“Fair to say Palin has been used sparingly on ‘Today’”

posted at 11:05 am on April 3, 2012 by Tina Korbe

As planned, Sarah Palin made her debut today as a member of “the lamestream media” — and, boy, was that phrase ever repeated by both SP and Matt Lauer throughout the morning! She first joined Lauer in the 7 a.m. hour for a brief interview to discuss the GOP presidential race. The Sarah Palin who verbally jousted with Mr. Lauer wasn’t the same relaxed Sarah Palin who appears regularly on “Hannity.” Her antagonism toward the MSM was evident — and, at least once, articulated — in the interview.

She displayed notable message discipline, though. Despite Lauer’s repeated attempts to express disappointment in Romney, Palin cleaved to the essential thing: Any of the GOP contenders would be better than Obama.

In the 8 a.m. hour, she joined Lauer and Ann Curry as an actual co-host of the show. She first appeared reading a newspaper, with a stack of newspapers behind her — a cheeky way to confirm that her appearance on NBC’s “Today” was intended to be a direct challenge to Katie Couric, who is guest-hosting ABC’s “Good Morning America” this week.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

For the rest of the hour, she appeared in a variety of segments, chatting it up with the other co-hosts and guests like … Tori Spelling, who asked SP pointblank whether she plans to have more children. The Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy live-blogged the show and captured several of Palin’s wittiest one-liners. (My favorite came at the end, when Al Roker mentioned hibachi cooking. “Let’s put some moose and caribou on the grill!” Palin quipped.) By the end of the show, she seemed far more at ease and Lauer seemed a little less patronizing.

Still, as Speakeasy noted, it’s “fair to say that Palin has been used sparingly on ‘Today.’” When the TV ratings come out this evening, we’ll see whether Palin earned bragging rights. Given that both “Matt Lauer” and “Sarah Palin” were trending topics on Twitter this morning, I bet she did, but, either way, she did more for “Today” than “Today” did for her. She no doubt inspired her considerable following to flip to NBC this morning, while NBC did little to give Palin a true platform. She was given the opportunity to make only a few minor remarks and had to fit her opinions to a relatively substance-less show. If NBC wants to see what she could really do, they should give her her own hour.

She can’t bring herself to lie and say she’s happy that Romney is going to be the nominee. I love her honesty. She won’t slam him, but that was definitely a non endorsement of him as the candidate.

Maybe you are missing all of her posts. Usually a good mix of posting news quickly with commentary to get the ball rolling for discussion, as well as posts with more extensive thought. Can’t imagine how difficult it must be to offer insight on such varied topics, at so young an age. Job well done, overall.

bntafraid on April 3, 2012 at 12:05 PM

While I dont agree with some of the venom here – to state Tina gets a pass – because she is too young is akin to a 14 year old not able to practice medicine.

i.e.: not qualified.

Some articles I do like, and no – not just ones I agree with – but the level of ignorance and immaturity is out there. So – Town Hall/Ed/HA, whatever can do whatever they want.

But at some point – a square peg going into a round hole that pisses readers off – or worse – devalue anything she writes… needs to be rounded out.

I am all for giving anyone young a chance – but I also believe in an honest assesment.

Tina wouldnt have made it past her 90 day review, but thats just MHO. Faaaar too much talent out there in todays important political world – and failure tends to make one wiser and stronger.

Odie1941 on April 3, 2012 at 12:13 PM

Even when the woman appears on a fluff that no one treats seriously the Hot Air Palin haters just can’t pass up the opportunity to do what they do – hate for no reason.

You’ve got politicians – even those who “look” Presidential going on late night comedy shows – and somehow the TODAY show is worse than guesting on Leno or Letterman? Didn’t Romney just do that?

Of course this was a ratings ploy by TODAY – Are you so stupid you think Palin didn’t know that? Given that campaigning politicians will go any place they can find 2 or more people to glad hand it’s hard to look down on Palin co-hosting the TODAY show.

darwin on April 3, 2012 at 12:17 PM

Sarah was just continuing with the plan that was articulated by Breitbart… to infiltrate the lame stream media and show the people who watch these biased liberal shows that Sarah Palin is not who she was portrayed to be and as Sarah said in one segment regarding whether Oprah’s O network would succeed…. “if she got some Conservatives on there”.
Since Conservatives are not going to be creating new networks, and the current ones are under pressure to get their viewership up instead of falling, “infiltrating” them with Conservatives and taking them over may be the best plan.
Face it, the media creates the main themes of the society… leaving it to the liberals is a stupid idea. No matter how much conservative ideas are advanced on the net, we still need to change all the MEDIA… in all its forms.
Just watch… slowly, but surely, Palin will work on the independents and slightly left of center people and try to move them to the right. If anyone could do it, she could.

I think this is the type of thing Sarah should be doing. She got the conservative message out to a largely liberal audience and did it with grace and humor. And just maybe some on the fence will hear her and consider listening more objectively to what our side has to say because of how she handled herself.

Figures. I posted on Palin’s FB wall that it was nice having somebody like her representing our side on the show rather than them dragging Coulter out of the cornfield or whatever.I didn’t use the cornfield reference but the point was the same.

Southernblogger on April 3, 2012 at 1:00 PM

Palin did well. I honestly don’t remember ever watching the Today Show before, so it’s hard to judge how the show this morning compared to others. The “quick hors d’oeuvres” segment with Tori Spelling seemed useful.

I find Coulter from her words and actions the one that plays on the base and is con-woman. why anyone whould read a book of hers, books written as if she is just saying what she thinks she has to to sell books to the unwashed among us is a mystery to me. coulter has done a lot to make conservatives seem like idiots. Never really liked the woman and I try to change the channel or radio when she comes on.

