Quotes of the day

posted at 9:00 pm on March 24, 2012 by Allahpundit

“Now, maybe you don’t like Bill Maher. He did say truly offensive things about Sarah Palin (and many others). He wants to be able to insult and demean people and not be called on it. So his motives are hardly pure.

“But he’s right that opportunistically ginned-up outrage is filling all available media space. As Maher notes, Newt Gingrich’s attack on Robert DeNiro falls into this category; there was nothing offensive about DeNiro’s joke…

“An underlying problem here: there are no shared standards anymore. Outrage is no longer a moral or ethical or personal sensibility thing, it is a political thing, a weapon to be used against your enemies, and a public sign of your political and ideological allegiances. And if everything is offensive, then, well, nothing is.”

***

“Though his tone is light, the funnyman has a point — both about the way political parties exploit their opponents’ impolite or, sometimes, merely impolitic comments, and about the fact that the Constitution protects offensive speech. Long before Harry Truman articulated it, one of the cardinal rules of American-style democracy, was ‘If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.’ Phony umbrage is an old and increasingly tired pose.

“Mr. Maher is a strange one to make this argument, though, since it is so obviously self-serving. Though his article does not say so, he too is under fire for, among many other things, using vile words to refer to former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and calling her family ‘inbred weirdos.’

“This is rhetoric that goes beyond ridiculing or satirizing political adversaries to dehumanizing them. It encourages Americans to hate one another; or, at best, to tune one another out, as Mr. Maher recommends. He and Mr. Limbaugh both have a constitutional right to express themselves. But there are Americans who sincerely hope for civil discourse — for a nation where not every opponent is seen as an enemy. And they have a right to draw distinctions between the merely risque and the corrosively hateful, and to wish for higher standards, even from those who straddle the divide between politics and entertainment.”

***

“We’re both women who have worked in Democratic politics and the media for decades and find Bill Maher’s misogynist treatment of women candidates deeply disturbing. Coincidentally we both hail from Alaska — where women are treated as equals — so perhaps our threshold for this kind of behavior is less than here in the Lower 48.

“Mr. Maher has implicitly attempted to tie his own demeaning attacks on women to the unrelated issue of partisan-motivated fake outrage, which we agree is tiring. While others have been held to account for their sexism, Mr. Maher remains unrepentant for his attacks on women in public life.

“How can we expect women to run for office when they are essentially told to “lighten up about” and accept misogynist attacks? The Women’s Media Center has found that such attacks on women candidates have a measurable negative effect on how voters view them.

“Our message to Mr. Maher and his ilk is: Please start apologizing.”

***

“Hate him all you want, ignore him but never demand an apology. Because it is like counterfeit money, it is not real.”

***

HANNITY: The double standard is what bothers me. He is not outraged or else he gave Maher the money back, ask to get Maher the money back. But he’s afraid of angering Maher because Maher is going to attack him as being, you know, wimpy which he is.

COULTER: I actually think it was a genius plan by Maher to act like this big Democratic donor, write a million-dollar check and then say things so vulgar that Obama would be forced to give him his million dollars back. But I think conservatives have at this point maybe a hypocrisy/lying/fraud case against liberals since so many of them say things so much worse all the time. I just think we should stop acting like feminists and going around saying ‘I’m offended.’”

The double standards are everywhere. John Thompson (the old man) once was quoted as saying he didn’t have any interest in recruiting white players for his team. He has a gig doing color commentary on ESPN radio. Roy Williams, Rick Pitino, Bill Self, Tom Izzo, or any other white coach says the same thing about black players and their career would be over. Screw the left. I hate ‘em.

Unlike you Bayam…I don’t want to give anyone a pass for hateful, bigoted, rhetoric.

You keep trying to find equivalency between Richard’s uncontrolled, hateful slurs against blacks, Rush’s vicious, long rant against a woman based on her beliefs re birth control, and a comedian’s inappropriate punchline directed at a public figure.

Richards faced the wrath of liberals. So did Rush. Both men were treated similarly under similar circumstances.

I don’t want to live in a country where ‘hateful, bigoted’ rhetoric coming from George Carlin (or even someone far less funnier than Carlin) is considered unacceptable. Carlin said very ‘bigoted’ and ‘hateful’ things about organized religion but society didn’t respond with indignation and anger. Carlin was a comedian.

If you actually believe that a joke (even if completely inappropriate) delivered at a paid comedy show is comparable to a long-winded attack made by a man described by George Will and Krauthammer as a ideological leader of the conservative movement, then it’s hard to respond. Your opinion isn’t going to change.

What’s the next job title liberals are going to give out that excuses bigotry and hatred…is their a list on Obama’s desk…..

……….when did the bar get lowered so far that you could say any bigoted thing you want as long as it’s in a “punch line”…..

