Cybersecurity battle heads to Congress
posted at 9:00 am on March 24, 2012 by Jazz Shaw
There’s no getting around it… hackers are doing a lot more than just loading trojans into your important e-mails from Nigerian princes trying to send you money. Some of the most prominent “hacktivists” making news are from the group Anonymous, and they’ve been getting up to all sorts of mischief. Whether it’s targeting the government of Greece or going after the Pope, the threat of serious damage from this new breed of criminals is very real and a lot of industry resources are being put into trying to block them. But fear not! We’ve got just the solution which is bound to fix everything. (By which I mean, “fix nothing.”)
I’m From The Government And I’m Here To Help.
A bipartisan Senate bill to bolster cybersecurity has sparked a competing proposal from Republicans wary of new regulations for businesses, a signal that burgeoning anti-government fervor has begun shaping national-security measures.
The White House-backed proposal would require companies that own computer networks integral to key critical infrastructure like electric-power systems and nuclear reactors to meet certain cybersecurity standards. Sponsors include the chairman and ranking member of the Homeland Security panel, Sens. Joseph Lieberman (I., Conn.) and Susan Collins (R., Maine).
[...]
Much of the debate so far has focused on whether proposed new regulations would be too onerous and costly for the private sector. Business interests have played a key role in crafting both proposals.
The bipartisan bill would create a new regulatory regime. The Homeland Security Department would work with industry to determine which computer systems within companies were running infrastructure where a cyberattack would be catastrophic.
The Lieberman Collins bill takes a page from a very old and very bad book. They identify a real problem and then respond with a knee jerk reaction which dumps the entire mess on a federal agency and begins piling on regulations for private companies. Perhaps it’s time to take a different approach. Washington needs to be responsible for government computer systems, and they might need a bit more help from the private sector than they are currently allowing. Private companies are responsible for their own security needs and have to take the precautions they feel appropriate to protect themselves.
Yes, if they need help taking down the bad guys, call in Justice and just make sure they follow all constitutional protections when going after Americans. But the current plan looks like it will take private security into a realm of check box bureaucracy which will be out of date before the regulations are published. And that doesn’t even get into the question of how much this turns into an invitation for Uncle Sam to go browsing through everyone’s computer files.
The Republicans, led by John McCain, have an alternate proposal, but I’d need to see more details before I could endorse that either. It’s known as The Strengthening and Enhancing Cybersecurity by Using Research, Education, Information and Technology Act (SECURE IT), S 2151, and it seems to have the initial benefit of not turning the entire mess over to DHS. That’s a start, at least. Give it a read and see what you think.

Most of Seal Team 6 Gone. Dead American Ambassador and staff left for dead like a sacrificial pawn in some sick twisted political strategy.
It may be unprecedented historical levels of perversions the Executive Branch has reached during these last few years. It’s gang of IRS, State Department, Department of Justice, and Main Stream Media thugs are executing a full on assault against the founding principles of the United States and it’s Constitution in attempt to covert Free People into Far Western Europeans. Once DHS as full control of all police and law enforcement agencies as well as the domestic military forces then game over.

the two are very connected. Obama outed the Gen just like he used the IRS to attack his politcal enemies. Once Petraeus’s honor was destroyed and life ruined Obama was “safe” from attacks from the CIA’s top man and was able to install someone he trusted 100%.
If not for terror attack on our embassy Petraeus would be CIA head to this day.

Until the newest revelation, I doubt reporters wanted to go back to this Petraeus affair. I think we have to start talking about that timeline. I realize that Petraeus would testify with a ton of baggage, but he needs to explain his Pontius Pilate routine, and he needs to explain how his subordinate–rather than he–ended up signing off on the talking points.

McCain wants a ‘select committee’ to look into this? Why, so he can help build cover for Hillary and others who really need to be looked at very deeply?
McCain needs to go on a fact-finding junket to Syria, far as I’m concerned.
I say to get all the whistleblowers, who are low- to medium level but enough in-the-know, to state their evidence and testimony first. That way, a case can be built strong enough so higher-ups have no wiggle room at all. Force Hillary to lie against corroborated testimony, so there’s no way she can come out of the investigations smelling like a rose.

You’re Boring.
And remember, the 2002 Iraq Authorization, which our current and former (Democrat) Secretaries of State signed off on as Senators, was based on WMD claims from the previous (Democrat) Administration. Mrs. Clinton told us so when she voted to authorize the Iraq War; she said she got her intel on the WMDs from her husband’s intel people, not Bush’s.
Likewise, that 2002 Iraq Authorization also listed 11 other non-WMDs reasons for authorizing the use of force; many of those 11 other reasons also came from the previous (Democrat) Administration.
Remember, it was (Democrat) Bill Clinton’s Administration that first claimed Iraq had WMDs (in 1998) and that very same year his Justice Department’s Federal Indictment of bin Laden specifically stated that al Qaeda did have a working relationship with Iraq.
So using your “logic”, former (Democrat) pResident Bill Clinton, his wife, and our current “Secretary of State” should also be sitting in prison for their lies. I’m sure you will agree.

sandee on May 12, 2013 at 11:58 AM
I think that’s right. When lawyers take depositions in civil suits, they like to try and depose fact witnesses first, and then the parties to the lawsuit. Usually no depositions happen until they have reviewed the documents in the case first. The strategy is intentional: get the facts out first, then depose the parties at the end and see how well they can “spin” the bad facts. They don’t really depose the parties to get the “facts,” nor should Issa depose Hillary to get facts..

Jay Carney’s crime:
He is a serial semantic contortionist.
It is a violation of the public trust to carefully craft every word of every “official statement” so as to avoid White House responsibility for any virtually action of the Executive Branch and, purposefully, to hide the truth from the American public. His crime should be placed in the federal criminal code and he should be locked up for it. As a former reporter, he should lock himself up as a simple matter of honor. Let’s not hold out breath on that one.
Meanwhile, it is a sad day (and a frightening day) when you can’t believe a word the Presidential spokesman says.
