Obama: When I struggle, I just think of Jesus’ agony in the garden

posted at 12:25 pm on April 4, 2012 by Tina Korbe

At a prayer breakfast this morning, President Barack Obama said he looks to the story of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection for inspiration whenever he struggles:

The president got “Amens” from religious leaders at a White House prayer breakfast in the East Room as he recounted Jesus saying, “In this world, you will have trouble.”

Obama says he’s among those who sometimes question God’s plan for him. But he says that’s precisely when he recalls the “triumph” of the Easter story, and Jesus overcoming his doubts and fears before the crucifixion.

This isn’t the first time Obama has cited Jesus and his Christian faith as an animating force in his life. A media double standard applies here, as it does in so many things: When GOP candidates talk about religion, they’re often criticized for somehow not respecting Thomas Jefferson’s principle of the separation of church and state, but, to my knowledge, Obama has never been criticized along the same lines for his religiously themed comments.

In the interest of avoiding a double standard myself, though, I’ll write that I find Obama’s comments encouraging. They display none of the weak understanding of Scripture that some of his past comments did; they’re just a generic tribute to the Easter story near the Easter holiday. While such a tribute might very well have had a partial political motivation, it might also have been sincere. Either way, it says something positive about this country that our president knows statements like these won’t hurt his standing in the eyes of the electorate.

More importantly, though, the passage he cited is a good one for any president — but especially for progressive presidents — to contemplate. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace,” Jesus says in the Gospel of John, Chapter 16. “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Perhaps pondering that verse with regularity will help Obama to realize that earthly utopia is neither the aim of Christianity nor a possibility in this fallen world. Perhaps that realization, in turn, will inspire him to recognize, “The purpose of politics is not redemptive” and that “When governments seek after utopia, they end in oppression and disaster, because man and society are infinitely complex, and cannot be reshaped by an aristocracy of experts. Humility is the only proper attitude for governing authorities,” as Heritage Foundation president Ed Feulner has written.

Good thing he isn’t a conservative, or they’d think he actually meant it, and roll their eyes and complain about rubbing our faces in his religion.

RSbrewer on April 4, 2012 at 2:32 PM

No wonder people suspect Obama’s religion. Jesus did not “doubt” at Gethsemane. He asked that the cup pass over him BUT “thy will, not mine, be done.” Jesus knew what he had to do to break the bonds of Hell. Jesus understood that he was the sacrifice of the lamb Moses talked about; that Abraham learned; that the prophets predicted. He knew that his blood sacrifice would be the end of blood sacrifices and through this, human beings could be forgiven for the sins ALL humans are bound to commit since they are so far from God, they could never be with Him without this reconciliation.

Does Obama think that anything he does or does not do will free souls from Hell and give them a chance to be with God? His lack of knowledge is only surpassed by his own delusions about his importance in the universe and eternity.

It’s Easter. We should pray for him because I doubt he’ll ever even have MacBeth’s understanding of the futility of worldly glory. Perhaps someone should remind Barry of Jesus’s question to Satan: “And what good does it do a man to gain the whole world but lose his own soul?” The things of this world will, indeed, fade away. Leaving generations in slavery is not a good legacy to take to the next world.

Portia46 on April 4, 2012 at 2:33 PM

A man with Christian humility would quickly add that his troubles pale in comparison to those of Jesus and that he was not comparing his situation to Jesus. Obviously, I didn’t expect the Arrogant One to include such a disclaimer. After all, in his eyes, he himself is god.

Oh, pullleeeze, not the Jesus comparisons–again! This two-faced four-flusher’s spots and stripes will never change and it’s a clear sign of gullibility to believe otherwise. Every word that spews from this man’s mouth is calculated and spoken with a narcissistic, nefarious purpose.

A few lines of Jesus’s words from Matthew 23 are fitting here:

Matt 23:25-26 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.

Matt 23:27-29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Yes, extortion, self-indulgence, hypocrisy, lawlessness–all words aptly descriptive of Obabbler.

Obama comparing himself to Jesus made me want to vomit. Obama causes much more agony than he experiences. Jesus wanted people to love and care for others on their own – not because the government forced them to do so. Jesus valued life from conception on natural death and would NEVER have supported people being forced to violate their religious consciences. I could go on and on. Furthermore, I resent Obama using Jesus for his own political purposes during Holy Week – or anytime for that matter. I can’t think of another politician who has actually compared himself to Jesus and that is what this is in a poorly veiled way. Yes, they have talked about Jesus, but NOT a comparison that I have ever heard or read.

It was a “prayer breakfast.” So, to be fair, give him a pass on Church/State.

However, we all need to be suspicious of his “I am a Christian” statement. Because he has also stated that “there are many ways to God” – which not only eliminates John 14:6 – but eliminates Jesus Himself and the whole New Testament.

NotCoach on April 4, 2012 at 1:52 PM

We Americans would be wise to recognize that Obama knows EXACTLY what confessing the Shahaha means literally, and what it means to the Muslim world when a person confesses those words in Arabic.

While there is no religious test for President, it absolutely matters that Obama very intentionally sent the signal to the Muslim world that he is a Muslim, while telling the Christian world that he is a Christian. He could be neither, but he can’t be both.

