Climate change skeptics should be “treated,” says enviro-sociologist

posted at 4:15 pm on March 30, 2012 by Tina Korbe

This just smacks of the same mentality that inspired climate change activists to say global warming deniers should be purged from meteorology. Kari Mari Norgaard, a professor of sociology and environmental studies at the University of Oregon, suggests that resistance to the threat of climate change at individual and societal levels must be “recognized and treated” before real action can be taken to effectively address the problem global warming poses. From a University of Oregon press release:

“Climate change poses a massive threat to our present social, economic and political order. From a sociological perspective, resistance to change is to be expected,” she said. “People are individually and collectively habituated to the ways we act and think. This habituation must be recognized and simultaneously addressed at the individual, cultural and societal level — how we think the world works and how we think it should work.” …

At the personal level, climate-change information raises fear about the future, a sense of helplessness and guilt. These emotions clash with individual — and often national — identity, sense of self-efficacy and the need for basic security and survival. In small groups, interactions often subvert political conversations and/or submerge the visibility of climate-change issues. At the macro level, or society at large, the co-authors point to an absence of serious discussion of climate change within U.S. Congressional hearings and in media coverage.

In many discussions in the last 30 years, climate change has been seen as either a hoax or fixable with minimal political or economic intervention, said Norgaard, author of the book “Living in Denial: Climate Change, Emotions and Everyday Life” (2011, MIT Press). “This kind of cultural resistance to very significant social threat is something that we would expect in any society facing a massive threat,” she said. The discussion, she said, is comparable to what happened with challenges to racism or slavery in the U.S. South.

Norgaard clearly assumes that climate change science is settled — but it still isn’t. Just three days ago, for example, Princeton physics professor William Happer wrote an article for The Wall Street Journal under the headline, “Global warming models are wrong again.” Here’s a bit of what he had to say:

It is easy to be confused about climate, because we are constantly being warned about the horrible things that will happen or are already happening as a result of mankind’s use of fossil fuels. But these ominous predictions are based on computer models. It is important to distinguish between what the climate is actually doing and what computer models predict. The observed response of the climate to more CO2 is not in good agreement with model predictions.

We need high-quality climate science because of the importance of climate to mankind. But we should also remember the description of how science works by the late, great physicist, Richard Feynman:

“In general we look for a new law by the following process. First we guess it. Then we compute the consequences of the guess to see what would be implied if this law that we guessed is right. Then we compare the result of the computation to nature, with experiment or experience; compare it directly with observation, to see if it works. If it disagrees with experiment it is wrong.”

The most important component of climate science is careful, long-term observations of climate-related phenomena, from space, from land, and in the oceans. If observations do not support code predictions—like more extreme weather, or rapidly rising global temperatures—Feynman has told us what conclusions to draw about the theory.

Norgaard is surely right that there are plenty of unscientific reasons to wish to think climate change does not pose the threat some scientists say it does. An acceptance of that hypothesized threat might impose certain obligations — to, say, purchase a low emissions vehicle — that a person might wish to avoid. Yet, there are surely plenty of unscientific reasons to wish to think climate change does pose the threat some scientists say it does. A desire for the power and latitude to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, for example, might motivate some politicians to accept climate science that they would not otherwise.

In charged debates like this one, it’s not helpful to use rhetoric that suggests dissenters are diseased. Far better to patiently engage in respectful discussion.

Obviously there’s a simple, dare I say final, solution to this. Global-warming skeptics should be rounded up and deported to beaches and tropical islands, since we insist that those lands are in no danger from sea-level rise. Then, all the global-warming believers should be resettled in Siberia and around Hudson Bay, to take full advantage of all the pleasant weather they’re convinced is on its way. Boom, everybody’s happy, and soon enough we’ll find out who was right and who was wrong.

steebo77 on March 30, 2012 at 4:32 PM

In many discussions in the last 30 years, climate change has been seen as either a hoax

That’s because the climate communists have cried “wolf” one too many times.

