Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on March 27, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

One would think that Barack Obama would have learned a lesson about microphones always being live after his conversation with Nicolas Sarkozy about Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu got reported all over the world.  The answer to that is nyet.  Obama’s conversation with Dmitri Medvedev wasn’t just a diplomatic embarrassment this time, but a political disaster that reminded US voters why they need to fear an Obama second term:

President Obama: On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him to give me space.

President Medvedev: Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you…

President Obama: This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.

President Medvedev: I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.

Talk about handing a weapon to one’s opponents!  The Obama campaign seemed poised to use the Etch-a-Sketch comment against Mitt Romney if he won the GOP nomination, but that’s out the window now.  The RNC had a campaign ad cut before the end of the business day:

Thanks, President Obama, for practically making the one-term argument for Republicans.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

A man who makes that kind of statement to anyone–particularly the Russians, is essentially saying that it is a fait accompli. That’s the most audacious bullsh!t we’ve heard in over 500 years. Don’t the Russians know that promises from this guy come with expiration dates?? He’s promised Hispanics, gays, and all the other “victim” groups something…some carrot…on down the road. Now add the Russians to the pile.

and we get the bill, right?

I think the most chilling part of this is Emperor Hussein’s saying “last election”. It clearly points to just how awful a second term would be. It also could refer to the fact that he intends this election to be the last.

wildcat72 on March 27, 2012 at 8:22 AM

Robert Philip Hanssen (born April 18, 1944) is a former American FBI agent who spied for Soviet and Russian intelligence services against the United States for 22 years from 1979 to 2001. As of 2012, he is serving a life sentence at the Federal Bureau of Prisons Administrative Maximum facility in Florence, Colorado.

Hanssen was arrested on 18 February 2001 at Foxstone Park[2] near his home in Vienna, Virginia, and was charged with selling American secrets to Russia for more than US$1.4 million in cash and diamonds over a 22-year period.[3] On 6 July 2001, he pleaded guilty to 13 counts of espionage in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.[4][5] He was then sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His activities have been described by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Commission for the Review of FBI Security Programs as “possibly the worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history.”[6]

Despite these efforts at caution and security, he could at times be reckless. He once said in a letter to the KGB that it should emulate the management style of Mayor Richard J. Daley – a comment that easily could have led an investigator to look at people from Chicago.[54] He took the risk of recommending to his handlers that they try to recruit his closest friend, a colonel in the Army.[55] In an early letter to Cherkashin, he claims, “As far as the funds are concerned, I have little need or utility for more than the $100,000.”[56]

Behavior Patterns and Personality
Characteristics Associated with Espionage

There is no single profile of the employee who is likely to betray an employer’s trust. However, clinical assessment of Americans arrested for espionage 1 and academic research findings on white-collar criminals in general 2 do identify a number of behavior patterns and personality characteristics that are commonly found among such persons. The following are discussed in this section.
Antisocial Behavior

Vindictiveness
Narcissism/Grandiosity Paranoia
Impulsiveness/Immaturity Risk-Seeking
Inability to Form a Commitment

Individuals who betray their employer’s trust may have a propensity for violating rules and regulations. They may have a grossly inflated view of their own abilities, so that disappointment and bitterness against those who fail to recognize their special talents are inevitable. They may be inclined to regard criticism or disagreement as a personal insult that calls for revenge. They may be impulsive or immature, and predisposed to do whatever feels good at the moment. They may have drifted from one relationship or job to another, with little sense of purpose or loyalty to anyone or anything. They may engage in high-risk activities without thinking about the consequences.

Sometimes these weaknesses are so severe that they can be clinically diagnosed as symptoms of a mental, emotional, or personality disorder. More often, however, they are better described as behavioral or personality weaknesses rather than as psychological “disorders.” When these behaviors are reported, consultation with a psychologist may be appropriate.

wildcat72 on March 27, 2012 at 8:24 AM

I’m not sure I’d go that far but I do know that public schools do not encourage critical thinking. If the individual indoctrinating the children declares that the Jews are evil, any challenge to that will be dealt with in a negative way.

Of course, that has always been the case. I had a teacher who was so depressed when Jimmy Carter lost that she called in sick. The irony is that the substitute was the president of the local Republican Womens’ Club and we spent the class saying something nice about Carter and something we wanted Reagan to do during his first term.

WASHINGTON — The FBI has arrested 10 people for allegedly serving for years as secret agents of Russia’s intelligence organ, the SVR, with the goal of penetrating U.S. government policymaking circles.

According to court papers unsealed Monday, the FBI intercepted a message from SVR headquarters, Moscow Center, to two of the defendants describing their main mission as “to search and develop ties in policymaking circles in US.” Intercepted messages showed they were asked to learn about a broad swath of topics including nuclear weapons, U.S. arms control positions, Iran, White House rumors, CIA leadership turnover, the last presidential election, the Congress and political parties.

Best be sure an Operative isn’t in play — remember how that worked out. The puppet theater isn’t the only thing going.

Prufrock on March 27, 2012 at 9:58 AM

Not treason — coordination with other heads of state is called negotiation, and happens all the time.

The real question is whether the negotiation demonstrates him to be a callow, self-serving wretch with no clear vision of the shape of the world.

And yes, it does.

He is truly the One that they’ve been waiting for:
China
Russia
OPEC
Venezuala
Europe
Islam
All the ‘istans’

It’s hard to see how this doesn’t become the Obamateurism of the Year. But I sure hope he finds a way to top this . . . before Election Day.

Prufrock on March 27, 2012 at 10:01 AM

Yes treason.

Happy Nomad on March 27, 2012 at 10:09 AM

Hey, it was just small talk from one mob boss to another.

docflash on March 27, 2012 at 8:44 AM

At least the mob has protocol and honor.
.
.
Obama? Neither.

Martin had been suspended from school for MJ use. He wasn’t a little boy as Juanito Williams has been calling him. He was 6’3″ and a football player.
Getting back to the topic. Putin will never fit under Zero’s bus. I’m sure he’d like for president per se to be reelected because he knows he’s a fellow traveler hoping to reshape this country and the world into a communist/Marxist state.

Kissmygrits on March 27, 2012 at 10:16 AM

Have you come up with a cool name for this fake scandal yet? /crr6

Yeah, ‘Obama’s an Idiot-in-Thief’ should cover most of them.

Russia is the enemy and always has been. Just because the cold war ‘ended’ didn’t mean they went away. Putin is trying his best to subvert American interests around the globe, most notably through concerted cyber-warfare actions.

So…it’s not all that surprising that Baroque wants to appease them.

CorporatePiggy on March 27, 2012 at 11:18 AM

Thanks, President Obama, for practically making the one-term argument for Republicans.

What am I missing? – he does that daily with both deeds and words.

President Obama: This is my last election. After my election loss I have more flexibility……

to work on my golf game
to play and watch basketball
to allow Mochelle to tend to her garden in our new Chicago home
to write my third autobiography; One and Done.
to entertain my 2500 press secretaries aka the media.
to continue to tell others what to do while I do what I want.
to stumble off the teleprompter
