The “don’t hate me because I’m beautiful” lady: I’m not saying I’m beautiful, I’m saying you’re saying it

posted at 10:02 pm on April 6, 2012 by Allahpundit

C’mon, you didn’t think this week was going to end without a Samantha Brick cameo, did you?

You already read the original op-edeveryone did — but for extra comedy gold, go spend some time with the comments over there. Here’s the very first one, left at a little before 9 p.m. UK time on April 2, shortly after the piece was posted:

so who’s going to be first to say it…..

- alan, new york, 2/4/2012 20:49

They got another 5,700+ comments after that and pretty much all of them were saying “it.”

She does admit here to having written the piece partly tongue-in-cheek, but I’m not sure what to make of this: “I’m not saying that I am attractive. I’m talking about the perception of someone who is considered to be attractive by other men and women and what that does to our society.” Er, which men and women are those?

Exit question: Second look at low self-esteem?

you stole the words out of my mouth, I think any woman who dye’s her hair blond thinks they are prettier then a non blond. Sorry folk’s I just don’t see it! You take a woman at say 200 pounds, she my THINK she looks great as a blond, but she’s on a sliding scale because she is over weight. Well listen ladies if you’ve gained a few extra pounds, just dye your hair blond, it might not help your looks but it sure helps your confidence level.

Get off your high horse. The UK is every bit as porky as the US.

kit9 on April 6, 2012 at 11:25 PM

I have a hard time imagining a country porkier or as porky as the U.S.

terryannonline on April 6, 2012 at 11:26 PM

I lived in Manchester, UK a bit. The ladies of the Northwest are quite cute, warm and friendly, but, sadly, they typically do let themselves go quite a bit as they move on in years. Whereas, there is more pressure for women in the States to keep their figure in as decent shape as possible. Better weather in most parts of the U.S. year round, but also better food at a better price.

The only time I see porky Americans is when I’m at a buffet.

shannon76 on April 6, 2012 at 11:47 PM

Maybe I’m alone on this,.. but, while looks are subjective, and to each their own…

I feel sorry for her..

It’s not her looks or how she thinks she looks.. but the subliminal call for help. I don’t really think her outward attitude of her being all that is genuine, more like,.. a hidden message, closer too.. (I’m so lonely inside,.. please, please pay attention to me.)

Just my take on her..

I don’t see her as comical, or overpoweringly arrogant,.. not so much as just very very lonely inside..

just me?

maybe.. but the dad in me sees this.. a teen girl who desperately needs loved, needs friends.. that much came out of her article, she see’s herself as always alone, and never trusting her friends.. that is almost certainly of her own doing.. yet,..

I do feel so sorry,.. being alone, truly alone is something we humans are hardwired to process as pain. My life the last few decades has taught me to never smile when someone hurts,.. not because it’s rude,… but because I’d hate to be in her place..

She’s damaged.. but not in the commonly perceived way.

more like an awkward 12 year old girl way.. kinda plain, but kinda pretty in a way too.. has trouble making friends, because she lacks the skills,.. and because she can’t trust…

I hope she works those issues out, but she needs to do that privately next time, with a1l the help a real friend can give.

I must share a posting I made elsewhere earlier this week:

She’s not even original. Anyone remember the “don’t hate me because I’m beautiful” line from a 1980s Pantene commercial featuring Kelly LeBrock?

But Brick is a perfect candidate for this week’s ménage à trois of self-worship, pompousness and narcissism:

Samantha “don’t hate me bcuz I’m beautiful” Brick
Keith “$10 million chandelier” Olberman
Raven’s QB Joe “I think I’m the best” Flacco

And if they’d like to turn it into a narcissist convention, there’s this guy who lives in a big white house somewhere on the east coast …

Julie Banderas lost her anchor slot as a consequence of her offspring, who contributed some pounds during dormancy which mom kept. Beautiful face, I agree. She is a Colombiana, one generation removed, I think, and maybe was a Beauty Queen somewhere when young. Las Morenas are very popular I am told with His Narcissus, Geraldo Rivera.

There’s a particular mental dysfunction called Body Dysmorphic Disorder in which a person, typically a woman, perceives herself as extremely ugly. I’ve met one or two, and the ones I’ve met are nice people. But they pile on the make-up like they’re putting it on with a pallet knife, poor things. They often end up looking ridiculously overdone and vain to the unaware observer. But it’s all covering up for a really pitiful self-esteem.

Like you, I felt kind of sorry for that lady, because I think she’s probably got an underlying problem. People really need to stop picking at her. It’s like kicking a puppy at this point.

From her tweets it sounds like Ms. Banderas preferred to be reporting instead of anchoring since she become a mother because she didn’t have to spend so much time preparing for a three hour show.

I’ve been in England for the last week (well, and Scotland for the last two days, flying back today) – and the locals are very much like us Americans in size. In London, the vast majority of the trim and thin women I saw were foreigners, mostly young women from France or Russia.

