Audio: It’s time for Democrats to moderate on abortion, says … Jimmy Carter?

posted at 6:00 pm on March 29, 2012 by Allahpundit

Skip to 13:20 of the clip for the key bit. Dude, second look at–

No. I can’t bring myself to say it.

“I never have believed that Jesus Christ would approve of abortions and that was one of the problems I had when I was president, having to uphold Roe v. Wade. And I did everything I could to minimize the need for abortions. I made it easy to adopt children, for instance, that were unwanted and also initiated the program called Women and Infant Children, or WIC program, that’s still in existence now. But except for the times when a mother’s life is in danger or when a pregnancy is caused by rape or incest I would certainly not or never have approved of any abortions…

“I’ve signed a public letter calling for the Democratic Party at the next convention to espouse my position on abortion which is to minimize the need, requirement for abortion and limit it only to women whose life are in danger or who are pregnant as a result of rape or incest. I think if the Democratic Party would adopt that policy that would be acceptable to a lot of people who are now estranged from our party because of the abortion issue.”

Listen as Ingraham engages with him on how much bluer the south might be if blue-collar evangelicals didn’t have a moral objection to voting Democratic. Impossible to know offhand, though, whether they’d net more electoral votes that way than they’d lose. What’s the point in losing Mississippi by 10 points instead of 20 if, say, Colorado liberals stay home in outrage and you lose that state altogether? (On the other hand, if moving right on abortion helped them win Virginia outright while shrinking their margin of victory in California to “only” six or seven points, that might be worth doing.) And if they crossed the aisle, how confident would blue-collar evangelicals feel that the Democrats’ pro-choice wing wouldn’t end up controlling the party’s agenda anyway once it’s in office? I’d love to see a poll on the subject.

Even if you had hard evidence that moderation on “choice” would net them some votes, I wonder if the party would do it. Abortion is one of the modern left’s animating concerns, which is why I had fun with O’s conspicuous silence about it last night in his Planned Parenthood pander. Protecting it shouldn’t matter as much morally to them as ending it matters to pro-lifers since only one side considers it a matter of life and death, but it seems to. If the party betrayed them over it, even for electoral advantage, the backlash would be roughly as ferocious as it would be on the right if the GOP suddenly lurched towards the pro-choice position in hopes of winning a few swing states. (If you don’t like that example, imagine conservative reaction to the RNC embracing gun control because it might help in California.) If they did it, they’d be betting that the 15 percent of rabid abortion-supporting liberals who end up defecting to the Green Party could be replaced with a chunk of evangelicals such that the Dems end up topping the GOP narrowly in three-way elections (a la 1992 and 1996) each cycle. Again, I’d have to see a poll to know if that’s feasible — and it’s certainly true that some disaffected leftists would grudgingly vote Dem anyway if the race looked very close — but replacing people who’ll definitely vote for you with people who might vote for you seems awfully risky when the stakes are this high.

Its awfully risky because there is no moral ground for them to occupy. They know their out on a limb with this, which is exactly why they give no room to moderate because there is none to give. It’s all or nothing baby (no pun intended).

Do you even know what WiC does? it most certainly does NOT provide for moms and kids to the extent you are claiming. it gives a mom 3-5 gallons of milk PER MONTH for her child plus two 16 oz jars of peanut butter 4 loaves of bread and 6 whole dollars worth of fresh fruits and veggies and 36 oz of cereal a 1 lb block of cheeseand 4 bottles of juice. or if it is an infant add 2 gallons of milk for a breast feeding mom or 28 cans of concentrate formula. ( and trust me thats only about 1/2 of the monthly amount needed)Carter may not be as bright as some but hes one up on you after your stupid assertion.

since you asked so sweetly ill answer in kind :)

yeah it is. I was born and raised in the roman catholic church , i was raised to believe in God and to believe in self reliance and responsibility. the teachings of my catholic school upbringing allowed me to become a reasonably well adjusted woman who stays at home with her 5 children and takes care of them her husband and her home , who volunteers as often as possible and never ever turns her back on someone in need. and yet somehow i STILL agree with almost everything the republican party stands for , though at times i lean to the severe right. call me old fashioned but i absolutely hate the leftist meme that women who have traditional values and follow traditional life paths are unfullfilled. i am quite happy with my home making. so yes it is very possible to be both catholic and republican. Thank you for asking me!

If you are looking directly for one quote about not having abortions you won’t find it.

Though by the same manner, you won’t find anything in the Constitution or any writings of the Founders about the government not tracking your cell phones or putting clamps on the internet because of piracy concerns from big business, so I guess since it wasn’t said explicitly it is anything goes, yes?

The Bible has a part with David mentioning that God knew him in the womb. Combine that with the parts about not murdering and you find where Christians can make the step based off teachings.

Or you can say since it isn’t covered it is all good and now the government can come in and shut down websites as well because explicit statements are all that count.

If you are looking directly for one quote about not having abortions you won’t find it.

Thank you for that, which is honest.

Though by the same manner, you won’t find anything in the Constitution or any writings of the Founders about the government not tracking your cell phones or putting clamps on the internet because of piracy concerns from big business, so I guess since it wasn’t said explicitly it is anything goes, yes?

I consider the Constitution a binding legal document used for the governance of a diverse nation of peoples. I don’t consider the Bible a binding legal document. There’s a reason for the Bible not being considered a binding legal document for all people.

The Bible has a part with David mentioning that God knew him in the womb. Combine that with the parts about not murdering and you find where Christians can make the step based off teachings.

