Quotes of the day

posted at 10:49 pm on April 4, 2012 by Allahpundit

“OK, I’ll concede that contest is getting close to over as well. Mitt Romney will almost certainly be the GOP nominee. Rick Santorum is entitled to stay in the race, and to offer voters in the remaining states an alternative. But it’s probably time for him to do what Mike Huckabee did in similar circumstances in 2008—basically to stop attacking the almost inevitable nominee, and instead to adjust his own message going forward to a positive and issues-based one.

“For his part, Romney is entitled to savor a hard-earned victory. But not for long. He needs to begin to figure out how to win the general election. In a way, the remaining two months of primaries is a great opportunity for Romney. On the surface, he can go through the motions of finishing up the nomination campaign, using his current team and delivering his familiar message. It will look like business as usual. But beneath the surface, Romney should be quietly but purposefully developing a new and much improved business plan for the fall. Absent adjustment, Romney’s effort to unseat the incumbent president now feels destined to recapitulate the losing efforts of Bob Dole in 1996 or John Kerry in 2004. But the good news is that Romney is cold-blooded and hardheaded. He didn’t put himself through all this to run a respectable losing general election race. He may be more willing and able than most politicians to change his team, to challenge conventional thinking, and to invite fresh ideas for the conduct and strategy of his fall campaign.”

***

“Eleven months and several rival campaign meltdowns later, Romney is widely viewed as the presumptive GOP nominee. The campaign touts his consistency, the fact that he has repeatedly drawn valid distinctions between the Massachusetts and federal laws and never wavered in his opposition to the president’s signature accomplishment. ‘Every time the issue of health care was front and center, he made it very clear where he stood,’ said Kevin Madden, a Romney adviser. ‘Because of that, it was an issue he successfully navigated in the primary.’

“Romney’s critics, however, offer an alternative explanation for his success at burying his health care record.

“‘People have certainly had the opportunity to hear that Romneycare was the basis for Obamacare, and he still won a lot of primaries. That says something,’ said Chris Chocola, president of the conservative Club for Growth. ‘I think what it says is that there wasn’t a compelling alternative.’

“In other words, Romney prevailed over his health care record not because he built such a persuasive case that it differed from Obama’s, but because he faced lame competitors who failed to build a strong case against him.”

***

“Tonight on CNN, Robert Ehrlich, Mitt Romney’s Maryland campaign chair, suggested that voters — particularly women — would not be exposed to Romney’s ‘real views’ until the general election. Ehrlich said that once women ‘see’ Romney’s ‘real views,’ the gender gap between him and President Obama would dissipate.”

***

“‘The Republican establishment — I’ve yet to meet a single person in the Republican establishment that thinks Mitt Romney is going to win the general election this year,’ Scarborough continued. ‘They won’t say it on TV because they’ve got to go on TV and they don’t want people writing them nasty emails. I obviously don’t care. But I have yet to meet anybody in the Republican establishment that worked for George W. Bush, that works in the Republican congress, that worked for Ronald Reagan that thinks Mitt Romney is going to win the general election.’”

i can’t believe you guys aren’t furious that the establishment is throwing you under the bus already! here on Hot Air just the day after Willard wraps up the nomination there are posts advocating for raising taxes and passing the DREAM Act! The etcha sketching begins! The establishment is turning away from your super-senisible and super-popular policies like deporting every illegal and cutting taxes on the rich, you know, the policies that will give you a landslide in November! Are you guys really gonna put up with that?

Mark Levin has a point, but time’s have changed. In Obama, the Left perfected despicable Alinsky tactics. They attacked Palin mercilessly. Romney is wise enough to use his surrogates and super PACs to do the butchering for him.

Scarborough has turned into the egomaniacal fool Olbermann. Funny, to hear him talk – Clinton didn’t act during the day without conferring with Joe in the Oval Office every morning. Joe led around Newt Gingrich by the nose and Newt was his b*tch. As I said in another thread, Joe always states he has “people running up to me in airports” saying this and that, usually that Joe is the most intelligent person in DC or complementing him on his brilliance. I’d love to follow him for one hour in any airport in the US and would gladly hand over 10,000 dollars for each person who “runs up to him”. He’s a boob.

