Obama: You know, when you think about it, the Buffett Rule is really more of a “Reagan Rule”

posted at 8:35 pm on April 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

Three days, three presidential speeches on this ridiculous gimmick. I can’t take much more, but there may be light at the end of the tunnel: O seems sluggish here, a sign that he’s tired and apt to give it a rest tomorrow or that he’s grown as bored with this subject as the rest of us. Sweet relief either way.

If you read this post, though, then you know instantly what he’s up to. If the goal is to frame Romney as a wingnut gone wild, then why stop at comparing him to Barry Goldwater? Why not claim that he and the rest of the GOP are actually far to the right of Ronald Reagan himself? And who cares if you have to take Reagan out of context to do it? Philip Klein:

If you translate Obama’s words, what he’s really saying is that he wants people to keep less of their hard-earned money so that additional money will be available for him to spend on welfare state programs and more Solyndras.

Obama’s failure to acknowledge this distinction was hammered home in the same speech, when he suggested renaming the Buffett Rule the “Reagan Rule.” His remarks followed up on a video clip posted by the liberal group ThinkProgress in which Reagan, in a 1985 speech on the tax code, told a story about an executive paying a lower tax rate than his secretary.

Yet Reagan told the story as part of a larger pitch for tax reform. Unlike Obama, Reagan was interested in targeting loopholes so that he could lower rates, to allow people to keep more of their own money.

“Lower, flatter tax rates will give Americans more confidence in the future,” Reagan said in the speech referenced by Obama. “It’ll mean if you work overtime or get a raise or a promotion or if you have a small business and are able to turn a profit, more of that extra income will end up where it belongs — in your wallets, not in Uncle Sam’s pockets.”

Needless to say, O’s not trying to close loopholes for the rich as a revenue offset to lower, flatter rates. He’s closing loopholes as a prelude to letting the Bush tax cuts on the rich expire, which is itself a prelude to letting the Bush tax cuts on the middle class expire once he and his party work up the nerve to have a talk with the public about what’s required to pay for a modern entitlement state. In fact, if it’s loopholes you’re worried about, raising rates is one of the worst ways to go about closing them. As the Journal notes, once lobbyists go to work on Congress, the Buffett Rule will become the Buffett Rule plus dozens of specific exemptions:

The Buffett tax would only make loopholes more valuable. The White House has already carved out one exception to its own Buffett rule: charitable donations. So a billionaire could avoid the 30% effective tax rate by giving away millions of dollars—say, the way Mitt Romney so generously does…

The Buffett rule is really nothing more than a sneaky way for Mr. Obama to justify doubling the capital gains and dividend tax rate to 30% from 15% today. That’s the real spread-the-wealth target. The problem is that this is a tax on capital that is needed for firms to grow and hire more workers. Mr. Obama says he wants an investment-led recovery, not one led by consumption, but how will investment be spurred by doubling the tax on it?

The only investment and hiring the Buffett rule is likely to spur will be outside the United States—in China, Germany, India, and other competitors with much more investment-friendly tax regimes.

Bad economics, but luckily economics aren’t the point. The point is reelection, which is why this is coming up for a vote in the Senate that’ll surely fail but which will hand the Democrats a few more days of talking about rich people like Mitt Romney robbing you blind. Mind-bogglingly ironic exit quotation: “If you don’t have a record to run on, then … you make a big election about small things.”

It’s like Reagan only in Ocopycat’s dreams, but, as I posted earlier at the Green Room with one minor modification, I call it:

The “trickle down” Obamanomics Buh-fake

It starts with the 30% capital gains tax on the evil rich meant to appease the lefty dumbmass 99% occupiers merely to fleece them into voting for him. Then after he’s re-elected and has a little more “flexibility”–POOF! Executive Order and the 30% tax now applies to everyone. But he won’t stop there. He’ll keep raising that tax: 50%, 70%, until he gets to 100%. Before you know it, Ogreedy will have us all indebted to the very gubmint that we fund, that supposedly works for us, and then we’ll all be victims of a back-doored indentured servitude–in perpetuity! It’ll be the dark ages all over again.

According to a study by the Associated Press, the Buffett Rule would bring in approximately $31 billion over the next 11 years…assuming that all things remain unchanged, including the behaviour and habits of the “evil rich.”

Obama’s Buffett Rule: Would bring in $7.7 million per DAY, ceterus paribus.

Obama deficit spends: $4.3 billion per DAY.

