Chaffetz: Why won’t the White House let us talk to Fast & Furious witness?

posted at 9:51 am on April 9, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

A duly constituted Congressional panel has requested to speak to a material witness in an ongoing investigation.  The witness himself has indicated through his attorney that he’s willing to testify under oath.  So what could possibly go wrong?  Well, in this White House … plenty.  The House Oversight Committee has requested that the Obama administration make former National Security staffer Kevin O’Reilly available for testimony to explain a series of e-mail exchanges in Operation Fast and Furious in order to determine just how far up the chain knowledge of the operation went in the Obama administration.  The White House has refused to make him available, even though O’Reilly has already agreed to testify, and that has Rep. Jason Chaffetz angry:

Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz told the Fox News Channel’s Megyn Kelly on Friday that although a key White House witness in the ill-fated Operation Fast and Furious gun-walking program is willing to testify about what he knows, the Obama administration won’t let him appear before Congress.

White House Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler sent a letter Thursday to Republican lawmakers Rep. Darrell Issa and Sen. Chuck Grassley, refusing their request to speak with Kevin O’Reilly, a former National Security staff member whose emails place him in the middle of the unfolding scandal. Issa and Grassley had written to Ruemmler on March 28, asking the White House to step aside and let O’Reilly talk to investigators. …

During his time at the White House, records show, O’Reilly carried on an email conversation with Frank Newell, then the head of the Phoenix field office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Their emails suggest that Newell was directly briefing O’Reilly on Fast and Furious.

In one email, Newell wrote to O’Reilly, “You didn’t get this from me,” indicating that he may have been subverting the established chain of command within the Department of Justice, which oversees ATF.

In another, Newell said, “Just don’t want ATF HQ to find out, especially since this is what they should be doing (briefing you!).”

Say, remember when this was going to be the most open and transparent administration in American history? Good times, good times. Presumably, the White House would have no problem arranging O’Reilly’s testimony if he had nothing important to say. The person on the other end of the e-mail conversation, Frank Newell, got a sudden case of amnesia about the import of these exchanges when he testified, and if that’s all O’Reilly has to add, it would be foolish for the White House to block access to him. Intervening in this manner looks very suspicious indeed, and the longer the White House fights over O’Reilly, the more it looks like O’Reilly might have something very, very interesting to add to the Fast & Furious investigation.

On topic, what is the actual law in this kind of situation? I naively thought that Congress could subpoena pretty much anyone and they have to show up even if they just take the fifth. So can Obama and Holder really get away with this?

Fast and furious, isn’t O’Reilly obligated to testify as to his part and role in FF? Why does 0 have the ability to block access to him? Is the cover up worse or just as bad in this case?

The fact that lib4life wants to change the subject by making Romney and his church out to be racists on a Fast and Furious thread is very good for people to see in my opinion. It shows their lack of depth, their inability to argue FOR their guy Obama…it also shows how pathetic and desperate they are at this point.

Think about it like this: you;re in a room full of people discussing politics.
There’s one guy who constantly is stepping in & trying to hijack the conversation.
You politely debate him time after time, but realize after a while he’s not about true debate.
He’s only trying to annoy & anger you & get you off track so true debate is stifled.
The members of the group eventually tire of this person & force him to go away where he’s free to annoy & anger other groups of people.
I’m all for free debate, but this critter was taking up space & derailing true debate.

The traditional role of the media has been to serve as an extra check on power and to educate the public on all other matters.

The industry has become corrupt, and as a result, just about every part of government has become corrupt and self-serving. The big question here is now that every citizen has the power to investigate such things for themselves, will they? Or, will every citizen have the guts to check their gov’t first before following squirrels the enemy throws out at every turn?

Heads up Kevin.

1996 Croatia USAF CT-43 crash

On April 3, 1996 at age 54, while on an official trade mission, the Air Force CT-43A (a modified Boeing 737) carrying Brown and 34 other people, including New York Times Frankfurt Bureau chief Nathaniel C. Nash, crashed in Croatia. While attempting an instrument approach to Čilipi airport, the airplane crashed into a mountainside. Everyone aboard was killed instantly except Air Force Tech. Sgt. Shelley Kelly, a flight attendant, who died while being transported to a hospital.

The final Air Force investigation attributed the crash to pilot error and a poorly designed landing approach. Five other aircraft had landed prior to the CT-43A and had not experienced any problems with the navigational aids. There was no emergency call from the pilots, and they did not initiate a missed approach, even though they were beyond the missed approach point when they hit the hill at 2:57 PM local time.

Speculations as to the circumstances surrounding the plane crash that caused Brown’s death include many government cover-up and conspiracy theories, largely based on Brown having been under investigation by independent counsel for corruption.

The 0bama Administration sent Kevin O’Reilly to Iraq — after he showed up on Issa’s radar — where he is clearly inaccessible to Issa and this entire investigation.

So, why doesn’t Issa send some people to Iraq, or even go there himself, and get O’Reilly’s statement under oath there? The US Government spends atrocious amounts of money on the most mundane of things — including lavish First Family Vacations over and over and over again.

Can’t Issa justify the nominal expense of a flight to Iraq and back to retrieve the sworn testimony of a person involved in F&F — who 0bama refuses to let testify and even further went through such trouble as to make him unavailable on the other side of the world?

I wonder what will happen when Mr. O’Reilly meets with a life-ending ‘accident’ or just so happens to lose his life to ‘violent insurgents’ and/or an ‘act of terror’ while Issa and other government officials press for his presence at the Capitol — and all the while 0bama has done everything he can do to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Would there be any outcry, whatsoever, among 0bama’s sheople? Would Republicans in a position to actually do something… actually awake from their coma’s and actually do something then?

