Allen West: I’ve “heard” 80 House Democrats are members of the Communist Party

posted at 12:46 pm on April 11, 2012 by Tina Korbe

This story has already gotten a lot of comment action in Headlines, but, given all the talk about Allen West for vice president, it seems to merit a full-fledged post, as well.

At a town hall event in Florida yesterday, West warned his constituents that he’s “heard” that as many as 80 House Democrats are members of the Communist Party. He didn’t name names, but the House has just 190 Democrats, so, if West is right, that means about 42 percent of House Ds consider themselves communists.

In this post, I want to explore two questions: (1) How plausible is it that such a sizable percentage of Democrats in the House of Representatives really prefer a centrally planned economy to a free market economy? and (2) Was it politically savvy or politically stupid of Allen West to make this statement?

The answer to the first question is easier than the second. West’s “80″ number might seem a little high, but it’s not hard to believe that, out of the many democratic socialists or social democrats in Congress, at least a fraction would go so far as to say they favor outright central planning and control of the means of production. Others might not definitively think a communist scheme of social organization is optimal but would consider it somehow preferable to democratic capitalism.

To answer the second question, we have to acknowledge that the word “communism” still has a very negative connotation to the average American, even as some of the ideas that fuel or lead to communism (e.g. the mind of man is all there is, history progresses linearly and inexorably toward collectivism, etc.) have become surprisingly widespread. Consequently, even those who admit the appeal of communist ideas or acknowledge themselves to have been influenced by those ideas will shy away from the actual label of “communist.”

It has puzzled me for some time that socialists and communists are so unwilling to call themselves by name — but, the more I read of history, the more I understand. My generation might not understand what communism really is, but we have some underlying sense that it has been broadly rejected by free and thinking peoples and we really wouldn’t have much appetite to hear ideas from someone who outright identified himself with a failed theory of social organization. Like any young people, though, we’re susceptible to making ourselves our own gods — so we’re still susceptible to the allure of the ideas of communism.

We also have to acknowledge that the average American — including the average young American — thinks that nobody today would actually embrace the failed theories that led to the bloodiest century in human history. We can conceive of anti-capitalism and crony capitalism, of a big-government approach to the solution of all problems — but outright socialism or communism? That seems like a stretch. That means that, at the same time that socialists and communists are unwilling to claim their ideas, opponents of those ideas are unwilling to label socialists and communists as such for fear of acquiring the “extreme” or “out-of-touch” label.

That’s the risk Allen West has brought upon himself with his remarks. We’ve seen West risk the “extreme” label more than once. The most ready example of his bravery is in his unflinching elucidations of what does and does not constitute racism. His past teaches us to expect that he’s unconcerned about whether these remarks earn him the label “out-of-touch.” (Incidentally, liberals can’t accuse him of fear-mongering in this instance unless they’re willing to concede that there is something in communism to fear. Then again, I suppose they would argue that it’s not that there is something in communism to fear so much as there is a common perception that there is something in communism to fear.)

At any rate, it probably wasn’t politically savvy of West to say this if he’s interested to win the VP nod. Mitt Romney has shown every sign of wanting to moderately defend conservative ideas and West doesn’t often moderate his rhetoric. It was savvy, though, if he’s looking primarily to solidify his reputation as a heedless-of-the-consequences speaker of the truth, a man who calls ‘em as he sees ‘em.

Update: According to this tweet, a spokesperson for Allen West said he was referring to the Progressive Caucus when he said 80 members of the House are communists. Meanwhile, a reader e-mailed me to note that it is beyond any kind of dispute that a number of House Democrats are members of the The Democratic Socialists of America. In 2009, DSA released the names of 70 such Democrats, many of whom still serve in the House.

They stole the terms liberal and progressive and s/b mocked for it.

See the new sharia in Afghanistan, just signed by Karzai and the Taliban, by which Obama and Hillary stand. See the Muzzie Brotherhood, which Obama, Ms. Lindsey and McCain support, finance, and etc.

