where I don’t hear commenters peddle the tall tale that he’s not taking on Obama.

Today katy the mean old lady sniped that she hasn’t heard from Mitt directly on the Rosen gaffe. Like, “This guy wants our vote. Maybe he should try earning it himself”. and “Actually, I was looking for MITT to take it to Obama. Not hs “team” or his wife”. This is an absurd and petulant complaint. Is Ann incapable of defending herself? Obviously not. It’s a team effort, and as I noted above with the Byron York link, the campaign responded with one proverbial grenade after another. If Mitt had responded and Ann had stayed silent, what would the response have been? He can’t win with those who harbor bitter feelings towards him. And surely you don’t deny this bitterness exists…

PS: As you are a commenter who makes things up out of whole cloth, and refuses to back up your spurious allegations. As such, it’s probably best that you avoid challenging me on substance. You can try to claim Mitt is not taking on Obama but you will only make a fool of yourself in the process as facts are not your friend.

I am pretty outgoing so I have made plenty of friends since then, but I know from first hand experience that this is what left wingers think of stay at home moms.

There are a few things at work here. First of all, the far left hates the institution of the family and tries to tear it down at every opportunity. Second, adults–both male and female–without children often have absolutely no concept for or sensitivity to the demands and emotions that go into being a parent.
And, third, liberalism is a mental disorder. Everything they do makes more sense when viewed through this prism.
