Another Occupy #Fail: New Yorkers not too thrilled with latest OWS ‘prank’

posted at 2:20 pm on March 30, 2012 by Morgen Richmond

Well, any Occupy ‘prank’ not involving human waste is at least a step in the right direction.

Apparently epistemic closure is a problem for anarchists too. They just don’t seem to get that the Average Joe does not look too kindly on blatantly lawless behavior, even when they might otherwise be sympathetic to the cause. Free transportation? Well someone is paying for it, and you don’t have to be a conservative (or even out of grade school) to know that it’s just plain wrong to take for free what others are spending their hard-earned cash on. Whether it’s a ride on the subway, or squatting in a foreclosed house that never belonged to you.

I’m not sure why, but I was expecting the occupy movement to re-group over the winter and get a little smarter about the types of tactics they are using. At times throughout our history civil disobedience has been used to advance causes which most of us would probably agree were for the betterment of the nation. I’m glad Rosa Parks refused to sit in the back of the bus and it sickens me that she ever had to. But fighting to end racial discrimination and demanding free stuff from a government going deeper and deeper into debt are not exactly morally equivalent, to say the least. And this fact isn’t lost on most Americans, regardless of whether the media continues to gloss over the occupy movement’s most egregious behavior.

If the occupiers’ aim was to shine a spotlight on the fact that their movement is rooted in anarchism and socialism, I can think of no better way for them to accomplish this than to engage in stunts like this. What is somewhat surprising is that mainstream allies of the Democratic party apparently have no qualms about continuing to align themselves with the movement. They seem to be banking everything on the President’s class warfare campaign. But if the misbehavior from rank and file occupiers is only half as bad as it was last fall, I just don’t see how they can avoid this backfiring. Is rampant anti-Americanism and illegal behavior a recipe for electoral success? I don’t think so, but we’ll find out in November I guess.

Really great point. I mean, how about if I go in the middle of an OWS camp and yell “RAPE” at the top of my lungs?

TWU Local 100 shouldn’t profit from this whatsoever.

OWS was never about accomplishing anything.

That’s just a story they slapped on this selfish and inane effort to make unemployed and underemployed “youth” feel better about themselves.

Sitting in mom’s basement and complaining = loser.

But,

Camping out in private property with other losers and chanting = one notch up from being a loser.

If a local union did help with this stunt then all negotiations should be cancelled immediately with this given as the reason.

Union benefits from zero is still zero.

I wonder if any security cameras picked up this activity? I would be surprised if there were no security cameras focused on the exits.

Kingfisher on March 30, 2012 at 2:44 PM

Yet another Union link to #Occupy – people have to wake up.

And WHY does everyone insist on saying, as if apologetically – that they ‘support the #OccupyWallSt MOVEMENT’ – what does that MEAN?

Get beneath the surface – you mean you support mob rule? You support trashing parks? You support giving people something for nothing? In what cases? All cases?

You’re being bullied, America – it’s time to quit laying down and pretending it’s nothing.

Rose in CA on March 30, 2012 at 2:45 PM

Stop with this BS! No one that works, pays taxes and cherishes freedom is sympathetic to any part of the OWS/DNC charade. I’m so tired of the moralist benefit of doubt/fair and balance statements that have infected almost every post, its lame.

dmann on March 30, 2012 at 2:47 PM

No property was damaged. Teams have chained open service gates and taped up turnstiles in a coordinated response to escalating service cuts, fare hikes, racist policing, assaults on transit workers’ working conditions and livelihoods — and the profiteering of the super-rich by way of a system they’ve rigged in their favor.

Hiring an organizer costs $32,000—and each additional organizer means we can register hundreds more voters and speak to hundreds more supporters.
According to the new counter, we’ve raised enough money to hire 62 organizers since yesterday.

I’d say that this pitch has a better chance of “creating jobs” than the $867 billion “stimulus” ever had.

I predict the “untimely” deaths, or martyrdom, of many black panthers and OWS types. Of course, they won’t be ‘officially’ linked to the groups doing the violence though, right? It’ll all be in the name of social justice anyway so that’s ok with the left wing media and erik von holder.

Obama’s dead head zombie army. Too dumb to succeed, programmed to fail, and too stupid to know the difference.

Like they say, when the only tool in your tool box is a hammer, you tend to look at everything as a nail. Racism is their hammer. And instead of realizing they are victims of their own stupidity, it is more self soothing to blame everyone else.

OK, the marxist morons are coming to the end of their logic supply. The Transit Union takes money from NYC & State taxes and fares want more money from NYC & State taxes and fares. So, while negotiating a new contract do they think the way to bolster their case is to cause a loss of NYC & State taxes by causing the city to have to pay for the mess the OWS & Union thugs caused while losing money for the MTA by obstructing the collection of fares? This makes absolutely no sense at all. The union thugs are now using the, let’s call them what they are, stupid OWSers to wring more money from the citizens? OWSers say this is done for the citizens but this is like mugging someone and telling the victim that the mugging is being done for their benefit. I am befuddled in a Hank Reardon manner.

Exactly.

I’m currently in exile in Massachusetts, because NYC has gotten to be unbelievably unbearable for me. To a certain degree it IS cheaper to live here than back there…and I was living in The Bronx, not Manhattan.

Taxes, fares, the increasing encroachment of the terminally stupid has made me leave, and so far the *only* reason to go back is to get my mother to move the hell away from there too.

Will Mama Bloomy go after these dirt bags in OWS or in the Union? Will either of them be forced to pay for the lost revenue and OT that this costs the city?

I know the answer is no, but dammit, they need to tamp down on these [expletive deleted], before they really cause damage and not be a reminder to everyone of how much of a failure their parents were.

LoganSix on March 30, 2012 at 8:00 PM

The Transit Union and OWS should be held accountable for re-paying every unpaid fare that MTA lost during their childish little ‘temper tantrum’. I’d love to see the City sue the OWS organizers in civil court for the entire cost with penalties of running the entire MTA system for one day. Let them see that you have to pay the penalty for your idiotic pranks.
