Spike Lee does the wrong thing

posted at 11:00 am on March 28, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

On more than one occasion regarding the subject of the Trayvon Martin shooting, I have warned people about jumping to conclusions ahead of a thorough investigation.  Unfortunately, we have a great demonstration of exactly how that can have potentially deadly consequences.  Filmmaker Spike Lee thought he’d teach George Zimmerman a lesson by tweeting his home address to the world, apparently hoping for a little vigilante justice.  However, Lee tweeted the wrong address — twice — and instead put an elderly couple at risk:

Filmmaker Spike Lee made waves on Twitter last week when he re-tweeted to his 200,000 followers (h/t Twitchy) what was thought to be George Zimmerman’s home address in Sanford, Florida. Mr. Zimmerman told Sanford police last month that he fatally shot 17 year old Trayvon Martin in self-defense.

However, the Edgewater Circle address Mr. Lee re-tweeted out is not part of the gated Retreat at Twin Lakes where the shooting took place and where Mr. Zimmerman lives. The area is not even a gated community.

In fact, I took a drive to that Edgewater Circle address that so many on Twitter re-tweeted and cursed, and I discovered through a neighbor, named Tim, who lives across the street from the address, that not only does George Zimmerman not live at the lakeside house but a woman by the name of Elaine does.

As of this morning, Lee has not removed the tweets from his feed, according to Twitchy.  Perhaps Lee will “do the right thing” by this morning and delete them, because the couple that does live at the address Lee tweeted are understandably frightened about their safety.  The Smoking Gun reports on the McClains and the attention they have received from Lee’s messaging:

In an interview tonight, Elaine McClain told TSG that she and her husband were “afraid” due to the online linking of her address to Zimmerman. “We’re keeping everything locked,” she said. McClain added that the couple was particularly unnerved by a letter mailed to them at their home. On the envelope, she said, were printed the words “Taste The Rainbow,” the slogan for Skittles. Martin was carrying a pack of Skittles and a can of ice tea when he was gunned down by Zimmerman.

McClain said her husband returned the envelope unopened to the post office.

And how did this happen?  Poor research and jumping to conclusions:

Besides overlooking the different middle initial, perhaps that answer is connected to an old voter record for a “William George Zimmerman” at the Edgewater Circle property. That registration, which dates back to 1995, is for a 41-year-old man. The Zimmerman who shot Martin is 28.

Elaine McClain identified William George Zimmerman as her son, noting that he has not lived at the Edgewater Circle residence for seven years.

Jim Treacher points out the irony in this story:

If you’re against vigilantes taking matters into their own hands, except when it comes to dealing with George Zimmerman, #YouMightBeALiberal.

I notice Spike hasn’t been working much lately. I hope he’s been saving his money. Lawyers can be expensive.

Even if the address had been correct, it still would have been the wrong thing to do.  Lee should be ashamed of himself.

The original concern in this shooting incident was that the investigation into the shooting of an unarmed 17-year-old seemed cursory and insufficient.  Thanks to the national attention the case has draw, we now have two major investigations under way, one by the Department of Justice (an investigation endorsed by Rep. Allen West) and another by the state of Florida.  While it’s unlikely that the media will stop reporting tidbits of the story without knowing their full context, the rest of us should wait to see what facts can be established by these two investigations before jumping to any more conclusions — and before putting innocent people at risk like the McClains.

Update: Danny Glover puts Lee and Marcus Higgins in the Twitter Hall of Shame.

Unless they were called in by the local LEOs exactly what role does the DoJ have here? This is not a case of an agent of local govt violating the 1866 Civil Rights Act. There appears to be no conspiracy or group dynamic designed to murder blacks, as with the Klan. This is about the death of one man at the hands of another in the confines of the city of Sanford, Seminole County, Florida. There is no federal crime and I am curious as to Alan West’s support of the DoJ.

The police wanted to charge Zimmerman with manslaughter, but was overruled by the state’s attorney.

If true, not suprising: Police investigations tend to err on the side of caution as an exception rather than a rule. A civilian firearm death, a small pool of witnesses & a dash of politics will cause them more often than not, to file a charge.

However, it IS up to the State attorney to decide if he can move the case forward…as in, as the *evidence* is presented. What and how the DA heard, I’d like to hear more.

