Doctor: Cheney doing “remarkably well, amazingly well” after heart transplant

posted at 9:02 pm on March 26, 2012 by Allahpundit

A terrific little scoop by ABC. Apparently, he’s already out of bed and able to sit in a chair. Amazing.

He got the call that a donor heart would soon be available just after midnight on Saturday morning. By 5 p.m. that afternoon, the procedure was done.

“The surgery went flawlessly,” Dr. Reiner told ABC News. “It exceeded expectations.”…

“The organ has functioned terrifically. There can still be challenges, but so far, so good,” Dr. Reiner said. “So far so very good.”

If recovery continues without significant setback, Dr. Reiner says Cheney’s prognosis is “excellent” and that he could live “many, many years” with his new heart.

“If you ask is it reasonable for a patient, like this patient, to consider 10 years, yes, I think that’s reasonable,” Dr. Reiner said. “And good quality life.”

He made it “explicitly clear” to his doctors that he wanted no preferential treatment on the waiting list. (According to them, that’s impossible anyway.) Read this piece too noting that it’s relatively rare but not unheard of anymore for patients of Cheney’s age (71) to receive transplants, although there are still some hospitals that won’t do them for people over 65. No one’s quite sure why he waited more than a year and a half for the transplant, but it may have to do with his health having improved over time thanks to his “heart mate” device to the point where the surgery became viable for him whereas it hadn’t been before. In fact, according to one doctor interviewed by ABC, it’s precisely because he’s had so many heart surgeries that his recovery from this one could be relatively easy. I don’t quite grasp the science of that — as he gets older and endures more surgical trauma, you’d think he’d be progressively weakened — but it’s good news, needless to say.

Here he is last year talking about his “heart mate.”

So, now he finally has a heart?

Just quoting the Leftist drones. I’m sure crap like this has been flying on Twitter since it was first announced.

While I appreciate the sentiment, Nukem, sadly I cannot agree.

Mr. Cheney has served this country above and beyond whats been asked of him, all for lousy pay and the undeserved scorn from those that consider themselves (in their minds) our moral & intellectual “betters”.

If he decided to just throw up his hands and walk away from it all, I wouldn’t fault him in the least.

However if he decided to climb back in the ring for one last round, then by God, that man has as much heart as a Battalion of Marines…

And to that I say God Bless You, sir!

BlaxPac on March 26, 2012 at 9:34 PM

It’s too bad he didn’t get a heart transplant 15 years ago, then he could have run for POTUS when Bush/Cheney’s term was over. That would have ruined life for the lefties.

I posted something on Fox News website and I will never do it again. My email was filled with hateful responses. How can people say such vile things about someone they do not know?

I know most of us do not like Obama, but if he were in the same situation, would be be saying such hateful things when the man has been out of office for over three years and he could lose his life with this kind of surgery? I don’t think we hate as much as the left does.
God Bless Dick Cheney and his family, may he outlive those jerks that responded with such hateful emails to me. I also want to thank the donor’s family, they don’t pick the person it goes to, it is supposed to be anonymous.

Isn’t it amazing how the science of medicine has progressed over the last 30-40 years? That someone with such life-long heart disease could be made stronger with an implantable device? That a heart transplant can be done so routinely and the patient recover such a full life? That 71 years is no longer considered the very old?

Absolutely amazing!

I read elsewhere today that 1/3 of the babies born this year will live to 100. Another tribute to modern medicine.

Common Sense on March 26, 2012 at 11:05 PM

No one’s quite sure why he waited more than a year and a half for the transplant,

God waited to provide a donor heart until the Supreme Court arguments on Obamacare were ready to begin.

Reminding people that Obamacare would be unlikely to let senior citizens have transplants is just one more way for Dick Cheney to be of service to our country at a critically important time.

Thank you Mr. Vice President! Best wishes for a rapid recovery from this surgery! May you have a long and happy life!
