Spike Lee does the wrong thing

posted at 11:00 am on March 28, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

On more than one occasion regarding the subject of the Trayvon Martin shooting, I have warned people about jumping to conclusions ahead of a thorough investigation.  Unfortunately, we have a great demonstration of exactly how that can have potentially deadly consequences.  Filmmaker Spike Lee thought he’d teach George Zimmerman a lesson by tweeting his home address to the world, apparently hoping for a little vigilante justice.  However, Lee tweeted the wrong address — twice — and instead put an elderly couple at risk:

Filmmaker Spike Lee made waves on Twitter last week when he re-tweeted to his 200,000 followers (h/t Twitchy) what was thought to be George Zimmerman’s home address in Sanford, Florida. Mr. Zimmerman told Sanford police last month that he fatally shot 17 year old Trayvon Martin in self-defense.

However, the Edgewater Circle address Mr. Lee re-tweeted out is not part of the gated Retreat at Twin Lakes where the shooting took place and where Mr. Zimmerman lives. The area is not even a gated community.

In fact, I took a drive to that Edgewater Circle address that so many on Twitter re-tweeted and cursed, and I discovered through a neighbor, named Tim, who lives across the street from the address, that not only does George Zimmerman not live at the lakeside house but a woman by the name of Elaine does.

As of this morning, Lee has not removed the tweets from his feed, according to Twitchy.  Perhaps Lee will “do the right thing” by this morning and delete them, because the couple that does live at the address Lee tweeted are understandably frightened about their safety.  The Smoking Gun reports on the McClains and the attention they have received from Lee’s messaging:

In an interview tonight, Elaine McClain told TSG that she and her husband were “afraid” due to the online linking of her address to Zimmerman. “We’re keeping everything locked,” she said. McClain added that the couple was particularly unnerved by a letter mailed to them at their home. On the envelope, she said, were printed the words “Taste The Rainbow,” the slogan for Skittles. Martin was carrying a pack of Skittles and a can of ice tea when he was gunned down by Zimmerman.

McClain said her husband returned the envelope unopened to the post office.

And how did this happen?  Poor research and jumping to conclusions:

Besides overlooking the different middle initial, perhaps that answer is connected to an old voter record for a “William George Zimmerman” at the Edgewater Circle property. That registration, which dates back to 1995, is for a 41-year-old man. The Zimmerman who shot Martin is 28.

Elaine McClain identified William George Zimmerman as her son, noting that he has not lived at the Edgewater Circle residence for seven years.

Jim Treacher points out the irony in this story:

If you’re against vigilantes taking matters into their own hands, except when it comes to dealing with George Zimmerman, #YouMightBeALiberal.

I notice Spike hasn’t been working much lately. I hope he’s been saving his money. Lawyers can be expensive.

Even if the address had been correct, it still would have been the wrong thing to do.  Lee should be ashamed of himself.

The original concern in this shooting incident was that the investigation into the shooting of an unarmed 17-year-old seemed cursory and insufficient.  Thanks to the national attention the case has draw, we now have two major investigations under way, one by the Department of Justice (an investigation endorsed by Rep. Allen West) and another by the state of Florida.  While it’s unlikely that the media will stop reporting tidbits of the story without knowing their full context, the rest of us should wait to see what facts can be established by these two investigations before jumping to any more conclusions — and before putting innocent people at risk like the McClains.

Update: Danny Glover puts Lee and Marcus Higgins in the Twitter Hall of Shame.

Now I can believe that the paramedics can clean up some blood, but you’re telling me they can close and heal lacerations with no stitches? You’re telling me that a broken and bloody nose doesn’t have *any* bruises, any evidence of medical tape. Nothing? And you’re telling me that a man whose head was beaten against the ground repeatedly doesn’t have one single bandage on it?

libfreeordie on March 28, 2012 at 10:05 PM

LOL….nice job, Buy Danish.

You can show very easily how the racist libfreeordie’s story changes when confronted with new evidence.

You can also show how the racist libfreeordie refuses to condemn the Obama Party/DNC bounty on Zimmerman, as well as Spike Lee’s racist rants pushing a white family out of their home.

northdallasthirty on March 28, 2012 at 10:09 PM

The problem again, Dreadnought, is that libfreeordie is trying to spin a narrative.

The liar cannot deal with what his Obama/DNC has done, including their support of the illegal Black Panther bounty AND how Spike Lee’s calls for lynching have driven a white family out of their home.

Thus the liar has to scream and cry and make all sorts of accusations without proof or evidence, including calling the entire Sanford police department liars.

northdallasthirty on March 28, 2012 at 10:13 PM

The claim from Zimmerman’s lawyer and the Sanford PD is that Trayvon beat Zimmerman so badly that he was in fear of losing his life. Instead of being afraid that he may simply lose a fight he started.

No nimrod, the paramedics checking Zimmerman out doesn’t explain why he has *zero* injury. You don’t seem to have a basic understanding of the term “life threatening beating” and what paramedics can do in 15 minutes.

It doesn’t, Buy Danish.