Lest we all forget:

50 years ago it was global cooling. The climate communists blamed particulates from fossil fuel combustion.

40 years ago, when Mother Nature didn’t cooperate with global cooling, they invented global warming, blaming it on CO2 from fossil fuel combustion. They said we only had ten years to save the planet and only by drastically cutting fossil fuel use for everyone except communists could we be successful. Of course this was to be accomplished through new taxes.

30 years ago they said we only have ten years to save the planet.

20 years ago they said we only have ten years to save the planet.

10 years ago they said we only have ten years to save the planet.

Today we only have ten years to save the planet.

Climate communists have been trying to stop humanity from using fossil fuels (except them of course, they’ll have all they want) for over 50 years with NONE of their doom predictions coming close to being true.

Besides science actually proving them wrong, there is no reason to think climate change is anything but a hoax.

And yet it is liberals who have been proven wrong about every single thing of the last 50 or so years. Liberals didn’t think the USSR could ever be defeated. Liberals believed in the 1970′s that a new ice age was coming. Liberals claimed missile defense was impossible. Liberals claimed that Obama would be a good president.

It seems to me that the evidence is very strong that liberals ignore facts and relevant information and instead rely only upon their ideology.

Liberals continue to pretend the “science is settled” on “climate-change” when it is anything but, and indeed all of the evidence of the last 10 years actually disproves the idea of man-made global warming and the “multiplying affect” of CO2. Yet the left ignores this and tries to drown out opposing voices with childish antics.

Almost as if the left were devout religious types who can’t take the idea of someone challenging their religion.

2. “[By] 1995, the greenhouse effect would be desolating the heartlands of North America and Eurasia with horrific drought, causing crop failures and food riots…[By 1996] The Platte River of Nebraska would be dry, while a continent-wide black blizzard of prairie topsoil will stop traffic on interstates, strip paint from houses and shut down computers.” Michael Oppenheimer, published in “Dead Heat,” St. Martin’s Press, 1990.

3. “Arctic specialist Bernt Balchen says a general warming trend over the North Pole is melting the polar ice cap and may produce an ice-free Arctic Ocean by the year 2000.” Christian Science Monitor, June 8, 1972. In 2008 Dr. David Barber of Manitoba University said “We’re actually projecting this year that the North Pole may be free of ice for the first time,” (ignoring the many earlier times the Pole has been ice free).

4. “Using computer models, researchers concluded that global warming would raise average annual temperatures nationwide two degrees by 2010.” Associated Press, May 15, 1989.

5. “By 1985, air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half.” Life magazine, January 1970.

6. “If present trends continue, the world will be … eleven degrees colder by the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age.” Kenneth E.F. Watt, in “Earth Day,” 1970. Remember before we were warned about global warming, we were told that the Earth was facing an Ice age.

7. “By the year 2000 the United Kingdom will be simply a small group of impoverished islands, inhabited by some 70 million hungry people … If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000.” Ehrlich, Speech at British Institute For Biology, September 1971.

8. “In ten years all important animal life in the sea will be extinct. Large areas of coastline will have to be evacuated because of the stench of dead fish.” Ehrlich, speech during Earth Day, 1970

9. Al Gore sold his scary global warming film, An Inconvenient Truth, shown in almost every school in the country, with a poster of a terrible hurricane. Former US president Bill Clinton later gloated: “It is now generally recognized that while Al Gore and I were ridiculed, we were right about global warming. . . It’s going to lead to more hurricanes.”

10. The Silly Stuff- Those Global Warming Moonbats figure out ways to blame the dumbest things on global warming. I call it the official crazy list of things Moonbats say global warming causes. The list contains, Incredible shrinking sheep, Invasion of jellyfish in the Mediterranean, Surge in fatal shark attack, Boy Scout tornado deaths, Severe acne, Global conflict, Beer tasting different, Suicide of farmers in Australia, Bigger tuna fish,Longer days, Shorter days, Collapse of gingerbread houses in Sweden, Cow infertility, UFO sightings in the UK, Rise in insurance premiums, and Heroin addiction and a rise in bear attacks in Japan and Frigid Cold Winters in Great Britain, and Cancer, Death from heart disease, diabetes, stroke, respiratory disease and even accidents, homicide, suicide, water -borne disease outbreaks, heavier, wetter snowstorms treacherous for travel and ambulation, Lyme disease, swarms of allergy-inducing, stinging insects, along with mosquitoes and devastating pine bark beetle infestations and the spread of forest and crop pests just to name a few.