West certainly could have been smarter about it. But it is also incredibly frustrating to watch many who claim to be conservatives surrender so easily because they don’t like how the message is packaged. Instead conceding the point use West’s comments as a jumping off point to hammer home the fact that far too many in Congress do pursue a centralized solution to everything under the sun.

You’ve lost your credibility with that statement.

Democratic Socialists of America helped establish the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) in 1991 and continues to work closely with the latter to this day. Virtually every CPC member also belongs to DSA.

In 1998, WorldNetDaily (WND) published a two-part series of articles titled “Congress’ Red Army Caucus”… which exposed the close association between DSA and CPC. At that time, DSA hosted the CPC website. Shortly after the WND revelations, CPC established its own website under the auspices of Congress. Meanwhile, DSA scrubbed its own website to remove evidence of its ties to CPC. Among the items removed from the site were the lyrics to such songs as the following:

* “The Internationale,” the worldwide anthem of Communism and socialism

* “Red Revolution,” sung to the tune of “Red Robin” (This song includes such lyrics as: “When the Red Revolution brings its solution along, along, there’ll be no more lootin’ when we start shootin’ that Wall Street throng.…”)

* “Are You Sleeping, Bourgeoisie?” (The lyrics of this song include: “Are you sleeping? Are you sleeping? Bourgeoisie, Bourgeoisie. And when the revolution comes, We’ll kill you all with knives and guns, Bourgeoisie, Bourgeoisie.”)

BoxHead1 on April 11, 2012 at 2:08 PM

Consequently, even those who admit the appeal of communist ideas or acknowledge themselves to have been influenced by those ideas will shy away from the actual label of “communist.”

Words are all the Left has. If a word has a negative connotation they’ll shy away from it (“it’s the message!”). The perfect example is the toxicity of the word “liberal.” So much negativity came to be associated with that word that the Left (with the help of the MSM) succesfully “rebranded” themselves as “progressive.” Right now it’s a positive word (even has the word “progress” as its root!), but rest assured that when it becomes as toxic as “liberal” (and it will), the Left will rebrand themselves again.

They honestly feel it’s not the philosophy that’s the problem. They think it’s all in the “messaging.” “If President Obama just gives his thirty-seventh speech on the subject, everyone will love it.”

Same thing with “communist.” It has a negative connotation because it was a bloody, poisonous, philosophy best left to the ash heap of history. But to the Left it wasn’t that bad, just needs to be “rebranded” and everyone will love it.

Lol, it’s extreme to tell any kind of truth in politics. Hey SS is going to bankrupt us, Republicans want to throw old ladies off the cliff. We need to cut back on entitlements, Republicans want to starve mothers and children, minorites at that. I am tired of the wusses yapping away using the word extreme. Extreme is a 16 trillion dollar debt, 1.65 trillion dollar defecit and continuous lies compounded everyday by the most powerful man in the world.

This is “Radical”

When you have the leader of the Dem party and the President of the US making statements like this about trying capitalism failed.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2012/04/11/obama_on_free_markets_we_tried_it_its_not_like_we_did_not_try.html

If you cannot identify the enemy and call them out you cannot fight them. West knows this he is military. The dems say insane things about how repubs wish to kill old people, abuse kids, ect…but we cannot call blatant socialist what they are. We cannot call out a party pushing a form of government that has failed in absolutely every nation/people who ever dared attempt it.

When will it be PC to push back and call them out? Do we have to wait for the end result when we are either Venezuela or extreme side Norks.

The dems and their radical base will never see the error in their ways. Look at O as his crew today they are not blaming the rapant insane spending and polices that in one generation has brought the most powerful nation in the world to its knees, NO of course not its the bush tax cuts fault. 10X the bush tax cuts couldn’t dig us out of this whole.

C-Low on April 11, 2012 at 2:11 PM

Yes, it’s absolutely, indisputably true that a high percentage of Democrats are Socialists (see Tina’s list). But words have meaning and to use the phrase “Communist Party” is a regrettable error.

We’ve just gone through a month of hysteria because Rush called Fluke a slut – an idiotic move which transformed an issue we were winning (religious liberty) into a win for the Dems. It does not matter that he apologized for this blunder – the damage was done.