That was in the same testament that laid out the rules for owning and selling slaves, and ordering parents to stone unruly children. But those parts are icky, right?

Or you can say since it isn’t covered it is all good and now the government can come in and shut down websites as well because explicit statements are all that count.

Betenoire on March 29, 2012 at 7:06 PM

In the legal sense, yes.

It’s good to have specificity, because we can target and combat problems and abuses of authority more effectively with specific language.

Why does anyone respond to this reprobate?

tom daschle concerned on March 29, 2012 at 7:09 PM

I think there’s a couple people around here that still think they can get him to see it their way. Other’s may just not know what he is. They’ll learn.

Kelligan on March 29, 2012 at 7:13 PM

The Democrats are worried about losing Catholic voters in light of this administration’s attacks on the Church. I have a number of sermons from the pulpit lately on abortion and voting. This stance of Carter’s will make them seem more moderate… but it will result in nothing. It is a feint.

And if abortion never bothered Carter before, I don’t believe this election year conversion.

See my previous response to Betenoire for a contrast to your inaccurate rantings about my “hate” for Christians.

Disagreement =/= hate.

And you aren’t a victim.

My son is in the service, deployed in the ME. If he has to kill an enemy combatant to save a fellow soldier, he is a murder and condemned by your god? Seriously?

ladyingray on March 29, 2012 at 7:06 PM

No Ma’am. The duty of a soldier is such that whatever harm is inflicted upon him and his immortal Soul is such that it is viewed in an entirely different light. it is the teaching of the church that killing in self defense or the defense of others is a noble deed in so much as the soldier knowingly commits to burdening his soul before god and does it any ways for the betterment of his fellow man therefore so long as he did not kill with HATRED in his heart then there is no sin , and in any case the church teaches that no man is so far gone from the Lord’s grace that repentance will not be granted if the soldier is of pure intent. Your Son is a hero and shall inherit a heavenly peace at the end of his days.

But except for the times when a mother’s life is in danger or when a pregnancy is caused by rape or incest I would certainly not or never have approved of any abortions…

Even though Obama doesn’t want to “punish” his daughters with a baby if they sinned (by fornicating), Jesus Christ does not approve of punishing children with death solely because their parents sinned.
There are wonderful people alive today who contribute much good to this Earth who were conceived by rape or incest.

itsnotaboutme on March 29, 2012 at 7:17 PM

Without getting too far into details, anytime millions of the male carrier don’t succeed in reaching their target female carrier, that’s potentially millions of other ‘end results’ that never came into being…

Right?

Good Lt on March 29, 2012 at 7:06 PM

Sophistry.

your an idiot. its called nature , just like not all seeds sprout. no one actively went out of their way to make sure those million swimmers died. your arguement once again is pure elegance if you are going for the artfully vapid .

katee bayer on March 29, 2012 at 7:18 PM

This is a true story. My wife voted for Obama (and will again). She thinks Jimmy Carter is on the dime.

hey, at least she’s hot.

hanzblinx on March 29, 2012 at 6:08 PM

I’m sure she also voted for the Idiots the Democrats ran for President and Vice President in 2004.

I would love to hear why anyone would vote for those two.

BTW I voted for McGovern in 1972, and then Jimmy twice in a row. But of course I was just a Stupid College Kid back then.

Thou shalt not have abortions…

Which one was that one?

Good Lt on March 29, 2012 at 6:53 PM

Jesus also never said “Don’t shoot anyone with a laser”, but I think that is covered under “Thou shall not kill”.

Good grief, Good Lt. Your inability to reason is broken.

portlandon on March 29, 2012 at 7:23 PM

Jesus also never said “Don’t shoot anyone with a laser”, but I think that is covered under “Thou shall not kill”.

A laser doesn’t necessarily kill someone.

If I fire a laser pointer at a person, it doesn’t hurt them at all.

Besides, even if I did purposely with the intent to kill somebody and killed a person, and then repented and meant it, and turned form sin, I’d be forgiven.

‘Morality.’

Correct?

Faith, not works.

Good Lt on March 29, 2012 at 7:28 PM

He’s right. I personally still think the drawing line should be the first trimester, maybe slightly before in addition to, of course, the rape, incest, and mortal endangerment to the mother clauses.

Otherwise, after that initial window, it’s time to consider adoption.

i understand that some people cant help themselves and act like grammar nazi’s, but i really dont see how someone as incapable of logic as you seem to be can honestly think that little post is gonna change anything. unless you thought the silly nanny nanny booboo childish rhetoric (meaning the grammar/spelling nazi behavior) was going to make me pack up my toys and go home. lemme just say this i am raising 5 boys ranging from the age of 5-17 , do you really think you are gonna out-stubborn me young man?

Apparently not, but you’ve already been out-reasoned, so out-stubborning is moot.

Good Lt on March 29, 2012 at 7:32 PM

The Democratic Party’s stance on abortion and gay marriage is the only decent aspect of the Party, as ours is our shame.

The use of abortifacients was common in Greek medicine and certainly would have been common in Israel since the time of Alexander the Great (and perhaps long before). If Jesus had some big objection to a common practice, he could have said something about it. This leads me to suspect that he didn’t.

WRONG!
in the case of self defense if you killed someone and repent and mean it yes you will be forgiven … but if you willfully and intentionally kill someone (which is murder not self defense or defense of country and family etc.) then that is murder and is a cardinal sin which is an unforgiveable sin . nice try.

katee bayer on March 29, 2012 at 7:34 PM

WRONG!

Jesus saves all who come to him with an open heart and who accept him.

Who are you to know his mind or justice?
