Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:00 am on March 25, 2012 by Allahpundit

A merciful reprieve from GOP primary politics this morning (except on CBS). Paul Ryan will be on “Fox News Sunday” and “Face the Nation” to patiently explain to Americans yet again that Medicare as they know it will soon be over whether they pass his budget or not. And Obama honcho David Plouffe will hit four of the five morning shows to patiently explain that Paul Ryan hates your grandma and also that ObamaCare is a wonderful program worth celebrating, even if the guy whose name it carries would rather talk about anything else.

Special bonus for legal eagles and con-law junkies: With Supreme Court oral arguments set to begin tomorrow, there’s bound to be lots of chatter this morning about the constitutionality of the mandate. The full line-up via WaPo:

NBC’s Meet the Press: White House senior adviser David Plouffe; Rachel Maddow, MSNBC; former Gov. Haley Barbour (R-MS); Ben Jealous, NAACP; Michele Norris, NPR; Doris Kearns Goodwin, presidential historian; David Brooks, New York Times

CBS’ Face the Nation: Rick Santorum (R-PA); Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI); Sen. Chuck Schumer (R-NY)

ABC’s This Week: White House senior adviser David Plouffe; Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN); George Will, ABC; Cokie Roberts, ABC; Donna Brazile, Democratic strategist; Matthew Dowd, political strategist; Terry Moran, ABC

Fox News Sunday: White House senior adviser David Plouffe; Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI); Brit Hume, Fox News; Kirsten Powers, The Daily Beast; Paul Gigot, Wall Street Journal; Juan Williams, Fox News

State of the Union with Candy Crowley: White House senior adviser David Plouffe; Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC); Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL); Mike Duffy, Time; Susan Page, USA Today

Something’s wrong. I’m losing my junkie mojo.

Mainstream ignores a Santorum win……but it would be a Punditgasm if It was a Romney win.

As far as the Ryan plan?………once again, Granny goes off the cliff because SoundByte Americans only hear the words “cuts to Medicare” and they don’t hear anything else.

Try the two step PAPPY PLAN

1. Seal the border ( build a wall, a moat whatever it takes to keep the Illegals out).
This would save state entitlement programs by the score, not to mention Federal budget pressures from people using Medicare, food stamps, Unemployment assistance and even grant money and other tuition assistance in some states.

2. 10% Across the board federal spending cuts.
I mean CUTS.

Call them “enhancements” if you want to.

Find a word that works but “enhance” the spending plan $350 billion less this year , and if the budget proposed is $3 trillion next year then across the board cut/enhance the budget $300 billion on that budget, and then the following year $275 billion in “spending enhancements”, etc. This process is “shared sacrifice” and easily understandable. Masking the language used is just a plus.

That’s the problem of the stupid party…….they don’t play the game well.

Ben Jealous from the NAACP will be on MTP, you better believe they’ll be talking about the Trayvon Martin case.

It will be interesting to see if the bounty the New Black Panthers have offered for George Zimmerman will be mentioned.

Or that Spike Lee tweeted Zimmerman’s home address out to his followers 2 days ago and it’s still being retweeted this morning.

Flora Duh on March 25, 2012 at 9:02 AM

It’s not just Mediscam that is coming to an end regardless of what happens, it’s ALL OTHER PROGRAMS. All it will take is a single failed treasury auction and government will HAVE to run only on the money it has because there won’t BE any other option.

Of course, Barry Hussein Soetoro knows this, and frankly, plans to try to keep the giveways going but will refuse to pay the military. Just as he did during the debt ceiling debate.

Barack Obama is obsessed with race. Why are only whites the ones who are called racist? Didn’t something like 9/10 blacks vote for Obama?

I feel bad for the victim of that FL shooting, but I don’t like how people are acting as if this is a much more serious death just because of his skin color.

Another one: well said.

A LOT of people are sick of all this racial garbage. Interestingly, it all seems to originate from the same people…

I share your views, being sad that some young guy lost his life — sad ALL young guys lose their lives, and in fact, all guys, all PEOPLE…just sad that people continue to be victims of violent crime, anywhere, everywhere.

But the people who complain about “other people” being “racist” (that means everyone except them and their voting interests, apparently) are the same people who refuse to address the source of most of the violent crime.

Just saying, Blacks have a real problem as a race, yes, but are also by high percentages participants if not perpetrators in that violent crime.

Obama is shameless in his indecent reliance on this race-baiting he engages in. I’m sick of it, everyone I know is sick of it.

Having used twitter now through a few of these Leftmedia “storms” of these outrageously hyped-up issues (now it’s the Obama-my-son-black-racism thing using the deceased kid in Florida)…

Here’s what I’ve noticed, and it goes like clockwork with these issues on twitter:

when and if you tweet “outside the Leftmedia/Obama propaganda box,” you will be inundated with the “x-ladeeees looking for some action,” the “free IPad” and “coupons” spammer accounts.

I used to think it was random (tweet at some hour of a day or on a certain day, get the spammers), but now I see it’s directly related to what you tweet AS A CONSERVATIVE or at least if you tweet anything that runs opposite to the Leftmedia-hyperbole-storm in any given week.

