Quotes of the day

posted at 10:49 pm on April 4, 2012 by Allahpundit

“OK, I’ll concede that contest is getting close to over as well. Mitt Romney will almost certainly be the GOP nominee. Rick Santorum is entitled to stay in the race, and to offer voters in the remaining states an alternative. But it’s probably time for him to do what Mike Huckabee did in similar circumstances in 2008—basically to stop attacking the almost inevitable nominee, and instead to adjust his own message going forward to a positive and issues-based one.

“For his part, Romney is entitled to savor a hard-earned victory. But not for long. He needs to begin to figure out how to win the general election. In a way, the remaining two months of primaries is a great opportunity for Romney. On the surface, he can go through the motions of finishing up the nomination campaign, using his current team and delivering his familiar message. It will look like business as usual. But beneath the surface, Romney should be quietly but purposefully developing a new and much improved business plan for the fall. Absent adjustment, Romney’s effort to unseat the incumbent president now feels destined to recapitulate the losing efforts of Bob Dole in 1996 or John Kerry in 2004. But the good news is that Romney is cold-blooded and hardheaded. He didn’t put himself through all this to run a respectable losing general election race. He may be more willing and able than most politicians to change his team, to challenge conventional thinking, and to invite fresh ideas for the conduct and strategy of his fall campaign.”

***

“Eleven months and several rival campaign meltdowns later, Romney is widely viewed as the presumptive GOP nominee. The campaign touts his consistency, the fact that he has repeatedly drawn valid distinctions between the Massachusetts and federal laws and never wavered in his opposition to the president’s signature accomplishment. ‘Every time the issue of health care was front and center, he made it very clear where he stood,’ said Kevin Madden, a Romney adviser. ‘Because of that, it was an issue he successfully navigated in the primary.’

“Romney’s critics, however, offer an alternative explanation for his success at burying his health care record.

“‘People have certainly had the opportunity to hear that Romneycare was the basis for Obamacare, and he still won a lot of primaries. That says something,’ said Chris Chocola, president of the conservative Club for Growth. ‘I think what it says is that there wasn’t a compelling alternative.’

“In other words, Romney prevailed over his health care record not because he built such a persuasive case that it differed from Obama’s, but because he faced lame competitors who failed to build a strong case against him.”

***

“Tonight on CNN, Robert Ehrlich, Mitt Romney’s Maryland campaign chair, suggested that voters — particularly women — would not be exposed to Romney’s ‘real views’ until the general election. Ehrlich said that once women ‘see’ Romney’s ‘real views,’ the gender gap between him and President Obama would dissipate.”

***

“‘The Republican establishment — I’ve yet to meet a single person in the Republican establishment that thinks Mitt Romney is going to win the general election this year,’ Scarborough continued. ‘They won’t say it on TV because they’ve got to go on TV and they don’t want people writing them nasty emails. I obviously don’t care. But I have yet to meet anybody in the Republican establishment that worked for George W. Bush, that works in the Republican congress, that worked for Ronald Reagan that thinks Mitt Romney is going to win the general election.’”

Uh oh – PPP polling shows Romney over Santorum in PA by 5 points – Rick needs to exit ASAP before he ends up losing PA – he doesn’t want to go out that way. Actually, I could care less how he “goes out” for everyday he stays in, he is splitting the party and giving Obama more of an advantage.

Mr. Rywall is my favorite. I can’t say he is my favorite Canadian but he is definitely my favorite contrarian.

Cindy Munford on April 5, 2012 at 12:12 AM

He’s intelligent, just philosophically ruined. One can have intellectual interesting dialogues with him and he can give/take. He also has the capacity to be objective. He’s one of the few who can criticize his own sied, Kennedy over here, etc.

Most of the domestic ones are plankton/gnats/jelly fish…don’t even qualify as sheep.

Schadenfreude on April 5, 2012 at 12:52 AM

Agree.

arnold ziffel on April 5, 2012 at 12:48 AM

Well, being intellectually honest, with the exception of Reagan and Bush 43 (W), you’d have to go all the way back to Eisenhower to get to a better President than Slick Willie.
Don’t get me started on Kennedy the election thief or Nixon the inventor of the ememies list and the EPA.
Yeah, I know. But it is what it is.

Mr. Peterman. tried Pilsner Urquell the other day at your suggestion. Very good, just different than what we are used to. I like Corona and Coors. I think a lot of taste preferences is what you were raised around. I hated beer and cigarettes when I was young but just worked through it. I’m ok now.

That’s the one. There are degrees of “like” and you have no problem. I have this theory that gets me by, I don’t bother to dislike anyone but there are certainly people that I don’t mesh well with. No one’s fault, we just don’t click and best to keep interaction to a minimum.

AZfederalist on April 5, 2012 at 12:43 AM

Very true. there’s a portion of my county GOP central committee that is just about fed up with the GOP old guard and we’re talking about running under the Constitution Party banner next time. Of course, they’re all Paulians, but they’re also the younger ones and the ones that go door-to-door for candidates when the need arises. We live in a place where it can be hard to find people even willing to run as Republicans, we could hardly do worse with some other label.

BabysCatz on April 5, 2012 at 12:51 AM

Something tells me Santorum’s ego is now in charge of the campaign. What makes him think he will have a wonderful May if he embarrases himself in his home state? Romney hasn’t let his machine even loose yet.

Who’s gonna want to vote for the guy that loses his home state? Ask Al Gore that, and why he never didn’t try to run in 2004.

There is nothing that excites me about Mitt Romney. Which is exactly what excites me about him. We have discovered the hard way that charisma alone gives us terrible leaders. With Romney and Ryan I feel nothing but pasty wonks. But that is exactly what we need to make the sober choices that will put our financial house in order. I do not envy our leaders over the next four years. They have to cut spending programs enough to restore our credit rating. It’s a thankless job. I just hope we don’t have too many Wisconsin/Greece riots.

Gosh that was so cruel and uncaring of Ed to mock our precious Sea Kittens like that. I am outraged and saddened and outraged again and will campaign to get a formal apology from Ed or my name isn’t SparkPlug.

Good tune and so appropriate. Cool riffs which brings out the passion to persevere through these troubled times of commenting oppression.

Indeed. And let this be our anthem….

I don’t think I would use up all the point you have been accumulating on that thread.

I see your point..Romney now has to do a very good job of selling his ideas to us skeptics and not go maverick on us..:)

PS..He could very well choose Ryan..I am not so sure he does..:)

Good idea. Caution is advised or I could be skating on thin ice with the modulaters (oppressors of linky freedoms).

Yes and seeing Flava Flav in that acid-washed duster coat really takes me back. Okay, not really, but still.

That’s a wide spread of music on those two choices. I was thinking more along the lines of Rage Against the Machine for our anthem but those guys are such d!cks. So I went with this because it’s unexpected.

Well, he always said that he would stay as long as we needed him but didn’t want him but that he would leave when we wanted him but no longer needed him… Either that or he’s in jail again.