Cindy Munford on March 25, 2012 at 12:17 AM

OT/Headlines

Suppose Beijing decides to seize Taiwan. The U.S. is obligated to defend it militarily. But U.S. taxpayers would be funding both sides of the war — the home team, via the Pentagon budget, and the Chinese military, through the interest payments on the debt. (We’ll be bankrolling the entire People’s Liberation Army by some point this decade.) A Beijing–Taipei conflict would be, in budget terms, a U.S. civil war relocated to the Straits of Taiwan. Which is why plans for mid-century are of limited value. When the most notorious extreme callous budget-slasher of the age cannot foresee the government living within its means within the next three decades, you begin to appreciate why foreign observers doubt whether there’ll be a 2040, not for anything recognizable as “the United States.”

Stein continues to rock. Sad, sad rockage.

bayam on March 25, 2012 at 12:11 AM

God you are so pathetic…..

You have yet to respond to two main points:

1. democratic leadership like Salon,Huffington post,Daily Kos that have made vicious, hateful, bigoted accusations and rants against other people without a word of condemnation coming from you or your liberal friends.

2. If Rush tacks on “Comedian” to his job title….do you agree that he can say all the bigoted, hateful things he wants as long as it’s in a “punch line”???

……to an intelligent adult…..bigoted,misogynistic speech should not be tolerated by anyone……

…it’s you and your liberal friends giving out the “get out of bigoted” free cards to protect your leading liberal voices.

…..and once again in this thread bayam…you fail to address the leading voices of the democratic party that make “long, vicious, hate filled, misogynistic rants against other people…
…so I am going to post it for you one more time:

…and let’s remember bayam…there was a lot more hate directed at Palin and other Conservatives by liberals than just the “comedian” crowd:

This via the dailyKos (supported by elected democrats who post there and attend their conferences)
Sarah Palin Is NOT The Mother

Attention! Read The Follow-Up too! BabyGate: Explosive New Details [Photos+Video]
Y

Well, Sarah, I’m calling you a liar. And not even a good one. Trig Paxson Van Palin is not your son. He is your grandson. The sooner you come forward with this revelation to the public, the better.

(this from the Huffington Post…a leading democratic website that regularly hosts liberals elected to office and in the entertainment industry)

Obama’s Huffington Post: “Palin Will Run in ’12 on More Retardation Platform”
Friday, July 3, 2009 | Kristinn

In Sarah Palin’s resignation announcement she complained about the treatment of her son Trig who always teaches her life lessons. She said that the “world needs more Trigs, not fewer.” That’s a presidential campaign promise we can all get behind. She will be the first politician to actually try to increase the population of retarded people. To me, it’s kinda like saying the world needs more cancer patients because they teach us such personal lessons.
Her first act as President: To introduce a Pre-K lunch buffet that includes lead paint chips. Sort of a Large HEAD-START Program.
She will then encourage women to hold off on pregnancies until their 40′s just to mix up some chromosomes.

…….and the hits just kept coming…without any outrage from liberals at all:

Here is Salon…a leading liberal online magazine:

Great moments in media: Salon’s dominatrix/bestiality photoshop of Palin
posted at 6:00 pm on September 9, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

http://hotair.com/archives/2008/09/09/great-moments-in-media-salons-dominatrixbestiality-photoshop-of-palin/

For readers who want a one-stop, full-service descent into Palinphobia, Salon Magazine apparently has decided to address that market. Juan Cole compares Sarah Palin to Muslim terrorists for the audacity to be Christian — and that’s the rational argument coming from Salon’s pages today, comparatively speaking. Gary Kamiya provides the Chock Full o’ Nuts essay of the day, with a lovely photoshop showing the Governor of Alaska as a sexual deviant coming on to a moose.

….bayam…all of these are leading voices and outlets for the democratic party. Not “comedians”…..but leading voices and outlets for the democratic party…supported by elected democrats and made successful by being supported by it’s liberal base….
…………and not one word of outrage coming from you hypocrites that are getting your panties all bunched up because Rush called the Ivy League liberal who somehow can’t afford contraception a “slut”….

..it doesn’t speak highly of liberals now does it.

Baxter Greene on March 24, 2012 at 10:23 PM

arnold ziffel on March 25, 2012 at 12:15 AM

It’s because he was calling out the media for pumping up an average QB as one of the best strictly because of his color. And Rush was right. McNabb is nothing special. His career has proven Rush right. But they were exposed by him for their “suck up” mentality, and they went after him. Idiots. Punks. ESPCN.

I watch some games on that channel but avoid all of their talk shows. Don’t even watch Sports Center. The last straw for me was really when Bob Ley (sp?) went into full mentally-neutered male mode over the flap with that hag that was throwing a fit about female membership at Augusta. Martha something. Screw her. Screw Bob Ley and the cajones he no longer has, and screw ESPCN.

Not just the loose morals (they were bringing some girls back to the house from a bar and the imagery left very little to the imagination, the production quality is about what you would expect from something shot by a group of grade school children for a school project. Part of the group went camping, the imagery shot from that looked like what any Joe or Jane camper would have shot with their handheld video or cell phone camera.

..in bayam land…serious Conservative “leaders” like Rush should be held accountable…

……but serious liberal “leaders” like Daily Kos…Huffington Post…NYTimes….MSNBC…and Salon….

Which is why credibility is not a strong point in the democratic party where hypocrisy reigns.