The late night shows had a time with this woman, it was really funny. I don’t think she’s ugly (she looks very British), but I have seen plenty of other women her age on this island more deserving of a free taxi ride or bottle of champagne for their looks than her. There are some real beauties here in Edinburgh, and I’m not talking about the sheep either. : )

Amadeus on April 7, 2012 at 6:58 AM

She’s a nice “package” that fulfill men’s expectations …she has a nice voice, gentle and kind, and speaks respectfully to others. I’d buy her a bottle as well.

She’s 100% correct..the column was about how OTHERS thought she was attractive and how men rewarded that and insecure women punished it, because they were threatened by her happy, gentle, kind personality and above average looks.

Intellect is “skin deep”, I see by most of the comments. Most all the comments miss the point, completely.

terryannonline on April 6, 2012 at 11:54 PM

I’ve lived in Ft Lauderdale. I can relate to the trauma of witnessing enough flesh for two women being stuffed into one bathing suit. And frankly, there were men with same problem.

I think writing about appearance if fair game …..her mistake was writing about it in a narcissistic way.

terryannonline on April 6, 2012 at 10:51 PM

No, her mistake was probably showing herself. That said, some people aren’t all that photogenic but in person are really knockouts. And vice versa. At any rate I think there’s a lot of unnecessary cruelty here.

ddrintn on April 7, 2012 at 7:42 AM

Thing is, she is an attractive woman, but not drop-everything-and-stare attractive. And when you write an article like that, you’d better be Keira Knightly gorgeous…not just girl next door pretty.

And why is that? Because the readers have a need to feel superior? When I first saw the link to her article several days ago, I shrugged it off. But I knew as sure as shit we’d have days and days of people having to point out how hideous the woman is. It’s fascinating. Her detractors are more narcissistic than she is, when you come down to it.

First, did I say she was “hideous”? Sheesh. Chill out.

Second, she’s pointing out her superior looks. Naturally people are going to say, “Okay, let’s see them”. People are appalled, generally, by narcissism, and anything that smacks of “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful/intelligent/funny/educated” comes off as abject narcissism. It’s ALWAYS a turn-off.

At her age, she should have known this going in.

ddrintn on April 7, 2012 at 7:57 AM

Honey, it ain’t your looks that are the problem with people not liking you. It usually is your behavior. If you talk to a married man for even a few seconds, that man’s woman will get territorial.

That’s called…nature.

KirknBurker on April 7, 2012 at 7:58 AM

Grace_is_sufficient on April 7, 2012 at 7:57 AM

Which affects me….how? If someone, ANYone says they are beautiful but I don’t particularly think so, I just move on and let it go. As I said, the 5,000 + comments that AP alluded to says a lot more about her detractors than it does about her.

ddrintn on April 7, 2012 at 8:00 AM

This article had me reminiscing of the many different ways men showed their appreciation of my looks over the years. Many more payed me no attention. I’m only average and it didn’t take long to figure out there was always someone better looking than me. She put way to much emphasis on her looks to the detriment of her relationships with women.

I’d be very curious how she reacted to other beautiful women who grabbed the men’s attention.

dbrhmccrtr on April 7, 2012 at 8:19 AM

Yeah, but sexiness (which could be described as an aspect of “beauty”) doesn’t really depend solely on physical appearance. The sexiest women I’ve met haven’t exactly been Playboy centerfold types. In fact, those types are usually too self-absorbed to be sexy anyway.

ddrintn on April 7, 2012 at 8:27 AM

Well, she’s saying women can’t or don’t compete with her they just hate her. That’s pretty insulting. Most women can hold their own and she’d be no threat and they would not hate her. They may try to bring her down a notch and put her in her place from such an insult.

DHChron on April 8, 2012 at 8:27 AM

Good grief. She just wrote an article relating some of her personal experiences. She didn’t make the claim she was the most beautiful woman in the world, but rather that she had run into enough people that considered her beautiful enough to be jealous of her in various ways (women) or give her freebies (men). I didn’t find her article particularly arrogant, just written about her own experiences. She clearly is beautiful enough to make her experiences believable. The cruelty and heartlessness of so many of the comments is disgusting. Seriously, if you don’t have something good to say, I say shut the heck up. What is the point in putting her down?

willamettevalley on April 9, 2012 at 4:02 AM

I’ve known a few women like this, and while they were all very pretty, not one of them was disliked because of her beauty. They were typically arrogant and self-centered, and enjoyed making others feel inadequate. Yet they claimed that they were hated because of their beauty. Frankly, their attitudes were downright ugly, making them look less attractive to others. I’ve also known very attractive women who were loved by almost everyone. For example, there’s a young lady in our church who is considered beautiful to all who know her. Yes, she’s attractive, but she also has a beautiful heart. She’s kind to everyone she meets and tries to see the best in every situation. She’s always one of the first to step up when someone needs help. Her actions and her caring attitude have made her one of the most loved people in our congregation. As my grandmother used to say, “Beauty is as beauty does”.
