Romney hits Obama: Russia is our “number one geopolitical foe”; Update: Video fixed

posted at 9:27 pm on March 26, 2012 by Allahpundit

An odd line in the course of an otherwise solid attack on Obama’s dumb “hot mic” comment this morning. As you’ll see, he has something specific in mind with the term “foe” and it’s not equivalent to “threat,” but I think most people who see the soundbite version of this clip will understand it that way and come away puzzled. If you gut-check Americans on what our biggest foreign-policy problem is, the answers you’re most likely to get, I’ll bet, are Iran, Pakistan/Al Qaeda, and China. Russia is, as Romney says, frequently a stumbling block to America’s agenda abroad — look no further than Syria — but I think most of the public sees it as a fading power whose primacy of place in U.S. threat assessments was lost after the Cold War. Seems odd for the presumptive GOP nominee to suddenly name them public enemy number one.

Doesn’t much matter, as the point here is to attack Obama, not Russia, and Romney does a good job of it. Can’t wait for that first Romney/Putin summit, though. Oh well: At least our “number one geopolitical foe” won’t be surprised when European missile defense is suddenly back in vogue.

Update: Sorry, had the wrong video posted initially.

promachus on March 26, 2012 at 9:35 PM

Actually Russia has slipped to #3 amongst our foes. I’d list them as:

1. islamists
2. China
3. Soviet Russia (it will ALWAYS be Soviet Russia to me)

The Russians go along with China just to try to remain relevant, when, in fact they are even more degenerate and failing than Europe. Their rate of native population birth is so abysmal they will be a Krapistan themselves before long.

Still, nice to see Romney actually go after Barry. He needs to start doing more of this. This will help him seal the deal. He needs to prove he will campaign as hard against Barry as he has against his primary opponents. If he does that, he WILL win. If he doesn’t, he will lose. It’s that simple.

“Russia is our number one geo-political foe” is a gaffe Romneybots albeit not a huge gaffe. Romney backtracks in the interview himself. What’s disheartening is that this is what an outraged Romney looks like. First, the President just assumed he’s getting re-elected and Romney didn’t challenge him on that. Second, Obama essentially says he will appease Russia and Romney says he’s “troubled” 5-6 times. Such a fighter this guy.

Russia is, as Romney says, frequently a stumbling block to America’s agenda abroad — look no further than Syria — but I think most of the public sees it as a fading power whose primacy of place in U.S. threat assessments was lost after the Cold War.

Romney is correct geo politically Russia is blocking us in the middle east, and effecting our economical recovery through keeping the price of a barrel of oil inflated.

Iran is a Russian client state. Iran has nuclear ambitions, their nuclear activities are running up the price of a barrel of oil. Who sells oil, and benefits from having $106.00 per barrel of oil? Russia.Iran is a Russian proxy in a low level nuclear race with the United States. The last Nuclear race worked out so well for Russia. Then there is that natural gas pipe line to Europe, Russia wants to monopolize. Russia is using Iran to keep Europe under their thumb…Iran doesn’t threaten the United States, it doesn’t have a missile that will reach our shores, but they are working on one that will reach Europe. When Russia has Europe firmly dependent on Russian energy, will Putin dictate who the Euros can trade with? Like say European’s old trading partner the United States? I don’t know what Obama meant by wait till I am reelected, I will have more flexibility to do what? Leave Europe completely defenseless to Russian dominance? In away the Euros did that to themselves when they adopted the socialist democracy model. I don’t have a lot of sympathy for Western Europe. You sow the wind you reap the whirlwind.

Romney is right. Foe was the right word to use, no need to raise the rhetoric with a stronger word. If Romney’s elected in November, it’s Romney’s administration that has to deal with Putin in the future. No need poisoning a well, you may have to drink from later.

Dr Evil on March 26, 2012 at 10:11 PM

We can disagree whether Russia is our “number one” foe, but to call those who disagree or criticize Romney a “hater” doesn’t help.

conservative pilgrim on March 26, 2012 at 10:12 PM

Romney is a wuss …none of his many sons nor he served their country in the military…how utterly cowardly and pathetic.

Perry/West America needs cojones now!

Pragmatic on March 26, 2012 at 10:09 PM

People such as yourself will never be pleased by anything Romney does. He could tack so far right and initiate a hardcore conservative agenda in office and you’d STILL be uttering stupid crap like this.

Good on you Rmoney, pound the nails in his coffin. pound. Harder!

The only way anyone can think this is a gaffe, is if they do not know the meaning of the word “foe”

tbrickert on March 26, 2012 at 10:08 PM

Well, it does kind of seem there are a lot who don’t. . .

No, no. It isn’t a matter of disagreeing. It’s a matter of knowing that if someone else (cough sarah palin cough), those very same people would be praising her insights.

It isn’t a matter of disagreeing, it’s a matter of folks here who, in the past, would support such a notion, find themselves downplaying the threat that Russia presents to global stability and US efforts abroad.

THAT is what it is about.

You know, if Sarah Palin had said this, the HotAir crowd would be praising her foreign policy chops.

blatantblue on March 26, 2012 at 9:59 PM

Doubt she would make a gaffe like this.

In all seriousness, that’s not what he said. To paraphrase Santorum: What clip where you listening to? Stop distorting his words! That’s b*llsh!t! You don’t care about the truth!

Dark Star on March 26, 2012 at 10:12 PM

Starts at 2:25. Take a listen.

conservative pilgrim on March 26, 2012 at 10:17 PM

Sounds like Romney will be pressing the reset button yet again. Poor Hillary.