It’s simply screaming, crying, and throwing a tantrum, trying to deflect and spin away from the fact that it and its Barack Obama Party are calling for a Hispanic man to be lynched, are putting out illegal bounties, and are driving white families from their homes because it and its Obama supporters like Spike Lee are pushing lies.

The test is not whether the beating was in fact life threatening in the damage that was inflicted. The test is whether the victim felt his life was in danger. There is a huge gap between those two things.

But you know that. You’re just a troll throwing your feces on the wall.

libfreeordie on March 28, 2012 at 10:14 PM

Story changing again, libfreeordie?

Seems before you were screaming that the video was taken immediately following the attack.

Now you’re screaming that paramedics never worked on Zimmerman, when records and evidence clearly prove otherwise.

The basic problem is this: you can’t explain why you called for Zimmerman to be lynched, you can’t explain why you and your Barack Obama support the illegal Black Panther bounty, and you absolutely refuse to hold your Barack Obama supporter Spike Lee responsible for his lies that have driven an elderly white couple from their home.

So all you have left is to lie and smear Zimmerman and the Sanford police — despite the fact that Spike Lee’s tweets prove that liberals like you constantly lie about evidence.

libfreeordie on March 28, 2012 at 10:14 PM

He has zero injury?

You can tell from that poor quality video that he has zero injury?

Really?

As far as bleeding from head wounds-it depends what part of the head and where the gash is-some very superficial wounds can bleed like a SOB, other, more serious wounds can actually bleed much, much less. The amount of blood from a head wound isn’t necessarily a gauge of how serious it is.

Dreadnought on March 28, 2012 at 10:22 PM

Buy Danish on March 28, 2012 at 10:13 PM

I don’t, but the lack of injury makes the police’s claims that they had “no probable cause” to arrest Zimmerman, when combined with his 911 call are suspect. When you combine that with the witnesses who claim the police tried to alter their story. The fact that the police refused to talk to the young woman who was on the phone with Travyon when he was approached by Zimmerman. The fact that we didn’t learn about investigator Chris Serino who wanted to file charges against Zimmerman but was dissuaded by superiors. And you take into account that the Sanford PD has a history of racism. All of that adds up to a less than stellar case for trusting any of the police statements.

northdallasthirty on March 28, 2012 at 10:26 PM

I see injuries on the back of Zimmermann’s head. Select the full screen option and freeze it when his back is to the camera. At one point the officer clearly walks around behind Zimmermann and looks closely at the back of his head.

I was surprised that Zimmermann was handcuffed. That doesn’t really conform with the huckster-spin that he was buddies with the police.

Yeah, weren’t we told, at one point, that those dirty, rotten cops let Zimmerman just walk away from the scene, with his gun? Odd that liefreelyor die didn’t notice the handcuffs. The cops also carefully checked him over before they brought him into the station, but I’m sure that was all just for show.

Regarding the condition of his face and head, two points.

1. I strongly suspect that it would be against the rules for cops to bring in a suspect who was bleeding.

2. I am sure that if, as we have been told, Zimmerman went to a clinic the day after the incident, that there will be a record of that.

The video proves nothing, which is just a bit short of proving that the cops lied.

I picked one at random. Earlier you stated:

The fact that the police refused to talk to the young woman who was on the phone with Travyon when he was approached by Zimmerman.

The link you provided states:

The police officer who came to Martin’s girlfriend’s house to meet with him was Investigator Chris Serino.

I’m getting a major fail vibe here. Unless they used sign language or smoke signals and the police officer didn’t technically “talk” to Martin’s GF.

Gotta call it a night….

libfreeordie on March 28, 2012 at 10:14 PM

I wasn’t there and ultimately have no idea what happened. However, the claim isn’t just that he was getting beaten but also that Trayvon tried to take his gun. At that point, it doesn’t matter how bad his injuries were, if the gun is in someone else’s hands, so is Zimmerman’s life.

Additionally, his story is that he didn’t approach Trayvon but was instead approached by him. Granted this is only Zimmerman’s side, but it does make sense when coupled with a story about Trayvon’s girlfriend saying that Trayvon noticed a man following him.

Now, I’m glad that this story has gotten more attention so that we can have a full investigation of what happened, but until then, why assume and drum up outcry on the issue? What else is supposed to be done right now? Accused people are always given the presumption of innocence, so while Zimmerman should probably be locked up for his own safety, that doesn’t mean he should already be receiving his punishment.

Esthier on March 28, 2012 at 11:33 PM

Hmmm. We’re probably going to need to see some evidence of the medical care Zimmerman received the following day.

Not that I trust HuffPo as an unbiased source, but after watching the video (without sound), I can’t see any lacerations on Zimmerman’s head or face.

Granted, paramedics at the scene could have cleaned him up, and at the point in the video when he walks in the building there’s a big glare that makes it tough to see anything, so the injuries could very well be real. I just can’t see them in the video.

He’s been asserting this was a race murder from the get-go, facts be damned. While I understand his frustration with the situation, he’s shown himself to be wildly prejudiced on several occassions, and has resorted to calling multiple other commenters racists for challenging his assertions.

He’s had his mind made up from the momemnt the story went national. The facts don’t matter, whether they ultimatley point to Zimmerman’s innocence or guilt.
