Palin vs. Couric: “Today” wins Tuesday ratings battle with GMA

posted at 3:52 pm on April 4, 2012 by Allahpundit

You know, that fourth hour with Kathie Lee and Hoda has always been a weak link. It could use some spicing up, a little fresh blood. Just saying. Just puttin’ that out there.

Was this ever really in doubt?

Sarah Palin’s appearance as a guest host on NBC’s Today beat Katie Couric’s guest hosting of ABC’s Good Morning America in the ratings battle on Tuesday. The NBC morning show has held its 17-year ratings lead over its ABC rival for the first two days of this week.

With Palin guest hosting, Today drew just under 5.5 million total viewers on Tuesday, according to Nielsen Fast National data. Good Morning America drew 5.14 million viewers with Couric, who is filling in all week.

How much of a difference did Palin make? Hard to tell without a full week’s worth of ratings data, but compare yesterday’s numbers to (a) Monday’s, (b) a week in mid-March, and (c) the first quarter’s. Via TV Newser:

“Today”
First quarter: 5.39M overall, 2.39M in the key 25-54 demo
Week of March 19: 4.98M overall, 2.18M in key demo
Monday: 5.11M overall, 2.20M in key demo
Tuesday with Palin: 5.5M overall, 2.21M in key demo

GMA
First quarter: 4.93M overall, 2.00M in key demo
Week of March 19: 4.84M overall, 1.97 in key demo
Monday with Katie: 4.78M overall, 1.76M in key demo
Tuesday with Katie: 5.14M overall, 1.92M in key demo

Both shows beat their usual overall numbers for all relevant periods, but interestingly both performed below their first-quarter averages in the key demo. Katie’s debut Monday actually did worse than the mid-March weekly average, but she came roaring back yesterday; “Today,” which beat its mid-March average on Monday, did even better by comparison, gaining nearly 390,000 viewers overall for Palin versus the 360,000 ABC gained for Katie from Monday to Tuesday. So yeah, Palin clearly helped. But like I say, the rest of the week will give us a better sense of how much.

Via the Blaze, even Jon Stewart thought she was “actually quite good and likable.” Sort of.

Still waiting for a Mittbot to slap Couric instead of Palin. They seem to smack our side and let the Dems off easy.

Governor Palin commented by email to Kate O’Hare at  Zap2It:

“The people backstage who make the ‘Today’ show happen are top-notch! Todd (husband Todd Palin) said to let you know, Kate, that ‘…they put my home TV crew to shame’ (That would be my crew of Todd and a buddy — and sometimes the kids helping out — in our Wasilla studio located in the back of Todd’s airplane hanger).
“Really, it was a lot of fun to work with every single one of the folks at the ‘Today’ show. I have so much respect for the workerbees at my FOX job, and to see this network support staff working just as hard to produce their network’s product reinforces my belief that it’s the good people with their elbow grease and nose to the grindstone who make the world go ’round. They make the talent look good!
“And, frankly, I’m ecstatic we beat the ‘perky one,’ although I wouldn’t have gone up against ABC’s vacationing Robin Roberts, because she’s such a good egg. By the way, both Robin and Matt Lauer have traveled the long journey to Alaska and dealt with unglamorous, rugged conditions to see more of our world; they’ve shown respect for a more unconventional Americana lifestyle, and we appreciate that.”

She allways seems to be such a happy and grounded person..:)

Palin wins ratings….dog bites man.

I guess this is news to people that think Palin’s influence has gone away. Palin is still the conservative voice most listened too. Those that wish/hope/proay her influence and/or likeability goes away are to be denied endlessly.

Insteand of trying to push her off the stage which just isn’t going to happen Mitt would be smart to offer her a seat at the table. But we all know Mitt isn’t smart.

I wish you good luck too. For me it’s either not feeling 100% or the muse is just not there. I also must find a way to see if my readers like me better as snarky, or as a matter-of-fact blogger/journo. For the life of me, I can’t believe journalists don’t see how important they really are or they take that for granted.

They get to witness history firsthand. I must fetch Greg Leventhal from FOX on Twitter and tease him about how happy I am that he’s in that NY Auto Show and not in Afghanistan (true!) I like the guy a lot.