In a post-9/11/2001 world, it is not acceptable to have such a duplicitous man deceiving the Muslim world, Christian world, or both, and possibly leading to a Fatwah declared against him or other citizens of the United States.

Do you really want Jihadists around the world believing that Obama is a Muslim?

If there’s one thing you can be sure of, if it’s Holy Week, the MSM will report some kind of not-so-veiled slam against Christianity. Usually, it’s some story about a group of ex-nuns whining that the Catholic Church won’t allow them as women to be priests. In the interest of avoiding a double standard myself, though, I’ll write that I find Obama’s comments encouraging. They display none of the weak understanding of Scripture that some of his past comments did; they’re just a generic tribute to the Easter story near the Easter holiday.

Er, this statement demonstrates an abominal understanding of scripture as regards Jesus’s sacrifice for mankind. He came as a servant and was tortured and died to reconcile mankind with God. Everything he taught belies your claim that it was any kind of “personal” triumph. And Jesus did not doubt his mission; He wasn’t looking forward to the ordeal but He handed his life over to His Father for you and me and anyone else who wants to accept His gift.

A “generic tribute to the Easter ‘story’”? Easter “holiday”? This “story” is pretty much the entire purpose of Jesus’s existence and upon which Christian’s hang their eternity hat. It’s a celebration, not a “holiday”, just like Christmas is a Mass not a vacation.

Oh, you don’t have to worry, hold on to Jesus’ hand
We’ll all be safe from Obooba, and the Occupy trolls
We just got to keep the Obooba, way down in the hole

All the angels, start to singing, ‘bout Jesus’ mighty sword
And they’ll shield you with their wings, keep you close to the Lord
Pay not heed to Demopcrats, for they hands are so cold
You gotta keep the Obooba, way down in the hole

Down in the hole

I don’t care and I really don’t think it matters when it comes to what radical Muslims think. Jihadists already want to annihilate us and they would love to have our president’s head in a pole no matter who is president. In terms of character it does matter, but in terms of what people who wish to enslave us all think I don’t give a rat’s a$$ if they think he is a Muslim or not.

I think he is a disingenuous Christian, but perhaps he is also a disingenuous Muslim. His actions and who he is speak far more importantly to his lack of character and the danger he is to American institutions then to any concern over what the cult of Islam might think.

NotCoach on April 4, 2012 at 3:56 PM

barry has repeatedly demonstrated that he lacks humility. it’s only humility that would lend credence to those words copped from the bible-a passage anyone even remotely acquainted with the new testament would be aware of. black liberation theology all but negates the traditional meaning: barry’s narcissistic square dance with himself while in office renders it a showcase of his ability to manipulate. even jesus, given who christians believe he is, was humble. no such lowering of self for barry I who has been repeatedly treated as if he’s the second coming and acts as of he wields ultimate dictatorial power over the entire government of the USA. he has even evoked power over christian churches.

he wonders about “god’s plan for him”? he never wonders about inflicting his own grand plans ( such as green power, obamacare, no borders, social and retributive justice) upon an unwilling populace that allegedly lives in a democratic republic. he doesn’t see himself as beholden to our founding documents although he took an oath of office on your bible pledging he was. the bill of rights at core upholds the ideal of free will and the sanctity of the conscience of the individual from intrusions by the government. attacks on the constitution and bill of rights casts barry in quite an un-american and unchristian light. he’s a narcissist. he’s a liar. he obfuscates. he demagogues.. he’s lent credence to the virtual lynching of an innocent until proven guilty “white” hispanic man. what in all this strikes you as humble and christian? why is a sitting president being allowed to indulge himself in such behavior yet is miraculously seen as maybe having some humility ? because he says so? because he knows the story of the passion of christ? i’m the biggest heathen on the block and i can quote the bible. words mean nothing if actions and behaviors do not follow suit.

unfortunately leaders use expressions of their real or alleged faith to manipulate people to gain control over them. even communists who as a matter of course do not believe in god approve of using the bible’s words to control the masses. it’s not for the glory of god;it’s for the glory of barry.

the faith of many christians leads them to genuinely strive to see the good and redeemable in everyone. this faith also commands them to judge not. from the outside it seems there is oft times an urge to vociferously judge those deemed socially objectionable (homosexuals, um, “sluts” for example) while at the same time failing or refraining from adequately gauging the malignancy of wolves who would use scripture to manipulate and subvert faith and free will to their own not god’s purpose. there is a difference between acting like jesus and thinking you are jesus. narcissists rarely see this distinction. the country opted i think willfully to misjudge and mischaracterize barry once-and look where we are. we do it again at out very distinct tangible peril.

There are many reasons to complain about Obama or to even mock his words or his intentions, but this isn’t one of them. His use of scripture in this case was accurate and timely given our proximity to Easter. Good grief everyone, lay off a little. In my opinion, we need all the Christianity we can get. “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

I urge you not to meekly accept this devil’s false claims. He is no Christian, and any rational view of his claims shows that. The Bible does not tell us to accept such liars as disciples.

2 Corinthians 11:12-15 And what I am doing I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