Now we can look forward to the further demonizing of the Tea Party as we are portrayed as agents of Joe McCarthy who accuse Democrats of being card-carrying Communist Party members. This is a distraction we do not need. Those of you who are congratulating West for this impolitic statement are naive – to put it in the kindest possible terms. Keep in mind that anytime O is labeled a “Socialist” the Dems get hysterical and/or laugh at us. It’s the Alinksy way and it’s unlikely we can win this P.R. war.

Whittaker Chambers, the man whose own religious conversion made him a witness to one of the terrible traumas of our time, the Hiss-Chambers case, wrote that,

The crisis of the Western world exists to the degree in which the West is indifferent to God, the degree to which it collaborates in communism’s attempt to make man stand alone without God.

And then he said,

For Marxism-Leninism is actually the second-oldest faith, first proclaimed in the Garden of Eden with the words of temptation, “Ye shall be as gods.”

The Western world can answer this challenge, he wrote, “but only provided that its faith in God and the freedom He enjoins is as great as communism’s faith in Man.”

I believe we shall rise to the challenge. I believe that communism is another sad, bizarre chapter in human history whose last — last pages even now are being written. I believe this because the source of our strength in the quest for human freedom is not material, but spiritual. And because it knows no limitation, it must terrify and ultimately triumph over those who would enslave their fellow man. For in the words of Isaiah:

“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increased strength… But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary…”

Yes, change your world. One of our Founding Fathers, Thomas Paine, said, “We have it within our power to begin the world over again.” We can do it, doing together what no one church could do by itself.

God bless you and thank you very much.

We hold our Conservative Congressman to precise language but the WH has Carney and the legacy media to tell us what the POTUS meant.

Well with the Democrat Romney now our nominee the Republican Party is actually the Democrat Party. Far more liberal than the Democrat Party in 1960. The Democrat Party is the Communist Party with the Communist for life Obama President.

By the way Shria Law is Communist by nature. Hardly exclusive.

Cindy Munford on April 11, 2012 at 2:37 PM

Communism entails the outright ownership of ALL means of production – every farm, factory, and shop in America – by the dictatorship of the proletariat. To be considered a communist, this is what you have to advocate.

ernesto on April 11, 2012 at 1:01 PM

According to Dialectic Materialism the dictatorship of the proletariat, or communism, must be achieved in steps.
The first step is the destruction of capitalism by public control of the means of production. Another way of putting it is, the means of production are privately owned but controlled by the government. This is fascism.
Fascism must then give way to socialism which is public (government) ownership of the means of production.
From this flows the abolition of the concept of property ownership and “the withering away of the state”, giving rise to the dictatorship of the proletariat. This, finally, is the realization of the utopian dream of communism.

Barack Obama is a red diaper baby, raised from birth and mentored in youth and adolescence to strive for the primacy of communism. The are many in Congress who are clearly communists as well. Not openly advocating the abolition of property (which some of the worst of them have done) doesn’t make them any less communist than Marx or Lenin. Marxians know that the dialectic must “progress” first. The first and second steps, which overlap, are not yet complete.
Currently in America the dominant ideology is fascism. Progressivism is the driving force behind it. The Democrat party operates wholly as a fascist entity and the Republican party leadership is fascist. The only reason the dialectic hasn’t “progressed” to socialism is because the Republican party still has an Americanist (capitalist) faction which has been strengthened by the TEA party movement. That and the fact that there are still too many people alive who are old enough not to have been fully indoctrinated in progressivism.

Dr Evil on April 11, 2012 at 2:00 PM

Small “l” libertarian GOP, actually.

Now, do you have any evidence that 80 members of the HoR are members of the Communist Party? Because I’m pretty damned sure Allen West has no evidence to that effect. And if he does not, I’d like to know from whom he heard that they there are, and why that fool believed them.

