Obama to Medvedev: I’ll totally cave on missile defense in my second term if Putin will give me “space”

posted at 8:40 am on March 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Ah, open microphones at photo ops.  Is there anything they can’t expose?  And is there any lesson about them that Barack Obama can learn?  Five months after reporters picked up a conversation in which Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy disparaged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamim Netanyahu, Obama forgot to check the microphones yet again in a conversation with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev.  This time, however, the microphones picked up the sound of Obama begging for some political help from Vladimir Putin — in order to gain the “flexibility” to cave on missile defense:

President Obama: On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him to give me space.

President Medvedev: Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you…

President Obama: This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.

President Medvedev: I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.

This, to quote our Vice President, is “a big f*****g deal.”  What solution does Obama envision that would pay off for Putin so much that the Russians would agree to the “space” necessary by keeping quiet about US plans for its deployment?  The only possible answer would be the dismantling of even the smaller missile-defense system to which Obama committed in 2009.  And it looks as though Obama has already tipped his hand to the Russians — against whom this particular defense system would be mainly ineffective anyway — in exchange for political assistance to influence the election.

Scott Johnson says that this is a “space program” he can’t support:

The man has big plans for us — the kind of plans he won’t be sharing with the American people. Not yet.

Something tells me this next election is a big one. Let’s kill Obama’s “space” program.

Obama won’t share these plans with the American people. However, he’ll share them with the Russians, and ask for their help in influencing the election.  That should tell American voters all they need to know about this President.

Or perhaps not.  What other nations has Obama asked for “space” on American foreign and national-security policy so that he can win a second term?  And what American interests is Obama willing to trade for that “space”?

I heard you prattling on about selling four more of our progeny into penury slavery today. Get lost slaver.

chemman on March 26, 2012 at 11:32 AM

Hotair has its fair share of people with paranoid theories about Obama like birtherism or him being a muslim. Yet, this clear evidence of the harm Obama will do to America if he is re-elected gets so few comments. I wonder if the people with paranoid ideas aren’t interested in real evidence, because it makes their crazy theories less important.

It is also disturbing to contemplate how many more comments there would be if the topic were gay marriage.

Well, it seems to be getting out to the “folks”. I first saw it on Yahoo as soon as I turned on the computer. That stuff is usually fluff and not interesting. This caught my eye immediately!

Better to be deranged than to be a slaver. The penury slavery you are selling our progeny into is real while the derangement is debatable. Crawl back into the hole you climbed out of.

Would love to be wrong about it (an earlier comment about it being panned). Would never be happier to be wrong, in fact. :)

This is what happens when you elect a Marxist.

Obowma said this in 2008;

The only promises Obowma does keep, continue to harm America.

Good time to nominate a Republican capon.

kenny on March 26, 2012 at 11:38 AM

This is hardly a surprise. We already know:

1. Obama is in Putin’s back pocket.
2. Obama knows he will easily win re-election against Romney.

Romney hating isn’t going to accomplish anything good, but this is exceptionally illogical. If Obama knows he will easily defeat Romney, why did he offer this deal to Russia?

thuja on March 26, 2012 at 11:59 AM

“Flexibility”? Only if you start taking those yoga classes after we blow your azz out in Nov.

Xyz22 on March 26, 2012 at 12:10 PM

I wonder what would happen to a reporter who had the guts to ask the president to clarify what he meant by “space” and “flexibility”.

LibraryGryffon on March 26, 2012 at 12:22 PM

It put the hair up on my neck. I truly think he will steal the election and NEVER leave the WH.

I am officially scared of him.

Won’t happen.

I’m not saying he won’t TRY it, but it won’t happen.

As I said (above), he’s not popular enough anymore for a populist coup to succeed. Plus, coups are NOT in our national or political nature.

If Obama rigs the election to the extent he’d have to in order to “win” or if he refused to LEAVE OFFICE in January, he’d not be ruling from the White House, he’d have to hide in some bunker somewhere from the US Military and pretty much everyone ELSE.

It’d be the shortest lived dictatorship in history.

wildcat72 on March 26, 2012 at 11:32 AM

Much easier for him to award citizenship to illegal aliens through executive order. That would mean democratics would rule the nation for a hundred years.

Sounds like the end is coming, patriots. Better stock up on bullets, cheetos and Slim Jims!

“Yet, this clear evidence of the harm Obama will do to America if he is re-elected gets so few comments.”

The most vocal readers are already occupied with other much more important Presidential issues, like making sure we all know how much they hate Mitt Romney. Because, you know, choosing a President based on how proud you feel when you vote for them has produced such awesome results thus far.