“In other words, Romney prevailed over his health care record not because he built such a persuasive case that it differed from Obama’s, but because he faced lame competitors who failed to build a strong case against him.”

I think Chris Chocola hit the nail on the head. What a lame bunch indeed. I really like Michelle Bachmann but she just wasn’t really cut out for the Presidency, at least not yet. Perry couldn’t debate; Herman Cain couldn’t fend off baseless accusations; Newt sounded great one minute, lousy the next; Santorum had a pretty dicey Senate record and too much tendency to drift on his message.

It doesn’t matter if Romney reaches the magical number of 1144 delegates and “wins” going in. A new candidate can still have his/her name placed in nomination in the first round if five state delegations agree. This is made possible by Rule 40b and Rule 38. –Quote from C4P.

Yeah, that’d be great numbers for your messiah, the only problem is that the way the numbers are going up is by making the universe of jobs go down or number of people seeking work go down. That’s a big problem for your buddy Jugears. You see, people in the country aren’t feeling all warm and fuzzy knowing that the jobless rate is going down because system is being gamed. They, or their neighbors are still out of work. They are paying more for gasoline than they’ve ever payed. Food prices are going up while their income (if they are employed) is stagnant or going down. Jugears can tout “the recovery” and “inflation is non-existent” all he wants, the problem is the people aren’t experiencing that fantasy, they are experiencing the reality and it isn’t the skittles and unicorns that Jugears is promoting. So yeah, the reality is that the government numbers are looking good, but the cold hard reality is that those numbers are being gamed and the people know it.

/of course if you are on the public dole, then, yeah, life is great! Just ask Nanzi Pelosi’s daughter.

dmann on April 4, 2012 at 11:13 PM

He gave us Obamacare, which is something we have wanted for over 70 years. He is doing the best he can.

The enthusiasm for Rmoney is simply overwhelming and quite remarkable./

Yes. It’s quite a groundswell of heartfelt support that Rmoney has inspired in his paid campaign staff.

casuist on April 4, 2012 at 11:23 PM

you have 4 choices.

1, vote for Romney
2. vote for Obama
3. don’t vote

cynccook on April 4, 2012 at 11:23 PM

What happened to the civility that MSNBC has always promoted…those guys were using terms like “put him out of his misery” and “he will kill him in April”…ooooh…they seem to be promoting violence…

They think in the general they will go etchy sketchy on us and that will bring in the women.

promachus on April 4, 2012 at 11:15 PM

And to think all the Mittbots got their panties in a knot when the Etch-A-Sketch comment got made. Yet, here’s Ehrlich saying they’re gonna shake it and that will draw the women’s vote.

What would you people tell Mitt to help him? because thats what it might come down do.

boogaleesnots on April 4, 2012 at 11:11 PM

1) kiss some serious TrueCon azz. I mean public apology, firing top advisors, and replacing them with unimpeachable TrueCons.
2) admit MassCare isn’t working out so hot and might have been a bad idea
3) bring some people from the grassroots into your inner circle and make them tell you things you don’t want to hear.
4) Stop dissing Sarah Palin and make your campaign follow suit. It’s totally counterproductive.

alwaysfiredup on April 4, 2012 at 11:24 PM

he killed the guy that attacked the country and killed 3000 Americans under the republican’s watch.

DBear on April 4, 2012 at 11:22 PM

The same guy that was offered to Clinton twice and refused to do anything about even AFTER WTC ’92 AND the USS Cole?

C’mon AP, I know it’s 11:30 Eastern, but you’re supposedly relatively young, right? Romney up 5 in PA, you gotta give us something.

CaliSwag on April 4, 2012 at 11:25 PM

I found out Romneys real views by watching the 1994 debate with Ted Kennedy.

liberal4life on April 4, 2012 at 10:54 PM

And that (among many, many other reasons) is why you are so full of Fail. You assume that there are “real views” of Mitt Romney’s.

Mitt Romney is our Bill Clinton. He believes in the advancement of Mitt Romney. If principles have to suffer for his greater glory, then principles just have to suffer.

And for all the b1tching and moaning the Left did about Big Bill, he was a mighty talented political operator, who was elected POTUS twice.