Oh look at what an out-of-the closet communist says: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0412/75037.html

“I just think it’s an absurd way to cast a shadow over his colleagues. It’s kind of a sad ploy,” Libero Della Piana, a vice-chairman of the national Communist Party, “It’s just guilt by association taken to an extreme,” he told POLITICO.

Meanwhile, a reader e-mailed me to note that it is beyond any kind of dispute that a number of House Democrats are members of the The Democratic Socialists of America. In 2009, DSA released the names of 70 such Democrats, many of whom still serve in the House.

How plausible is it that such a sizable percentage of Democrats in the House of Representatives really prefer a centrally planned economy to a free market economy?

Pick up one of today’s entirely worthless college level textbooks written by people who vote Democrat, or take a stroll through one of your local major university campus and take a look at flyers on bulletin boards for classes taught by folks who vote Democrat.

Then you’ll have your answer.

That’s who I thought he was referring to. The progressive wing of the democrat party are in the leadership. It’s a case of the tail leading the dog. The reason they suffered such seat losses in November 2010 was because of the Progressive – Socialist Democrat agenda. The blue dog democrat was almost wiped out in the south.

Kos had a post with a graphic targeting Gifford’s reelection because she didn’t tow progressive caucus member, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s line.

My Congresswoman voted against Nancy Pelosi and now is dead to me.

How many socialists sit in Congress today?

‘Progressive Caucus’ linked to group seeking government ownership of private industry

WASHINGTON – The Democratic Socialists of America boasted in a newsletter to insiders 70 of its members currently serve in Congress, but an independent survey by WND suggests the number of actual avowed or semi-secret socialists in the House and Senate is considerably higher – at least 82.

The DSA is a political action committee and bills itself as the heir to the defunct Socialist Party of America. It’s chief organizing objective is to work within the Democratic Party as the primary, but not sole, method of achieving public ownership of private property and the means of production.

Stress our Democratic Party strategy and electoral work,” explains an internal organizing document obtained by WND. “The Democratic Party is something the public understands, and association with it takes the edge off. Stressing our Democratic Party work will establish some distance from the radical subculture and help integrate you to the milieu of the young liberals.”

In October 2009, the DSA newsletter reported that 70 congressional Democrats are active members.

The group also claimed 11 socialists sit on the House Judiciary Committee, including Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich.

In this post, I want to explore two questions: (1) How plausible is it that such a sizable percentage of Democrats in the House of Representatives really prefer a centrally planned economy to a free market economy?

Isn’t that a job requirement to be a democrat these days?

and (2) Was it politically savvy or politically stupid of Allen West to make this statement?

Allen West isn’t afraid of shadows.

There are a lot of Senior voters in Florida. If you are Rep Allen Wes,t and you are trying to communicate to them, do you use the term progressive or even socialist democrat as terms they would know? Or do you use communist because you know that’s a familiar term for their age group? This is entirely speculation, because I still don’t understand why his stating the obvious (motivation) about progressivism should stir up such a controversy. It’s not like progressive are hiding their political ideology.

Progressivism

The term progressivism emerged in reference to a more general response to the vast changes brought by industrialization: an alternative to the traditional conservative response to social and economic issues and, despite being associated with left-wing politics, to various more radical political movements, such as communism or anarchism.

Today, members of the Democratic Party or the Green Party of the United States are most likely to self-identify as progressives. In the US Congress there exists the Congressional Progressive Caucus, which is often in opposition to the more conservative Democrats, who form the Blue Dogs caucus. Some of the more notable progressive members of Congress have included Ted Kennedy, Russ Feingold, Dennis Kucinich, Barney Frank, Bernie Sanders, Al Franken, John Conyers, John Lewis, and Paul Wellstone.

It’s a distinction with a difference. I don’t care how many Socialists or members of the Progressive Caucus there are (no one is disputing that). Many are “Communist sympathizers” and pursue Communist causes. Some of them (especially older members) belonged to “Communist Front Groups”. They have infiltrated the Democrat Party and other institutions. Trevor Loudon (for one) has done the research on this, but words have meaning and you’re going to have great difficulty proving the allegation they belong to the “Communist Party”. Sorry you find that too “analytical”…
