Video: Bush tax cuts get exciting new spokesman

posted at 9:59 pm on April 10, 2012 by Allahpundit

Tina blogged about this earlier but I figured you’d want to see the clip, partly for the curiosity of Dubya dipping a toe back into national policy and partly because you’ll be seeing this clip again later this year when the Democrats start their attack ads over letting the Bush tax cuts lapse. It’ll be an interesting test of the state of the Bush brand when they do. Is he still toxic enough to move the polls against Republicans if the DNC makes him the face of the pro-cuts argument (note his comment here about why they’re called the “Bush” tax cuts) or has he recovered enough of his reputation that his endorsement for extending the cuts won’t matter? I can think of at least one person who’s keenly interested in the answer to that question.

Here’s a short-ish clip of Dubya and a longer one of Paul Ryan from the same event. That’s, er, quite a pair of bookends when it comes to fiscal responsibility. But then, they did both support Medicare Part D.

The economy ws false, floating on credit and inflated housing values that folks borrowed against.

It was a lie.

You know he rest of the story.

rickyricardo on April 10, 2012 at 10:57 PM

Who inflated the housing values?

Obama Franks Waters, LLC
Destroyers of the nation’s economy.

I think Paul Ryan has quite a few heresies on fiscal conservatism that get ignored by conservatives. His voting record doesn’t seem to match the hype.

You might be right, but he’s also the only person in D.C. other than Rand Paul who seems to give a damn about the DOOM! we inevitably face right now.

Spliff Menendez on April 11, 2012 at 1:31 AM

I had some serious disagreements with W but man he and Mrs. W were a humble classy stark contrast over the insufferably entitled Jeffersons currently stinking up the White House and spending our money like well… it’s not their money…yeah we miss you W

HatfieldMcCoy on April 11, 2012 at 1:34 AM

And they both supported TARP and lots and lots of spending.

Bush will be remembered for doing and saying anything to pay for his two wars.

Bush the man that put Obama in office and will give us 4 more years of Obama because his machine backs Romney.

It will never end.

I don’t agree with this, I think all the Republicans care more than we think. They are just not good at connecting with their voters. I think Paul Ryan is possibly partially engaged in some self promation with his “bold” plans, but I’d clearly take Paul Ryan over Obama. My point isn’t to beat up on Paul Ryan, just to criticize with the hope he would do better. I’m not out to get the guy, I was just disappointed his voting record didn’t seem to match all the hype. He sounded like a liberal to me on TARP. I don’t think the economy was going to collapse we let some banks fail. There may have some short term pain but conservatives have essentially made it where anytime liberals scream crisis, the answer is spending and more government involvement.

Dr. Tesla on April 11, 2012 at 1:56 AM

I’m not convinced Rand Paul is really the answer and I think he’s more like Papa Rand than he lets on.

I’d prefer a Jindal, DeMint, Pence type of conservative over Rand Paul.

Dr. Tesla on April 11, 2012 at 1:58 AM

WOuld I do miss about Bush was he was a very good energetic campaigner. I would hope Romney can at least match Bush in that regard. McCain wouldn’t even drawing 100 people at some of his events in his own home state.

President Bush brought respect, and honor to the office. While not a perfect president, he seemed to have had a heart to serve his country. I too differed on many of his policies, but at the end of the day could admire him as my president. Why is it that when a republican president leaves office, you can feel served. But a democrat leaves you feel soiled? Sorry, rhetorical question…

Biggib on April 11, 2012 at 6:08 AM

I’ll wait.

He’s a good man. Made some mistakes and all, but he’s a good man and it’s good to see him again.

JellyToast on April 10, 2012 at 10:05 PM

I believe he was a good man with good intentions, but you know what they say about good intentions. What matters is what he achieved and attempted to achieve while he was in office. He was an open boarders, big spending, big government president who started two wars of occupation in nations that he hopelessly misunderstood. I guess you can comfort yourself by saying Gore would have been worse.

crash72 on April 11, 2012 at 7:28 AM

W…..

Great right on immediate 9/11aftermath.

Great on Bush era tax cuts.

Good on SCOTUS picks (unless Roberts supports ObamaCare).

Horrific on the Southern border and Amnesty.

Horrible on wasting American blood and treasure in Afghanistan to fight a politically correct “war”.

Horrible on TARP and Auto bailouts.

Bad on deficits, though Obama makes look like an amateur.

Horrible politically correct legacy at the Airports with TSA and not profiling the most likely terrorists, while stripping Granny.

Grew the scope and power of the Federal government.

No new refineries built on his watch.

Department of Education takeover of education hand holding with Ted Kennedy.

Didn’t provide an heir apparent that could run as a true Conservative in 2008.

“compassionate Conservatism” was code for “I’m going to finish the self castration of the gop that my Dad started”.

He failed to defend himself and as a result was demonized and the Dems used that in 2006 and 2008.

He gave us Karl Rove and 1/2 the RINO talking heads on cable TV.

And the worst thing…….he laid the groundwork for Obama in the Fall of 2008 to spend with abandon.

And is his reappearance designed to weaken Romney to lay the ground for JEB2016?

No more Bushes!!!!!!

They have led the Progressive takeover of the gop since 1988 and the takeover is complete and we’re apparently stuck with the Ruling class picking the next in line RINO every cycle.

Go away George Bush and if you like Texas ………stay there, and btw, any Saudi money help to build that Library like it did Bush 41 and Clinton’s?

Yep. Bush’s errors were mostly errors of omission; I shudder to think what that blubberbag Gore would have done. Or what might have happened if Port-a-John Kerry’s campaign hadn’t been Swiftboated.

MelonCollie on April 11, 2012 at 8:20 AM

GW!!

I remember a time when I could disagree, even passionately, but I still believed that the man at the helm was capable.

I have always felt that way of every POTUS (call me naive), until these past few years….it’s scary really..

bridgetown on April 10, 2012 at 11:12 PM

I disagree. I hated Carter and thought he was a moron, totally incapable of being POTUS let alone CIC.. I distrusted Clinton and never thought he was capable of controlling himself enough do a good job. I didn’t even think JFK was capable based on his lack of experience and I was right. Now we have Obama who is just another step in the same Socialist direction and total lack of capability that these people exemplified.

I did attend a McCain Palin campaign speech in MN in 2008. It was a packed event 20,000 + attended, and took a long time for traffic to clear out after the event. McCain also was there, but the crowd was there for Sarah.

Just curious, who would you have wanted to see as President in 2000? And no anybody but Bush or someone who didn’t choose to run comment either. Name a specific candidate. As I recall we had the choices of McCain, Keyes, Forbes, Elizabeth Dole, Alexander, Hatch, Buchanan, Quayle, Bauer, and Kasich for the Repubs. I won’t mention the Dems, I assume they weren’t on your list. Then there were people like Perot, Anderson, Nader, Phillips, Trump, Gorman, etc. from other parties. So I’m curious as to who you would have picked.

A government ran market is only slightly better than price controls. It would be better to address the underlying issues instead of dancing around them. We pay so much for prescription drugs because no one else does. When Canada fixes the price of the latest new cancer drug at 5% above cost of production, and Europe follows suit then who is left to bear the cost of development? We are. Every nation that engages is prescription drug price fixing should be put on the do not export list for new drugs. If they don’t want to pay for development then they don’t get the drugs. However, I do like the way you stated that opposition of a government boondoggle was socialist.