George W. Bush, Tony Blair found guilty of war crimes … in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR — Former U.S. President George W. Bush and British ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair have been found guilty at a mock tribunal in Malaysia for committing “crimes against peace” during the Iraq war.

The Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal, part of an initiative by former Malaysian premier Mahathir Mohamad — a fierce critic of the Iraq war — found the former leaders guilty Tuesday after a four-day hearing.

“The Tribunal deliberated over the case and decided unanimously that the first accused George Bush and second accused Blair have been found guilty of crimes against peace,” the tribunal said in a statement.

-snip

The verdict is purely symbolic as the tribunal has no enforcement powers.

The tribunal is also expected to later hear torture and war crimes charges against seven others, including former U.S. Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld and former Vice-President Dick Cheney.

This is what Leftists would call “credible, multi-sourced proof”. It’s none of the above.

And Congress certainly has the power to have this person testify to the Committee in private if need be. Thats why I wanted to prod Chaffetz. DO IT. You have the power, subpeona the man for a deposition.

That all of Congress can be stonewalled by 1 person, Eric Holder is stupifying to me.

They appear to be afraid. Is it the media? The WH? The Republican good-ol’ boy leadership?

It’s maddening that this unlawfulness can occur without any enforcement of the law or repercussions. This issue should’ve been dealt with ages ago, yet here we are stomping our feet, huffing and puffing to talk to a witness.

The longer the WH holds out on this the sooner it will all be forgotten. If they make it to November then Obama is 4 to 1 for reelection. The Dem will feel they are home free. Look at the issue with the “long form birth certificate”, still has not produced it only an official short form. NOT THAT PEOPLE ARE SATISFIED, after three years they just gave up. Fast and Furious is the only issue that has grown that can actually bring down his presidency. Not because of the crime but because of the obstruction of justice that followed. At all costs the WH needs to keep this controlled. Watch, the AG will be offered the under side of a bus before November as an offering to the Fourth Branch of Government “We The People”. November is Fast and Furiously approaching.

Search your family and those your close to.

Find someone who works in the DEA, FBI, ICE, Border Patrol.

Get close to them, find out who knows a useful fact get that to this committee in the House and the one in the Senate. Keep a record of sending the fact.

Put the fact out on the net, to blogs, get the fact checked and get it known.

50,000 Americans doing that not stopping until all the cover up and other crap is known.

We have the power, the truth is the power, they can not hide the truth forever. We are the ones in this for the long haul.

do not dismiss fat old men

give each other credit for being true Americans, join together in this task.

They really need to get his testimony. The more documentation we have about the incompetence and corruption of this administration, the more likely we will be able to defeat them in November.

Also,

Fight now when we have this tool of the internet together with other means in a free speech constitutional republic under the rule of law.

The fight later without the freedoms we now possess will be 1,000 times harder for those who will follow.

It is a clear duty of U.S. all.

The King’s Law reigns….

Obama doesn’t want anyone to even discuss F&F…so Obama will not permit anyone to do so.

Now…there’s that terrible thing going on about the Augusta Golf Club…they won’t permit women, according to Obama…that’s what we are allowed to talk about.

And Trayvon…that’s more important…

And anything that actually matters to the Nation?

Nope.

Obama, the King, won’t allow things like that to be discussed.

Why this Obama guy has a 50% approval, at this late stage of the game, tells me that half of the population is just plain stupid.

I don’t look at it as anti-free speech. I look at it as having to deal with the repercussions of your free speech. L4L did not have to register for the site, agreeing to the provision to staying on topic… and yet L4L did. This is the repercussion of not following the rules you agreed to follow. Kind of like a contract. L4L broke the contract with the site’s owners that allowed him/her to post her speech on their servers. Why should Ed and others be obligated to keep her in spite of her breaking the contract? She had the freedom to make the contract, speak within the agreed upon topics,… and break the contract.

I find it refreshing that someone actually followed the rules and kept their word about enforcing them.

Actually, I take that back, its not stupefying. There are in fact 2 logical conclusions to the fact that Congress will not exercise its legal right to get Testimony in a Treasonous case.

1. They really are that stupid, and have no concept of the power they wield. Sigh.

2. They are part of the problem. They are complicit in the treason and cannot expose Holder without exposing themselves.
But I would think, if I were a Congresscritter, that I could send Holder to Federal-Pound-me-in-the-Azz Prison, AND cover my own azz at the same time. See Also: previous Ron Brown reference. The Clintons crashed more airplanes than the Argentine Air Force. Not to mention Vince “I don’t fly” Foster.

However, the result is the same, Congress no longer holds the reins of power, the WH does.

As to your comment, I’m not sure if that was a Freudian slip or not, but I believe that’s exactly what we’re discussing: just how much blood has been spilled by this administration’s incompetence and/or malfeasance.

And Pol Pot killed millions.

And treason is a hangable offense.

Its the principle of the thing. Selling weapons across an international border with the aim of subverting our own Constitution is treason. At the very least Congress needs to be asking the State Dept who there authorized the transport of weapons OUTSIDE the US borders.? Because IF no one there knows anything, then The ATF and DOJ violated international and US laws. I don’t care if they are part of the Executive, the Executive cannot just decide to do stuff of that magnatude on their own. So right there is I bet conspiracy by either the DOJ or the State Dept to hide wrong doing from Congress.

If I could get rid of all these Communists and Libtards, we would HAVE cheap gas.

A.m flash: We are running out of places to store the 300 year supply of LP gas we are mining. The only reason this is, is because EPA does not regulate LP gas mining…the same could be happening with oil.