But this should make bayam happy….
More liberals defending not just bigotry and hatred….but wishing “gang rape” on a woman:

(Sandra calls on black men to gang rape Sarah Palin)
Read more: http://digitaljournal.com/article/260071#ixzz1q6GyNhN1

Even worse, many media outlets, including the Washington Post, have been fawning all over her rage-filled ranting.

Here’s an example of it from the Blog of Theater J, via NewsBusters:

In fact, the play wears its politically VERY correct heart on its sleeve with its indictment of America as “A Man’s World, It’s a White Man’s World, It’s a F–ked Up White Man’s Racist World” and can only be suggested to be racist in its content if one is hell-bent on protecting White Folk for Sandra’s blistering indictment. When Sandra warns Sarah Palin not to come into Manhattan lest she get gang-raped by some of Sandra’s big black brothers, she’s being provocative, combative, humorous, and yes, let’s allow, disgusting.
The fact that the show has a few riffs like this does not — to my mind — make it a “disgusting show.” there’s too much beauty, variety, vitality, and intelligence to label the entire show as “disgusting.” I’ll agree with you that we produced this show because we did find it to be edgy — because we wanted to give right wing conservative Jews a good run for their money by being on the receiving end of some blistering indictments from Sandra.Does it go over the edge sometimes? On the gang-rape joke, yes. Sure. Not much else. It goes over the edge and then comes right back to the cutting edge. [Profanity editing is mine.]

The Washington Examiner’s Barbara Mackay calls Bernhard’s rant “enraged optimism” and the gang-rape joke “oddly but subtly positive.”

The Washington Post’s Tim Graham called the gang-rape comment “part of a much larger, nuanced piece” and the show itself “a rotating sprinkler that a spectator washes in most happily.”

Mr. Graham seemingly neglected to mention that the sprinkler spray the Bernhard spectator washes in most happily is urine.
On that note, here are some more ‘optimistically enraged’ quotes from Bernhard’s show:
“Whore.”
“Turncoat B*tch.”
“Uncle Woman,” which is apparently a reference to Uncle Tom.

……but don’t you dare say “slut”….
Ohhhhhhhhh…
……….Myyyyyyyyyyyy
…………….Godddddddddddddddd….
That’s crossing the line in liberal land.

What a bunch of pathetic hypocrites…

arnold ziffel on March 25, 2012 at 12:44 AM

I turn on the tube and what do I see
A whole lotta people cryin’ “Don’t blame me”
They point their crooked little fingers at everybody else
Spend all their time feelin’ sorry for themselves
Victim of this, victim of that
Your momma’s too thin; your daddy’s too fat

Get over it
Get over it
All this whinin’ and cryin’ and pitchin’ a fit
Get over it, get over it

You say you haven’t been the same since you had your little crash
But you might feel better if they gave you some cash
The more I think about it, Old Billy was right
Let’s kill all the lawyers, kill ‘em tonight
You don’t want to work; you want to live like a king
But the big, bad world doesn’t owe you a thing

Get over it
Get over it
If you don’t want to play, then you might as well split
Get over it, get over it

It’s like going to confession every time I hear you speak
You’re makin’ the most of your losin’ streak
Some call it sick, but I call it weak

You drag it around like a ball and chain
You wallow in the guilt; you wallow in the pain
You wave it like a flag, you wear it like a crown
Got your mind in the gutter, bringin’ everybody down
Complain about the present and blame it on the past
I’d like to find your inner child and kick its little ***

Get over it
Get over it
All this *****in’ and moanin’ and pitchin’ a fit
Get over it, get over it

Get over it
Get over it
It’s gotta stop sometime, so why don’t you quit
Get over it, get over it

Get over it

And if Rush had made the same remarks against gays, conservatives would have demanded he run for President. What a crock ..to fabricate a hypothetical situation, invent a non-existent outcome and then present it as a meaningful argument. In reality, Richards, a comedian, was held accountable by liberals for his unscripted, hateful diatribe against a minority group.

bayam on March 25, 2012 at 12:15 AM

It was unscripted because he was being heckled.

I larf at the idea of liberals going out on a limb and taking a principled stand against… washed up Seinfeld alum Kramer.

SparkPlug on March 25, 2012 at 12:53 AM

I didn’t know this conversation had evolved into a comparison of inappropriate commentary made about right-leaning politicians and public figure vs. left-leaning public figures. In the history of American politics, I didn’t know that one side was more victimized by the other.

bayam on March 25, 2012 at 12:40 AM

With a such a pathetic dodge as that…
….you should have just stopped at “I didn’t know.”

bayam…you have zero credibility.

You,your liberal friends, and the democratic party regularly engage in bigoted, hateful, misogynistic rhetoric.

liberals promote and defend it on a regular basis if it helps them push their agenda.

To give liberal leaders a total pass for their bigotry and then try to feign outrage at Rush is just another example of the pathetic hypocrisy and lack of credibility that liberals like you and the democratic party engage in on a regular basis.

bayam…no credibility what-so-ever.

Gary Kamiya provides the Chock Full o’ Nuts essay of the day, with a lovely photoshop showing the Governor of Alaska as a sexual deviant coming on to a moose.

..it doesn’t speak highly of liberals now does it.