“I’ve got some, ocean front property in Arizona… From my front porch you can see the sea…”

Standard doctrines for liberals:

If you disagree with a liberal you are obviously stupid.
If you disagree and can back up your position you are dangerous and stupid.

Reagan said;

“The trouble with liberals is that they know so many things that just ain’t so.”

Why do these over educated but under informed dweebs always want to re-educate the informed?

Having a piece of paper from Harvard University does not make you smart or informed. Case in point: How’s that genius in the White House working out for you?

(Let’s rename liberal universities propaganda camps.)

Literally NO DIFFERENT. Huddled in their cave, painting on the walls with their own excrement, and eating their offspring.

Ronald Radosh recounts an anectdote from a visit to Cuba by a party of US “progressives” in the 1970s:

Visiting a mental health hospital, the US leftists met gay Cubans, anti-Castro dissidents, and others who weren’t mentally ill. Some of the anti-Castro “mental patients” had been lobotomized. The more relatively honest US liberals were horrified to find Castro using lobotomies on political prisoners.

One US leftist, however, was unfazed and assured the others: “There are capitalist lobotomies, and there are socialist lobotomies”.

If you think this sort of “treatment” for political incorrectness could never happen here, think again.

If it has one, it’s probably a nonsense Phd, such as a Phd in “education” or some other non-real degree.

But, more likely, it is thrown out in an attempt to create the impression of authority. Liberals think that simply by pointing to someone who is credentialed, that it proves a point. So, a liberal believes that if she says “I’m a Phd,” we have to take her word as an “expert”.

Monkeytoe on March 30, 2012 at 4:52 PM

coverage of my research by high profile media outlets including the Washington Post, National Geographic, British Broadcasting System, and National Public Radio

ROFL Since when does coverage by any media qualify someone as an expert? This has to be one of the most pathetic resumes I have ever read. Of course I haven’t read L4L’s yet.

No. I would however support giving each of them a single shot .357 magnum pistol, and 1 cartridge. Or a razor blade, or perhaps even a rope and a step stool.

If they want to bounce themselves off this mortal coil, I say encourage the behavior. It leaves the rest of us better off for their passing.

So the scaremongers think I need to be treated for my resistance to computer-generated ominous climate-change information bcuz it’s not giving me fear about the future and a sense of helplessness? Okay, well, I’m living in the present and not in the future. But, I guess if I need to be treated, well then can I start my treatment by being treated to pizza and ice cream? I’m sure a vacation in Tuscany would start loosening that resistance. How about some advanced treatment with any SUV at all that I want followed by a fabulous multi-million-dollar home in the state or country of my choice? Think that kinda treatment will cure me?

So, when they have to face that their hoax is going no where, will we have to put all AGW believers on suicide watch?

Blake on March 30, 2012 at 4:51 PM

They have invested a lot in the warmest scam – it’s like that guy who keeps telling people the world will end, on such and such a date. It doesn’t end, and he comes out and states, he’s redone his math, and gives them another end of times date for sure when the world will end. And so on and so forth. In the old days folks weren’t mass communicating, and the “carnies” odds of the carnies skipping town with the loot was better, but now we have the information highway, and all the towns are getting warned in real time. If the carnies are unhappy, they should take it up with the inventor of the internet, and their warmest guru.

The problem for the warmest is “reality” mainly. None of their doomsday scenarios have come true, and their warmest Guru who promised the seas would rise, bought a million dollar home on the beach in Malibu with his ill gotten carbon credit scheme so there’s that, contradictory messaging problem/