The issue here is the racist state attorney who needs to be fired. Apparently the life of a black man is not worth justice.

And you based this on what? Pictures of him holding down the victim while he was shot? A gun being planted in a hand? White robes in his closest?

I’m not sure on what you base this allegation on, but even if it was true (which it isn’t because you have ZERO evidence to support your claim) the DOJ (such as it is) AND Florida AG are appointing extra manpower for investigation.

So you’ll have *two* separate but concurrently running investigations…if they both say that Zimmerman was justified in shooting and the original state attorney handled it correctly, will you post an retraction or least a “Hey I jumped the gun, sorry!”

The would not be the first time in American history though.

Oh for…Get over yourself.

Black people have suffered aplenty here in America. So have, Indians (they *were* here first, remember), the Irish, Italians, Chinese, Japanese, Germans, Jews..we’ve all suffered some sort of racial backlash (some from other groups, some from *each other*)…

That being said, if things are so damn terrible, *why* aren’t the international airports full of people trying to get out? You included?

Zimmerman traced the tweets — which he said have been retweeted by actor-director Spike Lee — to a man in California. Zimmerman has implored the man to stop and said he received this response, “Black power all day. No justice, no peace” and an obscenity.

Unbelievable.

hawkdriver on March 28, 2012 at 11:35 AM

Pretty sneaky of Zimmerman to be on his back, on the grass, screaming “help me, help me” at the top of his lungs, and breaking his own nose, cutting his own scalp, as he shot the “victim” at point blank range. The poor victim was probably just trying to grab Zimmerman’s gun to inspect it, and make sure the safety was on.

You’re such a tool. We don’t know what evidence the prosecutor reviewed before deciding that an arrest of Zimmerman was not warranted, and we certainly have no evidence that the prosecutor’s decision was motivated by racial animus.

Witness reports, and Zimmerman’s own statement, indicate that Zimmerman was returning to his vehicle when Martin jumped him from behind. There have also been reports that Zimmerman was on the ground screaming for help, and that Martin’s own father listened to the 911 tapes after the shooting and told police that the voice of the person screaming was not his son. There have also been reports that when Martin was on top of Zimmerman, he felt the gun and went for it. For all we know, Zimmerman may not have intended to use the gun on Martin, but it went off during the struggle.

You don’t know what happened, and neither do the rest of us. But instead of waiting for the facts, you’re willing to condemn people who may be innocent of any wrongdoing, based on your own ideological biases. You’re as big a fool as race-baiters like Spike Lee.

He didn’t even identify his as black initially. When asked by the operator he said ‘I think so’, and only later positively ID’s him as black.

As far as the shooting, if someone had me on the ground and was pummeling away, I can’t guarantee I wouldn’t shoot either. Since there is no audio of the full encounter, we have no idea if Zimmerman warned the kid off or not.

JetBoy on March 28, 2012 at 11:47 AM

If you haven’t read the police report, then you are just a bigoted racist. Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose, and the back of his head. Did Zimmerman punch himself in the nose?

Witnesses saw the 6’2″ ‘kid’ pounding Zimmerman’s head in the sidewalk.

You are seeing racists around every tree.

If you believe this skinny kid started throwing punches at that larger guy and the only recourse was to shoot, then something ain’t right with you.

JetBoy on March 28, 2012 at 11:47 AM

Whoa!

Clear as day?

Stop looking at the pictures of the angelic 12-year-old. A 17-year-old at 6’2″, 160 isn’t as bulky as my 6’2″, 225 nephew, but that’s an awful lot of leverage on a 5’9″, 200 chump with a double chin.

What prompted the punches from Williams? Unless Zimmerman through the first punch, nothing excuses Williams’s punches.

Then it boils down to an analysis of Zimmerman’s use of deadly force with Williams on top of him beating the snot out of him.

Let’s go to trial.

BuckeyeSam on March 28, 2012 at 11:57 AM

Trained neighborhood watch guy investigates a stranger in his community, said stranger sucker punches him, breaks his nose, knocks him down, beats him, neighborhood watch guy shoots him once in self-defense. What’s the big deal?

A black kid is dead, so some white guy must go to jail?

Except, he wasn’t white, he was Hispanic.

Except the ‘kid’ wasn’t a kid, he was a full grown man.

Except the eyewitnesses saw the ‘kid’ pounding the Hispanics head.