GalosGann on March 26, 2012 at 12:33 PM

The derangement is real.

0bamaderangementsyndrom on March 26, 2012 at 11:32 AM

Yes, your derangement is REAL. You even took the extra effort to make it emphasized in your handle.

Chuck Schick on March 26, 2012 at 12:50 PM

How is this not treason? Give me space to be reelected so I can weaken our security? And our GOP once again will betray us to avoid the “distaste” of impeaching the WON.

AH_C on March 26, 2012 at 1:14 PM

Jimmy “The Mullah” Carter did basically the same thing … beg the Russians to help him with the election.

Karmi on March 26, 2012 at 1:26 PM

The biggest problem I see with Obama and his followers is, the man honestly thinks he has a clue. There’s nothing worse than a person in power who has absolutely no clue about the reality in which he operates. Obama’s certainty despite the serious depths of his ignorance is frightening.

PorchDawg on March 26, 2012 at 1:32 PM

Yet another feather on the cap for Obama to show that he’s a huckster plain and simple. He’s willing to sell out the defense of our nation and allies just so he can get elected again; remarkably pathetic. A Ronald Reagan this man is not!

Heftyjo on March 26, 2012 at 2:08 PM

Sounds like the Manchurian Candidate got caught with the mic exposed. Putin lays down the Queen of Diamonds and Obama obeys.

For historical reference: Both Cater and Kennedy appealed to the Russians to influence our elections. Hmmm. Carter, Kennedy, Obama…now what do they have in common besides provable treason?

From The Obama Timeline (1981-1984 section):

“Obama writes an anti-war article for Columbia University’s magazine, Sundial. ‘Breaking the War Mentality’ contains grammatical errors, atrocious punctuation, bad spelling, and contradictory statements. …In the article Obama bemoans the fact that the military’s introduction of additional Pershing II and Cruise Missiles will ‘cut down (the) warning time for the Soviets to less than ten minutes,’ suggesting that Obama apparently prefers a U.S. policy that gives the Soviets as much advance warning as possible in order to provide them with a better chance of defeating the United States.”

Colony14 on March 26, 2012 at 4:30 PM

Incredible. Sounds like two old buds chatting over the fence about their fishing plans for next weekend.

I doubt he uses the same tone when he’s speaking to his own countrymen in the opposite Party.

God help us. And remember the MSM’s role in all of this.

Cleombrotus on March 26, 2012 at 10:46 PM

I don’t see what the big deal here is. The president is just saying he’ll be out of a job after the election, freeing up more time for yoga. Everyone knows what a fitness buff Putin is, so Medvedev is probably just supposed to tell Putin he should prepare for a friendly fencing match or something.

simons on March 26, 2012 at 10:57 PM

Obama agreed to let Iran have nukes if they gave him quiet in Iraq for withdrawl. Letters to mullahs from then candidate.

Rea1ityCheck on March 26, 2012 at 11:11 PM

Just saw the YouTube video of the conversation. The body language of the man after the exchange is even more chilling.

Cleombrotus on March 26, 2012 at 11:20 PM

In a sane world, this should be the end of his presidency. That comment, caught on tape, is that of a US President promising to a known enemy of this country, the dismantling the defensive posture of the US. He is exchanging a rhetorical cease fire during his election campaign for a capitulation following re-election.

How about it MSM? You going to show your true communist colors again, or are you going to commit a random act of journalism and report this to the extent it deserves?

/yeah, I probably know the answer

AZfederalist on March 26, 2012 at 11:29 PM

The Russians are a regional force, at best. To even take these third world beggars seriously is a joke. The question at hand is not wether we should build this missle shield, we should. The question is why are we elevating the Russians as equals. At the height of the Cold War, Ronald Reagan told them we werent about just matching them we were about defeating them.
That is the difference between this President and all the other ones before him. He wants to see this country split from its natural allies. The Poles, Chechs, Hungarians, any former members of the Warsaw Pact. They know first hand what communism can do to a society.
Obama was raised by Communists. His parents met in a Russian language class. In the 1950s You took Russian for one of three reasons: Your family backround was Russian, you wanted to work for the State dept./CIA or you wanted to be a better communist.
His folks were not Russian and they did not work for the State Dept/CIA.
Treason is an ugly word but it is the only word that fits.

If this doesn’t raise national outrage even to the level of Clark Gable’s line in Gone With The Wind in 1939, you know the Republic is finished.