And they’re all going to look pretty stupid once this investigation clears the shooter as acting in self-defense, which it sounds like he just might be, seeing as there was a witness. Hopefully all this hate being incited by Sharpton and Farrakahn and the Black Panthers doesn’t cause someone else to lose their lives in the meantime.

scalleywag on March 25, 2012 at 10:43 AM

At some point, in the not too distant future, Paul Ryan’s plans will come to be be seen by history as the moderate half-way attempts that the purists on both sides refused to support. In the end they will have propelled events to the unimaginable catastrophe ahead by refusing to contemplate the easy solution while it was viable.
The problem is growing bigger and bigger every day, and the bigger it grows the more draconian the available options become. The window is slowly closing on all the easy solutions, and if Ryan’s plans continue to fall on deaf ears and the Left keeps doubling down on stupid, the problem is going to be solved the hard way. And nobody’s going to like the collateral damage!

…so I open my paper this morning…and there is former governor Jennifer Granholm (who destroyed this state for 8 years)…wearing a ‘hoodie’ as host for “The War Room” on Current TV…she says : “The hoodie is a way of expressing support for the Martin family, and for all the sons of African-American families who bear the heavy burden of other people’s negative assumptions.”

My 18 year old is home for the weekend. All he has is hoodies. I just informed him…I’m turning them into ‘just’ sweatshirts!

I heard a few remarks yesterday on the WSJ Media-Press panel broadcast on FOX, along these lines:

– there was that Left/DNC denigration cited about the Ryan plan, saying (the Dems will say) “it throws grandma over the cliff…”

– someone else then said, “we have to start somewhere, we have to start somewhere” (after everyone rejected the Left’s “throw grandma over” ruse);

– someone else then said, about Ryan’s plan, that we can expect the Dems to denounce it (using the “throw grandma over” ruse)…

– AND then the “balance the budget” demands by part of the GOP who the panel also identified as the Republicans being an ongoing problem with our divisions among our own party…

– then the succinct conclusion:

“We have to have SOMETHING to balance the budget WITH.”

Meaning, Ryan’s Plan is a very good start toward resolving a disasterous national course based upon unmanageable, strangling debt. YES, cut spending, reduce government, BUT we (also) have to increase revenue.

I can think of a good song for Romney:

Just substitute his name in there or we could have this one as a theme song for mittens:

And now it’s up to me, and it’s time to man up.
Jesus had his time to, now it’s mine to man up.
I’m taking the reins, I’m crossing the bear
And just like Jesus, I’m growing a pair!
I’ve gotta stand up, can’t just clam up.
It’s time to man up!

There are a lot of options, but none that will be taken because the vast majority of Congress is more concerned with their relection and not the country’s future. Taking the hard steps necessary means they would be booted out of office because the general public does NOT want to hear the truth. So, they kick the can down the road. When push comes to shove, they will retire to “spend more time with their families” and let the next guy deal with it.

Here’s what Simpson-Bowles had to say on it: “Our Country faces the most predictable economic crisis in history, yet our leaders in Washington continue to play politics and avoid making the tough decision needed to solve these problems.”

These cowards need to be sent home now!

jb34461 on March 25, 2012 at 12:16 PM

There’s much more to racism than belief of superiority, Dante.
The President clearly indicated that because Trayvor was of his race, he is more important to him than if he was White, Asian, or Hispanic.
If you don’t see any problem with a president expressing that, I feel sad for you.

itsnotaboutme on March 25, 2012 at 9:16 AM

No, there isn’t. It seems, though, that you are willing to let the left hijack and redefine words to fit their own agenda. Congratulations on letting them win.

Racsim is the the belief in an inherent superiority of one race over another. Nothing more.

Dante on March 25, 2012 at 12:26 PM

Lew on March 25, 2012 at 10:44 AM

Ryan’s “plan” doesn’t solve anything and doesn’t even begin to solve anything. It isn’t a solution.

Dante on March 25, 2012 at 12:32 PM

Ryan’s plan is a down payment on a solution. It’s the best step in the right direction that’s seriously on the table now.

We’re not going to achieve a better start while Democrats still have any power.

The shooting of Trayvan Martin was indeed a tradgedy. Fortunately it will be investigated by one of the greatest law enforcement agencies anywhere the FDLE-Fla. Dept. of Law Enforcement which is made up of the finest of the best around Fla. and other states best of the best.
It is a shame however that yet another racially inspired event is not talked about at all.
seems a 13 year old white kid in Kansas City was doused with gasoline and then set afire by two other blacks yelling “this is what you deserve white boy”!
Heard anything about it yet?
Didn’t think so.

rodguy911 on March 25, 2012 at 2:23 PM

Count me among those who don’t think Ryan’s plans are enough either. To my mind, if his plan succeeds beyond his wildest expectations all that will be accomplished is to balance the books for the Federal Social Welfare State as it currently exists. That’s not good enough!
Having said that, if even this modest set of goals isn’t achievable given the current set of players and parties, how on earth is any real solution going to be adopted in time to avert the coming train wreck?
What no one seems to want to look at is the fact that the politics under the economics, needs to change before we can even approach a real set of solutions. As long as political power is measured by one’s ability to seize and reallocate other peoples’ earnings, the game of buying my neighbor’s vote with my money will go on forever. And coupled with the equally brain-dead notions of an unlimited power to spend and an unlimited power to print currency, the crash of the Federal Government is almost foreordained.
And the more we delay, the narrower the range of options gets until only the most catastrophic remain available to us.