Except you can hear Zimmerman yell “help” several times over 911.

JetBoy on March 28, 2012 at 11:54 AM

His crime was in coming back and confronting Martin and then cold c*cking him, knocking him to the ground. He then straddled the guy and slammed his head several times on the ground. He continued to punch Zimmerman in the face. Zimmerman had a broken nose and lacerations to the back of his head. That is great bodily injury. A person has the right to use deadly force against deadly force AND GBI.

Look, I usually get ticked as anyone when that race/victim card gets played. But in this case, race was the motive for the shooting, clear as day.

Jet, I think we all agree, that this is a classic case of the Race card being used to gain political points. But to call it as race was the *only* motivation, then you’ll have to show prior history that Mr. Zimmerman has for such actions.

Because we don’t have such a history available, why not err on the side of caution and leave that for further up the line when proof may present itself?

This dude did just a bit more than call in some random suspicious character.

True. Appointed neighborhood watch or not, he followed the kid and he *was* armed…however you leave off an important fact: Zimmerman *called* 911 and reported his actions to the operator there. He gave a physical description of Martin and broke off (as of now the evidence suggests) contact and was *retreating* to his car when this incident occurred.

That kid is dead, and under this Florida law the shooter walks away a free man.

Debatable. The Floridian “Stand Your Ground” law may NOT apply here, but self defense is still a legal defense in states where SYG isn’t even on the books. Even if as you say, he walks away “a free man” is he really? Do you think those gentle souls calling for his head, like Spike Lee, Sharpton, New BP Party will let him live in Florida for his remaining days in peace?

If you believe this skinny kid started throwing punches at that larger guy and the only recourse was to shoot, then something ain’t right with you.

JetBoy on March 28, 2012 at 11:47 AM

Again, debatable. Zimmerman may not have been a fighter or even a brawler, Martian for all we know could have trained for MMA on his off days..we *don’t* know!

However, I HAVE been in fights (professionally) and making arrests. I’ve fought people built like Martin that fought like tigers because they didn’t want to go to lockup and others that were built like Zimmerman that couldn’t fight a lick.

The gun changes everything of course; if Zimmerman didn’t have it and based on the injuries sustained, if Martin fighting had lead to Zimmerman being in a coma or dead, would you be calling for Martins arrest or release?

JetBoy on March 28, 2012 at 11:54 AM

I am gonna say it again; you are not keeping up with the facts of the case as we become aware of them. According to the police report Zimmerman says he was on his way back to his vehicle when Martin approached him. They exchanged words (Zimmerman’s account does not contain any words that could reasonably described as fighting words) and Martin punched him. An eyewitness stated to the police (the eyewitness also called 911, this is the 911 call where someone is yelling for help) that Martin was on top of Zimmerman beating him, and that Zimmerman was calling for help prior to shooting Martin. The above is why Zimmerman was not arrested. Under Florida law an arrest cannot be made if it is reasonably clear at the time that the self defense claim is legitimate.

Stop watching MSNBC and start getting caught up on this case. Go to this thread to see many excellent links provided by myself and others on the developments of this case.

I would still like to see the media do their f*cking job and get a history of the previous calls Zimmerman made to police.

Did he only call in black people, or did he sometimes call in white or hispanic (or even white hispanic) people too?

BadgerHawk on March 28, 2012 at 12:11 PM

Lee is a racist. He hates people because they are white. In Do The Right Thing he gets pissed at the Italian who owns the pizza parlor because he has pictures of Italians on the walls. The owner should have told him “Hey Spike – open your own pizza parlor and put up whatever picture you want. The problem Spike is that most blacks have been trained to be dependent on what someone else does. You never engage in commerce. Tell me Spike – why do Asians who can’t speak English have to open stores in your ghettos so you can use your food stamps?”

The skinny kid you have been referencing has not existed for several years except in photographs provided by the family. He is NOT the person Zimmerman saw that fateful day.

However, Lee tweeted the wrong address — twice — and instead put an elderly couple at risk:

Wrong address? If the elderly couple was white then it wouldn’t be the wrong address for Lee. It would just be a bonus address. If the elderly couple is Jewish then a double bonus address for Lee. You don’t seem to know much about Lee. In any case, I am sure the Lyncher-in-Chief will voice no objection and if he does he will be lying.
