Congressional Black Caucus Chair calls “war on women” rhetoric “wrong”

posted at 3:01 pm on April 8, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Missouri Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver today defended the president’s Christianity and said it makes no sense to accuse him of waging a “war on religion.” His remarks — presumably inadvertently — led him to also denounce Democrats’ repeated refrain that Republicans are waging a “war on women.” The Daily Caller reports:

“If you believe that the president is a Christian, why would you still come to the belief that he’s trying to destroy religion in this country?” Cleaver asked. “I think we’ve got to stop that.  That is not doing this country any good at all. And the truth of the matter is we know better. We know better, those of us who are in the public eye.”

Ralph Reed, chairman of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, then put it to Cleaver to apply the same principle to the Democratic Party’s attacks on Republicans that they are waging a “war on women.”

“Yes, that is wrong,” Cleaver said. “And I’ve never said it, not one time.”

Cleaver has been among a number of voices in Congress to repeatedly call for increased civility — but a number of the members of the caucus he chairs have conspicuously failed to uphold any kind of reasonable standard of politeness. (Think Maxine Waters’ remark, “The Tea Party can go straight to hell” or Andre Carson’s inflammatory comment, “This Tea Party movement would love to see you and me … hanging on a tree.”)

While I agree with Cleaver that we cannot do other than accept the president’s word that he is a Christian (what Christian among us exemplifies the faith perfectly?) and I also agree with him that the phrase “war on [insert whatever you like here]” has become far too widespread, I do wish to point out again that the president, by the HHS contraception mandate, has shown a disturbing lack of regard for religious liberty.

The president greeted the nation this weekend with a refreshing address about Easter in which he wished a reflective and relaxing weekend for all of us. Here’s hoping he’ll also take this day to reflect — and that, through the course of that reflection, he might recognize that he betrayed religious interests when he insisted on a mandate that does not incorporate conscience exemptions. It’s not too late for him to humble himself on this and reverse course.

Tina, what part of “by their fruits ye shall know…”? Oboobi has yet to demonstrate his Christian faith. Saying you’re one doesn’t make you one, especially when he has stated that all faiths are spiritually equivalent. You’ve bought into the meme that we ought not judge one another, never ever. It’s simply not true, for we Christians are appointed to be judges, even of angels in the hereafter. Our time on earth is like an apprenticeship, training to be judges of what is good and in accordance with God’s will.

A 2005 study estimated that over 90 million females were “missing” from the expected population in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan, South Korea and Taiwan alone, and suggested that sex-selective abortion plays a role in this deficit. India’s 2011 census shows a serious decline in the number of girls under the age of seven – activists believe eight million female fetuses may have been aborted between 2001 and 2011.

When the President claims that Christians who are following milennia-old precepts of faith are waging a “war on women”, then what are we to think of him other than as anti-Christian? And, if one views that anti-ness through a Constitutional lens, we have that Mr. Obama is preferring his interpretation of faith over those others as he denies a freedom of conscience to those others — which translates to the establishment of a state religion which is not Christian even when viewed through rose colored spectacles.

I think that, all in all, Mr. Obama has well earned the words we on the right apply to him.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver

Turn on MSDNC any day of the week and their is a republican war on something. War on Women, War on Youth, War on Seniors. That’s all the democrats have fake accusations of the republicans warring on segments of the American population.

There is no war on religion? Than why did the DNC using Sandra Fluke so called reproductive activist whatever made up b.s. that is, attack the Catholic Church’s 1st Amendment rights?

Then there is Lawrence O’Donnell attacking Mitt Romney’s religion which just so happens to be Harry Reid’s religion.

O’Donnell denounced Romney as a guy who belongs to a church that
was created by a guy in upstate New York in 1830 when he got caught having sex with the maid and explained to his wife that God told him to do it. Forty-eight wives later, Joseph Smith’s lifestyle was completely sanctified in the religion he invented to go with it, which Mitt Romney says he believes.

There is no secular war on religion in this country, but you better not use the word God in a song about God Bless the U.S.A. in Massachusetts.

Mr Cleaver pretending there isn’t a secular movement against organized religion, isn’t going to make it go away. Pick a side. Considering you took an oath to up hold the Constitution of the United States of America, my expectation is you will speak out in favor of the 1st Amendment. After all, after every speech the President of the United States gives, he ask for a blessing on the United States of America. Ostrich behavior isn’t going to cut it -pick a side.

ScottG on April 8, 2012 at 4:27 PM

“If you believe that the president is a Christian, why would you still come to the belief that he’s trying to destroy religion in this country?” Cleaver asked.

I can’t know what’s in Obama’s heart. I can judge him only on his actions. He belonged to a crackpot church for 20 years–largely, if not exclusively–because he needed its congregation as a political base. Obama should have kicked Jeremiah Wright down a flight of stairs and found a new church the minute–THE MINUTE–Wright when on one of his tirades. That Obama didn’t do so proves he’s a coward of the highest order.

