Video: Zimmerman friend calls for patience in investigation

posted at 12:10 pm on March 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Fox’s Martha MacCallum interviews a friend of the shooter in the Trayvon Martin case, George Zimmerman, on the reaction to the case, the assumptions of the media, and the political lessons being applied ahead of the facts. Joe Oliver tells MacCallum that race had nothing to do with this case, and the best action everyone can take now is to let the investigations take place and the facts be established:

Oliver agrees with Florida Governor Rick Scott in saying that this is not a test case for the Stand Your Ground law, either. Given what we know of the case — and if that understanding doesn’t change — then that’s correct. By following a suspected prowler, that law doesn’t apply, but the laws of self-defense still very well might, which are separate from SYG, which provides further clarification to the core rights of self-defense. It depends greatly on what took place, what happened with the gun, and the level of threat that occurred if the gun was fired intentionally, all points that are terribly unclear at the moment.

We have been receiving plenty of e-mail on this subject, as one might imagine, and most of it wondering why we’re not posting the latest assumptions and second-hand assertions in this matter. It’s because we are inclined to take Joe Oliver’s advice and let the professional investigators establish the facts first, rather than speculation on what kinds of activities in which the two men involved in the incident may have taken part in the past, whether hoodies are as much to blame as the gun, and so on. Zimmerman and Martin’s family deserve a thorough investigation and the establishment of the facts of the case, and once that happens, we will know how to proceed with this case.

One last point: Let’s remember that our fundamental rights to keep and bear arms and to act in our own self-defense do not rest on one case. We should defend those who act within the law, but we should also take care to know the facts before we come to that defense. That’s one lesson all of us, and I’m not excepting myself, can learn from this case before the investigation is complete.

Has the actual transcript of Martin’s phone call with his girlfriend been released yet? Can any of the claims from this phone call be corroborated?

cmsciulli on March 27, 2012 at 12:04 PM

I doubt there is a transcript to be released – not a recorded call (one must assume).
The 911 calls are recorded and transcribed – not personal calls.

Dave, I’d give it up till some new evidence comes out. (And it might). But for now, that newscast blew your narrative away.

Good advice. We passed the point of fruitful conversation pretty quick this morning.

Having a preponderance of facts on one side of the argument will tend to do that.

cmsciulli on March 27, 2012 at 12:04 PM

Eyewitnesses state that Martin confronted Zimmerman when he was walking back to his car, punched him in the face breaking his nose and knocking him down, then pounding his head on the concrete sidewalk.

I’d imagine eyewitnesses and physical evidence would trump whatever the girl thought she heard on a cellphone.

You have to remember, it was three full weeks before the “outrageous outrage” began over this incident. The whole thing was orchestrated, with the photoshopped image, carefully managed narrative, the works.

cmsciulli on March 27, 2012 at 12:19 PM

Huh? Because the photo they posted was intended to make readers believe that Trayvon was just a “typical thug” and therefore Zimmerman must have been justified. Its a smear *even if it was a photo of him* because it attempts to play on people’s fears of “thuggish” looking black men. Its even MORE of a smear since they posted it without (apparently) even looking at it. The photo looks NOTHING like Trayon Martin. You’re trying to seem objective, but if you really don’t understand why the photo is a smear I suspect you’re closer to the Blake/Geraldo theory wherein young black men who wear the wrong clothes or who make a few teenage mistakes like smoking pot deserve what’s coming from the George Zimmerman’s of the world.

libfreeordie on March 27, 2012 at 10:11 AM

Oh come on, your side has done worse. You have the New Black Panther Party trying to lynch Zimmerman, and you have Jackson & Sharpton raising the hate level. Obama commented on it without any facts at all in support of Trayon.

The simple fact, no matter what happens from this point forward, is the case is more complex than how your side is portraying it. It was your side, the left wing, that politicized this case for its own reasons. You keep calling Zimmerman “white”, even though his mother is Hispanic, and he calls himself Hispanic, in order to scare African Americans that the great white conservative horde is coming out of the mountain to “get them”. Your side is trying to protray Zimmerman as some racist nutcase out hunting blacks, and Trayon Martin as a symbol of innocent purity, cut down by the “white man”.

I will tell you this, if more people end up losing their lives over this because of the lynch mob mentality people like you have created the blood will be on your hands….including the President.

So, that’s a smear, but the media, including FoxNews, continually displaying nothing but a “mugshot” of Zimmerman isn’t?

You keep saying that Martin’s school record means nothing. That simply is NOT true. You have inadvertantly MADE it relevant, by claiming that Martin couldn’t possibly be the aggressor in the situation. His Tweets to his friends, and his little baggie in his backpack seem to indicate that he was, at miminum, a user.

If he was using and selling marijuana and burglarizing apartments, or had “friends” who were, that lends credence to Zimmerman’s assertions that he was “acting suspiciously.”

And stop repeating that “deserved what’s coming to him” BS. It’s crap and you know it.

