Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on March 29, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

You know what the most fun aspect of this feature is?  The President does all my work for me.  For instance, here’s Barack Obama in an interview with Marketplace last week (via Guy Benson):

InterviewerWith all respect, it was kind of a gutsy move I think to come to a solar facility. Your administration has staked a lot on clean technology, green jobs. The biggest item most people know about that strategy is, of course, a company named Solyndra, which your administration gave loan guarantees to, that then went bankrupt and has been the subject of many investigations. Are you doing your “all of the above” strategy right if that’s what we have to show for it — Solyndra?

ObamaWe are doing the “all of the above” strategy right. Obviously, we wish Solyndra hadn’t gone bankrupt. Part of the reason they did was because the Chinese were subsidizing their solar industry and flooding the market in ways that Solyndra couldn’t compete. But understand:This was not our program, per se.

Er, the program got its funding from Obama’s stimulus bill, which his own economic team proposed before he even got into office in January 2009, and which he demanded Congress enact immediately.  Democrats controlled both chambers of Congress at the time and refused to let Republicans rewrite any of the stimulus plan.  When they asked to be included in the legislative effort, Obama told them, “I won.”

What else did Obama have to say about Solyndra?  Here’s the President visiting Solyndra in May 2010, taking credit for the program that lost $527 million in taxpayer dollars.  Note well what the White House’s own website says about Solyndra’s loan guarantees:

Today, President Obama visited Solyndra, Inc. in Fremont California – a solar panel manufacturer that is building a new facility (and creating new jobs) thanks to funding from the Recovery Act.  So far, construction of the new facility has created over 3,000 construction-related jobs and the new factory could create up to 1,000 long-term new jobs. And this is just one of countless stories that together account for the up-to-2.8 million jobs the Recovery Act is responsible  for by the CBO’s count.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand here’s the President’s own words on that occasion:

Government still has the responsibility to help create the conditions in which students can gain an education so they can work at Solyndra, and entrepreneurs can get financing so they can start a company, and new industries can take hold.

So that’s why, even as we cut taxes and provided emergency relief over the past year — we also invested in basic research, in broadband networks, in rebuilding roads and bridges, in health information technology, and in clean energy.  Because not only would this spur hiring by businesses — it would create jobs in sectors with incredible potential to propel our economy for years, for decades to come.  There is no better example than energy.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand here’s the Vice President announcing the loan approval in September 2009 and crediting Obama’s stimulus plan:

“This announcement today is part of the unprecedented investment this Administration is making in renewable energy and exactly what the Recovery Act is all about,” said Vice President Biden. “By investing in the infrastructure and technology of the future, we are not only creating jobs today, but laying the foundation for long-term growth in the 21st-century economy.”

Aaaaaaaaaaaand here’s the President himself in the 2010 State of the Union address talking about the investment his administration made in Solyndra, without actually saying their name:

Last year, we made the largest investment in basic research funding in history -– (applause) — an investment that could lead to the world’s cheapest solar cells or treatment that kills cancer cells but leaves healthy ones untouched.  And no area is more ripe for such innovation than energy.  You can see the results of last year’s investments in clean energy -– in the North Carolina company that will create 1,200 jobs nationwide helping to make advanced batteries; or in the California business that will put a thousand people to work making solar panels.

All of these links, by the way, come from the White House itself, along with other references to Solyndra and the credit due the stimulus bill for creating all of the jobs at the company.  It seems that Obama believes per se is Latin for “please don’t search our website.”

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

his disowning of Solyndra and the use of “per se” is merely an attempt at performing a late-term abortion on the program. I mean, Dr. Gosnell had to resort to the snips if things got out of hand for him. Obama is merely doing the same. He just doesn’t want to be punished with a failure in the future

ted c on March 29, 2012 at 8:28 AM

He blames the Chinese for solar panel failure.Anyone knows the Chinese can build anything cheaper. Why not buy all solar panels from China and save the construction cost?Who cares if the quality is not there as long as it is close enough for government work.

docflash on March 29, 2012 at 8:33 AM

Consistent with his MO, Obama is reluctant to take responsibility for any of his policies per se. The media are remiss in not pointing out these contradictions, and we are equally remiss in not holding the media’s feet to the fire.

Part of the reason they did was because the Chinese were subsidizing their solar industry and flooding the market in ways that Solyndra couldn’t compete.

Yes, Barry, and that was why the George W. Bush administration turned down Solyndra’s loan application shortly before you took office in 2009. The Bush DOE reviewed Solyndra’s business model and said, “hey, Solyndra can’t stay in business if they’re losing money on every solar panel they manufacture.”

But then your Nobel-prize-winning economics genius Steve Chu took over DOE and said, “it doesn’t matter if Solyndra is losing money on every panel they sell, they can make it up in volume!” And you Barry, being the super-genius Harvard-trained lawyer that you are, agreed with Chu — and that is why the half-billion-tax-dollar failure that is Solyndra is very much your program, per se.

forest on March 29, 2012 at 8:12 AM

I agree. Lying doesn’t appear to hurt Obummer with the general public as long as the reelect-Obama-media chorus sings out hallelujahs in his favor. Now Solicitor General Verrilli’s bungled attempts to present the case for Obamacare to the SCJs–that’s another story. That was pure amateur hour and looks likely to have given the administration a body blow. The difference is between what a SCJ will accept as a logical argument as opposed to what John Q. will accept, and also how much twisting and spinning is possible when Scalia, Roberts and Kennedy are grilling you.

Burke on March 29, 2012 at 9:06 AM

Um, I’m not a Nobel economist, but didn’t our government basically subsidize the solar industry, just like China?

The problem is, even with slave labor, and no EPA regulations, China can’t even make them profitable. What chance do we have?

Ya know, the nuke industry could use a little help…and the oil industry in the Gulf really really needs assistance…so why isn’t Percy Obama “spreading the wealth around” to those energy producing folks who actually really truly need it?

Dear Sir:

I, being of sound mind, am beholden by the laws of God and Men, Mathematics and Physics, to tell you, that in no way, shape, or form, do I understand what you have written. I have read and reready your blurb several times, I have ready it backwards and forwards, and have even take a shot of strong whiskey and read it again, in a futile attempt to make heads or tails of it.

I must say, that in all my 1 year of blogging, I have never run across a more cryptic use of the English Language than the words you have used to write your particular piece of information. I have on several occasions, and undoubtably on all occasions while drunk, uttered words or even entire sentences that were absolutely nonsensical, particularly when talking to the fairer sex. But you, dear sir, have taken the cake.

I can not now, nor do I believe can I ever, make sense of your particularly peculiar grammatical structure. I am dumbfounded, and quite frankly, a little disturbed by what you propose to convey with your jibber-jabber. The only reasonable explanation I can come up with to put order to your message is that either you have suffered a fall, had a stroke, or are possessed by a particularly evil and non-english speaking devil.

If any of the afformentioned reasons are correct, be sure to note with complete aplomb, that I will pray heartily for you and your family. I hope all goes well with your surgery / medication / devil banishment. God speed, good sir. May the winds of fortune and fame ever be at your back.