Tina wouldnt have made it past her 90 day review, but thats just MHO. Faaaar too much talent out there in todays important political world – and failure tends to make one wiser and stronger.

Odie1941 on April 3, 2012 at 12:13 PM

And you are an expert on this? Tina does just fine. She isn’t Ed or AP and that’s how it is supposed to be. Do you really think HA wanted another mature blogger? Why? I think HA is trying to expand its audience and that could be a good thing. Although I’m not too happy with the influx of Leftie trolls in the last registration. There are slow news days and also coverage of the media can be interesting.
The fact is you can skip Tina’s posts as I once in a while do with AP’s.
Hey if you want so-called maturity try Red State. LOL Or if you want no holds barred try AoSHQ. That’s what choice is.

I think she did well and see nothing wrong with her appearance, and after having endured the recent hit piece on HBO which received so much publicity, I totally get why she did it. Any appearance where we can get the conservative message out there is worthy, imo. Good for you, Governor. ABO 2012.

And every time I see a Republican attacking Romney, the attacker is always, always a Palin supporter ;)

Gelsomina on April 3, 2012 at 12:58 PM

I just never see Newt or Santy supporters attacking Palin, making personal insults about her or insinuating that she is playing her supporters to make money, etc.

It’s odd; so many Romney supporters seem to have this very visceral hatred for conservatives and anyone that conservatives support, like Palin or Rush.

Some Romney supporters used to say very bad things about Reagan too, before they started trying to push the meme that Romney=Reagan.

It’s as if they really, really want conservatives to not support Romney.

they are just following their cult leader:

Kennedy: And under your economic program, under the program of Mr. Reagan and Mr. Bush, we saw the growth in terms of the unemployment, the growth in the number of children livered [a typical Kennedy slurring of ‘living’] in poverty, the growth in terms of those children out of wedlock.

Romney: Look, I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I’m not trying to take us back to Reagan-Bush. My positions don’t talk about the things you suggest they talk about. This isn’t a political issue.

Not necessarily better or worse, no such thing on these kinds of sites, just different. So it really is a matter of preference.

Tina does OK. I think you’re kinda hard on her considering the dumb $h1T Allah comes up with on a daily basis. I’m surpirsed he didn’t come back from vacation to attack this with his usual PDS.

I usually just skim through the posts; typically the analysis doesn’t go beyond what I already knew about the post subject. Most of politics is just a rehash of what has come before. I do read posts analyzing polls, though.

If the goal was to improve viewership, it worked in our house. Sarah’s debut on Today was the first time in several decades I’ve watched the Today show for any amount of time.

IMHO, Sarah did fine being the nube in a what otherwise would have been a hostile environment to conservatives of any sort. In the few minutes I watched, she did get a dig in about how Oprah might save her network if she offered a more conservative lineup — to no response from the rest other than some variation of “nothing more to say here, let’s move along”…

You rombots never cease to amaze me. It’s ok if not everybody worships your liberal HC mandate icon. Actually, Mittbot, some conservatives actually have principle and can’t stand romneycare because of his positions.

See the difference between you palin haters and the people who dislike romneycare like me are, with you swill it’s personal about Gov. Palin, she’s stupid, she’s this/that, blah blah… With us who dislike romneycare it’s because he is a huge liberal on the issues.

mittbot do you see the difference!

Danielvito on April 3, 2012 at 1:23 PM

This was NOT Palin’s debut as a member of the media. She’s been one since she signed with FOX. You can argue that FOX isn’t part of the MAIN STREAM MEDIA all you want, they are part of the media and the more that FOX repositions itself to the ‘center’ the less daylight there is between them and the MSM.

The point is that I think Palin’s days as a politician are over and the rest of her career will be dedicated to appearing in the media as an ‘analyst’ or a quasi-political personality on shows similar to “Today”.

As for the suggestion that she should have an hour show of her own, I think many of us can live without yet another talk show. Palin’s interest to me was purely as a politician. Now that she’s abandoned that position, to take up one as a media personality and become yet another talking head, I’ve very little interest in anything she might have to say.

ToddPA on April 3, 2012 at 1:21 PM

ditto

I just can’t get excited about someone that said this:

“We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them,” he said. “I won’t chip away at them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety.”

or this:

“I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush.”

I like substance not carfully tailored remarks saying what i want to hear. but honest, real substance and honesty. If I want to lied too I’ll hire a hooker.

jdkchem on April 3, 2012 at 1:30 PM

Look, Palin didn’t decide not to run because she’d lose to Obama. She’s not afraid of losing a hard fight. She chose not to run because she’d lose to Romney. Palin could see that the people in charge of the party and conservative opinionmakers would never allow her to be nominated, no matter what she did, and pursuing that divisive fight would only make it more likely for Obama to win.

This is situation is temporary. Palin is going to be around for a very long time. She’s just too interesting to ignore. At the moment she is a television personality, not a politician. But that’s not a difficult thing to change, lots of people go back and forth in the entertainment and political worlds, and more will in the future. She needs to rehab her image with the nonpolitical public and being pleasant on the Today Show is one way to do that. Will she run in 2014? 2016? 2020? Who knows? For right now, with 2012 on the horizon, it really doesn’t matter. Lighten up, Francises!

CoolChange80 on April 3, 2012 at 11:49 AM

This is ridiculous. Tina is in her early/mid 20′s and Palin is 48. Tina, in her mid 20′s is a blogger on a well received national blog and has appeared on Fox, which is broadcast nationally, if not worldwide. Palin was elected a member of her town city council at the age of 28, older then Tina, by the way. That would be the honest comparison. Palin has + 23 years on Tina, so maybe in 23 years your critique will make more sense.