And why Leland is in Jerusalem? Except for Shep most of the guys are way decent on FOX as well.

If Palin is going to go this “Red State Oprah” route that Breitbart envisioned for her, she needs a show opposite The View. That way we can enjoy the lamentations of those harpies as she routinely crushes them in ratings.

Kataklysmic on April 4, 2012 at 4:06 PM

Sarah, what is good in life?

Sarah:”To crush the Liberals, drive them before you, and hear the lamentations of Katie Couric and the harpies on the View.”

Again, we all need to use this as a reason to lobby NBC to replace permanently Ann “the Hack” Curry with Sarah Palin. It so would be sweet to wake up each morning and turn on a once liberal disgusting morning show and see Sarah Palin opposite the clueless Matt Lauer. What a truly Fringe reality it would be…just saying :)

See where Selective Logic gets you? What’s it like to revel in an audience applauding your dimwitted logic? How smart is that? Bottom line? Your just another dishonest liberal misleading your fellow citizens. Nothing more…………..except tragic.

wtng2fish on April 4, 2012 at 5:39 PM

Sarah slammed it, especially the part with the stack of papers. Take that,Perky! As for Jonny-boy, Craig Kilborn was 10X funnier on that show.

SMACKRUNNER on April 4, 2012 at 5:53 PM

What Sarah was doing with the appearance (and keep in mind they have been after her for two years to come on… so SHE decided when to do it) was to let the Americans who watch the crappy Today Show that she is still relevant, smart, funny, likeable, charismatic and STILL AROUND even after three years of continuous lies, smears and attacks. And just for “the perky one”, a whack across the back of her head to remind her who has more clout nowadays.
Sarah repeated the lame stream media comment several times, mentioned the need for a Conservative message in the media… even for Oprah… and showed she is not going to be pushed into the background any time soon.

Woo hoo! We currently have our first affirmative action president in Obama, why not our first realty TV celebrity president with Palin next?

NotCoach on April 4, 2012 at 6:10 PM

Those clips are exactly why I don’t watch the Daily Show. The double standards and spin never stop. Stewart makes fun of Palin for way Oprah needs conservatives on her show, yet neglects to mention that her show is failing and having the digusting liberal Rosie O Donnell only made it worse.

That Oprah sadly campaigned for Obama in 2008.

Like it’s really a surprise that Palin is going to promote conservatism in any format. We need more people like her, not less.

And yes Stewart, Obama is a socialist and it DOES make sense to say that some of the only people money are the Wall Street fatcats: that’s what happens with the gov’t picking winners and losers. Obama’s buddies at Goldmann Sachs, GE, Solyndra etc getting kickbacks while the average person takes it in the shorts!

Then again Stewart is a liberal clown who supports Obama. Colbert is even worse and I’m still amazed that had that piece of trash testify in front of Congress “in character”.

I work for Nielsen and was at a meeting last week where one of our departments showed off an application that allows users (clients have a specific access level and employees another) to see rating results minute by minute. You can see definite drop offs during commercial but also spikes that might coincide with specific stories (they can even do a search of CC transcripts for key words) or people. I’m sure ABC and NBC have analyzed that data, but it would be really nice if someone would publish it.

The majority of people who don’t like Sarah are liberals and RINO wimps.

They don’t like conservatives who stick to their principles and come across as too “polarrrizzzing.” ‘

They’d rather support RINO wimps like Mittens, Mcamnesty, Krispy Kreme Christy etc who are too afraid to call Maobama a socialist.

The Palin haters are the problem and a major reason are country is in such a mess. They’re spineless!!

LevinFan on April 4, 2012 at 6:16 PM

Good point. Stewart obviously confused communism (where capitalism is not allowedunderground)with socialism where capitalism is the source of money for socialist programs.

In a socialist government, you still have successful capitalists, but lobbying the government and being well-connected is part of the cost of doing business. You can still make money in a socialist environment if you’re well-enough connected to get favorable laws passed.

Stewart claims Palin’s statement is contradictory because of his own lack of understanding. Which, of course, makes him look like a fool.