The posters were circulated during a press conference led by Minister Mikhail Muhummud, who said he is the southern regional director for the New Black Panther Party in Jacksonville, Florida.

President Obama said today the nation needs to do some “soul searching” over the shooting death of unarmed African-American teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida.

They’ve ceased to be unbiased reporters and are willing to condem a man who may be guilty of nothing more than poor judgement in order to push their partisan agenda.

The only reason I’m wasting my time pushing back against the idiocy flowing from many lefty commenters here is because if the narrative is allowed to go unchallenged, this type of behavior will never stop.

The facts and truth do matter. One life is already gone. It would be a travesty to ruin another one just to reinforced a worldview.

Equal? Seeing racism when there’s no evidence for that? Calling a 17 year old young man a “child?” I’ve been all over sites where liberals abound, and I can’t count the number of people who have called Zimmerman a murderer, and calling anyone who disagrees racist. Even one of MY 17 year old son’s friends was ragging on this and claiming that the kid was “hunted down and shot because he was black.” It’s been a pure, unadulterated propaganda campaign from the race baiters. Also Monday, an attorney for Martin’s mother confirmed that she filed trademark applications for two slogans containing her son’s name: “Justice for Trayvon” and “I Am Trayvon.” The applications said the trademarks could be used for such things as DVDs and CDs.

The trademark attorney, Kimra Major-Morris, said in an email that Fulton wants to protect intellectual property rights for “projects that will assist other families who experience similar tragedies.”

verbaluce on March 27, 2012 at 4:26 PM

No, I don’t “see” that, because it’s not true, and if projecting your own propensity for bias onto me, is the only response you can come with to what I posted, it’s an epic fail…

…but you knew that.

Now, you’re just being silly. This is completely irrelevant.

JannyMae on March 27, 2012 at 6:04 PM

Detailed police report of incident here. Lots of interesting details the media has been ignoring.

RepubChica on March 27, 2012 at 6:53 PM

All that info was made available early on:

http://www.sanfordfl.gov/index.html

http://www.sanfordfl.gov/investigation/docs/Zimmerman_Martin_shooting.pdf

I think one of the reasons why Bill Lee stepped down was because both he and his family were getting death threats.

Blake on March 27, 2012 at 7:01 PM

I’m going to adjourn from this thread soon, but before I do, does anyone know of a site that’s following this case, where I can find new info as it comes out?

Blake on March 27, 2012 at 7:01 PM

It’s possible. I have seen no credible evidence that he stepped down because the investigation was (allegedly) botched. The statement issued seems to put that idea to rest. As you said earlier, they’re politicizing this, which increases the odds that Zimmerman gets railroaded.

JannyMae on March 27, 2012 at 8:34 PM

Fact: If heBHO’s professor pal had followed instructions from the cops and not followed the kid none of this would have happened.

Currently, there is a lot of back peddling in the msm about the case. However, there is also a rumor that the special prosecutor is going to file charges without a grand jury.

Apparently, no reasonable person would feel that Zimmerman’s behavior was confrontational. However, different rules apply to junior thugs who can get claim it is justification for beating you senseless.

Blake on March 27, 2012 at 10:03 PM

This so called special prosecutor appears to be horribly biased. I can’t believe her statements to the press: http://goo.gl/7ca1r

Zimmerman is going to be indicted. They are afraid not to do it.

Uh oh, Zimmerman’s ex brought domestic violence charges against him, seems like dude was a violent hot head. Between that and the 2005 arrest.

Great! He’s a Democrat. Watching Democrats lynching one of their own is great fun. Show everyone what you Democrats really think of hispanics!

Popcorn!

But of course pointing out Trayvon’s past is a “smear.”

Even if this is true, which I doubt, by your standards, this is irrelevant.

Worse. The “special prosecutor” pretty much telegraphed that she is trying to file charges without a grand jury.

libfreeordie on March 27, 2012 at 11:19 PM

There was no violence. He and an ex girlfriend got into a screaming argument. She called the cops and asked for a restraining order against him. He asked for one against her. There were never any charges, doofus.

You’re just lucky that I can’t bring charges against you for murdering the truth in this thread.

Blake on March 28, 2012 at 6:02 AM

Oh, and while grabbing a cop’s arm is a no-no, the charges were diverted and dismissed. I’m sure this has already been posted in this thread. Are you going to continue mis-stating facts?

Let’s talk about Martin’s 3 rather lengthy suspensions in approx. 4 months. Drugs, theft, graffit — the ABCs for thugs and gansta wannabees.

Blake on March 28, 2012 at 6:07 AM

Those who are angriest about alleged racism in the Trayvon case are the most likely to be racist.

Spike Lee, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, & lots of others are tripping over themselves in their eagerness to prove this point.

itsnotaboutme on March 28, 2012 at 8:06 AM

Hahaha! The prosecutor has been whining about leaks from the police dept while their own office is leaking all over the place.