Resist We Much on April 11, 2012 at 9:44 PM

Here is the problem if the Buffet rule were really implemented it will hurt the states that collect a higher rate of tax on that same income, because those taxpayers will finally have to go to a no income tax state to keep the same overall taxation rate that they have now. In MA, the tax on interest dividends capital gains (?) is 12.5% There is ONLY investment tax in NH, so people around here would not go there, and another state has only investment taxes. A lot of states have capital gains taxes, which would compete as well. So people would move with their feet to get away from the high investment taxes and capital gains taxes.

I bet Mr. Buffet would move too, he owes a billion dollars in taxes he doesn’t want to pay. And look at what people did when NYC raised taxes on upper income people, they left and the revenues went down even further. In NYC they have state tax, federal taxes and local NYC taxes. Plus school taxes.

Barry is known for using past President’s when it suits his purposes. One day he’s FDR, the next he’s Lincoln, now he’s Reagan, this is just moronic…I think Barry’s re-election committee needs a break.

I’m your older brother UH-1H. I invented crew chiefing :)

Hey, I may have run into you back in the day. I had a 1000 hours flying UH-1H’s, before switching to Cobras and later 64′s. After all the high tech Apache stuff, I still rather fly an old Huey.

Yep. It’s’ called “breathing their own exhaust” and they are very good at it.

They seal the doors in a room, eat frijoles and have a group “dutch oven”. And then stand in awe of their work product.

Alright fellow GI. If you made it to Apaches you must have made the Army a career. I remember Ft. Rucker. One of our pilots in VN was given orders back to Rucker after his combat tour and started crying, “what did I do wrong?”

He’s not worthy to even wipe the boots of Ronald Reagan.

Boots and Horse riding with clearing brush as a hobby—–Reagan

Mom jeans and riding a bike with a helmet on when you’re riding a fat tired 1940′s that breaks 5 mph—Obama

PappyD61 on April 11, 2012 at 10:18 PM

I got into a HUGE debate with another student about this stupid rule. She doesn’t even like Obama but she thinks that the rich need to pay “their fair share”

I explained to her that one percent of the population pay 25% of the taxes and she responded that “They still have too much money” and she thought they needed to be redistributed.

I asked her what would happen when we redistributed that money? Then what? Are the rich really to blame for the crap we are in? She actually agreed that the government was spending too much and that was a big portion of the problem BUT she STILL thought that the rich were too rich. I asked her what would taxing the rich do? How would giving MORE money to the government help if the government isn’t spending it right anyways? She said she didn’t know but she didn’t like the idea of giving the wealthy tax breaks so they could reinvest to provide more jobs because she said “Well not all of them will reinvest, some of them will just keep it for themselves. Besides even if they DO invest their money it won’t be for others but just so they can get richer.” I then replied “So? Who cares if they are spending money to make more for themselves if they are creating jobs so that OTHER people can make money for themselves! Are you saying we should punish people for doing well?”

She didn’t know what to say to that so she responded with this argument. “Well I think some rich people are just A–holes and they shouldn’t have that much money.” And then cited the infamous story of the Banker who tipped $1.33, of course I had to crush that story because we all know it was fake

I told her that there are going to be a–holes in every group, rich, poor, black, white, young and old not matter where you look so should we tax all of them because of it too?

After that she shut up and decided to switch the subject to puppies.

Yeah, 24 years went by fast. Rucker is not that bad :-).

1. I can’t believe he can say the Reagan thing with a straight face.

2. I can’t believe audiences can hear it without laughing.

crosspatch on April 11, 2012 at 9:49 PM

His audiences can hear it without laughing, because he targets audiences who are the most clueless among us. They don’t think critically, they aren’t objective, so they just go along with whatever they’re told. The key for him is to not let on that he has more contempt for them that he does for even the “one percent.” They are truly useful idiots, and whenever he happens to push them aside, they’ll still never figure it out. Case it point: the women who are getting shortchanged on his administration’s payroll.

Bama just wants more and more people to become dependent on the government, that’s all. And if the government goes broke, and the economy tanks, so be it. It’s obviously Bush’s fault anyway. Then he can construct his marxist lenninist utopia out of the ashes of this once great country. That is the second term.

Obama will be saying that Friedrich von Hayek was his real inspiration for Obamacare. (Barack thought “The Road To Serfdom” was a prescription.)

Slicks. The cool guys were across the swamp. Every chance we got our pilots would sneak up and blow them cavalry hats off with the rotor wash.