A healthy economy with businesses that hire people for good jobs is beneficial to everyone, including women. The ability for sue when things go bad can be highly overrated.

What did he do about guns? Paranoid much? Go buy as many guns as you like. Nobody’s stopping you but your paranoia and delusion.

Why is he doing anything he’s doing?

Now we’re talking sense. Doesn’t matter what he does, it’s the fact that you don’t want him around. Your attitude towards Obama is today as it was on his first day of presidency.

Hey lester, O’bama won 70 percent of the high school dropout vote. No Presidential candidate had ever done that before.

Only because of Heller and McDonald. Even after that, Obama and co. tried to bolster the anti-gun cause through Operation F and F.

I see you’re quick to change topic instead of giving an answer. You also do so with no proof whatsoever. Where did you exactly pull out 70%? Could you show any source?

Would that source be CNN exit polls of 2008 and also show that not only your number is false, but also Obama won every single education bracket with a wide margin among the well educated? If you actually throw in the link to the source then you would look like the a** that you are.

If we have to accept the President’s word that he’s a Christian, why is it the President refuses to accept the Catholic Church’s word that administering to the sick and the hungry are part of their religion?

Stop lying. The punk president doesn’t give anyone a choice. All the punk is doing is taking over every aspect of life and business. No oil, no salt, no this, no that.

If you’re so concerned about people having health insurance buy it for them yourself.

Correct on the first count. I don’t want him in the White House or in any position of power.

Wrong on the second: My attitude towards him has worstened since the first day of his disastrous presidency. I had a faint hope that he won’t be as bad as I feared. Unfortunately he has surpassed my fears – he is truly the worst president we have ever had the misfortune to endure.

Perhaps in red states? Also the reason why Allen West as VP could turn red states into swing states:

-Alabama’s pretty much on board with interracial marriage, with 67% of voters thinking it should be legal to 21% who think it should not be. There’s still some skepticism in Mississippi though- only 54% of voters think it should be legal, while 29% believe it should be illegal. Newt cleans up with the ‘interracial marriage should be illegal’ crowd in both states. He’s up 40-27 on Romney with them in Mississippi and 37-28 with them in Alabama.

A lot of cognitive dissonance it that comment. Taking our choices away is advocating for our right to make decisions. If you say so.

chemman on April 8, 2012 at 5:52 PM

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Our founding documents emphasize those rights and the right of an innocent person trumps anyone’s right to “choose”. Without the right to life, the rest is meaningless.

All of his actions, rheotoric, record demonstrate his rabid support for killing the unborn.

Government can’t do anything except by force. Period. In order to give to some, it must take from others. Government bureaucrats don’t produce anything except paperwork at ANY level. And this is coming from a guy who doesn’t make a lot of blanket statements, mind you.

Margaret Sanger was a racist eugenicist who specifically advocated abortions for “undesirables,” including blacks, in an age when racial eugenics was very fashionable. We had two early-twentieth century presidents who believed in it. WW2 and Hitler’s depredations changed that for the better, but that doesn’t change the fact that Planned Parenthood has carried on Sanger’s agenda through the years.

“Look, Norman, I Caught Walter!”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_h8C_rCbgU

First of all, how did I change the subject?

Second of all, your diatribe above almost exactly echoes the response I got here several weeks ago when I pointed out this Inconvenient Truth. Speaking of which, has anyone on Hot Gas seen any recent posts here from Chump Threads?

You, like Chump, aren’t Concern Trolls with your response to this result, you’re both Outrage Trolls. That’s because you can’t accept the possibility that such a result could possibly happen, that “only smart people are Democrats”.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Yet in 2008 all we heard from the Democrat Media were election results showing that O’bama won the votes of those with advanced degrees, etc. We never heard about these results showing how many rocket scientists like yourself also voted for him.

I got my original 70% figure not from CNN but from MSNBC exit polling. Mysteriously, MSNBC vanished their polls down the rabbit hole about a year ago. I have a screen cap of the original results, and if I can find it I will link to it.

As for CNN’s exit poll numbers from 2008, they have the national results for high school dropouts showing O’bama getting 61% of that vote. That is nothing at all to brag about, as it exactly equals the previous alltime high of 61% set by Algore in 2000.

But if you go to the CNN state-by-state breakdown exit polls, check out Florida. They had him with 70% of HS dropouts. Curiously, in their exit polling state-by-state results, CNN did not always divulge the HS dropout vote, yet did divulge the votes of every other level of education. What were they hiding?

I wouldn’t have a cow over this, O’bot. Relatively speaking, the percentage of voters who are high school dropouts and the percentage of voters who have advanced degrees aren’t that far apart, and each make up well under 10% of the population.

But it sure is fun to watch Leftist Heads Explode when you remind them that it wasn’t only Smart People who voted for their Idols!

Thanks for Playing…
